Jermaine O’Neal, Suns Agree To 1-Year Contract

O’Neal, who went to Germany this March to receive the knee procedure Kobe Bryant and Grant Hill had in the past, has agreed to terms to join the Suns, according to the Arizona Republic. JO was hoping to land with the Lakers, but Friday’s Dwight Howard trade put an end to that: “In the shadow cast by Superman’s arrival in Los Angeles, the timing of Jermaine O’Neal’s choice to commit to the Suns on Friday was unfortunate as an unrelated move. Given the caliber of remaining NBA free-agent centers, O’Neal’s commitment to sign a one-year, $1.35 million contract with Phoenix could be fortuitous if — and it’s a huge if — O’Neal can be healthier than he has been for the later half of his 16-year career. The Suns had only a backup center role and a one-year, veteran’s minimum contract to offer with a franchise that is in transition.”

That’s great for Jermaine, hope that the medical staff can work their magic on him.

I like him, but he’s done. The wrist, both knees… and that’s just the recent stuff. If they want someone who won’t take charges, wants to be a significant part of the offense, probably won’t give you much for rebounding. Basically set picks and clog the lane when smaller guys try to drive to the hoop. I recall a game against Miami when Lebron drove on him. JO clearly had position, but knew he was gonna have to take a charge., or get the foul called on him anyway. Instead of falling on his already injured wrists, he threw a shoulder at Lebron, which ticked off Lebron off enough to throw the ball at JO (JO gave that stone cold face to him… which was pretty aweseome). IN retrospect… I know exactly why he did it. He was tired of getting hurt. Can’t blame him, but is that worth 1.35 Mil?? If you are big, I guess it does.
