Report: Ray Allen to Sign With Miami Heat

Ray Allen has joined the Miami Heat, according to multiple reports. After battling injuries during Boston’s Playoff run this past year, Allen—an unrestricted free agent—has decided to join LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the Champion Heat, the team that ended the Celtics’ 2012 season. NBA.com‘s David Aldridge is confirming reports that Allen has agreed to a deal worth what looks like less than what the Cs and Grizzlies were offering: ”The Big Four are no more. At least not in Boston. Free agent guard Ray Allen agreed to sign Friday evening with the Miami Heat, ending his five-year run in Boston that was highlighted by two Finals trips for the Celtics, including the 2008 championship. Allen chose Miami over Boston, Memphis and Minnesota, giving the Heat a potentially lethal perimeter option to go along with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh next season. The 37-year-old Allen visited Miami Thursday and left town Friday morning after being courted by the Heat organization. He was supposed to visit the Clippers on Friday, but that visit was cancelled after Los Angeles agreed to terms with free agent guard Jamal Crawford on Wednesday. Allen never met with the Grizzlies or Timberwolves. The Celtics had been optimistic that they’d be able to re-sign Allen after agreeing to terms last week with Kevin Garnett on a three-year deal and reaching terms on Thursday with forward Brandon Bass. Allen took less money to go to Miami. All the Heat had to offer was the taxpayer’s exception that starts at $3.09 million next season and can go out a maximum of three years and $9.5 million. Boston had offered a two-year, $12 million deal, and the Grizzlies were willing to give Allen their full non-taxpayer mid-level exception that starts at $5 million next season and can go out as long as four years. Heat owner Micky Arison broke the news on his Twitter account Friday, writing, “Its 2:30am in London and I was just woken up with great news. Welcome to the family #20!!””

    Great pickup for Miami.

Bigger role on team + 1 more year than Boston offered + no state income tax

  • iknowmybasketball

i definitely wouldve like to seen this big 3 retire as a big 3. With all the chemistry that celtics team has, i cannot help but think KG PP and Rondo feel betrayed. guess theyll be out for blood when miami rolls along in beantown…

  • BWill22

Ray’s jumpin on the d**k like is going out of style!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Teams are going to have a hard time loading up the paint to slow down LeBron/Wade’s drives now that MIA has Allen along with Battier, Miller (possibly), Chalmers and at times Bosh.

  • O

Allen was good as gone when Ainge was trying to find a good package to trade him for. Not to mention I read that Allen’s relationship with Rondo resembles that of 50 Cent and The Game when they were on G-Unit together (Ok, maybe not that bad, but you get the idea). That said, Heat got the next 3 titles on smash.

heat vs lakers in the finals next year lmao.

yeah, people easily forget that they tried to trade him the last two years.

  • Emphy

    2K13, I got the Heat!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

I’m not too worried about this move actually….ray has lost a step. Like Barkley says: you don’t get healthy when you old, you just die…

  • http://slamonline.com Caboose

Redd is my friend. I bet hed give me a discount on a rimjob

  • alphabeta

Very good signing. Well, Boston Geriatrics, the only person you can blame is that flamer Rondo. If it wasn’t for him maybe you would still have RayRay. Now fade into oblivion. LOL.

  • http://wikipedia.org Eddie1

I’ve been working in the Boston Area for the past 10 years (From Seattle originally so I respect Ray and root for the cat). Since 08, there’s been rumblings of tension between Ray and Rondo, with the former blaming Rondo for his slump during the 08 playoffs. In 2010, this tension resurfaced with Rondo saying that Ray was the reason for the fracture among the locker room with Ray demanding more shot opportunities from Rondo. Didn’t hear anything bad between the two from then on until 2012.

  • O

He could’ve gotten more money elsewhere. This is his big “F*CK YOU” moment to Danny Ainge.

  • Emmanuel

    Okay… That’s it for ray Allen… He’ll now become a true bench warmer…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Yesh this is horrible for the Eastern conference. But that’s not to say that Allen is the same player.

  • http://www.thesmashbrothas.com zen garden

if u cant beat um..join um ..dude still got alot juice left

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

And also assume Allen will be rotated out for Wade so I think we’re overreacting to how affective he will be.

  • money man

that’s how free agency works folks – players heading to the best situation.

  • TV63

Really disappointed to see him go. Miami don’t give a rat about Allen! Job well done Lebron breaking up the BIg 3 and for half the price! You learned from the best! THough Danny Ainge we mostly have you to thank for this . You treated him like disposable garbage during trade time yearly. What did you expect? You sir are a class A jackass!

  • http://wikipedia.org Eddie1

As long as the Thunder don’t win ever I’m good. Eff those thieves. Eddie reppin seattle for life.

  • Bravo

They just got the best 3 point shooter of all time

  • Heals

Much love to RayRay and fam, but now he’s playing for his “boys’” biggest rival, so after the first homecoming cheer and thanks, it’s nothing but boo’s Mr. Shuttlesworth. Hindsight is 20-20, but it was always apparent that PP34, Rajon and Ticket were a little “tighter” with each other individually than they were with SugarRay. The C’s organization had it coming since RayRay was always the go-to piece to dangle in trades (Rondo rumors were always false) over the past couple years so it’s a business on both ends. BUT fam is fam and there was no way in hell anybody even questioned where KG would play if he returned, Doc announced he was coming back within a week; so the whole fact he needed time to think it over between Mia and Bos (taking the meeting with Mia out of respect for LBJ and the Champs aside) at all said enough for me…

  • Robb

hes gonna do great in the regular season….yup. The regular season.

  • Heals

You folks are too funny, yeah blame Rondo fro “tension” or not enough shots when KG, Doc, PP34, Dooling, Bass, Shaq all LOVED to play with/coach. This is the same player who missed 17 straight 3′s in Finals right? Yeah all Rondo’s fault huh? Thought so. Yeah blame Danny for being SMART and looking to trade assets before they lose value. Cause we need to blame Danny for Bass re-uping, Green re-uping (10mil a year now that’s a different story for a different time), snagging Jet (who is more vesatile than RayRay), snagging Sullinger in the draft and establishing a true culture in Beantown…

  • Bernie

Ray Allen sucked last year real bad. None of you guys watched last season? If jones and miller are gone then I don’t think the heat improved really. Thunder up!

  • Your Friendly Neighborhood Dopeman

Thank you for leaving Ray. You was holding down the team. I guess you figured since you can’t guard D Wade for sh*t, you mind as well join him. I applaud you sir. I honestly don’t remember Ray having a good game all season long even before the “bone spurs”. Welp. I was w/ Ainge when he wanted to trade him.

  • Airnest

    JUDAS SHUTTLESWORTH!

  • Think Tank

Really wish he had stayed with the boston crew and upheld their stubborn old warrior mentality. I know that Boston tried to trade him a few times, moved Ray to the bench, and just signed JET… but I just wish he had chose somewhere besides Miami!

  • Joe King

Good thinking on his part in a way if they were trying to trade him the last 2 years… Made sure that he got on a team of his choice instead of chancing retiring somewhere other then a contender

  • anonymous

did people actually watch ray allen last year in boston he was horrific before, during and after the ankle injury. he was killing boston offensively and especially defensively yet ppl think this is a good signing for miami? I`m hoping the optimism is a new form of sarcasm because looked even worse in the playoffs.

  • T-Money

ray averaged 14 ppg as a 4th option and shot 46% from 3. now after the ankle injury, he was trash but he’s not washed up.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I love how Ray is suddenly considered trash by a lot of people now that he’s in MIA, funny how that works.
The Heat don’t need him to be Prime Ray, they need him to knockdown wide-open 3s on a consistent basis and no one in the history of the NBA is better than Ray at doing that. Even with his struggles in the playoffs last year, we saw how teams like MIA were playing him whenever he came off this pin-downs/screens (afraid to give him the slightest daylight).

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

    cosign JT
Ray doesn’t have to be Seattle Ray for him to be a contributor. Good point that people are turning on Ray after this move. Fickled fans are something else. At least my man Heals gives blood some love for what he’s done for Beantown.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

The NBA is going to be so much fun this season

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

co-sign nbk. So many factors to consider & new teams. The balance will definitely switch. I think Sixers got worse.

  • T-Money

jarrett jack’s twitter feed is hilarious. dude is SALTY.

  • Sam

I think it’s fair to say that not only did miami’s perimeter game just improve ten fold, but ray wants to win. He isn’t chasing $.

  • Dr Jamo

    HEAT GOT GAME!!!!

  • http://gmail.com Gangsta

I understand the Heat r the hottest team @ the moment but dat guy made a poor choice bcoz the Celtics r still the team 2 beat with the most titles……

  • http://WWW.SLAMONLINE.COM Benn0

I don’t understand why heat fans automatically believe that they’ll win another championship. Yes ray allen is a brilliant shooter, but he is 37 and becoming more and more injury prone, and he will also be a liability on defense. Secondly, i’d rather have Rajon trying to find me on the court than mario chalmers, or even lebron for that matter. Finally, other teams are still improving – OKC will be back stronger next year, the lakers have added nash, D Rose will be back for the bulls, and even though boston haven’t got ray back, i still think they improved their team in the offseason, and they could still go after someone like lou williams (long shot), OJ Mayo or even elton brand.

  • JML-G

Bulls fans are delusional – without second superstar, its a wrap for that team as contenders in the east

  • http://www.slamonline.com L.E.

A healthy Jeff Green and Jason Terry isn’t that bad. Let Ray go.

  • azhood

Ray Allen just solidified his nba story by chasing coat tails. Its sad really. He wont even be playing in crunch time.

  • EJ

Lebron vs Kobe in the finals, finally?

  • blackthought

man – jesus shook hands with the devil!i justed puked! HATE 2 c him leave, greatest shooter in the game! hope miami doesn`t ever win a ring again!

  • Kas

Just lost all respect for ray allen. I used to love this guy.

  • Ernie D

Writing was on the wall when they got Jason Terry. They needed someone who is willing to come off the bench. They needed to get a little younger, and they needed someone who they wouldn’t have to worry about, injury wise. Ray Allen has had bone spur operations in his ankles TWICE (back in ’07 he had them in both his ankles… Bird was never the same after his heels developed them). The only thing Ray is good at now is spotting up for the wide open three. People hate on the Celtics getting older, and now they make fun of Boston for letting Ray go. Typical. No hatred for Ray. Good luck in Miami… just not too much luck.

  • Bostonballer

First of all, much thanks to Ray for giving us some great years of service, an amazing citizen and a classy professional. I was a fan when he was at UConn, Mil and Seattle..I will always be a fan but I will root against him when they play us. I’m not surprised at the negativity b/c that’s what ppl do and are good at. Comments like Ray’s jump’n on the d**k and Boston Geriatrics and Boston will fade into oblivion and blame Rondo and if you can’t beat um join um and chasing coattails are silly at best. The C’s were one of NBA’s final 4 and a few minutes from being in the finals where anything is POSSIBLE. I wanted Ray to stay but he made a decision to leave whether it was business or personal or both it doesn’t matter. The comments would have been just as salty if he had gone elsewhere so some of you need to get off the us against the world sob story. I wish him well but not too well. lol Boston is not dead.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Classy response from BostonBaller. I thought that it was a bad sign for the Heat when Allen didn’t immediately sign up following Riley’s pitch. I figured that the longer he waited, the harder it would be to leave. Either way, this is huge: the Heat finally have a three-point shooter they can rely on. If Allen’s healthy next year the Heat will be much more consistent.

  • Zack

    Love this.

  • Brahsef

If you honestly feel the Heat aren’t winnin the chip again next year, you’re delusional

  • monkeyball

It’s hard to believe Ray will be effective during the season. The Heat simply expect him to have a handful of impact performances in the 2013 playoffs. For 3M, it was probably worth it. But health is a huge concern.

  • http://Slamonline jamesdurantmkg

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

  • Justin05

Ppl who make off the wall comments and call themselves brahsef are delusional. The heat will struggle with injuries all next season. Book it! They should still do well tho, the east is going to be pathetic next year.

  • Egres

Look the guy wants to win so he went where he got the best chance ( Boston almost traded him to Memphis last year)
Also maybe he took the signing of Terry as sign to head out.

  • eZ

So nash can go to the lakers uncritisized, even after making his own comments about it beforehand, but ray allen, as a FA, can’t go to the heat? After two+ years of beying trade bait, taking paycuts, even being traded for real, and ainge tough-talking about how he wil even trade pierce for the right pieces if they presented themselves, after the celtics endorse bradley and even sign terry before allen made a decision. When Allen has alway proved to be one of the most classy players in the league… Now he joins the Heat and gets called all kinds of names?
The lot of you , critizing him, disgust me…Bunch of fucking hypocrites…Bad losers and dishonest is what you are.
It’s sports, not war. There are no rivalries, there’s only competition.

Oh and Ray on the heat will be a great succes, all he has to do is to hit those open shots, the ones all those heat role players missed all regular season and the first two rounds of the playoffs. Crunch time lineup Wade, Allen, Battier, James, Bosh, yeah baby…

  • jsmallz

Its sad that he left. Still like him as a player just the one team I wish he didnt go to. As far as the terry game it was just insurence come on if the celtics didn’t sign him they would be in the hole right now. The only reason people dislike the heat is all those annoying bandwagon jumpers when lebron joined the team. For the true fans of that fan good for you im happy for you. But all your bandwagoners make it seem like the rest of the NBA just dies because lebron is on a team. They earned the championship they just recieved no doubt. In the east you have miami bulls boston and the nets as contenders that will make it a tigher squeeze than ever in the east. The west thunder will be back again with more experince, la retooled.

  • Riggs

@BostonBaller: I have the same thoughts you do bro. The only thing is its gonna be hard rooting against him now.

  • Lloyd

All these naysayers talking about how Ray is washed up are crazy. Sounds like they just hope that he has a bad year so that the Heat aren’t as crazy as they’re looking to be. I don’t like the Heat either, but c’mon, Ray could be 50 and I’d take him on my team. Dude’s going to knocking down so many 3s this year. He won’t even have to do too much running off screens like he does now because LBJ and DWade will just suck in the D and kick it out to him where he’ll be wide open all day. Bone chips be damned, he’s knocking down that shot consistently. All the best Ray!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Also off topic but basketball-related: Does anyone know the status of Aaron Brooks? Is he being coveted by any teams? You know, Houston could really use him… lol.

  • eZ

Teddy, make that wade, allen, battier, james and bosh….scarier..

  • Bola

I’m a Celtic fan so i will start by saying thank you Ray Allen for the service he did in a Boston Jersey, i wish him best of luck in his new team. And also this goes out to those (HEAT BANDWAGON FANS)who think Heat will win another championship. You are clearly mistaken. Only way heat will win next season is if other teams remain stagnant and do nothing about their situation to improve. If Bulls get a go to scorer to add to their squad to help Rose then I see bulls having a shot provided rose is healthy and steps his game up. OKC will be back with more confidence and should i say more matured (Experience) We all know come play-offs Boston would be there question is will they show age or will they come of age. For Lakers lets see what happens. Trade rumours and all. This season will be good I’m looking to see what the rookies will bring to their various teams.

  • 2k Jordan in the 4th

LeBron will have multiple triple doubles next season.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Lol that’s bold. He’s had multiple triple doubles in every season since 04-05

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

In related news Boston’s “ok” cuz they just gave Jeff Green as much as they are giving Rajon Rondo.

  • Feez_22

… People actually believe the heat aren’t improved with ray allen? think of it this way… remember all of battier’s wide open 3pt shots at the top of the key and the baseline 3 that he was missing the first 2 rounds of the playoffs and the whole season which he was hitting like wildfire in the finals? Think of ray allen as the wild fire. Ray is the best catch and shoot 3 point shooter in the business. dead eye when open… so yall ppl need 2 get real.

  • Feez_22

i mean… ray allen shoots 57% from the corner 3 and 51% from the left top of key 3. When teams collapse on defense, which spots on the floor are usually open? corner 3, top of the key 3 (either left, right or center). ding ding ding… ray allen’s hot spots. get real as i said. how can you double a driving ray or a in the paint lebron with a guy that shoots 50+% from 2 three point hotspots on the perimeter? maybe u can sag off a battier due to him being cold this season or a hobbled mike miller come playoff time but NOT a ray allen even if he is injured. that is the reason the heat played ray allen as if every one of his shots were 2 go in even though he was injured… u gotta respect his pedigree. if you don’t and he gets hot its all over. now add that to lebron wade bosh and wtf do you have? a nightmare closer type of lineup that poses as a mismatch to every team in the NBA thats what you have.

  • Feez_22

btw i meant ” a driving wade” mistype

  • Bostonballer

Thanks Dagger & Philosopher. Riggs, you hit it by saying it’s going to be hard to root against him BUT we’ll manage to do it when it’s time. LOL Ray is in great and will have fresh legs in the 4th b/c he will not be running around 3 and 4 picks to get a contested jumper (man those all net 3′s with a hand in his face were pretty). I must be addicted since I’m relaxing in BAMA with terrible internet service on SLAM. I digress.

  • Donte

This is where avery bradley steps up & shows the world why ray was hot garbage. Tuff defense (ray never played that) & paul & kg already need shots, now jeff green in the fold, get’m outta here. This rivalry just heated up to the max traitor-as dude

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

In another unrelated note, why is it I don’t hear any Spurs (my team) signings?? They also didn’t have any draft picks this year right??

I think people say that Ray is a traitor because for the fact that he wants to be utilized more when he got back from his injury, but he didn’t, and complained (reportedly) about it. So he joined Miami, which will be the same case (he will play behind Wade for sure).

  • Charles

Will be so good next year because of Ray and D Wade and Bosh will be 100 percent

  • money man

ray is a free agent and acted like one. no hard feelings there. miami was the best fit for him – all those drive and kick from wade and lebron and also transition 3s fit like a glove. did u see how mike miller was wide open in game 5 of the finals? i bet pat riley just showed those clips and said to ray – that’s going to be you next season sir.

boston wanted him back to keep him off the other contenders but in reality he’s competing with avery bradley for minutes. and besides, boston fans shouldn’t complain – team will be younger and deeper next year.
