Jay-Z Reportedly Convinced the NBA to Allow the Nets’ Black-and-White Color Scheme

There’s an interesting feature in today’s NY Times about Jay-Z’s influence over the Brooklyn Nets (you should probably go check out the whole thing), but one piece of information that stood out was that the NBA, according to the writer’s sources, wasn’t going to approve of the Brooklyn Nets’ new black-and-white jerseys—until Hov stepped up and changed their minds. More details: “Now, with the long-delayed Barclays Center arena nearing opening night in September and the Nets bidding in earnest for Brooklyn’s loyalties, Jay-Z will perform eight sold-out shows to kick things off. But away from center stage he has put his mark on almost every facet of the enterprise, his partners say. He helped design the team logos and choose the team’s stark black-and-white color scheme, and personally appealed to National Basketball Association officials to drop their objections to it (the N.B.A., according to a person with knowledge of the discussion, thought that African-American athletes did not look good on TV in black, an assertion that a league spokesman adamantly denied). He counseled arena executives on what kind of music to play during games. (‘Less Jersey,’ he urged, pushing niche artists like Santigold over old favorites like Bon Jovi.) He even coached them on how to screen patrons for weapons without appearing too heavy-handed. (‘Be mindful,’ he advised oracularly, ‘and be sensitive.’) In the two and a half years since groundbreaking, as taxi-roof advertisements promised ‘All access to Jay-Z,’ and sponsorship salespeople trumpeted how “hip and cool” he and his wife, Beyoncé, would make the arena, he and the Nets have effectively written a new playbook for how to deploy a strategic celebrity investor.”

    Oracularly? Really?

  • wixurss

I like what he did with NBA2k13 and this rap/rock festival coming up so i’m sure the Nets will be smartly run too.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Man, when you read that article, Jay Z is about his money. He invested $1 million in dough, added some “sweat equity” and not he’s leveraging that to promote all the other businesses he’s involved in which only increases his value to them. As many problems as I have with excess wealth, I do respect how well he learned the game despite having none of the early advantages.

  • wixurss

I never knew the NBA was so anti-black jersey. What about the Spurs?? And isn’t Iverson in the black jersey one of the coolest jerseys ever?

  • LA Huey

“As many problems as I have with excess wealth, I do respect how well he learned the game despite having none of the early advantages.” co-sign

  • fruizm

I dont have any problems with excess wealth…but I also co-sign!

  • CubicleWorker

But if it’s a white man who comes from nothing and creates a mega-fortune and say.. buys an NBA franchise and uses that to promote his other businesses you have a problem with that right?

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danpowers

lol “thought that African-American athletes did not look good on TV in black”

  • LA Huey

Cubicle, I have a problem if Jay-Z is crying about how much he’s losing with his NBA team when it’s clear he’s been able to use his very slim ownership in the team and arena (.3% of Barclays Arena and .06% of the Nets) to boost his profits in his other ventures.

  • LA Huey

wixurrs, aside from the soundtrack have they revealed where his fingerprints are on the game?

  • Matisse

I have to hand it to Jay-Z the man has a great talent for negotiation. From convince the slippery Charles Barkely to join 2k and now this? The man has the gift of gab.

  • Unclelukenc

African-American athletes? How many people in the NBA are African? You mean black dudes? In all honesty, and I played ball for a long time (so you know I met some dudes from Senegal, ha), I have only met probably 10 people in my life who have ever BEEN to Africa, half of them are white and the others half are from there. I can honestly say that I have never met a black guy that was born in America that has ever even been to Africa.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Cubicle Owner
What are you talking about? That’s asinine. When have I expressed that sentiment? For someone who claims to be unconcerned with race, you sure do interject it into a lot of your comments buddy.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Unclelukenc
You need to expand your circle of black people.

  • LA Huey

Unclelukenc has no idea what he’s talking about.

  • Ldub

Uncleluke….please tell me youre joking with your comment. If you really think any executive is dumb enough to say “black dudes” in an organization youre completely crazy, high or in the words of zack galifianakis..”a ruhtard”! I shouldnt have to explain that “African-American” is the politically correct term, that also goes hand in glove with caucasian which defines your “white dudes”.

  • Shecky Shabazz

Flexing that illuminati muscle huh jay?

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Im still honestly trying to figure out what the hell Unclelukenc is talking about. You need more black friends bruh

  • Unclelukenc

You guys are a politician’s dream! I love it. So sensitive, which is what is wrong with much of the world today. Everybody is so offended at everything. God forbid somebody say “black” to describe a black person. Or “white” to describe a white person. Or “gay” to describe a gay person. Older heads (Muhammad Ali, George Carlin, Redd Foxx, Pryor, etc.) got it. Its all a joke that small-minded people use to fuss and whine over. We are only here for a short time, and you are gonna get offended cause somebody says “black” to describe black people when every other word out of most black peoples’ mouths is a word that their ancestors’ fought for years (like, centuries) to disassociate themselves from? Good job. What happened to all of the great black inventors, scientists, engineers, social leaders? Gone. All that fighting so you could sag your pants, buy spinning rims and dismiss college as a negative thing on the path to some loot? Jokes on you. And most of us. Same goes for white people, asian, hispanic, etc. It’s just a smokescreen. Like Obama and Bush and Romney and Clinton. Educate yourself. Stop bickering over something that your “owners” (Bildebergs, Rothschilds, Goldman Sachs, etc.), promote to keep you down. There is nobody as blind as he who just won’t see.

As the great Paul Mooney once said when it’s all said and done niggas…niggas are everywhere. Just kidding but Uncleluke you need to expand your circle buddy. Also why do some people have a problem when black people born in America don’t visit Africa? We weren’t born there so I personally don’t feel the obligation to do so.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

    Um…………..ok

  • http://www.slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

It is true, colored folk look mighty horrid in black cloothes.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Yes because all black people sag, dismiss higher education, or live outside of there means? That sounds reasonable.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

It’s funny that whenever a person of color (especially blacks) becomes wealthy everyone thinks the Illuminati or some secret society was involved in one way or another but whenever a caucasian becomes wealthy it’s through hard work and determination.

  • Ldub

If you are going to use certain words to describe an entire race, then you should really consider the feelings (sensitive or not) for “some” of those people. Some people dont give a damn whether you say white, black, gay, bi, orange, purple, fat or small. But some do. Dont be so ignorant that you cant actually understand that not every black/african american person wishes to be known as black or african american. You dont know what someone went through as to why they have such a “sensitive” outlook on certain aspects of life. And who are you to judge that? Right, wrong or indifferent, people have the right to have their own feelings/opinions on any topic. In the same breathe, we have to respect those feelings and opinions for many reasons, but the most important being, its that persons right to choose how they would like to be “announced” (for lack of better terms). Not every David wants to be called Dave! So feel free, to educate your damn self.

  • Ldub

Luke u sound extremely racist kid! Sure u feel like ur sharing some interesting points but ur not. Truth be told, many PEOPLE not just black people can’t afford college. So they do what they can to make ends meet. You seem to be focused on the “jay-z” model to wrap ur thoughts around what a successful black person must do to gain wealth. On the contrary there are many PEOPLE that didn’t attent college simply because they couldn’t afford it. And no matter your response, not everyone qualifies for. Grants or loans. Don’t put the lack of education on an entire race because every race has its highs and lows. And its not based on “opportunity” because in all honesty, no kid from the projects (black or white) will be president…regardless of their “education”!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Chinese Oppenheimer

Uncleluke, Newflash: the world is still spinning despite your meaningless objections about what people should and should not call themselves. No one cares about your feelings on their fashion. No one cares if your circle is so small that you’ve never met a black man who travelled. That says more about you than anything. I don’t even care to argue your silly points because I honestly don’t care how you feel or why you feel that way. The bottom line is that with all you’ve typed, all you’ve managed to do is get clowned by the reality that your just another dude with an opinion valued only by himself.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Yeah and stop hating and get money……………..LMAO

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danpowers

wouldve been funnier if they wouldve said “brothers is lookin whack in black” lol

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Uncleluke just came on here and dropped knowledge to a bunch of people who don’t want to listen. He won guys. You all just proved his point. And this is not JTaylor21 I don’t know why his name pops up on my screen even when I erase it it still shows up as that. *Just in case it happens* Sorry JTaylor21, not sure how to fix it. Computer been acting funny lately

  • http://www.slamonline.com Chinese Oppenheimer

BTW, anyone who argues against a person’s objections to the use of slang terms to describe their race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation is too stupid to converse with. There are a lot of problems in this world, but if you think “sensitivity” is one of them then you need to be slapped.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

@Ldub -saying things like “kid” and “u” and “ur” , especially after throwing around the most ignorant of all terms, racist, is exactly what dude was talking about. I doubt luke feels that way about every single person he/she meets (I am assuming he since the name is “Uncle” luke), but overall you played right into his hands. My old roommate was from Ghana, and he used to get all fired up at the term African-American when it was just used to describe an American black person.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I hate when arguments on SLAM dissolve into soap box yelling about race. Does anybody really think they’ll change anyone’s mind over the Internet on a basketball site? On another note, I’m kinda surprised how much pull Jay-Z has with the Nets despite a very small ownership percentage. Props to that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Chinese Oppenheimer

Racist is an ignorant term, but not a racial slurs. Says the dude who can’t even clear his cache. And who cares what your roommate feels? He knows no more about American history than Americans do about Ghanian history. Africans aren’t the gate keepers of politically correct ethnic labels. No group is. You can’t tell people what they should and shouldn’t call themselves, nor can you tell them how to feel about any particular labels. Get over it.

  • http://bulls.com airs

    So…jay-z huh? What a RIOT

  • Allenp

Be insensitive there is going on a rant about the problems of black people on a basketball website

  • White guy

    Ldub:
Trust me, you should feel very comfortable, and not politically incorrect to refer to a white person as a “white person”. On a few occasions someone has used the word caucasion in my presence, clearly meaning well & just hoping not to offened. But “white person” or “white guy” is just fine and definetly preferred. Now “white-boy”, well that’s another story(lol). Enjoy your day

    Peace

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

@cubicle but white folks haven’t struggled as black folks have, matter fact throughout history whites have been the predominate oppressors. Don’t start that junk dude, heck this year in itself has seen an alarming, shocking, and appalling rise in oppression. The other day, a cop ran over a little girl and shot her father when he came at him. He was black, cop was white. Get a grip, racism ain’t dead it’s rising. Mosques have been shot up at alarming rates also all over the USA.

  • Ldub

JT….had I been on my computer…you would have seen the you, your and you’re. Trust that I understand the difference. But while at work, its much easier to post in a text style format. But I get what “you’re” saying! I’m not upset with what was said or how it was said. I really could care less what people call me, because I know what and who I am. But not everyone has the same mindset that I do. So being sensitive to others should be something we all strive to do.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

WTF. Stern is losing it. Wow. This is a fu*king joke

  • O

Racism will never die, plain and simple. “Arabs” are terrorists, “mexican” immigrants (all Latinos are Mexicans to Republicans and racists) are stealing all the jobs in the US, “African-Americans” are responsible for all the crimes in every neighborhood, Jeremy Lin can’t play basketball – things will never change. Imagine how much worse things would get should a Romney/Ryan team take office next year…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Redd
The way I saw the story, the girl darted out into traffic, got hit, and then the cop was trying to save her. The father came out of a restaurant, was irate, started wailing on the cop, and then got shot. Don’t know what happened, but if that is what happened, then it changes the narrative.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

*yawn*…tell me when the ignorant bullsh*t is done for the day…

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

O, why would Romney/Ryan or whoever ticket, change anything race wise in America?
Has racism ceased or decreased since Obama took office?
I don’t see the connection between who is president and how racist people choose to be.
    .
Please everyone, do me this one favor, it’s a small one. Vote for anyone other than the main two tickets.
I’m kidding it’s not for me. It’s for you. Time for some real “change”.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Yeah, the president (no matter which ticket you vote) isn’t going to change that ish…It goes way too deep.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

@Allenp really? Excuse my ignorance, I’ll research into it. But it definitely does, but doesn’t erase the other heinous acts of ignorance though.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think presidents have the power to change things as far as racism and discrimination on a macro level. They can set policies, enforce existing rules and set good examples.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Like stop dropping bombs on innocents, help a modern genocide in Burma, stop the s**t in Palestine, etc. just an idea, I’m not a fan of neither elects.

  • spurs4life

He convince Charles Barkley to be apart of the NBA 2k13 92 “Dream Team”. So I knew this was a piece of cake compare to this situation.

  • O

My bad Lakeshow, I shouldve been a little clearer about what I said. Romney isnt too fond of Latinos. It would be bad for us should he be elected. Thats what I meant.
