Greg Oden Wants to Be a Gym Teacher If NBA Career Doesn’t Work Out

If his hard-fought NBA comeback doesn’t pan out, Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 Draft, has a back-up career plan: Oden wants to be a gym teacher. Via CBSSports.com: “‘If it happens, it happens,’ Oden said. ‘I’ve got to move on with my life. I know I want to play basketball. If I physically can’t play basketball, then I’ve got to move on … I’ve still got to wake up tomorrow. I’ve still got to live. One day, I’m going to want a family and I’ve got to provide for them. So if basketball doesn’t work out, you gotta keep it moving… I actually want to be a [high school or middle school] gym teacher,’ he said. ‘I feel like they have the best job ever. You think about it, they get their weekends off and they get to wear sweats every day to work.’”

  • LA Huey

Sweet deal if you got some money coming in on the side. I would have loved to be a science teacher but I’m too selfish for science teacher salaries.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Oden dont wanna teach at no middle school, kids are some cruel SOB’s. They’ll be clowning him from day 1

So Portland drafted a Gym Teacher??? This dude! SMH

  • Philly Cheese

LOL he actually got drafted over Durant.

  • CubicleWorker

Funny when the extent of your motivations is to wear sweat pants every day lol

  • FnF

Nothing says creepy like a gym teacher who sends d*ck pics.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Cubicle is right to question greg. He sounds like a stupid kid picking the easiest thing. Fnf has a point as well. Oden and darko need to open a restaurant together. Darkodens pizza.

  • greg

I can see him doing alright in the nba even still, the center position is just that weak

  • Robert Salazar

    He has weak knees

  • TheBigL

I love Oden but seriously – “if”?

  • Mischief

    A gym teacher is a old person’s job. Wait…

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I want to be a psychologist because they get to sit in those comfy chairs every day.

  • pposse

my freshmen english teacher in h.s used to play for the portland trailblazers. I have no idea what happened to his career, the rumor is he got kicked out for drug use or something. Maybe its something in the water over there in Portland. Why is Greg Oden even pondering life after basketball anyways?! he needs to have the D Rose attitude and “be all in”

  • YANA

    got to pay the bills…

  • marc

Word he needs to focus he still young. (According to his birth certificate). He can give a team some good minutes. He’s not going to be elite or a difference maker but he can help somehow. lol

  • Hook

Without injures, Oden would have been the second center of the decade. Awesome shot blocker, incredible timing, excellent rebounder, great finisher… Bad luck.

(Greg Oden voice)”Okay kids … I brought the math teacher in to teach you guys how to walk and chew gum at the same time. I’m gonna have to sit this one out.”

  • pposse

prediction: greg oden goes to Miami midseason

  • bike

He should set his sights on a season in the D-league and try to demonstrate some durability. Someone will take a chance on him if they think they can get 10-15 min./game.
Just remember Greg – if Curry can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

  • McWill

Funny thing is, on my “my player” career for 2K12, this dude is an all-star averaging a double double for the rockets…lmao…but I knew he was going to decline quickly when I seen him walking around the Portland Trailblazers facility in Shape Ups lol but seriously there is something wrong with the water in Portland.

  • Kevin

why dosen’t he just go do the kobe treatment at least make your best attept to come back

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Speaking of 2k there’s no Pippen this year.

  • Riggs

    this dude already gave up.

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk Troll

Oden needs to get on a reality show or something.

  • gusisit

not sure if you seen happy gilmore or not but shooter magavin said ” every time i come to portland it gets harder to leave, i heard you guys put something in the water” random fact but this convo just reminded me of it

  • cdro

good luck Greg Oden. I wish you the best of luck. Its your life and your career. People are gonna express their opinions no matter what. Just do you bro.

Why not try to get into coaching or scouting or something?…..Pays more than being a gym teacher.

if anyone is interested in learning more about what Greg Oden has to say about his career thus far.

  • Lin4President

Theres no problem with wanting to be a gym teacher – but like Cubicle said – if your motivation is to do the easiest thing, you’ve given up.

Teachers make leaders and leaders are teachers and there’s nothing like a teacher who has seen life up front and personal. He would be a great lateral entry teacher. I hope he gets his credentials and he make’s kids enjoy gym/health class and lead our future leaders. America needs more black teachers. I hope he does this.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Shooter McGavin knows what’s up…Portland puts something in the water. Gusisit is right.

  • Jacoobus

Lol he has to pay the bills. He’s made more money for sitting around letting the blazers hope he’ll get healthy than he can make in ten lifetimes as a gym teacher.

  • http://www.stillonthebench.blogspot.com TR

I respect this dude. Life goes on, gotta roll with the punches.

  • http://www.slamonline.com AT

LOL!HE’LL BE TEACHIN THEM ON CRUTCHES

  • Ismael

He might get injured teaching gym class. lol

  • Iforgotmyname-again

At least he’d probably let the kids ball everyday! In middle school we had a more “regimented” gym class – I guess actual physical education. In high school we had the wrestling coach who didn’t give a crap what we did as long as we didn’t kill each other, etc. We balled everyday. At 15, that was far and away my favorite class of the day. Then I got older and started working odd jobs (and some pretty legit ones, I worked at UPS for a while, etc.) and I can honestly say there were a lot of mornings when I wished I was the guy rolling the balls out and talking to the kids about athletics, life, school, etc. It’s about peace of mind to me. UPS pays more than being a gym teacher, but unless you are one of the UPS employees that DON’T wear brown (ie, suit and tie), it doesn’t pay THAT much more than being a gym teacher.

    The jokes are good.

Anyways, the with the jokes aside. I’m glad he has started to think about something else than basketball, because i don’t see him in the Nba anymore. He should look out for D-League and Europe if he still wants to ball.

  • Nick

Why is everyone always talkin about Europe Basketball as the “Nba’s dump”? I dont get it…

  • http://www.slamonline.com flea

Caboose your a fool for that one. SHOOTAH!!

  • Yesse

Nick, never said it was the Nba’s dump. As a matter of fact i’m sure alot of those players are capable of playing in the Nba. Even some, that have never played in the Nba before. Some people just get paid more in the europe as a top player than a bench warmer in the Nba.

  • bdogg

gym teacher??? nice he will be on IR in week one playing kickball with kids…good luck!

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    It could be worse.
Of course, it could be better.
But it could DEFINITELY be worse.

  • 77er

Some of you need to realize that life is not all about money. A teacher is a very honourable profession. Let the man do his thing.

  • hugo

arguably the funniest slam headline ever

  • retrobat

I kinda take issue with the whole “provide for the family” thing. This guy has made more money in 5 years than most people will ever come close to. Why’s he worried about money? I mean, what’s a gym teacher make, $35K, gross? Hope he saved some dough while he’s been rehabbing. Personally, I think I’d be set for life and so would my kids.

  • Cameron

He could play in China with Starbury

  • Dankenstein

    “America needs

  • Dankenstein

“America needs more black teachers.” Why does it make a difference what race the teacher is?

  • MikeC.

Oden is thinking about his future at a fairly young age. That already makes him smarter than most of the free-spending boneheads in the L. He knows that the big paydays are likely over and he has another 60 years to live and he needs a plan. Kudos to the man for being a responsible person. Now that he’s taking the Kenny Powers route, let’s just hope he doesn’t puke ecstasy at a middle-school dance.
