Magic Johnson Wants Lakers Coach Mike Brown ‘to do a Better Job’

Though no longer directly involved in team business, Magic Johnson is still listed as an executive with the Lakers, and he continues to publicly apply the pressure to head coach Mike Brown. Per the LA Times: “I’m really not tough on Mike Brown,’ Magic said. ‘I just want Mike to do a better job. I like Mike Brown. I thought the defense since Mike came here has improved. But I don’t like a 7-footer out on the perimeter when we have the advantage down low. I have to point that out. And the Lakers don’t lose in the first round; that’s not who we are.’ [...] “I think Andrew Bynum is not going to reach his potential,’ Magic continued. ‘What I’m saying is Bynum has to take the next step,’ Magic said. ‘If he takes the next step, he should stay. He will be a dominant center. But he hasn’t done it yet.’ Magic said the Lakers still need an outside shooter to be championship-worthy. He said recently Jim Buss did a good job in rebuilding, and would call it a great job if he added Dwight Howard. ‘Dwight is better than Bynum,’ he said. ‘Everybody knows that. I want what’s best for the organization. Dwight would be amazing with Steve Nash and Kobe. Finally Kobe will have a chance to rest on offense’”

Is Magic trying to make someone else disappear? He has a history if getting coaches fired and players traded who do not kow tow to him.

  • Mike

Hey Magic already did and will do better tha you did as the Laker coach. You want him to get better as a coach…. I want you to get better as a late night tv show host!

Doesn’t sound like Magic is in favor of the Princeton offense idea.

  • chris g

The magic man is right. La has an edge in the low post over other teams, exploit that. Magic knows hoops, not his fault most of the Lakers he coached didn’t listen. Keep it up Magic, u just want LA to win, ignore the haters, & Go Lakers! !

Mike is right. Magic has no room to talk.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Magic acts like he was a stellar coach in his own right.

  • OTB

Magic Johnson is the king of generic and reactive statements that have no base or analysis behind them. As great of a player as he was, he is just as big of a dumb*** when it comes to analysis and saying things beyond the obvious.

Co-sign ctk, front office needs to do a better job…..and they have but they still need more athleticism.

  • Drig

Keeping aside whether Magic has the right to comment on other’s coaching skills, he’s got a point. Pau should’ve been used better. Also, his subs used to drive me crazy at times. However, it was a lockout season and pride was ( unfortunately ) at stake which made it a priority to finish above the Clips….which forced him to ride Pau and Kobe hard and not let Ebanks, Goudelock develop……which ultimately killed us in the end as we had zero bench like the last 3+ years…..Expecting better things…

LOL @ JTaylor…. Mike Brown isnt a very good coach Defensive minded he is solid but when it comes to Xs and Os and adjustments he is one of the WORST I’m not too familiar with how things unfolded in CLE but as the coach he should grew some balls and either make lebron get in the post or push the tempo instead of asking big Z to be a reliable scorer.. Then when he gets to LA he comes in with a brand new offense that had the LAKERS lookin Terrible before he finally went back to the only offense KOBE and those trees know is the triangle… the LAkers should just get rid of Brown

@OTB The Shock Exchange begs to differ. Magic is smoking that “Paul Brown” … brilliant move on his part. WR Bobby Mitchell said that whenever he and Jim Brown got into trouble (missing curfew for instance), Cleveland coach Paul Brown would yell at Mitchell. While looking at Mitchell, his comments were actually directed at the team leader – Jim Brown. While Magic refers to Mike Brown and Bynum, his comments are clearly directed at Horry Jr, i.e. “Quit chucking and get the rock to Pau Gasol / Andrew Bynum at the same ____ time.” He has simultaneously given Brown an “olive branch” (M&A parlance) to run the offense through the bigs and bench anyone, Horry Jr included, who doesn’t want to comply.

I agree w/ Magic on this one. Mike Brown is wack.

  • laker4life

Earvin knows basketball, knows the game deeper than anyone commenting. Ultimate team player with a will to win that makes him the greatest point guard of all time. Just listen to him fellas. Peace.

  • LA Huey

I like listening to Magic recap game highlights. He stumbles so hard it’s basically a professional version of “Boom goes the dynamite”.

  • T-Money

you have 3 guys who want to go on the block in kobe, pau and bynum. something’s gotta give, and last year bynum leapfrogged pau. the reality is that pau is a center at this stage of his career. he looks foolish chasing guys like ryan anderson and josh smith all over the court.

This is the equivalent of Kobe telling Westbrook to pass more. Yeah, he’s right, but he’s not exactly the shining example…

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Isn’t magic still part of the management or something? Won’t this create controversy?

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Black Mamba, You have to look at who has the most to gain from Magic’s comments – Mike Brown and the owner, Jerry Buss. Brown needs the political capital to go at Horry Jr if he balks about the team’s strategy of pounding the ball into Pau Gasol / Andrew Bynum at the same ____ time. The fans will side with Magic, and with them behind Brown, he will have the political capital and backbone to reign in Horry Jr. Buss wants to win. Running the offense through the bigs is the road to the ‘chip. That said, the Shock Exchange is 100% certain that Buss and Magic discussed this prior to Magic going public – it gets the results Buss wants and keeps Buss’ relationship with Horry Jr intact.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Co-sign Huey, I love watching Magic take 5 minutes to put together 3 coherent sentences, all the while throwing in untimely bursts of enthsiasm to keep the fans guessing.

  • JL

Kuester the fired pistons coach was the one drawing up offensive plays at every timeout. It’s embarrassing. Never even knew he was some kind of offensive genius.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

I get it now. Thanks. Horry jr is Kobe right? If so, that’s messed up

  • Loyola

I want Mike Brown gets fired. Put Jerry Sloan, Obradovic…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

LA Huey, good point but if the 80s Celtics with Parish/McHale/Bird found a way to make it work, the Lakers with Bynum/Gasol/Bryant have no excuse. I know it’s not the best of examples given just how talented and skilled Bird/McHale were but PJax did a good job of keeping all 3 involved (when Bynum was healthy).

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

The cawk exchange gets sexually excited when magic goofily stumbles through highlights as if he were fresh out the dentist, like david. What is obvious is not profound, but does turn me on.

  • LA Huey

JT, I’m assuming that was meant for T-Money

  • Red Star

If Howard was traded to the Lakers Kobe would take 30 shots a game. Damn, he has already done that as is with a torn ligament in his hand to boot! Kobe would take at least 40 shots a game if Howard were traded to the Lakers! Mind you now that Nash is on the team and he doesn’t have to worry about getting other players involved he’ll probably take 40 shots a game just because!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Fact^

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Lakers biggest problem wasn’t coaching. They had absolutely nothing coming off the bench. Hopefully, Antawn Jamison will be a good addition.

  • LA Huey

    LOL, co-sign LakeShow.

  • robb

I don’t think he can make a better job.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    THANK YOU MAGIC, THANK YOU

  • Roscoe

I don’t like saying this, but everytime Magic speaks he is putting the Dodgers in the spotlight which is where all his money is now located.

God Bless Magic, but he sold his share of ownership in the Lakers & all his starbucks shops to buy into the Dodgers ownnership and Magic is working the media as he knows how to best to benefit his investments, ie Dodgers. I don’t blame him… he is really smart and an amazing person.

With that in mind… Don’t believe Magic’s sole intention is for the Lakers benefit. Albeit putting a fire under Mike Brown so he can withstand the media grind this coming season and work harder to meet expectations is a good move on Magic’s part.

The Lakers problems are Bynum’s knee/inconsistency, lack of quality outstide shooting & the bench’s lack of scoring.

Jamison will help… Jordan’s signing is very good… Nash is money… but the back up Point Guard is who? Huh? Who?

Oh, by the way, if PJAX does not come back, Jerry Sloan is just what the doctor ordered.

  • Roscoe

    Jerry Sloan please.

  • Mike From Spain

If the LAkers don’t run their offense through the bigs, the problem is not Mike Brown, the problem is Kobe. Why is Magic calling out Mike Brown? No idea.

  • James

Magic, smartest player I ever seen play. Mike Brown does need to step it up on the offensive end of coaching. We’ll see how this princeton offense works out. Magic just wants to see the Lakers win, Jerry Buss has done a good job this off season with signing nash & jamison. Now a great job, a good job.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Mike from Spain. Your typically intelligent, but that’s just stupid. If Brown doesn’t like it when Kobe jacks up a shot he can pull him out. Right? Thought so.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Last season if Brown had pulled Horry Jr after jacking up a shot, his next sighting would have been in one of the vacants down in B-More.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Who?

  • Roscoe

Shock Exchange enjoys referring to KB24 as Horry Jr., bc like Robert Horry, KB24 shoots the ball a lot…

I am not taking sides… just explaining SE’s slang.

  • ClydeSays

Dunno if Sloan is the best coach for Kobe & esp. Nash. Sloan supposedly rules with an iron fist & sits players if they consistently miss defensive rotations. So where would that leave Nash? On the bench, collecting checks? If I’m Magic, I talk to my employee (He’s still an owner, right?) behind closed doors, not in a public forum.
