Andrew Bynum Already Loves the Philadelphia 76ers

by Eldon Khorshidi | @eldonadam

It would be an understatement—maybe even an injustice—to say the city of Philadelphia is excited about their new-looked basketball team. At an introductory news conference Wednesday, newly acquired Sixers Andrew Bynum and Jason Richardson addressed 2,000-plus screaming fans, showing their excitement to be an integral part of Philly’s future. Bynum, who is expected to be the centerpiece of the organization, is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after next season. As he walked to the podium, he was showered with near-deafening chants of “An-drew By-num” and “Beat L.A.” And just like the mass of people in attendance, the 24 year-old center was smiling from ear to ear. When the question of his long-term status was raised, Bynum said he’s so happy with his new home that he’s already leaning towards staying for a long, long time.

More details, via Philly.com:

At least 15 minutes before Bynum, Richardson, majority owner Joshua Harris, CEO Adam Aron and president Rod Thorn ascended the podium in the sprawling, gorgeous atrium, the crowd was working itself into a frenzy. Sixers coach Doug Collins, fresh off his stint as a basketball analyst, sat in the front row, smiling from ear to ear. Asked if he was considering signing a contract extension with 76ers, Bynum got another roar out of the fans by saying, “Seeing them last year, what Doug (Collins) did with them. They’re a young team with a lot of energy. To be honest, my first experience here’s been so great, I’m really looking forward to making this my home. I’m excited about this team.” To which Harris, grinning from ear to ear, responded: “Where do I sign.”

Can’t wait to see Bynum give Bryant a flying elbow.

I’m loving the way the East is shaping out to be. Seems like a lot of teams just by looking at the rosters are in the middle of the pack. A Philly lineup of Jrue,JRich,TYoung,Allen, and Bynum? Pretty solid starting 5.

  • http://slamonline.com Eldon Khorshidi

Philly is my favorite team in 2K, hands down

  • http://slamonline.com Eldon Khorshidi

I also wonder if Doug Collins will sometimes play a small lineup, with like Thad Young (instead of Allen/Hawes) at the 4 and Bynum at the 5. Could be interesting

“Bynum said he’s so happy with his new home that he’s already leaning towards staying for a long, long time” reminds me a little bit of lebron james promise to cleveland that he would stay until he wins a championship. would be too hillarious if bynum would be the next drama star n then signs with the magic lol

Andrew Bynum = Jermaine Oneal 10 years ago.

  • Philly Cheese

Philly is going to be solid this year. Bynum, Lavoy, Spencer, and Kwame down low, plus quick youth with Jrue, Evan, Nick Young, plus great slasher/shooters with Thad, JRich. If they develop some chemistry, this is going to be the toughest team to bang with on the east

  • Fat Lever

Ok, I watched the press conf. By being out in LA for so long, I think Bynum has mastered the art of BS’ing. Let’s see how this plays out. Sixers have a lot of flexibility in their lineups. They could go conventional with Jrue/ET/Wright/Hawes(ugh!)/Bynum, or they could go big/shooters with ET/Nick Young/JRich/Dorrell/Bynum. It’ll be interesting, but one thing’s for sure. We’re going to see whether Jrue and ET can be stars or very good players in this league. This is their year to show and prove.

Jermaine O’Neal always shot a lot of jumpers.

whxy should he wear a suit? he is supposed to play ball, not to sell you an insurance lol

@t-ray i really don’t think j rich starts over turner. at this point j rich is better as a shooter of the bench

    Thaddeus Young needs to start.

  • Ldub

Good move for all teams. Hopefully Bynum will mature into the role with the Sixers. If he can learn to pass out of a double team and re-post. Dude could get 25ppg easily. Especially on this run and gun team that likes to pass. He should be excited and ready to call this his home for a long time!

He’s gotta have one of the wooliest fros of our lifetime. Last season I thought he was getting grey hair but now I’m thinking his fro is actually attracting pocket lint from anyone that comes within a 10 ft radius. There’s probably been a few barbers that got electrocuted trying to stick clippers in that static mess. Hence him giving up on cuts all together.

  • justin05

Evan Turner is definately going to be the starter for the 76ers next year. Time for him to shine. Bynum will be great for the city of Philadelphia but the Lakers are much better with Howard instead and there is no chance Phili beats LA this season. None.

  • justin05

Best center in the East, yet not even a close second to the best in the League.

  • bike

Here is to hoping Bynum grows a Dr. J size fro. It would be so awesome for the City of Brotherly Love.

  • Skrill

He didnt fit in @ LA he’ll fit in with the 76ers…wish Iddy was still there with him…may be a slow decline for him in Denver

  • robb

the Sixers are gonna be fun to watch

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk Troll

who would win in a fight. Bynum or Dwight???

  • NBA Guru

@NBK TROLL your too damn goofy son! Jermaine O’Neal and Bynum are two totally different type of players…pffft

    @fat lever I couldnt agree more…

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk Troll

I know they play different, im more talking about their careers. Both straight out of HS. Both had slow starts with they first team. Now Bynum about to be a all-star year after year and get no more rings.

  • Basketball_iQ

J oneal avg’d 28-29pts per game ten years ago. Bynum = jO no

  • Tyquan

The Sixers set themselves up to be a solid team for the next 4 to 5 years they are pretty set at all positions what to do with Thaddeus Young should they go small and start him at the four. Jrue Holiday and Nick Young is a good backcourt it gets tricky cuz Philly got like six small fowards but they should start J Rich at the 3 bring Dorrel Wright off the bench for scoring punch. People use this saying all the time but I think a change of scenery is great for Andrew Bynum he will definetly get his 20 and 10 with the way the team is constructed now even tho I think Philly should flip one of those small foward into a power foward who might compliment Bynum better in the frontcourt but the Sixers are the definition of an up and coming team Rod Thorn knows what the hell is doing I guess….

  • http://mail.google.com Jao

They must trade for Josh Smith now!

Philly should make a push for Smith, Horford and Harris expiring contract. They could give up a couple of the plethora wings they have. A combination of Thad Young, Nick Young/Evan Turner and Kwame Brown/Spencer Hawes should do.

  • Tyquan

They have some parallels but I don’t know about that Jermaine O’neal comparison I mean besides Dwight Howard when Andrew Bynum is focused he is a man down there in the post I really hope he and Bogut can stay relatively healthy all season for real.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Thanks I totally forgot about ET

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk Troll

Basketball IQ your a idiot and your name is sooo misleading. JO 2001-2002 stats: 19.0ppg 10.5rpg 2.3bpg 1.3apg… Anrew Bynum 2011-2012 stats: 18.7ppg 11.8rpg 1.9bpg 1.4apg… When in the hell do you remember JO putting up 28 a game? Thats Superstar level, JO was just another all-star. fu(k the raptors!

  • logues

@Basketball_iQ: jermaine o’neal has never come close to 28-29 ppg ever in his career

  • logues

is anyone else having troubles with SLAM’s site? I haven’t been able to see the main 5 headlines for awhile now. It’s just a black screen. And i can’t scroll down on the article headlines to the right of it. I can only view the ones it shows

  • Basketball_iQ

Bynum- center piece they’ve been waiting on.
Thad-no more coming off the bench, PRODUCE
    Evan-you’re a big boy now play with’em-starter
Jrich-not a good bench player at all, must start
Jrue-got rid of lou for you now take over or else

DWright- 1st perimeter guy off the bench, microwave floor spacer
Hawes-1st big off the bench, can back up andrew or sub for thad& get bigger for the wild west bigs

Just liking at this they still need more to compete in the atlantic much less, than vs the LAKERS.LOL
that allen dude is a fluke too, book it

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Bynum is the Centerpiece with questionable knees. Philadelphia is going to be a good solid team that has a chance at getting out of the first round every year Bynum is healthy with Jrue on the roster. That’s the ceiling though.

  • Bojangles

Bynum’s ego is getting blown up to the max after spending his career in Kobe’s city. Now his mouth is gonna start writing cheques his game can’t cash and the Philly fan’s are gonna prove to be too venomous for his immaturity. People are letting a lot of this mans past lapses slide now that he has been given a new start, but he is not skilled or driven enough to be the “man”. Maybe one day he’ll realize how lucky he was to play and win in LA, because while I realize a lot of heat has been shed on Gasol and Kobe for the championship shortcomings, I think that Bynum was the main perp in more than few a playoff ousts. He has shunned aside the guidance of a legendary player, never tapped into his reservoir of “extra” and generally uses his size and coasts to easy points and rebounds thanks to LA’s overall size. Basically what I’m saying is, it’s good to be a Lakers fan. Almost as big as Fletch

  • Bojangles

    I’m high

  • jinolin

nbk, they will have money to spend don’t they?, I dont know what the free agency will look like in 2014. All in all this was a good trade for 3/4 teams, that’s always a good thing right?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Let’s start off wth, this was a great trade for every team except Orlando. All of them improved, and two of them considerably so (LA and Philadelphia).
Philadelphia will have money and trade assets. They definitely have the tools to improve. But with the impending contract that will be Holidays coupled with what Drew will get its safe to assume those two will be their best players for a while – given that assumption, I personally don’t see them being better then the third best team in the East at any point,

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Bynum about to put 22pts and 12rebs up. All Sixers need is a scoring two guard and they would be set.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-theBear

nbk: Who do you think will be the second best team in the East after Miami? Boston?

  • nbk

    Boston for sure my nig

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Probably. Maybe even Brooklyn. I mean Philadelphia could have the 2nd best record in the regular season, but they aren’t beating Boston or Brooklyn for that matter in a playoff series.

Philly needs a Leader Pacers also

Philly needs a Leader Pacers also.. but i think after this season bynum is going to the bulls

  • http://gmail.com z

Excellent analysis psychoanalysis is something you’re good at while high? Cosign everything bojangles said

  • Mas.2

The only reason Bynum stays in Phila is because the can pay him more than any other team. So? How many games will Bynum play this season. My bet is 59 or under.

  • Philly Cheese

no way brooklyn or boston will be better than sixers. all brooklyn has is a solid 1&2, but nowhere near as good of a front court. and all boston has is rondo and some has-beens

  • Kadavour

T.Dot notwithstanding, the Atlantic Division is BACK! It’s going to be a good year of basketball. It was very tough watching horrible EAST COAST play over the years.

  • Kadavour

whoa, Brooklyn has a solid 5, a top 3 rebounder in the league in Hump, a glue guy in Gerald Wallace @ 3, a great (even elite when motivated) scorer in Joe at 2, and 1A PG Deron Williams. On paper, Brooklyn is looking good. We’ll see how that translates on the court.
