Charles Barkley Thinks Clyde Drexler Has Always Been Jealous of Michael Jordan

Charles Barkley opened up about some of the drama from the famed Dream Team, making the claim that Clyde Drexler has always secretly resented Michael Jordan. Per ESPN: “I think Clyde has always been jealous of Michael (Jordan), to be honest with you,’ Barkley said. ‘I think he’s always wanted to be compared to Michael. Hey, we all want to be compared to Michael, but we’re not. Clyde was a great player, but there was always that jealousy of Michael. That was one of the incidents and things about the Dream Team, Clyde was trying to play like it was Game 7 against Michael, and that’s probably not a good idea. When Michael is driving his kids to school, he thinks it’s Game 7.’ And as far as what Drexler reportedly said about Magic Johnson in Jack McCallum’s book: ‘Dream Team,’ Barkley picked a side in a dispute. McCallum wrote that Drexler said that people pitied Magic because of his HIV diagnosis and that was the only reason he was on the Dream Team. But Drexler later denied it and said the quotes were ‘totally ludicrous.’ ‘I like Clyde Drexler, but Jack McCallum is a great guy, and I don’t think he would misinterpret anything,’ Barkley said. ‘I saw some of the statements. I thought they were not very cool at all. I don’t think Jack’s going to make up … first of all, he doesn’t have to make up anything. … If I had to believe somebody, I would probably believe Jack McCallum.’”

Lol, I think every player was jealous of Michael Jordan.

  • pposse

is Barkley just saying this out of spite? Didn’t Barkley play on the Rockets with Clyde and they couldn’t get it done? seems a little fishy to me.

Contrary to popular belief, MJ didn’t destroy Clyde during the 92 Finals. Clyde more than held his own (27ppg), it’s just that MJ was signifcantly better (35ppg). It’s like when people say that Hakeem destroyed Shaq during the 95 Finals despite Shaq avg. 28/12.

  • bdgg

i could see this be accurate. cylde seems like a good guy but i always thought he was somewhat ticked he was never in that category where in the late eighties/early nineties it was magic, bird, mj, barkely and cylde thou he was probably the 2nd best 2 guard it was pretty much a non argument!

  • ctk

Over 20,000pts,6,000rebs,n over 6000 dimes one of only three n NBA HISTORY…Clyde did more than hold his own

  • bdogg

i think there was not a rivalry at all. mj clearly was the best 2-guard in that area. was clyde overlooked..maybe and that ticked the glide off but it is what it is…to be honest though he was a lot younger…penny actually was more a competitor vs mj in the mid-nineties than clyde was if you look at stats and the 95-96 playoffs. he dominated pippen!

“When Michael is driving his kids to school he thinks its game 7″ thats awesome

  • miagus23

always the same story with Clyde… Great player, but not so much personality wise. Guess that ’92 Jordan performance in Game 1 of the Finals is still on Clyde’s mind…

  • ElPayaso

@pposse Barkley never played with Clyde, the year Drexler won his ring with Houston that was his last year in the NBA. He retired after that. Barkley is speaking what only he knows how to speak and that’s the truth. Put it this way, Portland got Drexler in ’83, the ’84 Draft they felt that there wouldn’t be a need or a way to work MJ in their system so they got Bowie. That didn’t work out in their favor at all. ’92 Dream Team practices were brutal where MJ was giving Drexler the business, ironically right after he gave them the business in the finals where he dropped 6 3′s in the first half, shoulder shrug as to where it came from, won the chip a few games later and then declared to Chicago that he was happy they drafted him and not Portland

After that ’92 Finals, Clyde was clearly diminished, and was showing signs of Stockholm Syndrome. Barkley, Clyde, Ewing, Malone, Stockton, Hakeem – these were phenomenal players. They just had the misfortune of being in their prime during the Jordan era.

i think ringless barkley is jealous of both of them lol

Lucky for Hakeem he caught Jordan in between retirements.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

You can tell Charles Barkley was raised by a woman.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I think MJ was fortunate that he never faced a C of Hakeem’s caliber in the Finals.

  • Bt

@elpayaso I stopped reading your comment when you said Barkley never played with Clyde … I took that as a sign you dont know what your talking about (drexler retired in 98 not immediately after he won his chip)

  • pposse

got you elpayaso. I wasn’t sure, i just remember Barkley on the rockets for a little bit.. and you know that saying “familiarity breeds contempt”

  • pposse

wait hold on so he did play wit clyde or no?

  • Mel

I’ve noticed when Barkley joined the Rockets, Drexler took an early retirement. Hmmmmm!!

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

    Yes during the 96-97 season.

If you watched those games, Jordan destroyed Drexler. Drexler wanted nothing to do with Mike. yeah, Clyde got his buckets, but go check out his shooting percentages. For most of the playoffs he was at his career average, which was about 50 percent from the floor, but against Mike, his shooting percentage was horrible. He cracked 50 percent once and was hovering around 42 percent most of the series. He fouled out of two games and had three games with 4+ turnovers.
Nah, Jordan dominated the hell out of Drexler in that series. But, it makes sense that Drexler was going at Mike in Barcelona because he had just lost to Mike in the Finals. He was still salty just like Durant.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

The bigger question is, who’s career would you rather have in basketball, Clyde’s or Barkley’s. Also everybody was jealous of MJ, Pippen even wanted to be traded at one point. That’s why I LOVE how ZEKE would go at MJ, he never cared about the AIRNESS thoughts about him.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Drexler played two years with Barkley.
And Clyde was still averaging 18 a game when he retired, but his percentage had gotten bad. Barkley talks a lot, it’s how he gets paid. Drexler got his ring when he had a chance. Barkley was lazy and didn’t close out on John Stockton’s three pointer.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

I’d rather have Clyde’s career. I think people really forget how great this guy was at his craft. The man damn near had 3 quadruple doubles in his whole career. He could do it all. Unfortunately he played when Jordan played so a lot of players get overshadowed by his Airness.

  • Coach Red

“When Michael is driving his kids to school he thinks its game 7″
He probably told ‘em to take the bus or run with him to school as pre-workout for game 7 :-)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That is a good question Seed.
Barkley gets more overall respect in terms of legacy despite them having roughly equal statistics when you adjust for position. Drexler won a championship and his teams went to multiple Finals with him as the best player. He only made one All-NBA first team, but he played in the same era as Michael Jordan and great point guards.
Barkley only played in one Finals, but managed to win an MVP. Both players slacked on defense.
Personally, I would rather be Drexler because I thought he carried himself with a sort of quiet dignity although that could have been fake. He was a right-handed bandit, but I liked his style. Barkley was awesome, but I he rubs me the wrong way, and I feel like he failed his team with his antics on several occasions.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Allen who’s career would you choose between Ewing and Malone?

  • Do Work

@allenp don’t you mean john paxson? stockton played for the jazz….

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    DO WORK
Nah, Stockton. When Barkley played for Houston with Olajuwon and Pippen, they could have made the Finals if Barkley would have closed out on John Stockton when Malone set a pick. Instead, with the Rockets up by two, Barkley allowed Stockton to come off the pick clean (Malone was holding on the pick) and drain a three pointer in his mouth.
I will forever hate Barkley for that moment. Forever and ever.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

You’re right. I was looking at Drexler’s FG% for the entire 1992 playoff run not the Finals. He actually had a superb run during that playoffs (26/7/7 on 46% shooting) but in the Finals, his efficiency suffered.
AllenP, you seem to underrated Barkely a lot. Learn to keep your personal dislike out of it when ranking players.
Give me Barkley every day of the week and twice on sundays.
Even though the guy never won a championship, he’s significantly better than Drexler (career and talent-wise).

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    T-Ray
Honestly I would rather have Malone’s career, but I like Ewing more.

  • Do Work

@allenp ah i see, i thought you were referring to the suns and bulls series in 93

On a totally random note, as I’ve watched the Olympics so far I’ve noticed tons of white people dominating in many sports, particularly for America.
What I’ve not heard is an argument that white people some sort of innate lung capacity advantage that allows them to dominate at swimming and cycling, or some other genetic explanation for so many more of them are gymnasts.
    Anyone else notice that?

  • KC

damn does charles ever just shut up for 5 minutes. No one cares what you think chuck. At least Clyde has a ring! Mean while chuck is reduced to kissing Jordan’s ass all the damn time. Dude is such a hater.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Actually, Zeke was the biggest Jordan hater of all … he and certain of his cohorts (who shall remain nameless) went at Jordan from the moment he entered the league. Barkley brought it ever game, 82 games per year throughout his career, thus earning the respect of his peers. You notice how hardly anyone ever claps back at Sir Charles. And the fact that he doesn’t have a ring really isn’t his fault. In the ’86 draft, Philly drafted Brad Daugherty No. 1 and could have had a frontline of Moses, Daugherty and Barkley. They then traded away Daugherty for Danny Vranes and Roy Hinson, and with it, Philly’s all but certain ‘chip. It was absolutely, the worst trade in the history of the NBA.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Yea Allen it’s pretty weird but it doesn’t surprise me at all. If anything their intelligence is constantly commented on.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Minorities don’t swim, aren’t that interested in gymnastics and devote most of their time into basketball and track.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

You guys here about that black gymnists Gabby getting bashed on twitter about her hair? I think I was the only one surprised to find out that a majority of them were black women lol

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    JTaylor
I would agree to a certain degree with that last comment.
So why is the argument about athletic dominance by black folks constantly going back to some sort of genetic advantage bestowed by slavery or some other cause?
Did white people develop stronger lungs and more buoyancy because they were devoted to subjugating the world and spent tons of time in ships back in the day? Maybe they mated with dolphins?

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

^^ Who presents the news and who owns the television stations? It’s from their perspective that the news is presented. Secondly, the media is not in the “truth telling” business. It’s in the business of getting ratings. The reporting “angle” you all allude to is the angle that is going to get the most people to tune in, and keep tuning in.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

AllenP, you’re right. I always heard people (even from other blacks) talk about slave masters, through breeding, are the reasons why African Americans are so dominant in athletics. I’m calling BS on that. I know plenty Africans (especially from West Africa) that are superior athletes. There is probably an African on every NFL roster.

  • pposse

back in the slave days in america, supposedly the slave owners would breed the biggest female slaves with the biggest male slaves. Breed is obviously a hurtful word when talking about humans (of any color), but in this context it makes sense since the slave owners and America for that matter looked at blacks as 1/4 a person or something. The babies created were then always bigger than their forefathers. I have no idea if any of this can be proven thru science. But this is what many of the white people i associated myself around believes. If you look at countries in Africa now, most of the people there are normal sized and just look like white people with different skin colors. I tend to think there is some truth to this theory, but idk.

  • pposse

the only way this can be proven is if the love child of candice parker and shelden davis becomes the next shaq. **I also want to correct myself..in no context is it okay to use ‘breeding’ when talking about humans and never does it make sense to refer to anyone that way. i just saw what i wrote down and thats clearly not what i meant.

  • bike

The latest thing going around about genetic advantages for swimmers is wider than average clavacles, larger than average torso to total height ratio, and larger than average hands. Race aside, it’s safe to say certain body types favor certain sports. That’s why you don’t see a lot of 300 pounders running marathons. Those guys head over to the hammer throw.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Allenp: You also never hear the media overshadowing a wh!te athlete’s world record performance with unfounded doping accusations… Or claiming that they’ve faked their ages (as they do with China every time Team USA is beaten).
I think you’re onto something with the boats though. Lonely Island – “I’m on a Boat”??? I think it’s an innate genetic affinity for boats and aquatics.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Lack of technological advancements and nutrition are reasons why most africans are “normal sized”.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Allen, I can tell you the Gymnastics thing, has more to do with financial circumstances than anything else. That is one of, if the not THE, most expensive & time consuming sport there is. Gotta have a decent amount of money and a parent (or someone) with nothing to do every afternoon.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Gymnasts are some of the best athletes I have ever seen though. The sh!t they do is amazing. I can’t even wrap my head around it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Teddy, the time China was accused of faking the age of their Gymnast, they did. It was proven by a hacker.
    .
“Chinese officials last week unveiled a team bound for London with an average age of about 19.5 — nearly four years older than the minimum of 16 required to compete at the Olympics.
    .
How did the Chinese team get so old in a sport that favors the flexibility of smaller, younger bodies? After age controversies dogged the Chinese for more than a decade, the sport’s international governing body in 2009 put in place a system to certify athlete ages. And China’s team, which won gold during the Beijing Games, just didn’t have a deep bench of new teen talent.”

how many of you guys have heard of 13 and younger kids able to dunk a basketball? Dunking in itself is an athletic feat if u ask me. The only people i have ever seen do this have all been black. Remember VC claimed he was dunking at the age of 9! Did any of you guys ever even hear of a non-black kid dunking from 10-13?? i have witnessed kids dunking routinely at the park around my parents house in the suburbs (all of which were black)! It might have something to do with the diet..
