Mario Chalmers Says He’s a Top-10 NBA Point Guard

by Eldon Khorshidi | @eldonadam

Miami Heat point guard Mario Chalmers earned the respect and swayed the opinions of many fans during last year’s Playoffs, playing an instrumental role throughout the Miami Heat’s Championship run. In Game 4 of the NBA Finals, the Kansas product had a breakthrough 25-point performance, with 12 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. He followed that up with a solid 10 point, 7 assists, 2 rebound line in the series-clinching Game 5. And according to Chalmers, who will be entering only his fifth NBA season, he’s barely approached the surface in terms of his talent level and production potential. While he still has a lot of room to grow, Chalmers believes right now he’s already a top-10 NBA point guard.

More details, via BleacherReport.com:

Mario Chalmers: “[Rondo's] not the best, but he’s in the top five. There are a lot of great point guards in the league, Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Steve Nash. There are a lot of great guards in the NBA so for him to say he’s the best is a pretty bold statement. I’d say that I am in the front end of the top 10. [By the end of my career] if I’m not the best, than at least one of the best.”

I admire Chalmers heart and I know he really believes he is top 10 but that was a bold statement about himself. I could name 10 point guards that are way better than him.

  • Caboose

Teague is not a stud by any means, but you can’t convince me that he wouldn’t make that Heat squad better.

  • robb

Sometimes self confidence can be ridiculous.

  • LakeShow

Dude, common. Lukey Luke tries his butt off.
He’s just small and weak. So yeah he sucks, but he tries!!!
    Is Kemba really that bad??

  • Caboose

Yeah, he was pretty awful…not Ridnour bad, but bad.

  • biggieman

    1. Chris Paul
    2. Deron Williams
    3. Russell Westbrook
    4. Derrick Rose (if healthy)
    5. Steve Nash
    6. Tony Parker
    7 Chauncey Billups (if healthy)
    8. Steph Curry
    9. Kyrie Irving
    9. Dru Holiday
    11. Ricky Rubio
    12. Brandon Jennings

Na I agree on paper yeah but he would be driving mostly, he wouldn’t be ball-handling or shooting much cause I don’t believe he’s a good shooter. Again this is limited to the many few times I’ve seen him. If he’s 1 dimensional he therefore would be easy to shut down.

  • Caboose

He is a 34% 3pt shooter…I do like Teague, he’s just infinitely smarter than Chalmers.

@disqus_j65FuvcSML:disqus Kemba is not in their category as an on the ball defender. But he gets fucking lost when he’s not guarding the ball. he’s the only one of them that can and will improve immensely on that end with experience. He’s got the athletic gifts to be decent.

  • kh

What do you expect him to say? “There are a lot of great guards in the NBA, I’m probably close to the bottom of that list.” He has to know he’s garbage but he can’t think that way or else he’ll be even worse (if possible). I don’t agree with him AT ALL, but I commend his confidence.

  • Redd

Wtf, I replied to this! But anyways, yes on paper he would. But the kid wouldn’t be ball-handling(isn’t better at it than Mario also). He’d mostly be driving and he can’t shoot all that well(from the times I saw him). So you’d easily shut down a predictable 1 dimension PG.

  • Redd

You guys do realize this is probably to draw attention to Spalding? A basketball player signs a shoe deal that puts him in the spotlight and he gets loud.

  • brrr-knee

he’s maybe a top ten role player, would not have had that success if he weren’t on a team with Lebron

  • german

Wow no he didn’t!!! Now we know what chalmers did this summer he became a drug addict.

yea you got D Rose a little low there bud…..and you completely left out Ty Lawson

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-Washington/100000105632561 Anthony Washington

every basketball player probably has this concept or mind state in their head. It’s part of being a pro, you consider yourself the best. Chalmers isn’t a top 10 pg, but he is a top 10 winner. So to make him happy he could be a top 10 winning pg lol.

  • Comment_System

    your dumb*ss left out rondo.

  • robb

Maybe he said he’s a 10 points per game guard. That’s realistic.

  • LakeShow

    Semi.

  • O

That was pretty damn funny. LOL

  • Caboose

Did everyone gloss over the bit about “[By the end of my career] if I’m not the best, then at least one of the best”? Not sure exactly what he’s saying but it’s either:
    A. He believes he’ll surpass Magic/Stockton/etc. by the end of his career.
    B. At the end of his career, he’ll be the best point guard in the league.
I can’t tell which is more stupid.

  • Justin05

    1. Chris Paul
    2. Derrick Rose (if healthy)
    3. Deron Williams
    4. Rajon Rondo
    5. Russell Westbrook
    6. Tony Parker
    7. Steve Nash
    8. Stephen Curry (if healthy)
    9. Ty Lawson
    10. Chauncey Billups (if healthy)
I say Mario is in the top 15 but he could never get to top 5 in his career. Not with guys like Wall, Lawson, Westbrook, Curry, and Irving are maturing.

  • thursti

i’d put calderon over him too

  • Michelle

He is a funny guy. Can anyone name starting pointguards who are worse then him?

  • MirChilly

John Wall is pure hype!!! Stop it!!! Please stop it

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    both are stupider.

  • Jimbo

    raymond felton

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

Gonna have to argue with your list, even when NOT healthy, those guys are better than Chalmers.

  • Rainman

ah hell naw, he said TOP END of the top 10! Whats this dude on?

  • Rainman

He’s actually one of the lower end starting point guards in the whole league statistically speaking…He’s not even the main ball handler for his team. Im still shocked at this. I always knew he was dumb…but damn.

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

I already hated Chalmers, this didn’t help. He had one good game against the Celts, in large part because they were focusing on EVERYONE ELSE and now he’s top 10 in the NBA? smh

  • Rainman

are u still mad at how he raped the bulls? lol

  • LakeShow

6’4″, super athletic, elite passer, decent defender, 16-8-4 career averages is not hype.
That’s a unique talent waiting to blossom.
Sorry if someone hurt your feelings and said he could be better than Rose or something. Fact is he is a top 10 PG and has the abilities and skills to be top 5.

  • K8be

Shouldn’t the Point Guard bring the ball up and down the court????

  • BRAVO

Lol not even. Your more in top 30 point guards I say

  • YKnot

Hanging out with Beasley again? Did we learn nothing during rookie camp?

  • Armando

If the reports are right Tyreke Evans will be the Kings starting small forward this season (Thomas, Thornton, Evans, Robinson, Cousins).

Difficult to rank so I’ll do it this way:
    1: Paul
    2: Rose, Williams, Parker, Westbrook
    3: Irving, Nash
4: Wall, Rubio, Holiday, Conley, Jennings, Lowry, Lawson
    5: Curry, Dargic, Billups

  • Redd

    Who did Sir Stupid?

  • The Seed

I would take Brandon Knight and Austin Rivers over him and even Will Bynum and even Mike Conley.

  • The Seed

I would take Brandon Knight and Austin Rivers over him and even Will Bynum and even Mike Conley.

  • Slick Ric

The epitome of an irrational confidence guy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Brill86 Andrew Woods

overall mario isnt anywhere near top 10, but i will say this, 3mins to go in a close game their are maybe only 4pgs that i would want to shoot the ball besides him.

  • http://www.facebook.com/myselfunderkarma Fredd.

Reminds me of paul pierce declaring himself the best player in the world after the 08′ finals … ( haha )

  • Matisse

The only top ten lists that Mario has any business being mentioned in is top ten defensive PG’s and players who smoke the most pot.

  • The Conqueror

    Better than Chalmers
    CP3
    DRose
    Westbrook
    Rondo
    DWill
    Tony Parker
    Steve Nash
    Kyrie
    Darren Collison
    Jrue Holliday
    Jennings
    Lou Williams
    Jameer Nelson
    Chauncey
    Andre Miller
    Kyle Lowry
    Stephen Curry
    Mike Conley
    Goran Dragic
I’m sure there’s plenty more. Dude needs to gtfoh though.

  • Jimbo

hold up… Calderon is definitely at least a top 15 point guard. He has the lowest assist-turnover ratio, other than CP3.

  • Youngindy21

You completely forgot George Hill on that list.

  • Superman24

    Haha! Ftw

  • Youngindy21

He averages 8ppg and 3.6apg and he thinks he’s a top 10 point guard? I am all for having confidence and believing in yourself but this is just ridiculous.
