Report: Dragic Not Likely to Re-Sign With Rockets

Based on his play in the absence of Houston’s starting point guard Kyle Lowry for a good portion of the 2011-12 season, Goran Dragic has set himself up for a starting PG gig in the League. But while most thought it would come with the Rockets, there is now a report suggesting Dragic and Houston are far apart on contract negotiations. So far apart, in fact, that it looks like Dragic won’t be back in a Rockets uniform. According to ESPN.com‘s Marc Stein: “The Houston Rockets are pessimistic about their chances of re-signing point guard Goran Dragic with the sides far apart in negotiations, according to sources close to the process. The Rockets met with Dragic on Monday in Houston and were hopeful of reaching terms quickly with the Slovenian, who averaged 16.3 points and 7.3 assists in 32 games after the All-Star break following an injury to Kyle Lowry. But Dragic left town without a deal, sources said, leading one source close to the process to say that the lefty’s expected return to the Rockets is “not going to happen.” Dragic is scheduled Tuesday to visit the Phoenix Suns, who dealt him to the Rockets at the 2011 trade deadline. Dragic is said to be seeking an annual salary of at least $10 million and, according to sources familiar with his thinking, expects to be installed as the starter wherever he lands.”

Why would Houston want both Dragic and Lowry on the roster anyway? Both players want and deserve to be starting PG.

  • LS

Lowry doesn’t want to play for the Rockets anymore, apparently mainly b/c of McHale. We Rockets fans just can’t get a break these days. *sigh*

can’t say I blame him for doing what’s best for his career. He definitely deserves it. I really do hope they can keep him–he’s an All-Star waiting to happen.
That being said, maybe it’s time for Daryl Morey and Kevin McHale to k!ss Kyle Lowry’s @ss? You know, just for safety? He’s on contract anyways, but it couldn’t hurt.

I think if Dragic leaves, Lowry will be okay. He was just pissed about having to come off the bench (rightfully so).

  • Basketball iQ

yeah youre pissed but you got an infection from wherever and a sports hernia which needed surgery… they needed a backup and dragic did his thing… 3-4yrs 8-9mil shouldnt be bad and a promise hes the starter, hes a rocket. if yall let him get away, its over next year for them. They were up & down just like lowry’s game before dragic came on.

  • Groves

“seeking an annual salary of $10 million” really? i can’t see that happening anywhere

  • Jer dawg

He’s damn good, but definitely NOT $10 good. Mike Conley is getting about $7 million or so. But get what you are worth. Laugh in the faCe of cynics who knock you for your cash.

This is the reason , Y h-towns fans are tired of not the team but rockets organization, NO direction.I keep hearing people say they had a good draft..stop!! it was a dud, all they did was add 3 type of talents u already have. The lamb pick is solid because he kevin martin jr but has the ability to play some defense. Royce or t .jones (which i like both games is not what they needed) they could;ve package lowery and martin for the 8th pick to t-dot and got drummond who they really wanted or took a swing with Pj3 or if not with the 18th pick got teague or wroten. Knowing lowery wants to go and also use basic comprehenson to tell u dragic would want to get paid….So now u have no back up pg and a disgruntle strating pg wow…

I think if the Raptors whiff on Nash, this could be an option. If they would give Nash 36 million, I’d assume they would give Dragic 40 over 4. I’ll also throw out the generic international point of view that would apply to both sides. They have the cap space…

  • L Dribble

To those saying that he won’t get $10m – remember that until last week Joe Johnson had an ‘untradeable’ contract and that 38 year old Steve Nash just got offered £36 mill for 3 years.

  • http://www.macknificentcasey.com/ Macknificent31

$10m is a crazy price for Dragic, but some team will roll the dice. I like what Anti Rob said about Toronto. If they don’t get Nash, what do they have to lose? It can’t get any worse

  • Mr. Goattree

Comparing $12 mill per year to Nash vs $10 mill per year to Dragic is laughable if you are Toronto.

I guarantee that Toronto will make that money back and more, instantly, in jersey sales, seasons tickets, promotions, etc, all based around the two-time Canadian MVP coming back to Canada. He will have an entire nation cheering for him, and finally installing some national pride in the Dinos in this damned hockey-crazed country.

I can’t really see an unproven Slovenian kid having a similar impact, sorry. I hate when guys have (half) a great season in contract years and expect to get paid. Anybody else remember Jerome James (in Seattle) and Erick Dampier (in GS) averaging double-doubles, getting paid, then getting fat, lazy and useless?

Don’t get me wrong, I like Dragic’s game and would love to see him in T Dot if we strike out on Nashty, but not for more than 6 or 7 mill per year.

  • bdogg

hopefully lakers can get aaron brooks. always liked him!

  • Mr. Goattree

Nash could be mayor of Toronto, if he wants, if he finishes his career in a Raptors uni.

  • JL

It’ll be tough to find a team able to pay that amount, but he’s good. It’s not like he’s asking for 12 mil or more. The only thing is Houston already has another PG and he makes 5.75 mil. I am not sure if Dragic is better than Lowry, or by that much. No way Houston keeps him. I think the best option is probably a sign a trade. Maybe still do a trade with the Lakers for Gasol and throw in either Dragic or Lowry and also Kevin Martin and Patrick Patterson or some other young big.

  • jose

Dragic could always head back to PHX . . .

  • Anti Rob

I love when people act like 10 million a year is so much different than 7 mill. The point is that the Raptors need a point guard that can be the guy for the near future. Calderon is a great backup, but the Raps won’t manage with him playing 35 minutes a game. Calderon makes what, 8? And you’re saying you won’t give Dragic 9?

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

lol @ L dribble, nash gets paid in pounds?

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

I would love for my Lakers to pick him up to provide playmaking.

  • RunNGun

To the Knicks… make it happen, Dolan!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Assuming Houston trades Kyle Lowry, what I want to know is who the hell else are they gonna spend money on if not Goran Dragic, who happens to be their best player (other than Kyle Lowry)?? They gave up Aaron Brooks, they’re ready to give up Kyle Lowry, and now they’re not even willing to keep Goran Dragic?
They better keep one of those guys and kiss whoever’s @ss remains.
