Mario Chalmers Says He’s a Top-10 NBA Point Guard

by Eldon Khorshidi | @eldonadam

Miami Heat point guard Mario Chalmers earned the respect and swayed the opinions of many fans during last year’s Playoffs, playing an instrumental role throughout the Miami Heat’s Championship run. In Game 4 of the NBA Finals, the Kansas product had a breakthrough 25-point performance, with 12 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. He followed that up with a solid 10 point, 7 assists, 2 rebound line in the series-clinching Game 5. And according to Chalmers, who will be entering only his fifth NBA season, he’s barely approached the surface in terms of his talent level and production potential. While he still has a lot of room to grow, Chalmers believes right now he’s already a top-10 NBA point guard.

More details, via BleacherReport.com:

Mario Chalmers: “[Rondo's] not the best, but he’s in the top five. There are a lot of great point guards in the league, Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Steve Nash. There are a lot of great guards in the NBA so for him to say he’s the best is a pretty bold statement. I’d say that I am in the front end of the top 10. [By the end of my career] if I’m not the best, than at least one of the best.”

The front end of the top 10? Dafuq is this nikka smoking, and where can i get some?

  • Salty

There’s a reason why Mario Chalmers has to say that Mario Chalmers is a top ten point guard…because nobody else is saying it.

  • Gold

Now Rondo Want to sing R&B. Seriously? http://celticfanchat.com/2012/08/30/rondo-to-work-on-rb-cd/

  • Madubbs

    Chalmers Has Potential.

  • twocentsinit

Not a Charlmers fan AT ALL! but, he was the only consistent positive during the 2011 NBA finals (check the video). And even if all the attention WAS on LBJ or Wade in the 2012 NBA Finals, to his credit he stepped up big time in pressure moments and made the open shots necessary to carry the Heat to victory. ~ Avid Knick Fan

  • twocentsinit

Understood. But wouldn’t you want a Confident point guard on your squad?? This also puts the pressure on him to continue to get better since he decided to open up his trap! ~ Avid Knick Fan

  • Maimi fanclub

    Top 10 garbage G

  • Sgt Fletch

GTFOHWTBS !!!!!!……..Chalmers = long line of scrubs who play with stars and think they are better than they are. If not for him getting league minimum when the Heat Signed Lebron and Bosh…..he would’ve been traded with Beasley for cap space….See Big Baby Davis, and for some of you old school fans…See Scott Williams (MJ’s Bulls Teams)

  • Chucky53

Ummm no Chalmers is nowhere near no Top 10 PG in the NBA is he going krazy? What I will say he on the bottom of the top 15. Why did Miami have Bibby over him if he was all of that for all that time. He must be looking to up his value with this comment because of the championship. I’ll admit that Chalmers has some skills but he aint Top 10 of nothing yet!!!

  • Caboose

C’mon dude. Augustin played 48 games last year. He started 46 of them. And yes, Augustin averaged more assists than Chalmers. He also shot 38% from the field and was near the league leaders in turnovers per 36 minutes. And defense. Chalmers is better than Augustin, by a good margin.

  • Caboose

Confidence is good. Delusional narcissism is bad.

Haahahahaha..is this a joke..who in the Red Hell is this Guy…Fuck u bitch, wit lil Katt Williams voice…do you realy think NBA fans are stupid/demented and squint, bitch please!!! do u know who got you that bloody fuckin RING..

  • Caboose

16-8-4 is not hot air. Those are pretty good stats.

  • Caboose

I used to be high on Jennings but yeah, that 55 point game doomed him. He’s near the Rodney Stuckey level, probably. Still better than Calderon though.

  • Caboose

    A. Darren Collison was the starting point guard. Hill only started 9 games.
    B. All rankings were based on last year. Yes, Hill probably will start at point now with Collison gone, but you can’t go off of future when compiling a list about the present.

  • william

I’d say he has the skills of a top 10 pg, great shooter, ball handler, excellent at getting to the rim, and so so clutch! however, he just isnt given the opportunities a top 10 pg in a regular situation would get, it depends how you look at it I guess

  • Caboose

    Burned Knicks fan?

  • Batens

You can’t claim your a top PG when you gots buch of superstars on Ur team… I doubt any team goes in playing the Heat saying, “How are we going to shutdown Chalmers?”On another note, A PG’s role is to aim to make his team better.. Like Nash, who basically made Amare what he is today and gave Gortat the best season of his career. If I was playin along side Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Ray Ray, and the rest of that talented bench, I’d probably be saying stupid things to.

  • d.macaroni

What he meant to say was that he’s definitely a top-10 point guard on the Miami Heat roster.

  • Jimbo

Nash SEEMS like he is a better defender because his teammates cover it up, and we all know Bargnani never plays defence. Calderon has a better understanding of the game then most of the PG’s rated higher than him, and he was ranked fourth in assists last season on a basement dwelling team.

  • LakeShow

    In somewhat order:
    CP3
    D-Will
    Westbrook
    D-Rose(anywhere from #2 to #8)

    Irving
    Rondo
    Steve Nash

    Parker
    Lowry

    John Wall

Yeah, I got him at #10

  • Beavis Trollson

    Monta Ellis too

  • DENNIS V

Le BRON IS ALWAYS SHAKING HIS HEAD IN DISGUST AT MARIO CHALMERS.HE HATES HIS GAME.

  • LakeShow

Brian Cardinal would finish them all Mortal Combat style.

  • Caboose

What are you trying to say? That Calderon is a top 15 point guard? Want my evidence?
    1. John Hollinger’s analysis and the man himself say that Calderon is the worst defensive starting point guard in the league. By far.
    2. Over the past 4 years, Calderon’s defensive win shares have averaged less than 1. That’s bad.
    3. Last season Calderon took 9 shots to average 10 points. That’s rather inefficient scoring.
    4. Calderon is a good passer. But nobody else on that Raptors team initiates or creates offense. Calderon averaged 8.8 apg. The next highest was 3.8. There’s a reason why Calderon got a chance to average so many assists.
    5. Defense matters. Period. Nash overcomes his defensive shortcomings with ruthless efficiency and a dominance on offense. Calderon has neither.
    Now will you stop?

wow, I just read an article on the top point guards in the league and it was really good…but Chalmers wasn’t in it. Check it out guys, let’s debate over there about real all-star point guards! Oh and there are some funny memes too…http://www.bballmemes.com/archives/688

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Nash is not nearly as bad defensively as his reputation would imply. He’s a bad defender, but he is not anywhere near the Jose Calderon conversation on that end. Calderon is, and has been since he got in the NBA, other worldly bad defensively. Having him and Andrea Bargnagni in the same lineup is a big reason why Toronto has been viewed as one of the weakest defensive teams of the modern era.

  • AT

woah woah i saw jameer nelson ahead of chalmers.jameer will be nothing wit out dwight tis year i expect Mario’s stats to be better then jameer’s n maybe coldaron

  • Jimbo

    1. Calderon runs the offence well… if I wanted my PG to score, I would’ve called Russell Westbrook. He runs a poor team very well, so he technically does make up for his poor defence by your logic.
    2. 9 shots to average 10 points is about 46% shooting, which is pretty efficient for me.
    3. Who could initiate offence on that Suns team?
    4. Nash overcame his defensive woes through his teammates helping him out on defence.

  • djjd

im prtty sure rondo never almost lost his job to a rookie why dont you work on bein an allstar reserve there tough guy

  • lmfbaochalmersno

Somebody musta put his stats up wayyy too high on NBA2k.. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leonard-Taylor/100000998640068 Leonard Taylor

what the fuck is this nigga smoking? i just sat down and thought of at least 12 point guards who are better than him and i wans even trying.

  • kevin

What are they smoking in Miami! The sign of a great PG is to them on a team that’s not very good (not the Heat) and see how they preform, like Nash in Phx, Paul in NO and D-Will in UT. Chalmers is not even in the top 20! Lebron’s the pointforward!

  • kevin

10 years from now when people look back at this championship, they won’t even remember Chalmers was even on the team!

  • Dave

Rondos much closer to #1 then Chalmers is to the top 10, Chalmers might not even be better than Norris Cole next year

  • Buster

Yeah he is probably a top 10 point guard… in the Southeast Division!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/brad.j.douglass Brad James Douglass

Ha! (All that needs to be said)

  • The

Mario chalmers……….you can’t be a top 10 point guard when you’re a role player who’s just expected to play defense and shoot threes

  • Larry

That’s like saying Kobe is the league leader in assists

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bj-GeechieDatnigga-Barrett/602065342 Bj GeechieDatnigga Barrett

worse? u say it like Dragic is garbage..Chalmers is definitely better than Lin but not Dragic..we saw wat Chalmers did to Lin in the Heat-Kicks game

  • http://www.facebook.com/vinicius.manhaes.andrade Vinícius Manhães Andrade

    Chalmers is a joke…

  • http://www.facebook.com/bob.merrihew Bob Merrihew

He’s a baller. He is fundmentally sound, makes big plays at big times, defends well, but isn’t a All Star polished athlete and scorer. I like his game, but “the front end of the top10″ is pushing it a little. He is a great fit for the way the Heat play. He would not be successful on, say, the Magic

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bj-GeechieDatnigga-Barrett/602065342 Bj GeechieDatnigga Barrett

Lin isnt better, right now kidd isnt, nelson..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bj-GeechieDatnigga-Barrett/602065342 Bj GeechieDatnigga Barrett

Rose from 2-8? how bout from 1-3..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bj-GeechieDatnigga-Barrett/602065342 Bj GeechieDatnigga Barrett

Dragic 21? Calderon 27? u out of yo fuckin mind dude..both of them are better than a number of guys u put a head of them

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bj-GeechieDatnigga-Barrett/602065342 Bj GeechieDatnigga Barrett

Parker and Westbrook are not tied for 2 with Rose and Williams who should be at 1 with CP3..Rondo should be at 2..Westbrook and Parker at 3 with Nash..and Irving is at 4

  • Justin05

I agree w/ your guys’ comments. I should have said Mario was top 20, that’s what I was thinking first anyway. Just trying to give the guy some credit since he stepped up on the biggest stage in basketball.

  • Caboose

What an intelligent comment. You are right, I was out of my mind. You won me over with your incredibly coherent and cooly logical reasoning. Bravo.

  • Caboose

You’re right, Calderon is AMAZING on offense. That’s why he’s always been on winning teams that have great offensive efficiency. He’s such an impact player, idk what I was thinking. I’m sure the Raptors will continue to succeed with Calderon at the helm.

  • Jimbo

Heavy contract, it was rumoured that if the Raptors amnestied him, many playoff caliber teams (like the Mavs) would be interested in him.
