New York Knicks Reportedly Let Jeremy Lin Walk

According to The New York Times’ Howard Beck, the Knicks have decided not to match the Rockets offer sheet for Jeremy Lin. The contract is believed to include a “poison-pill” third year which would pay the 23-year-old point guard nearly $15 million, which would push New York far into the luxury tax. After acquiring Raymond Felton in a sign-and-trade with the Blazers, the Knicks are prepared to move forward with a point guard duo featuring Felton, who played in 54 games with the team in the ’10-11 season, and veteran Jason Kidd. Lin averaged roughly 15 and 6 for New York in a breakout ’11-12 season.

Per the NYT:

The Knicks are not expected to announce their decision until this evening, and there is still a chance — albeit incredibly small — that it could be reversed. But as of 4 p.m. the decision had been made and was considered final by those with knowledge of the deliberations. Indeed, the deliberations were said to be over. The Knicks have first-refusal rights on Lin and by rule have until Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time to either match the offer or let him walk. The decision was ultimately financial, not emotional. The contract with Houston includes a third-year balloon payment of $14.9 million, which would have cost the Knicks another $35 million or more in luxury-tax penalties had they matched the deal. The so-called poison pill was designed to dissuade the Knicks.

The Knicks wanted to keep Lin, but his situation was complicated. Because he was a restricted free agent, the Knicks had the right to match any offer. Yet under N.B.A. cap rules, they could offer him no more than $16.13 million in a three-year deal, and a maximum of $28.75 million over five years. Only a rival team was allowed to include the third-year balloon payment. So it was up to Lin to set his own market value, by getting an outside offer. He initially agreed with Houston on a three-year, $19.5 million deal, including a $9.3 million balloon payment in the third year. That deal was agreed to in principle but never signed. When it became apparent that the Knicks would match, the Rockets increased the third-year salary to $14.9 million, close to the maximum allowed. The Knicks are already expected to be over the luxury-tax threshold, so Lin’s salary would have cost them tens of millions more under the league’s more punitive new system. In recent days, two people briefed on the Knicks’ deliberations said it was unlikely the team would keep Lin. Yet both cautioned that the decision was not final and would ultimately be made by one person: James L. Dolan, the Madison Square Garden chairman.

We’re literally talking about a team that has a notorious history for signing inept contracts and finally they are passing on one that could be potentially the most profitable contracts in team history. Lin will be an average PG at worst, one asian tv deal makes up the extra $35M, jersey sales could also bring in a large chunk of that and like I said, worst case you flip one of your expiring contracts after two years whether that be Lin, Amare, or Chandler. And yes…. they can easily trade one of those peices if this doesn’t work out, expiring contracts have high value in this league

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk

Teddy, doesn’t that make this suck though? Take your Lin appreciation out of it for just a second. You just paid, an inferior PG what you could have paid the other two. Basically, Morey just picked Lin over Lowry and Dragic….that is a good thing?

  • LA Huey

Remember when the Knicks picked up Chauncey final year and then amnestied him just before training camp the following season? Now is this situation less/just as/more amusing?

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@Teddy, Jeremy Lin and Jeremy Lamb… didn’t even catch that.. niiice.

    Cubicle Worker,

With that contract, if Lin doesn’t work out the Rockets fan will eat him alive and the GM will be fired. The so-called “synergies” I mentioned earlier could have been shared by both Lin and NYK. He could have taken more than warranted based on his limited body of work, yet less than what Houston offered. Secondly, other athletes have provided global marketing dollars away from the playing field, yet the public hasn’t been so rabid about it. The Williams Sisters have brought additional fans to tennis, yet the public never lobbied for them to receive more prize money. Grand Slam events take on a heightened level of importance, and global interest, when they play well. Yet if someone suggested they receive more prize money all H-E-L-L would break loose.

They definitely down graded at the PG spot

    Fair assessment.
I always understood Fishers worth defensively. He would get blown by with the quick lil guys, but you give him someone that doesn’t have blinding speed and he’ll out-strength and out smart them.
Nash, as you said has… well… always sucked defensively.
The one thing he has going for him is the ability to take the charge. (unless Kobe gets in his ear and tells him how it will end his career before he’s 35… wait…what)
Overall, I do think that Nash is a huge upgrade for the Lakers over Fisher and Sessions. Hopefully Steve Blake finds some inner Portland or something in him so that he can deliver decently off the bench.(He actually was solid last season)
It is going to have to be a team effort to make them an upper echelon team. Luckily Nash is known for being able to bring a team together and his positive attitude also appears to be the perfect sugar coating for Kobe’s a$$hole-ish-ness(it’s a word, look it up)
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts, because I was curious if you thought it might be a fail because of Nash’s style not matching well.

  • RunNGun

@CubicleWorker Are you Felton kidding me? The Rockets logo was changed to the current one so it resembled more of a Chinese character due to Yao Ming. His marketing opportunities will be just as much or even better than if he would have stayed with the Knicks. Remember, you’ve got 1.5 billion people in China and another 25 million in Taiwan. And it’s not like he’s going to a small market or city… Houston is the fourth largest city in the USA.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Man everyone is projecting how much money Lin will make New York.
No one knows how that will shake out if dude doesn’t do well out the gate.
Lin signed the best possible contract for himself. The Kicks looked at it and said “I don’t think that’s for us.”
Let’s wait and see how it turns out before we condemn the decision as stupid, or laud it as smart.

  • Toner

Can the Knicks match the contract and restructure it? ie. make it $8.5 mil a year for the next 3 years in order to take the sting out of the 3rd year?

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk

    no

  • LA Huey

    ^No.

  • CubicleWorker

    Toner – no.

RunNGun – I don’t don’t doubt that, I mainly made the ref to maybe having more opportunities in new york to humour Ip, frankly it won’t make too much of a difference.

AllenP – That’s fair enough if the knicks don’t decide to match. I think it’s ridiculous that THIS is the contract that they don’t like after signing how many ludicrous deals over the last decade.

After all the lockout talk to which I mainly sided with the owners I’m surprised that now the fans have a problem with JLin making $25M when that contract makes more business sense than Gerald Wallace at $40M, Humphries at $24M (though I see your point about the potential trade numbers working out), Batum at $48M.. Really?? Batum is worth twice as much as Lin??? People on these boards need to chill

  • O

I know Jeremy is tight. He seriously overplayed his hand. He wanted to be a Knick AND get overpaid something serious. Couldn’t have his cake and eat it too, b. He’ll make his marketing money fa sho, but he ain’t going to be on a winning team if Dwight doesn’t make it there. It’ll be the Lin show without a Dwight, Melo or Stat which means he’ll be the only cat getting double-teamed on the reg. I hope he’s up for the challenge…

  • http://allanzuss@gmail.com Mendel

Good Riddence. He was a bum, who had a good run.

  • LA Huey

    I see you, Cubicle.

  • JB

So many SLAM readers don’t know sh!t about basketball.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Time to get Jeremy Lin fitted with a grill and get him a Slab with 84′s on it. Welcome to Houston

  • Jono

EVERYONE! You do know he is only gonna earn $5M next season and the following right? You whine and whine about $15M in his 3rd season and SO MANY players have done worse without hearing peoples complains of this magnitude. I’m looking at you Eddy Curry, Jerome James, Kwame Brown etc.

  • CDaTyrant

@Kevin u forgot about that Styrofoam cup wit purple/pink drank my guy.

  • Buyout

    Yessssss!!!!

He doesn’t need a team full of bullshit fans like NY!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Lin is like a 6’3 version of Yao Ming. Im surprised the Knicks didnt retain his services.

  • jar 81475

Houston cut this guy now you are giving him crazy money. The Knicks did the best thing. Lin won’t last two years in houston he’s not worth that much money.

  • MeloMan15

@slick ric… how is he a 6’3 yao ming? Besides race (which they dont even share in common, seeing as how yao is chinese and lin is taiwanese) what else could you be talking about… they are completely different

  • Mr6ftgreat

Raymond Felton > Jeremy 3 months of deem cent nuttin spectacular Lin…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

@meloman15, that is not me, that is a troll…..for future references, don’t entertain these ridiculous statements this low-life loser is leaving pretending to be me.

  • pposse

Lakeshow, I think your over analyzing your lakers..imo they already are an upper echelon team! That team should easily make it to the wcf! The only competition is thunder, griz and I guess the spurs (but. The spurs might gas out after the 82 game grind) I’m cosigning whomever said that it is NOT lins fault if the knicks have to pay near 40 mill in luxury cap fees..how can a 40 million dollar penalty be assessed to ONE ball player?? Smh that is a logical fallacy…dicto simpliciter to be exact (I think)

  • pposse

Cubicle is it just me or has basically every single contract that has been reported in the last three weeks been absurd?? Who in the eff determines the market value?? I see only one or two teams bidding for these ‘overpaid’ players services and then I’m hearing by slam commenters, analysts and the likes about this and that being the players market value lol. If batum getting 48 mill then kevin love will probably want somewhere near 100 mill wen he a fa, I mean cmon this needs to stop!

  • Slick Ric

@meloman15, but they are both asian

  • Smizz

Knicks made the right move. Although Lin has potential, the deal was based on 35 games that he played. That’s nowhere near enough games to give dude that amount of money. I’m not hatin’, just sayin’ that the deal was based on the marketability of Linsanity.

  • http://slamonline.com Chinese Oppenheimer

84s, red doors, purple cup, screw what’s up…….

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Taiwan is just an island outside of China, so Yao and Lin are the same race.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ nbk, Allenp: I agree completely… They could have just smoothed things over with Kyle Lowry and kept him on his much more reasonable contract. OR, they could have forked over the cash they used on Lin to re-sign Goran Dragic, who also plays at a borderline All-Star level like Lowry. But Daryl Morey has been a complete dumb@ss this off-season, so what can you expect? I don’t think they got better at point guard but they at least got Lin.
That’s all I can say. I was p!ssed they let the other two guys go and I was getting prepared to skip Houston’s games this year. At least this makes things interesting.
Dork Elvis made some good draft choices though.

  • Mike Wang

The Knicks will lose games as well as money in the next 3 years . And they will find this is true when they begin to sell next season tickets .

  • Confused-say!

is it jus me or did the rockets lose nearly everything they had? Scola, Lowry, Dragic, Budinger, Camby and probably someone else and they only player they have is Lin. Correct me if wrong its hard to keep up!

  • Confused-say!

@Mike Wang…I am a big Lin advocate, i think he has great potential to be a good player but i dont think they are going to lose games because of him not being in the lineup. Lin leaving will have little effect on ticket sales also. Its NYC. Lots of Asians in NYC will be pissed also but if theyre only going because of one player who had a breakout season then stiff s**t to them. Go watch houston games on league pass.

  • Confused-say!

@Redd…f**k dude. When i think of you, i think of some normal middle class white guy who isnt a bad guy or anything but does have deep seeded racism issues. You are the epitome of accidental racist. Its ok, you dont have to feel the guilt of your white ancestors. Just evolve.

  • http://Slamonline.com 1982

Mike Wang did you start watching the NBA only after Lin had his break out games?

  • Confused-say!

Also…….i cant believe the Knicks traded Jared Jeffries. You think the Knicks want to build one week and then the next you smack your head.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

It was racist to point out that Taiwan is a republic of china? Say what! I’m a non-white raised in the projects and yes I’m in the middle class. I happen to be Muslim, so this is pretty awkward huh? Yep.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

But I do thank you for saying u don’t think I’m a bad guy..I think? Lol but seriously I just don’t like the Knicks but rest assured I’m no douche, I’m actually studying to join doctors without borders, it’s real out here. But people on Slam really don’t like me, I’m about to change my name to Blu and start anew.

  • LW

Houston will be a young and running team, its just under kevin mcfail lowry and dragic both hated his ass. Tough situation. His time to shine in New york and introduction to the world was just a precursor. Its up to him to put on a show and educate the world that hes not a sensation but a good basketball player. Terrence Jones is a man amongst boys dont underestimate him, parsons, along with dalembert, lamb. not bad very good young talent

  • Thanatos1521

From what I’ve heard the Houston Rockets can spread the value of the Lin’s contract equally over the 3 years. So, Houston takes a cap hit of only 8 million per year.

  • Thanatos1521

    some link regarding Lin’s contract

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

David Lee was one of the better power forwards when he was on the Knicks, left, and became a good player… Point being- ok players on a bad team can sometimes look great… I wish this kid luck though..

  • L Dribble

Point guards off the top of my head that are better than Lin (no order): Rose, Paul, DWill, Westbrook, Curry, Wall, Rondo, Nash, Brooks, Lowry, Lawson, Parker, Jennings, Conley, Collinson, Kemba, Lilliard, Rubio, Billups, Kyrie, Stuckey, Felton…

  • L Dribble

Hope people realise that proceeds of NBA TV rights and jersey sales are equally shared between all 30 teams so Lin makes no difference to the Knicks in this regard.

  • Slapurface

@REDD you dumb idiot. Taiwan isn’t a Republic of China! LOL. It is it’s own country. It split from China during their civil war.

  • JB

Last season was the first time that Lin got some real burn. Like any other player that comes into the NBA, they all need to improve on their game and Lin is no exception. Taking care of the ball and playing D are Lin’s weaknesses. He doesn’t have near the athletic ability that most of the L PGs have, but like Nash, he will have to learn to use his court savvy. Give the young fella some more experience and he is going to be a decent PG.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think people gloss over the information that this was the offer Houston made after the Knicks promised to match the first offer. So Lin got a great offer, the Knicks promised to match, then Lin went back and got an even better offer.
Nothing wrong with that on his part, that’s called negotiating, but the offer he went and got was MUCH WORSE for the Knicks.
Not really sure how people can be so disturbed that hte Knicks weren’t happy about Lin’s double dipping and decided to let him walk and enjoy himself. Seems perfectly reasonable to me, just like it was perfectly reasonable for him to use the Knicks promise to match as a way to get a great deal.
