Dirk Nowitzki Says He’ll Play Two More Seasons, Then ‘See How I Feel’

Dirk Nowitzki is 34 years old—not exactly old enough to start booking retirement vacations, but old enough to toss the idea around and begin thinking about how many more years his body can sustain a professional basketball career. According to the Dallas Morning News, the big man claims he’s good for at least two more seasons, and then he’ll reevaluate what he’s got left from there: ”Dirk Nowitzki staged an impromptu Q&A on Twitter on Sunday and told fans he would like to play at least two more seasons, and that he bleeds Mavericks blue. The 34-year-old Mavericks forward responded to one question asking how many more years he wanted to play with: ’2 for sure and then see how I feel.’ Nowitzki has two years remaining on the four-year, $80 million deal he signed in 2010. When asked why he doesn’t just jump to a ‘Super Team’ and try to win a championship elsewhere, Nowitzki replied: ‘I bleed blue.’ Those are positive signs for Mavericks fans after a tough summer of pursuing Deron Williams and losing out on the Brooklyn point guard. When asked if he feels the team the Mavericks have put together can win a championship this season, Nowitzki replied: ‘I always feel that way.’”

Better appreciate guys like Dirk, Duncan and Kobe while they’re still around.

Knowing Mark Cuban, he’ll make a blockbuster trade before the deadline. So look for the Mavs to make a move soon.

Kobe called this a month ago.

“When asked why he doesn’t just jump to a ‘Super Team’ and try to win a championship elsewhere, Nowitzki replied: ‘I bleed blue.’” = I already got a chip and my legacy has more to lose than gain if I were to go to another team.

I have too much respect for Dirk and even more now. It would have been interesting to see the Mavs with Deron and Dirk together, but I must say that their front office has recovered quite nicely. Chris Kaman isn’t the presence Tyson was obviously, but I think he’s a better all-around center, and Darren Collison is a nice young point guard. Throw in OJ Mayo with some of the other young talent that they have accumulated and you have a team that I wouldn’t mind seeing play. Hope the Mavs can prove to be a deep team and a threat in the West.

One of the few stars who has never asked to be traded, begged for help or threatened to leave.

Actually he did ask for help. And he never threatened to leave, but noises were made.

  • Rainman

All he said was we gotta improve. After getting swept. Knowing full well the team wud already be trying to aquire deron. he didnt say “Get me help or im out” Lets keep it into perspective, noone ever thought he was gonna get traded. There really wasnt any “noise” Unless u’re talking about another time in his career. Even then i cant think of a time

  • The Seed

Dirk is basically stating my career is over and I understand that, so I should just retire now, so everyone can talk about my one year of brilliance with JJ Barea, Jason Terry and Tyson help.

I think not playing in the Olympics is really going to help Dirk out. He never had his legs last year (did you see the guy run!?) which means his shot wasn’t Dirk-esque.

  • The Fury

Hey c’mon man, it’s been a more than a year since they swept your Lakers (stop being bitter). Past is past and move on..lol.

  • grgeblck

dirk sounded not motivated at all…after that championship, i felt like he became a different person…. no goals to aim… in 10 years from now, no one is going to remember Mavs actually had a championship. c’mon dirk! even jason kidd still has some fuel to run!

  • Zabbah

Kaman Islands is nice, I hear you, but the defense that Chandler brings in by far makes up whatever offensive deficiencies he has.

I feel like this team is built like a 1yr rental team.(Brand, Collison etc)
It’ll come down to whether they’re playing for contracts (ie individual stats) or the team (winning). Hopefully, it’s the later.

  • Roscoe

No joke… He really looked like a hip replacement candidate and in a lot of pain.

  • Roscoe

Dirk has as many titles as LeBron everyone.

  • Roscoe

Brand is trending down… but Kaman should have a big year being a contract year. It is an interesting lineup.

  • Roscoe

Partying like a German rock star has impacts I guess.

  • Darksaber

Hopeless, dude can’t see the forest through the Kobe trees… Oh well, getting swept while everyone thinks you are the favs to win a playoff series SUCKS.

  • AiRsMiTh

Yeah, you’re right. I do think a combination of Dirk and Kaman could give both of them good looks on offense though, since they can both score. Defense is another story as we all know. I’m just as interested to see if Bernard James can play a Tyson-ESQUE role on defense.
