Charles Barkley Thinks Clyde Drexler Has Always Been Jealous of Michael Jordan

Charles Barkley opened up about some of the drama from the famed Dream Team, making the claim that Clyde Drexler has always secretly resented Michael Jordan. Per ESPN: “I think Clyde has always been jealous of Michael (Jordan), to be honest with you,’ Barkley said. ‘I think he’s always wanted to be compared to Michael. Hey, we all want to be compared to Michael, but we’re not. Clyde was a great player, but there was always that jealousy of Michael. That was one of the incidents and things about the Dream Team, Clyde was trying to play like it was Game 7 against Michael, and that’s probably not a good idea. When Michael is driving his kids to school, he thinks it’s Game 7.’ And as far as what Drexler reportedly said about Magic Johnson in Jack McCallum’s book: ‘Dream Team,’ Barkley picked a side in a dispute. McCallum wrote that Drexler said that people pitied Magic because of his HIV diagnosis and that was the only reason he was on the Dream Team. But Drexler later denied it and said the quotes were ‘totally ludicrous.’ ‘I like Clyde Drexler, but Jack McCallum is a great guy, and I don’t think he would misinterpret anything,’ Barkley said. ‘I saw some of the statements. I thought they were not very cool at all. I don’t think Jack’s going to make up … first of all, he doesn’t have to make up anything. … If I had to believe somebody, I would probably believe Jack McCallum.’”

one of my best friends growing up first dunked a ball when he was 13. He was white.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

nbk: “And China’s team, which won gold during the Beijing Games, just didn’t have a deep bench of new teen talent.” That would explain it–that has nothing to do with actually faking their ages. If it were proven beyond a doubt that the women’s team had been faking their ages, they would have been stripped of their 2008 medals. This hasn’t happened and I doubt it will.
USA is one of the worst losers in sports. It really is. During the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the US media ranked nations based on # of Gold Medals, because the US was the world leader in gold medals. Those same media corporations switched their rankings to total # of medals in 2008, just so they could put US as #1 when China was beating them. It’s insane.

my filipino friend was dunking as a 5’8, 14 year old filipino kid

  • bike

I also knew a kid growing up that could dunk at 13. He was white and 6’8″. Unfortunately, he had no interest in basketball and spent most of his high school years stoned to the gills.

I gotta agree with Teddy on this one. Look at that chinese swimmer that won the gold medal in record time. Instead of congratulating and giving her the benefit of doubt, they spent the entire pushing their “she must be cheating” agenda. How come no one posed the same questions when Phelps won 8 gold medals in the 08 Olympics?
Americans have been caught cheating just as much as any other nation in the Olympics.

In 2000, there was at least one underage gymnast: Dong Fangxiao. Her true age wasn’t discovered until 2008, when she applied to be an official in the Beijing Olympics.
    .
(in regards to 2008) One of the gymnasts whose age was in question is He Kexin. As of now, the IOC officially accepts He’s passport, which states that she was 16 at the time of the 2008 Olympics. The investigation is currently closed. However, a blogger named David Walker did find cached web sites that stated that He was 14 at the time of competition, not 16.

i’m not saying the US media doesn’t do everything in its power to make the US look superior, that’s not what i’m arguing. I know that happens.
    .
I’m also willing to bet the Chinese media does the same thing to the Chinese public.

In addition to segregation and fear of drowning, one of the big reasons blacks don’t swim is concern of what it will do to their hair. Women’s hair, that is.
We can do something about segregation and fear but it is impossible to change a women’s opinion about what something might do to their hair.

I’ve known several white kids (and other races) that could dunk when they were 12-13 years old. Two of the white kids that were dunking back then both played volleyball in HS and college and prefered volleyball over basketball. I think a lot of sports are dominated by players who have access to play that sport. More white kids have year round access to swimming pools, diving platforms and more likely have the financial means to afford golf lessons, gymnastics lessons etc. So some of the racial differnces I would argue are more about opportunity/access than anything else. Thats why so few blacks are in the winter olympics, many of the people who ski, snow-board etc are from Utah and other areas where they have more access to mountains. If more blacks/asians/latinos lived near ski slopes, you’d find more in the olympics. If more put thier kids in programs where they could get year round training for gold, tennis, swimming, gymnastics etc, you would find more culture in those sports as well. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that the majority of beach volleyball players come from cities/states where there are a lot of beaches.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Sorry to go off subject gentlemen, but Drexler shouldn’t be jealous of anyone. No NBA All Star or Superstar player really should.
You are doing the most you can with your talents right? Then why be jealous of a guy that’s doing the most with his and it just so happens he is out doing you. Drexler’s career is far from something to be ashamed of. Personally I don’t know who I have better all time between him and Jerry West. Drexler was an amazing player. He should and i’m sure is comfortable with who he is and how his career panned out.

  • http://nba.com GP23

I’m white, 6’4, and I can dunk it pretty easily. Not trying to sway this convo into a “who can do what?” section. But, I’m just saying. White people can JUMP ! (Billy Hoyle anyone?) lol…
Anyway, racial stereotypes are still around with what someone can or can’t do…..

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    Allenp
I agree with you, I would take Drexler career over Barkley. Drexler gets not credit for his career, he was clearly overshadowed by MJ. Imagine if they would have played with each other. Would MJ have been MJ. Its neat how things work out. Barkley is jealous of everyone that has a ring. Kenny kills him with that.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

my boy was 5’9″ – he hit puberty at like 9. Kid had a 40″ vertical by middle school (he also played more hoop than anybody i knew at that age). He was white. It’s more a matter of when you mature, and how you go about athletic activities. Jumping high doesn’t just randomly happen. You have to develop the muscles.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

nbk: The only problem is that the US/Europe have the most expansive, wide-ranging and powerful media corporations in the world. If they associate an entire country with cheating enough times, people start believing it even if it’s not true. That’s how advertising/propaganda works. They were incredibly salty that 16-year-old Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen broke a white girl’s record and out swam male studs Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps in the final 50 m. Instead of praising her for making history on an incredible performance, as they would ANY white athlete, they tried to slander her. This is unbelievably bush league. For her third event, the women’s 4 X 200 m relay, she had to stay up until 2 am the night before doing a drug test… Talk about sabotage.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

To be clear, I’m disagree with the idea of these innate genetic differences caused by selective breeding.
I lean towards access and dedication as driving who excels at which sports.
But I think it’s funny that the same folks who make the argument for black folks that it’s all in the genes, or at least partially in the genes, rarely do the same for white rowers or bicyclists.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Co-sign Teddy on the media aspect. It’s so powerful that it can literally brainwash people’s minds into believeing something that THEY (the media) want them to believe.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

I honestly think that everybody that played during the nineties is jealous of Michael Jordan. If Michael Jordan hadn’t played then a lot of stars would have rings. Malone and Stockton, Barkley, Drexler, Ewing, and maybe Penny and Shaq. So everybody is jealous of him. But Charles is the one that talks about it most. My father and nbk’s troll both hate Michael Jordan because my dad was a fan of the Lakers in the nineties. Their worst era. My brother, as i’m sure every poster here is aware of is just an idiot.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

No other media rivals the US/Europe’s and no, nobody from Chinese media accused Mike Phelps or any other white athletes of doping after breakout performances in Beijing. They are not the same whatsoever. A Chinese doctor did accuse Mike Phelps of doping this year, and the media treated it as a joke.
There actually HAVE been other surprise stories these games, with a 15-year-old Lithuanian girl winning gold who also “came out of nowhere,” as well the French team beating out USA. Here’s a headline from a Reuters (UK-based) article:
    “WRAPUP 5
    - Olympics – Lithuanian girl, 15, star of heroics in the pool
    * Swimming surprises cap dramatic day at Games
    * French, Lithuanian victories against the odds
    * Questions over Chinese swimmer’s stellar times [LOL!]
    * Swiss soccer player expelled for racist tweet”
They aren’t even trying to hide it. It’s so childish and so pathetic.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

And I agree with Teddy about how they did that Chinese girl. Little white chicks are setting world records four years AFTER getting rid of the bodysuits that were supposed to make world records unattainable and no one has any questions? Really now?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Here’s another little-known fact: Since 1968, when PEDs were banned from international competition, the US has had eight athletes test positive for PEDs either during or after competing in the Olympics. China has had one. ONE! And for volleyball.
(That being said, lots of countries have athletes who dope but most are caught before they can compete in the Olympics).

  • bike

Jumping ability can be developed by hard work like playing lots of b-ball and plyometric exercises but it also has a strong genetic component. Some guys are born with a higher proportion of fast twitch muscle fibers. That goes for any race. In basketball, the most elite leapers are almost exclusively black. There really isn’t a track and field event that measures pure leaping ability – the high jump is more of a technical event and the long jump is more of a speed event. I guess that maybe we should assume the science behind this debate is guilty until proven innocent.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i totally agree about the media teddy. i was strictly talking about the gymnastic teams. it’s pretty widely accepted that the Chinese used underage gymnasts in Beijing. But it’s pretty hard to disprove something that is being supported by an entire country unless the actual athlete whose age was “changed” is who screws up, as Dong did in 2008 (which resulted in China’s olympic bronze from 2000 being stripped). I don’t care either way, if a younger girl beats older girls at a sport that is reliant on practice time and dedication rather than whatever advantage being younger in the sport provides (increased flexibility & a lower chance of injury, really being the only advantages) then good for them. I just know, China has a history of changing the age of their Gymnasts, up until this year, when the new screening process for age was implemented, and the teams average age jumped over 2 years higher then it has been during any previous Olympics. China has been caught cheating in the past and would have gotten away with it if the athlete whose age they changed didn’t apply to be an Olympic judge. There is little to no reason to believe they wouldn’t do it again.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I am not arguing that China cheats more than other countries, or that our media doesn’t try and demonize other countries. At all.

@bdogg “…to be honest though he was a lot younger…” Clyde Austin Drexler- June 22, 1962. Michael Jeffrey Jordan- February 17, 1963. That’s eight months. He career falls directly in line with Jordan’s.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Fair enough, bro. Thanks for clarifying.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

yeah, i was not trying to make it seem like i support the narrative played by the American Media. I know it came off that way, didn’t mean it like that. I think it’s total bullsh*t how this stuff is portrayed. For the record.

I mastered kegel excercise when I was only 7 years old. As a result, the force of my skeet is comparable to that of a shotgun blast. Neither side of my family has mentioned any feat relative to my ability. So probably some genetic potential unlocked by my hard work (pun intended) and dedication.

U.S. and Europe media are big in the US and Europe, but not so big in the rest of the world. I doubt that the Chinese media made nearly as much of a deal about the girl being accused of doping as did the US media. It was huge news in China durig the beijing olympics about Phelps being accused of doping and having to undergo additional testing. However, that wasn’t widely discussed/reported in the U.S. My guess is that media likes to either protect or support thier own. I think any swimmer of any race that had such a dramatic change from thier previous timed swims would have had the exact same treatment as far as undergoing additional testing – it just makes since and is/was the prudent thing to do. Not because she was chinese but because she had never posted a time anywher near that before. It’s easy to point to race/nationality/creed etc. as an excuse/motivator, but sometimes it’s not that at all. Lance Armstrong has prbably be accused of doping more than any other athlete I can think of, and he’s a white guy with a ‘great’ story of overcoming cancer etc. I’m sure if he was black/asian people would say that it was racially motivated too.

  • bike

Ye beat her personal best by 5 seconds which is almost unheard of at this level. This day and age, a dramatic improvement over a short period of time is what raises eyebrows in any sport. It’s the times we are in.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

The US/Europe have the most expansive media in US and Europe, not in asia (almost non-existent in China). During the last summer games it was huge news that Phelps was accused of doping and had been forced to take additional test. However, that got very little media coverage in the US. My guess is that this girls doping acusation isn’t getting nearly as much attention in China as it it in the US. Sometimes doping accusations just make since when an athlete has an unusually fast time compared to all the previous times that specific athlete recorded. Shaving a full 4 seconds off your previous fastest time is more than enough reason to cause suspetion. Lance Armstrong has been accsed of doping more than any other athlete I can name. I bet if he was black or asian people would say those accusations were racially motivated as well.

  • Heals

Not disagreeing with US being sore losers, BUT in addition to what nbk has brought up, the Chinese swim team (not sure what events in specific) was caught doping at a “World” event within the last year. The girl shaved 5 seconds off her previous time (unheard of in swimming) and bested Lochte final lap from Beijing, c’mon to not raise an eyebrow or at least address the issue would be even more of a problem to me…

  • LA Huey

    LOL. It’s me, homie.
Man, this slave-gene theory is so offensive. My mother is Japanese, my father is African-American, and I’ve been athletically active from a very young age. It’s annoying as hell, when someone assumes my abilites are based primarily on genetics and not the time and effort I put into developing my game.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Bike
Actually, they say Phelps shaved 4 seconds off his personal best from his first Olympics to his second when he was a similar age.
They actually said that on the broadcast.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

If Clyde was in any other era, he would likely been in the debate as the best SG. He was a special player, no doubt about it. He played for a small market most of his career and didn’t have a very ‘flashy’ personality. I highly doubt he was ‘jealous’ of MJ or anybody else. He probably wondered why he didn’t get the hype, and I’m not sure if he would have wanted it or not. I think it was Chris Mullen who said that he would have hated to be in the shoes of Magic, Larry or MJ because wherever they went they would get mobbed and couldn’t live a ‘normal’ life. However, he could walk around town with his wife and kids, go to resturants, movies etc and possibly sign a few autographs, but nothing over the top. I think Clyde had the best of both worlds, he had money, fame, stats and most importantly a public life he could with his family. A 23 year old player probably wouldn’t have understood that, but by time he was on the dream team, he probably understood that well.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    Allenp:
Because Phelps shave so much time off his record that’s why he was accused of doping and it was the biggest thing mentioned in the chineese media for several days. Didn’t get a lot of play in the us media but a ton of press in the asian markets. That’s partially why I think that this girls doping suspicions didn’t get much play in the chinese market (I’m not in China so I don’t know for sure. BTW, I was in China during the last olympics and saw the coverage first hand. When I talked to my family in the US, they didn’t even know he was accused of anything). The power of the media

  • http://nba.com GP23

    Huey, tell me about it.
You seen the “White Men Can’t jump” movie??
That movie has pretty much been my life story. A lot of my black and white friends seem surprised I can jump outta the gym, like I am not human lol. That’s not their fault for being baffled, but from the racial stereotypes still evident in today’s society….

There were a lot of questions about Phelps doping in the 08 Olympics. He tested clean and I suspect Ye will too. I actually don’t believe that level of improvement is that unusual for a swimmer that young. But any spike in performance comes under scrutiny these days.

  • Brad09

a girl posting a faster time, a 16 teen year old with China? with the rep that country has I think its safe to say shes a doper. Until she is proven innocent people will probably think hes a doper, rightfully so. Btw we are talking about the same country who forced yaos parents to have him

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The Chinese Girl tested clean within a day of the race.
I mean, do people think the doping just magically kicked in for one race, but she didn’t use it in all her other heats and races? Because it’s not like she’s been blowing everyone out of the water in every race. It was just that one race.

@Ap, We in here talking bout swimming, not, not Hoops, but swimming, not hoops, I mean not hoops, but swimming, swimming!?!? Thanks for the tidbit on Phelps (you too BossT), I was referring to the announcer saying it was 5 secs off her qualifying time the previous day though. No biggie, she’s still incredible either way…

It actually took me a second to catch that reference.
I don’t know if she was doping or not, she could be. But, like Teddy said, it grinds my gears that when some people are amazing their is one narrative, but when other people are amazing the narrative changes.
