Jalen Rose Doesn’t Like ‘Fab Five’ Nickname for US Gymnasts

Jalen Rose played on the Fab Five squad while attending Michigan, and he doesn’t want any other collection of athletes to borrow the nickname. Rose blames the media — which, as a talking head, he is now a part of — for lazily bestowing the monicker onto the U.S. gymnasts. Per CBS: “Jalen Rose wants it to be very clear: He loves the US Olympic Team. He rooted for them. And he’s a true admirer of Gabby Douglas and her class, composure and athleticism. He’s just not a fan of the team nickname. And he also knows that it was not the five gymnasts who chose it. Rose blames the ‘lazy media’ for not coming up with an original nickname for the gold medalists. [...] ‘To use the nickname just points and screams of lazy journalism by the national media, that’s really what it is,’ Rose said. ‘It’s no fault at all of the young gymnasts. But I really wish they would have come up with an even more creative tag for them and their gold medal pursuit.’ No one’s really sure where the original Fab Five nickname originated, but the players who broke ground with their numbers and their baggy shorts street style on the court, embraced it. ‘Once the media decides what they’re going to call you, that’s your name,’ Rose said. ‘I’ve heard they (gymnasts) wanted to be called ‘Furious Five’ or something different which leads me to believe that’s a tag the media put on them.’”

I agree with Jalen. These girls aren’t doing anything the Michigan Fab Five did. They actually accomplished something, like winning Gold medals and not ruining their school’s reputation by cheating. But the Michigan Fab Five wore baggy shorts, which is cool, I guess.

  • Larry Sportello

Hey Jalen, what was the nickname of the 1948 Kentucky Wildcats NCAA Championship team again?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Let me get this straight. So because the Original Fab Five failed to win a championship (like getting to 2 straight Finals Fours is something to sneeze at), they shouldn’t criticize lazy-a** US media?

  • Fat Lever

This dude’s d@mn near 40 and still hung up on nicknames that were given to him and his teammates 20 years ago. Grow up.

  • miagus23

Websters Dictionary Definition of Jalen Rose:

Jalen Rose- An arrogant and cocky former nobody in the NBA that excuses his wasteful years in the NBA by criticizing athletes and teams because of their race, ethnicity, social and economic stablity, and skill.

  • satchow

JTaylor21: I just looked at the NCAA record books and saw no mention of the Michigan team making the Final Four.

  • dc23

People should really take the time to read/listen to the source before criticizing on this board. Jalen doesnt seem hung up at all, just wishes media is more creative when giving nicknames to athletes. He handles it pretty well if you tell me. It’s not like Shaq and the Superman moniker he gave himself.

  • Oh Nose

@satchow you forgot their black socks!

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance

Satchow must really be Bill Walton.

  • miagus23

@JTaylor21 thats because their titles were stripped away from them because of receiving money and benefits from a college booster. If you want watch a movie called “The Fab Five” on Espn’s 30 for 30. Its about the Michigan Fab Five and their like glory days…

  • miagus23

lol my fault i meant @satchow

  • Da-Meat-Hook

@ satchow, are you really questioning what the Fab5 contributed to basketball?! If all you could internalize after watching them play is the fact that they wore baggy shorts, then you clearly missed the point.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Sure, the same way the NCAA tells us that Memphis and Coach Cal never went to the Final Four despite the fact that everyone saw Memphis come within a couple of seconds of winning the championship. Same with Reggie Bush and his heisman.

obviously love the Fab 5ive; but JRose needs to chill out..what the big deal? Don’t worry Jalen, we’ll always remember the original Fab 5ive..nobody will be talkin bout those gymnasts in a year or two..let them enjoy their 15mins of fame, dude…

  • clydesays

You’d think Jalen would be honored to be mentioned with a bunch of Gold Medal WINNERS. I bet Chris Webber is… /snare shot

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Jalen has a point but he also comes off as very salty though

  • ThaWindy

How bout..the wonderful five? The super five? Jumping jack five?

  • fwilliams

On his twitter & latest podcast he wasnt upset at all. Same with this article but media has to read way too much into this and always trying to start crap.

  • ThaWindy

The naggIng five…wait that’s the view

  • NRB

Nah Jalen. They gymnastics are champions and earned the Fab part of their nickname. How many did you guys win in Michigan during your time there?

  • davidR

you guys should read what he said. he has a problem with the media, not the actual nickname or the team

  • miagus23

He mentions rooting for Gabby more than having a problem with the team name. This guys comments always show a bit of racism…

  • bdogg

kinda agree with jalen…get a nickname without piggybacking! they deserve a name in their own right for their accomplishment!

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Wow, I’m sure the list of Jalen Rose’s “likes” and “dislikes” are high on everybody’s list. The original Fab Five are the Paris Hilton of college basketball – famous for being famous.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Im gonna have to holla at Gabby Douglas in about 2 years.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

After months of consideration, I have come to realize that I am the wackest poster on here. I wish that I had a job so I didn’t have to sit on my computer all day and post my thoughts to a website of a magazine that came out cool and groundbreaking but soled out to the people that it completely dissed back in the day. Man I am wack!!!

    Jtaylor finally with some truf

  • Bwill32

the beatles were the fab 4 WAY before the michigan team was even born… and adding 1 to that isn’t lazy?

  • Heals

Amen Jalen! For it has less to do with accomplishments than it does originality and respect for those that came first. Just like there is only 1 LT, Lawerence effin’ Taylor…

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Nah Heals I feel that LaDanian Tomlinson deserves to be called LT as well

  • bike

Anyone else not on that Michigan team saying something like this is OK but Jalen is coming off sounding rather petty here. Halfway wish Gabby would come back saying she agrees with with Jalen and saying she would rather not be compared to that over-hyped team at all.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

If you know JT well enough, you know 1.02pm is not him.
    .
Is it impossible for the media to come up with any other nickname for a collection of 5 players/athletes? But of course, Jalen shouldn’t have an opinion because the record books say that MI team never reached the Final Four. Why is it that to lots of folks here on SLAM, a player has to be a champion before he earns the right to have any opinion.

  • LA Huey

Steve McQueen had beef with the media’s title for the ’96 gymnasts.

  • Heals

How about once KG and RayRay came to Bos they were called the “Big 3″ without anyone even blinking an eye!?!? Then it started trickling to LAL, and OKC and Mia and so on and so on. Now it’s every team has a “Big 3.” Just laziness, that ultimately comes off as disrepsect in many cases. I know they’re just nicknames, but most of the ones being discussed also have greater symbolism beyond just what the player/team did in their respective arenas…

  • http://www.slamonline.com YoYoYo

    Fallopian Five??

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Do some of you guys even read the article? Or do you just read the title?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    read an article? how?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Chinese Oppenheimer

Rose and the rest of the Michigan freshmen WERE NOT the first group of athletes to be call the Fab Five. The name didn’t originate with them. Why don’t you guys go read a book or learn something about sports history before making these dumb comments.

  • Paul

He MAY have a point if his team’s nickname weren’t derived from a nickname of the Beatles. Who remembers the FAB FOUR?

  • SeanMagicJuan

Tell us Chinese Oppenheimer. Who were the first group of athletes called the “Fab Five_
    ?

I’m sure Jalen Rose meant no harm. Maybe a little insecure? Remember the other ‘Big 3′ in Houston…Barkley, Olajuwon, Drexler. We seem to have forgotten about that…after the Big 3 on the Celtics actually lived up to the hype and WON! Time marches on…Jalen’s just probably trying to hang on…
