Chauncey Billups on New-Looked Lakers: ‘Don’t Nobody Scare Me, Man’

Clippers guard Chauncey Billups, who’s as tough an NBA player as there is, said that while he respects what the cross-town rival Lakers have accomplished this offseason, people shouldn’t count out his Clippers—or the other 29 teams—just yet. The former Finals MVP is currently rehabbing his left Achilles tendon, with hopes of being ready for L.A.’s regular-season opener. Via The Detroit Free Press: “‘They are trying to stack the deck over there, but I tell you what—I’m very pleased with my team and what we’ve been able to do and I will just say this – don’t nobody scare me, man,’ said the former Piston with a chuckle. Billups, who was Finals MVP when leading the Pistons to the 2004 NBA title, spoke briefly with the Free Press over the phone Saturday afternoon and said his rehab is ‘going well.’ Billups, 35, suffered the injury in the February and some wondered if the 15-year veteran was facing the end of his career.”

Well, they’re only a basketball team. Not a military, militia, or mercenary group.

Finals MVP against a Laker team w/ Shaq, Kobe, Mailman, and The Glove. Respect it.

    What?
I really can’t understand this, “Don’t Nobody Scare Me, Man”.
    Do Not Nobody Scare Me?
Confusing for people who ain’t African American.

With MWP and Pau Gasol / D12 at the same ____ time, Horry Jr has uncannily aligned himself with a team with “exceptionally more talent than the rest of the league.” Is that the “danger music” the Shock Exchange hears in the background?

Can’t wait to see Blake n Dwight go against each other high fylers baby!

Pretty sure he is………Well, once he sees them live he’ll get back to his senses. Ain’t no way Clips are better than LAL in any way…..

“Always ready no need to get ready” -Chauncey Billups
Whenever I say this people are like oooh. haha

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danpowers

hm lets break thaat down. cp3 will multilate nash. kobe wont have a tough time scoring against billups. the lakers dont have anything against butler. id call pau vs griffin draw (unless griffin learned during the summer how to play d) howard vs jordan is a clear advantage lakers. the clips bench is clearly better than the lakers bench if odom gets anywhere close to the lakers odom. if not the clips bench would be still slightly better. i dont really know what to think about both teams coaches, i think this season will be the last chance for both to show that they deserve to coach these talented squads. if their teams struggle they will both be on a hot seat due to their “coaching flaws” of the past season. so its hard to tell which team will be better, i dont know if the bryant / howard advantage over their matchups will be enough for the lakers to surpass their town “rival”. on paper they look pretty even.

  • bike

“Don’t nobody scare me” translates to “Well, yeah, to be honest I am kinda worried about it. I mean they are really stacked now and I admit I don’t like to take it inside against a beast like Dwight. We will probably get creamed when we play those guys”.

I forgot the clippers picked up Odom. They actually shouldn’t be scared of anyone. They don’t have the top end talent of the Lakers, but they are deeper.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

nbk troll, lay off the Raptors, nobody brought them up. As for this, nobody will admit to being scared, that will give the Lakers an edge by knowing the opponent has fear. But, for the purposes of a good thread, who you guys got in a seven game playoff series, no injuries, no controversy, and the Lakers and Clippers have both geled perfectly. Oh, and Nash and Howard’s backs are fine, and so is Chris Paul’s thumb. GO

With Pau Gasol/D12 at the same ____ time, the Lakers have exceeded the “Horry Jr Differential” – the talent required to overcome Horry Jr’s penchant for throwing the ball at the basket. He can now take 40 shots/game at a 30% clip and L.A. would still win.

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Stop hating, that comment by Shock Exchange was hilarious.
Stop using “Horry Jr.” though, it takes away from the point. You should have just called it the “Kobe Differential.” Hell, I might start using that term myself.
And I still don’t think Gasol and Dwight can overcome it. Nash might be able to if he dominates the ball. But Kobe is the strongest personality on the team and just just doesn’t give a f*ck. The player who doesn’t give a f*ck has the most power on any team. Think about it.

    Mubwar
You really took that seriously? It was a joke. Like I said, Canada has too many white people for the U.S. to ever think about invading it for its natural resources. Y’all have the complexion for protection. Lol.

  • Horsey

Canada is part of the United Nations and has been since they made that group back in 1945. America doesn’t invade because it would violate a ton of agreements and basically piss the world off. Besides, Canada is full of white people who speak English. No invasion.

How is suggesting that the US is better than Canada racist? It has nothing to do with race.
It’s nationalistic. It’s simplistic. But it’s not racist.
Anyway, I’m from the South, born and raised in fact. What I said was in jest but it contained a kernel of truth. Canada is a decent place to live with nice natural resources. Yet for years, the United States respected it’s borders while it clearly did not respect the borders of Mexico or the independent Indian confederations that made up the Midwest, West and Southwest. That was related to two things. One, white people and a ton of them lived in Canada. Two, those white people had other, even stronger white people watching their backs.
Checkmate. Otherwise, Canada would have gotten annexed for sure.

    Miami will be 62-20

So back to basketball, is Billups still a starting two in the L?
Has anyone heard how his game is post surgery?
Is there any chance Crawford starts at the 2?

(not that he ever was, but ya know what i’m saying)

Thanks, it hard to convey tone on the Internet. I’m very… well, you know

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

@BM, I agree Chauncey will probably start, but the minutes will almost certainly be split in half w Crawford. Grant Hill could see some time at the 2 as well defending Kobe, JJ, etc.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

they might start Caron Butler at the 2 and Grant Hill at the 3 anyway.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

It will 100% be split. And when they play the Lakers Grant Hill will see some time on Kobe. Nut not the whole game

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Grant Hill will see the majority of Kobe time. The majority of every best offensive wing while he’s on the court time.

Never thought of that nbk, forgot about Caron. Damn the Clippers have some crazy options they can use with that bench. I hope Vinny’s been taking some coaching seminars this summer. To just use his stale-ass offense & philosophies with the potential flexibility of this team would be TRAGIC.

If they do fire VDN who would interim? Would they be able to hire away someone like Brian Shaw? I hope to see VDN fired too im looking for opinions on the next move.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

If they do fire him then Brian Shaw would be a great interim/ full time coach. Wanted Lakers to hire him. Stupid Mike Brown

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

they would be able to hire anyone they think fits. personally, i would try and add Brian Shaw, Mike D’Antoni, or Nate McMillan – off the top of my head, they seem like they would mesh well with that roster. Shaw off of reputation, D’Antoni off of personell, and McMillan off of how he handles personalities.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

@nbk Shaw or McMillan would be good but the Clippers are relatively weak defensively but pretty strong offensively so I don’t think D’antoni would be the best choice. But he wouldn’t be bad either

  • davidR

i wish the clippers played with a lot more attitude. like, if they all played like heels in the wwf, drawing heat from the crowd by showboating and taunting.
they definitely have the characters and the ability to do it

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

D’Antoni & Paul would be a perfect match. I didn’t know for sure if teams could lure coaches from other staffs midseason. Hell that whole team would be a perfect match for D’Antoni. His system doesn’t require a huge commitment to defense.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

No matter who coaches that team, they are going to be unbalanced defensively. I just think if you can take advantage of Paul and those athletes as much as possible you have a legitimate chance to beat anybody. I doubt they do anything significant as a defensive team regardless of the coach. But i do admit, with some seasoning, they definitely have the potential.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Haters come out of the wood work, but D’Antoni is made for the Clippers.
They really don’t have allot of players that want to buckle down and play tough nose defense. Soooo… Go the D’Antoni route. Blake and CP3 alone would make it work. Jordan would fit just fine. Butler’s still athletic. He would work with them.
Anyone but Del Negro is what it comes down to though.

  • LA Huey

I would love to see D’Antoni coach the Clips. Can you imagine a CP3 and Billups on the SSOL juice? Crawford and Bledsoe off the bench. Blake…Let’s hope they do start 0-10. Or VDN gets caught choking a prostitute.

  • davidR

lakeshow, i agree. d’antoni needs to be on the clippers

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

I meant that they are fine offensively so they need a coach that’s committed to both. Like Brian Shaw. That’s what gets you championships. Not alley oops or high flyers. Teams that are great offensively and defensively. Coaches that stress offense and defense. Like Phil Jackson and Pat Riley. That’s why they have so many rings. Not D’antoni. But the ownership is stupid and not commited to winning. But Mike wouldn’t make them suck, but wouldn’t make them great either

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

thanks for info nbk… honestly I had no idea anyone would ACTUALLY give a maniac like shock exchange a book. seriously I’m not reading 200 pages of “horry jr.” “at the same ____ time” and him documenting dropping “giddy” on people.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Black, sorry but nobody is making them great. if the Clippers want to compete for a title with that roster, they have to do it with a gimmick. Like running other teams into the ground (which supposedly Paul doesn’t like, which is also the only reason i see not to go after D’Antoni if VDN were fired) – they aren’t going to win a title no matter who coaches them unless they find something they can do that totally over matches other teams. No matter who coaches them, that thing won’t be defense. You can’t make Blade Griffin and DeAndre Jordan just become great defenders out of thin air. They either need time (multiple years) to develop it, or they need to play to and improve on their already visible strengths.

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

I hope he gets caught choking a prostitute too. No ill will towards the guy. But that way you know nobody like Jordan or the Magic (sorry Caboose) will get any ideas about giving this guy another shot.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

All true points. But if the ownership actually cared about winning then they would get defensive players and somebody that can coach both ends of the floor. Or get a really hard nosed coach to make them work defensively. Because right now they are pathetic to watch. 0-10 start or not, VDN has to go.

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

Cosign Datkid, out in paperback in Sept.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Black, the owner is Donald Sterling. You can’t expect anything like that out of him. There is a disconnect here – you should learn about the guy who owns the Clippers – then you’ll realize why the motto for what the Clippers SHOULD do, is “take what you can get” – lol – but seriously, that should be the motto. Anyway, they need seasoning no matter how they go about winning. Frankly they are too inexperienced and disjointed to win anything significant this early as far as i see them. i just think someone else can expedite the winning process better for them. Even if it’s the Pringles Man.

I think the clips only real advantage here is cp3 and the depth of their bench. The lakers are virtually superior everywhere else. Cp3 must take over if they play them. lake they were REALLY dangerous with Chauncey starting. Unless there’s been a big drop off, I’d do That again. Grant hill starts against Kobe but against anyone else, Caron butler is probably a better fit. And as for coaches… What about Larry brown or Jerry Sloan?

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

    Lmao @LA huey

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Larry Brown would murder DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin before November. Jerry Sloan would probably try and run them over with a tractor.

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

In the end though id rather see Brian Shaw get his first shot than D’Antoni or McMillan get their third. WHAT DOES BRIAN SHAW GOTTA DO TO GET A CHANCE? Terry Stotts? Jaque Vaughn? Jaque Vaughn is one of my all-time favs from his college days here at KU, but still a VERY questionable hire for a NBA head coach gig.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Agree Dat.
I liked Billups at the two. Thought he was solid.
Nice thing is they have 3 or 4 other players to toss in the 2 spot if Chauncey isn’t ballin.
    .
Not trying to be all Kobe homer here, but why is it that we think Grant Hill does a good job on Kobe?
Honestly Butler plays him just as well. Maybe advance stats say otherwise?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Grant Hill does as good of a job as anyone. If you want to remind me tomorrow I can show you why (i’m pretty sure i remember correctly) Grant Hill is about as good of a defensive player on Kobe as anyone in the league. It’s not like he’s a “Kobe Stopper” by any stretch of anyone imagination, but I think he is just about as good as it gets.

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

@Lake, I was just going by Grant Hills reputation as a “Kobe Stopper”, as if such a thing existed besides father time.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

No, I agree. Hill is as good as they come. I just would be surprised to see Hill get more than 20 mins on Kobe in a game. Seems like these days quick lil guys bug Kobe more than good defending bigger, but slower guys.
I could see Billups and Bledsoe getting allot of run on Kobe also.
Ya’ll are right, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t perceived that G-Hill shuts down Kobe on the reg or anything.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

I know Sterling is a penny pinching jackass. That’s why they were so bad before this cp3-Blake duo. I bet anything that he won’t fork out the cash to keep cp3 and he leaves at the end of this year. So these players better GET commited to defense because they have a short window. Remember, the cavs got Kyrie because the Clippers traded the first overall pick!

  • LA Huey

nbk, is right. You have to maximize the Clippers’ strength to for them to their potential and if the SSOL Suns couldn’t even reach the Finals, there’s no way Karma would let the Clippers get there.

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

@BM, I thought Tristan Thompson was off the Clippers pick. I definately could be mistaken though.

  • LA Huey

Nope. Clips basically traded Baron and Kyrie for Mo Williams.

  • jinolin

    Mama there goes that man.

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

Yeah Huey… The clips could’ve had the fastest youngest one of the most athletic starting 5′s in the L. Kyrie at the 1 EG at the 2, Aminou at the 3 with Blake and Deandre 4 and 5. That’s OKC level talent there, when properly coached. I would LOVE to see what that team could do together

Allen summed up wat the lakers biggest variable will be this season pretty well: kobe’s attitude. When he’s making the smart, team first plays, reading the floor well and looking to involve the bigs early in the clock, i think he’s still the best (naaah i cant say that…he’s 2nd for now) player there is. And when he played that way during his prime he was on par with mj or any other guard thats ever played hands down…it’s just those instances were all too rare. I cant blame him. If you or i were as talented, skilled and dedicated to a given craft as he is to bball we’d wanna explore the full range of possibilities, see how far it can take us…does that mean we’re selfish? But he’s gotta realize that those days are over now (which im very confident that he does), play this season the right way and try to build chemistry for the playoffs. That being said, i think miami beats the lakers in the finals. Lebrons a friggin beast. They got no excuse to not win every year with him in his prime.

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

I hear ya BM, thanx I always thought it was the no. 4 pick that came from the Mo Williams trade. Dumb f%#kin luck.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Ya the Clippers screwed that up royally. But they might have not gotten Chris Paul if they had drafted Kyrie. Interesting stuff.

  • Dankenstein

Always seems like Allenp brings up the white folks. It’s okay, I’d be salty too if I was black with the name Allen.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

I feel like Chauncey needs to start at the 2. Having both him and CP3 on the floor at the same time somewhat decreases Del Negro’s overall effect on the game. Which is kinda important.

  • Drig

Tall lanky defenders with decent lateral quickness bother Kobe the most. Esp. if it’s in the second half of games, he’s more likely to face up to him and shoot over the top a long ranger. That’s the problem LAL neesd to take care of.

  • http://realgm.com Nate Jay

Lakers 3 maybe 4 games outta 5. Cp3 will beat Nash. But what will je do once he sees Pau and Howard down low. But if Cp3 gets a lot of turnovers and fasbreak points they might get a W.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Overall a very interesting thread. Lots of different topics. Catch y’all tomorrow

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

I remember a few years ago NBK would say some pretty ridiculous things, & I would just skip over his comments, now I read them & agree with them too. Dude got smart. Funny how times change.
AllenP with the subtle ‘eh’ in his Canadian joke ribbing. I see you.

  • pposse

chris paul vs steve nash is a pretty even matchup – atleast history says so. Head to head CP3 won 9 times to Nash’s 10 victories. CP has scores about ten more points a game, but they shoot the same fg% and have the same assist numbers.

  • pposse

does chris paul still wine and dine other pg’s in the league the night before he plays them?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Thank you for catching that Hursty.

  • Roscoe

the clippers poor FT% should scare Billups.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Canada is not worse than the US at anything except cable.
On “Hardwood Classics” for NBA TV Canada, they had a marathon of Toronto vs. Milwaukee regular season games from 2007-2011.
    I sh!t you not.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Also add Chandler Parsons to the list of guys who guard Kobe well (relatively speaking, of course).
