Toronto Raptors Close to Signing John Lucas III

John Lucas III could soon be heading up north to play for the Raptors, further signaling that Jose Calderon’s days in Toronto are nearly over. Per ESPN: “Sources said the sides are in advanced discussions to finalize the terms on a multiyear deal to add Lucas to a backcourt rotation that had already been strengthened earlier this month by the Raptors’ acquisition of Kyle Lowry. One source said Wednesday the Chicago Bulls, who’ve employed Lucas for much of the past two seasons, were resigned to losing the 29-year-old. With the Raptors and representatives for point guard Jose Calderon working together on trying to find a new home for Calderon via trade, Lucas has been targeted by the Raptors to potentially serve as Lowry’s primary backup when Calderon — who wants a fresh start — moves on.”

So this is how teams try to take down the Bulls, sign everyone in their bench mob. (CJ Watson, Asik, Korver, John Lucas III…)

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

    Bulls won’t make the playoff.

  • rubs93

A rebuilt bench mob for the bulls
    JLIII-Teauge
    Brewer-Butler
    CJ-Hinrich
    Korver-Vlad
    Asik-Darko?
We still have the most important piece
    Taj

    Still a 50 win team

  • LA Huey

Bulls will most likely make the playoffs in the East. Their style of play can net you up to 10 wins more than the sum of your parts.

  • R32

Raptors need a real PG not a super-undersized shooting guard. Calderon has more assists in one game than Lucas has in his whole career.

Raptors are making some really good moves this year.
    1. Lowry/Lucas
    2. DeRozan/Ross
    3. Fields/Kleiza
    4. Bargnani/Davis
    5. Valanciunas/Johnson
That’s not bad at all. They still need to get Bargnani the eff out of dodge–too bad Colangelo has a severe man crush on his paisan.

^ finally someone who agrees with me!! him and calderon must go, its like they are a virus to the raptor organization lol

  • Da-Meat-Hook

BC re-signing Bargs and Calderon was stupid. Offering each of them 50 Million was just retarded!

  • MUBWAR

Calderon is on his way out, that’s y we got these new pg’s. i think Bargnani will work well with Valanciunas. 1 of them likes to shoot 3′s the other rebounds and bangs down low. this might be the season we step forward towards bringing the Larry O’brian trophy to canada baby(in the near future)

  • pposse

and another one bites the dust! do the bulls even have a full roster at this point??

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

R32, Kyle Lowry is not a real PG?

  • R32

niQ – Was talking about the backup PG position. Id rather see Calderon backup Lowry than have Lucas try too way hard to get a shot for himself

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@R32, unless a deal is in place for Jose, Lucas would be the 3rd string point guard. BC has already stated that he won’t amnesty Calderon. Plus, his expiring contract will be a good trade bait when the trade deadline comes.

Way to go Raptors. Yeah. Now lets all raise our glasses and drink to ‘The perpetual pursuit of mediocrity.’

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Lucas is no joke, don’t let his size fool you the guy plays super hard and he’s a great guy. Raptors suck but he’s good.

  • Stephen Waugh

The Calderon extension made sense at the time because Chris Bosh was still on the team and they were trying to make the playoffs. It turned bad when that didn’t happen and Chris Bosh signed elsewhere.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

50 million over 5 years NEVER made sense! Not for an 11 and 8 player (at the time) who was (and is) the worst defensive starting point guard in the NBA. Bosh or no Bosh, paying a 1 dimensional player over 10 million/season for 5 years is not good business!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ Co-sign. 50 mil for Andrea Bargnani was even worse. The worst defensive big in the league and by far the worst rebounder. I think I just threw up in my mouth.

Teddy and Da Meat Hook made me chuckle

  • ReHeat

Teddy and Da Meat Hook make sense.

  • Ball.A.BabY

i don’t think they will be ready for the playoffs as there is no star power let alone chemistry, they will probably get an 8th pick or some not so favourable pick for a struggling franchise, but then again number 1 picks don’t usually work out either… sorry Andrea

  • Dirt Squirrels

Some of you guys have no idea what you’re talking about. The Raps are building a TEAM. No superstars (yet, but they are young and some will be stars), but with the way they are building, a young TEAM concept, they will be in the playoffs for many years, and once these guys get a few years behind them, they will be very very good.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Dirt Squirrels, that’s the same KoolAid Colangelo has been pouring for his followers for the past 5 years. He has taken a team with a perennial all-star, the number 1 draft pick, and money to blow, and watched them regress year after year. They are one of the only franchises without a franchise player, and without a top 10 player at ANY position! Do you know have difficult that is?!?! They have been forced to recover from bad colangelo decision after bad colangelo decision and have attempted to change their identity from Euro-ball, to Suns-basketall, to deep team with no talent, to re-building team with no talent. I love the positive enthusiasm, but if your franchise’s end goal is becoming a poor man’s Denver Nuggets, then something is VERY wrong!!!

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Also, I have no clue which current young Raptor you think will develop into a “star”. Derozan and Davis will be solid pros-4th/5th options on a contender, Bargnani has the rebounding mentality of a prom queen and defense mobility of a manatee, and Jonas will be a very solid blue-collar pro. Stars? Hardly!
