Magic Rejected Nets’ Final Offer of Lopez, Humphries, Brooks and Four Picks

The Dwight Howard saga is officially over! Basketball fans everywhere can now exhale, at least for a brief second. We already saw how fellow NBAers reacted to the blockbuster deal, and this morning analysts and pundits everywhere are dissecting the trade from all angles, including how Orlando faired in comparison to other packages the Magic had at their disposal. According to Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Magic rejected the Brooklyn Nets’ final offer of Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and four unprotected first-round picks in exchange for Howard, Jason Richardson, Chris Duhon and Earl Clark. Was it smart of Rob Hennigan and Co. to pass on that offer? Hmm, only time will tell.

Hindsight is 20/20 but prolly should have took this deal…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The only explanation I can come up with why the Magic would turn down a better deal for the crap they got from the Lakers/Nuggets is not wanting Howard to turn another EC team into a powerhouse.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

^or taking on lopezs max contract

  • Alford

Clearly the best offer. Magic GM is stupid.

  • tavoris

They should have taken this offer. Brooks alone >afflalo

  • Gemini

The Rookie GM got taken out to the Cleaners.

  • KC

I’m not one for conspiracy theories but how do these teams constantly send their top talent to the lakers? It has happened time and time again through History. With that said, Billy King is a horrible G.M and i’m not sure how he has another job after running my Sixers into the ground for years. Makes sense that he would pass on the better offer to bring in an overrated and over paid player like Joe johnson.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Billy King isn’t that bad. He did the best he could in Philly. I was/am a huge Iverson fan but I can admit that it was hard to bring guys in to play with him unless they were defenders or rebounders. He wasn’t the best at sharing the ball at times. Billy’s done a good job in NJ/Brooklyn. He played a part in Deron Williams returning. Joe Johnson is overpaid but he’s never played with anyone remotely close to Deron Williams. He may start earning some of the money he’s getting. Orlando held Dwight hostage and agreed to this terrible deal, for what? Dwight wins, Stan Van Gundy wins because he doesn’t have to coach that terrible team, all the other teams in this trade wins. Orlando is stuck hoping that they can get a franchise guy in the draft.

  • Vic

All you people who think the Nets deal was better are crazy. U think paying a max contract to a center who doesnt rebound and is injury prone, along with an overrated Guard and KH and some picks in the low 20′s is worth it? What are you all smoking?

Sure this deal isn’t a Melo or Paul deal, but it works in our Cavour clearing cap room for next and following years. Afflalo is a top 10 SG, Vucevic is a solid backup, HArrington has a friendly contract next year. Got a nice rookie from Philly and picks (better than Nets picks) and we cleared all bad contracts!!

  • startown

Yea I would have taken the other deal, probably make the playoffs with the Nets players

  • http://www.dimemag.com showtime

Rook gm is a joke, he got took way better offers on the table ,like this 1 or the Rockets, its just head scratchin u dont even take bynun???

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Just like grizz took a shtty deal for pau, when chi had a better offer.
    Black helicopters

  • pposse

im compelled to send hate mail to the magic front office.

  • ALD

@vic.. lopez got injured once and he’s injury prone.. lol

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

In July Lopez didn’t have a max contract. Him getting a max contract is what prevented him from being traded.
I hate when people make factually incorrect comments to support stupid rationalizations.
The Magic took a worse deal to spite Dwight. Period.

  • pposse

this is the type of stuff that make me feel like i can march straight up to the magic front office and demand a job as the GM

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2011/10/nfl-players-advice-to-lebron-james-stick-to-basketball/ shutup

cosign Tarzan. ROTFL at the “Black Helicopters”. That Pau deal still amazes me to this day. How do the Lakers pull off trades that if you tried to do them in a video game would be denied outright?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Allen: in that case they should/would have traded him to the Rockets.

  • P

John Hollinger @johnhollinger “Go easy on Hennigan. Hearing Orl Pres Alex Martins likely ran this one. Always good to have non-bball folks make critical decision.”

  • LA Huey

I guess y’all don’t see Aaron Afflalo for the impending superstar he is…much like I don’t.

  • CubicleWorker

First time I agree with AllenP on literally anything. Get your facts straight kids. Also, Vic how do you think these pics are better than NJ’s picks? Every team in this trade is a playoff team and they could arguably all be top ten teams. I can’t believe it took the Magic a year to get a deal this bad

  • NetsRTakingOver

How is Billy King a terrible GM, that trade made D-Will resign @ByAnyMeansNecessary, and then resigned Wallace, Humphries and Lopez.

  • bike

Orlando simply wanted Dwight gone. Just shows the power that a top tier franchise player has.

  • pposse

i seriously would have had dwight dress up every day for 2013 and sit at the end of the bench in orlando for the whole season and just let him walk in the summer. The magic already got nothing for him, they should have taken away a whole year from his career, thats how you spite somebody.

  • LA Huey

How long until the Magic realize that they forgot to unload Hedo/BigBaby’s contract in the deal?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Someone just said that Arron F*cking Affalo is a Top-10 SG. May the Lord have mercy on all those that read such a stupid statement.

  • LA Huey

  • miagus23

@vic man bro that argument was so bad you should just receive a ban from slamonline. LMAO aaron aflalo a top 10 sg lol that dude wouldnt be a top 10 sg in the wnba!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Honestly, the Magic did NOTHING good in this trade. They took on an overpaid Affalo to pair with an overpaid Jameer, Big Baby and Hedo.
Sure, they dumped JRich, but he was actually productive and EXPIRING soon.
It’s mindboggling. It’s ridiculously stupid and can only be explained through spite.
Brook Lopez, Hump and picks was an infinitely better deal. The crap Houston offered was a better deal. If the League know this was all it took to get Dwight Howard EVERYONE would have bid!

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

My forehead is getting sore from all the face palms today…

  • CubicleWorker

Allenp on point again! The four way deal that included Cleveland had them getting rich of both richardsons and turkoglu. I thought it was a given that any deal got rid of at least 2 of those 3 players. On the plus side, maybe the Raptors will have competition at the bottom of the east this seasonl

  • http://Bleacherreport Bluestarrr

The Lakers will gell with Kobe, Howard and nash not even thinking about Gasol, WOW look out Heat.

  • http://Bleacherreport Bluestarrr

The deal with Cleveland was a better deal, with that deal the Magic made Cleveland should have dealt there hand for Howard.

  • LA Huey

Allenp, agreed. I seriously had to read the details FIVE times to make sure I had it right. Totally looks like a deal an 8-year old makes with the handicapped AI.

  • http://sandsof.com SANDSof

Thought Houston had the best offer on the table: Jeremy Lamb, Royce White, Terrence Jones and anyone else that the Magic could have wanted and Daryl Morey would have taken on those bad contracts. Plus, if Dwight Howard decided to sign with another team rest assured that the Rockets would be in the draft lottery for many years, hence higher draft picks to the Magic and a better chance to obtain that ‘franchise’ player which is GM’s Rob Hennigans MO (replicating OKC’s successful blueprint). Lastly it would have sent D12 to the western conference.

Which in turn brings us to Brooklyn’s offer, just speculating it seems fitting that the Magic did not want to grant Howard’s wishes (‘spiting’) which then in return defines the Orlando franchise – great corporations make business decisions not personal decisions. And if that truly was the mind set, good luck to CEO Alex Martin and his Magic kingdom.

  • ALD

vic made some crazy statements but afalo is no scrub@miagus23. he can put the ball on the floor , shoot and defend.. Might become most improved player next year if he plays the same.

  • LA Huey

    Sandsof makes a good point.

  • Ill Smith

Like I’ve said 100 times on here the Hawks had the best deal on the table (Horford, Teague, picks, expiring contracts). Hell even Houston had a great deal for em (couple lottery picks from this year, Toronto’s from next year, expiring contracts & willingness to take those awful deals). Orlando did NOTHING correct with this trade. Did they get any potential AllStars? Did they clear cap space & dump one of their many shi*ty contracts? Did they even get a potential top TWENTY pick?!? I feel like I need a legit explanation from their GM, I’m trying my best to find some type of light in this move but it’s looking real bleak for Orlando.

  • Ses

Hilariously True @SHUTUP! This deal makes no sense not on a 2K level! And for all you to say its out of spite, think again! You send Him to play with a title contender and your tam may not even make the playoffs! lol Who are they spiting, themselves?!

  • Ses

Nash, Kobe, MWP, Gasol, Howard (and supporting cast) VS. Nelson, Affalo, Hedo, Big Baby and C(???)…. Yeah the Magic really spited Howard! LMAO

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I don’t have a problem with the Houston deal. Honestly, every other deal was better than this one. Even the FIRST Lakers deal that was on the table.
I am pissed. I don’t want Kobe to win ring number 6 and I feel like he has a GREAT chance now. Plus, I wanted Brooklyn to challenge Miami in the East. Now that ain’t happening.
    So ridiculous.

  • pposse

is there any chance dwight douchebag leaves LA next summer and try and sign with BK?

  • RunNGun

Wow… I would have taken this deal. Rebuilding would come along faster.

  • JL

Stern should have taken over the Magic before this happened. That would have been awesome.

Are we all missing something that the Magic front office sees? At least the Grizz got Marc Gasol. The Magic? uh… Aflalo? Moe Harkless who is projected to be best case Trevor Ariza? So their starting five is J Nelson PG, Afflalo SG, Hedo SF, Big Baby PF, and Center… Vujecic? Holy crap they must really like the first pick in the next draft! And all those picks in the low 20′s they’ll be receiving. Great way to start over, but come on can’t they just trade DH for some higher draft pick? Something at least in the lottery? At least increase your ping pong ball chances!

  • Harry

Wow this Hennigan tool really got taken to the cleaners! Magic are gonna suck for quite a long time

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

I think the issue with the NJ deal is that it wouldn’t have changed anything for the Magic. They would have still been a playoff team in the East withut a legit chance to win a championship. They wouldn’t have had any lottery picks coming and would have ‘had’ to offer Lopez a significant contract that would have tied up cap space and not allowed them to really attract free agents. At least with this deal they will be a horrible team (and thus make the lottery), have cap space, have a lot of young talent, won’t have any pressure to re-sign veterans coming in etc. You can argue that by getting significantly worse in the near future with this trade, can help them be a better team long-term than if they would have taken on stronger assets from NJ. A perpetual playoff team without hope of winning a championship or really improving is the worst spot for a team to be in. This purge was necessary.

  • Allenp

They could have traded Lopez to Bobcats.

  • RunNGun

I hate to say it but this Hennigan tool makes David Kahn look smart.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Chinese Oppenheimer

The league blocked the CP3 deal because they were gearing up for Dwight to be gifted over to the Lakers. This is bs.

  • DavidL

For all y’all hatin on this trade cuz Nets offer was better are missing the point! The Magic WANT to be bad for the next few years so they can get better draft picks and rebuild in the same manner that OKC did. They intentionally rejected players in the deal whonwould have made them just good enough to place outside of lottery pick consideration while also keeping DH out of their conference.
