Sources: Kyrie Irving Breaks Hand (UPDATED)

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

Kyrie Irving had his hand set in a cast today, according to sources. The injury, which the same sources say is most likely a broken bone, occurred while the point guard was practicing with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Las Vegas Summer League.

No further information as to the severity of the injury is known at this time.

Irving, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, averaged 18.5 ppg, 5.4 apg and 3.7 rpg in 51 games this past season. While in Las Vegas earlier this month, Irving played on the USA Select Team.

The Cavaliers are set to play their first Summer League game tomorrow, Sunday, July 15, at 8:30 p.m.

UPDATE: According to Jason Lloyd, the injury, a fractured bone in Irving’s right hand, occurred when the point guard smacked his hand into the padding of a wall after committing a turnover during practice. “I’m a little disappointed for a freak accident like that,” Irving told Lloyd. “I have to be more responsible about my health. It was crazy. It happened so fast. That thing I did, hitting the padding on the wall, I’ve done it so many times. This time it was just a freak accident.”

Irving is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. He should be ready for the start of training camp.

  • Tyquez foster

Damn kyrie first Blake now him….

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

I blame the lockout. Wonder what’s going to happen with Lin now.

  • http://Slamonline.com 1982

Almost positive Houston takes him and all his haters will narrow the sights to see if he can carry a team. The answer is no. Too bad, all he had to do was take less money..

  • just saying

Sounds like a boxer’s fracture. Will hurt development of chemistry being out 6 weeks but should have no lasting impact even with it being on shooting hand. Still, the kid needs to drink more milk!

  • IndyB

Nah, he should always take the most money possible. Let the haters hate. He’ll still get the last laugh because he’s going to be a decent pg who is richer than his haters. Sweet deal.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

He won’t get as much playing time. Felton, Kidd, Lin. Only Lin is a TO machine.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Indy grow up please lol. “haters”? Man people have opinions not hate, his state show he turns it over way too much.

  • IndyB

Yes, moron. His haters. When the only thing you can do is point out a guy’s flaws you are a hater. You’re probably one of them since you took offense to the term haters, especially since no one claimed he was a superstar or perfect player. Who asked you about his stats or turnovers, Captain Obvious?

  • bdogg

this had nothing to do with usa training camp…kyrie punched a padded wall in summer league! did anyone learn the amare lesson?? this is kyrie’s fault..get well and pay up son…you owe kb some dough1

  • IndyB

He punched a Wall? I always figured he was smarter than that, padded or not.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Hey moron his stats show he’s not a good pg thus shouldn’t play much. And um no a hater is someone who would say Lin should get injured. In basketball u point out a players cons if u think he sucks, stop listening to hip hop and grow a pair, quit following the masses dumba**.

  • IndyB

WTF are you talking about? Redd, you don’t even make sense. Your comments are all over the place and generally stupid. Quit listening to hip hop and grow a pair? You can’t even properly insult. WTF does hip hop have to do with me be cowardly (grow a pair????). What does any of that have to do with basketball? And he played well despite turning the ball over so stfu and sit down, clown. He has two NBA teams willing to pay him millions because he’s offensively talented. And he signed the Rockets offer sheet while the Knicks are pursuing Felton, so wtf does Kidd and Felton have to do with his playing time? He won’t be in NY.

  • PnoyVibe

Lin makes up for the TOs with steals

  • jv

man all y’all are dumb…you never hit the padded wall after a bad play? anyway I think kyrie should play kobe as uncle drew-after he heals of course

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

kyrie irving so brittle smh… all good duke players are. luol deng, carlos boozer, grant hill. If you go to duke and you’re decent you will have injuries your entire career. for no reason.

  • Heals

@jv, Thank you! Who hasn’t done this (open hand and closed fist) on a padded basket. Hard or soft, after a good or bad play; anyway glad to see he should be ready to roll for the season…

  • http://Slamonline.com Jzakoni

Some of y’all have never played ball at a very competitive level and it shows in your comments. It’s easy to hit the padded wall after you’ve made a bad play it’s a sign of frustration. It doesn’t make you any less of a person or player just a freak accident.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    ^that was me

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

..grow a pair and quit following everyone else with that dumb misconceptionalized idea of “haters”? You really aren’t all that bright I see. What does having 2 PGs that are better have to do with PT..? LOL wow

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

It says that he smacked it, punching it even is pretty safe. Crazy accident, a la Derrick Rose and a apple peeler.

LIN MAKES UP FOR EVERYTHING by the fact that he will be voted into the allstar team just like Yao and he’ll bring $$$$$ into the Houston organisation.

  • jumpman

Lin is awesome, but wait, what does he have to do with this article?

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Big fan of Kyrie, but why do I get the impression he is injury-prone? Secondly, do you realize how hard you have to hit a padded wall in order to break your hand? Amare-esque?

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

^imagine the diffence in rationality between hitting a soft and a hard surface in frustration.

  • http://9gag.com/gag/4568611 Max

    So Kyrie hit Wall?

    :-)
Finally max with a little fun comment in this testosteron filled blog.
    Dudes relax!!!
    S#&* happens.

  • Clydesays

With Cleveland’s luck, he’ll probably trip over his laces and break something else before the season starts….

  • D12FSU

    G-d hates Cleveland

  • Confused-say!

someone bring up LIN?…Lin can play. Lin played really well in about 20 of his 35 games for the knicks and had 3.5 TO per game. There were games where he had a lot of turnovers but in some of those games he played his best in other aspects. I know this forum is just a bunch of dudes who think they know what they are talking about but you guys are so premature with your opinions. You are all trying to play basketball Nostradamus (which is fine), if you know what you are talking about but you say ish like “Oh and can he cut his TO’s to below 5 a game lol…”, you dont think those high turnover games had anything to do with playing nearly 40 mins with the ball in your hand on a team with questionable chemistry in terms of players and especially coach. Why dont you talk about his effort for those games and his attitude? Instead of bringing up something like his turnovers per game which can be undermined so easily if you look at the situation the Knicks were in at the time. Sorry to get so serious on ya’ll but I just wish people had a better attitude about players who have the potential to play great basketball.

  • http://slamonline.com Chinese Oppenheimer

We all know kobe smacked a phone out of kyries hand.

  • lud

in response to showtime: I am sick of these superstars whining about not being paid to play in the Olympics. There are millions of hoops fanatics who will take your spot for free! They can take the summer off. No one has a gun to their heads.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

    Anything to keep 50k

  • greg

its a roll of the dice, but i think if the knicks are really committed to being a good basketball team, they have to match the offer. with their financial situation, if they dont match lin’s offer sheet, there is no way they can acquire a guard as good as lin with the mini mid level. Lins numbers were inflated because there was no scouting report on him, but his turnovers were high due to his usage, inexperience, and unfamiliarity with his teammates and coach. I expect good things from lin, not an all star, but good things.

  • Jer dawG

That’s unfortunate that he broke his hand. People who hoop has always smacked something whenever they are upset. He gotta drink some more milk to get more calcium in those bones of his. Withstand those smacks against padded walls.

  • IndyB

Dummy, all three won’t be playing for the Knicks. Why are you even commenting? You do realize that if Felton signs off on the sign and trade Lin is going to be a Rocket? Just stop. You’re slow. And you sound r#tarded with the hater comment. My opinion is my own, and since you dnt know ish about me don’t make an assumption the center piece of your argument, ja@ckass.

  • slamfan4life

Thats what you get for challenging Kobe!

jk, hope you get better soon Kyrie!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Lol idiots will be idiots. Lin had multiples 25-30 minute games with 6+ turnovers, you really over exaggerated that he played 40 a game.

  • ReyzRocketz

Welcome back to HOUSTON Lin !!!!!!!

  • ReyzRocketz

    Kyrie got
    be more careful

  • IndyB

You’re an idiot if you ignore turnovers per game for that stretch while talking about minutes per game for the same stretch. See, that’s why no one takes you serious. Nobody said his turnovers weren’t high but he isn’t the only one who averaged around 3.5 while playing that many minutes per. That’s the type of intentional inconsistency that makes everyone dismissive of your opinion.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

He did play a substantial amount of minutes but that’s no excuse for sloppy ballhandling and high turnovers. When you have stretches where you’ve had 6-8 turnovers that’s unexceptable for a starting PG.

  • IndyB

Nevermind the fact that pgs like Rose (35 mpg: 3.1 to per game) Rondo (36 mpg 3.6 to’s) Westbrook (35 mpg 3.6 to’s) played a few mins more with similar to’s but have been starting for a minimum of four years longer than Lin. Experience doesn’t count now? Tell us Nostradamus, you know for a fact that with two more years of starting experience he can’t get his to’s down? Those guys were perfect when it came to not turning the ball over after starting a handful of games?

  • IndyB

That was for Redd^^. And no one is saying Lin doesn’t need massive improvement. All we are saying is that he isn’t trash.

  • Donte

Lin played well enough for a team (houston) to overpay him bc they’re desperate for a pg. his performance earned him the money, overpaid or not, and anybody who says he doesn’t, is a hater ESPECIALLY if you can’t play a freaking lick yourself. Note the key word is EARNED DDDDD!

  • Donte

Lin was new to those type of minutes versus this level of comp. They’d a very good excuse to me. Fresh off your brothers couch & into the fire.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Are u kidding me? You’re comparing Lin to them? They’re elites, Lin isn’t. But if u must know Rose only played 4 more games this season and had less turnovers whilst still handling the ball more than Lin.
