Mark Cuban Would Never Trade Dirk Nowitzki

Many expect the Dallas Mavericks to be stuck in the middle of a very strong Western Conference, as the Mavs failed to land a superstar player this summer. And, if Dallas does in fact get mired in mediocrity, some expect owner Mark Cuban to consider trading star Dirk Nowitzki. Well, according to Cuban, there’s no chance. Via ESPN.com: “‘I’m not going to trade him,’ Cuban said Tuesday on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM’s Ben and Skin Show.  Of course, Cuban wouldn’t want to deal Dirk. And the Mavs couldn’t pull the trigger on a trade involving Nowitzki without his permission anyway, considering that his contract includes one of the two no-trade clauses in the NBA.  But what if Nowitzki requested to be moved to a contender for the twilight of his prime? ‘Maybe I’d have the conversation,’ Cuban said. ‘But I know Dirk; he wouldn’t.’”

Make sure Kyrie is in there! He is technically a foreign born player

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Kyrie has only played one year. He dosent belong up there with the greats…yet

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kyrie is also one year into his career.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_Gin%C3%B3bili nbk

Here goes, (listed in terms of best career overall, not just NBA career)
.1)Hakeem Olajuwan (Only foreign player with Rings, an MVP, and DPOY award)
.2)Patrick Ewing (would probably be with Hakeem if he didn’t play in the same era)
.3)Dirk Nowitzki (Only other foreign player with both a Ring and MVP)
.4)Manu Ginobili (look at his honors on his wikipedia page, click my name)
.5)Dominique Wilkins (unfortunately played in the 80s and has no big time accomplishments other than a scoring title)
.6)Steve Nash (do these need to be listed? he was born in south africa – he’s Canadian – doesn’t eat sugar)
    .7)Dikembe Mutombo (4 time DPOY)
    .8)Tony Parker (3 Rings, 1 finals MVP, 1 2nd-Team All-NBA, 1 3rd-Team All-NBA)
    .9)Pau Gasol (what’a sissy)
.10)Drazen Petrovic (what’a shooter – plus various european titles and brief NBA success)

  • LA Huey

    What about Darko?

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Good list nbk, but I have TP ahead of Dikembe Mutombo

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

NBK did you leave Duncan off your list for a reason?

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Duncan is foreign? Where is he from?

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_Gin%C3%B3bili nbk

it was really close for me, but i gave it to Dikembe because i feel like SO FAR he has been the better individual –
    .(Dikembe) 4 DPOY – 6-Time All Defense – 1 Second-Team All-NBA, 2 Third-Team All-NBA, 8 time All star, All Rookie 1st Team.
    .(Tony P) 1 Finals MVP – 1 Second-Team, 1 Third-Team, All Rookie 1st Team

The Virgin Islands are considered a US territory.

  • MikeC.

    @Mamba – Virgin Islands.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Wikipedia says that Duncan is American

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_Gin%C3%B3bili nbk

OH and TP has 4 All-Star births too.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Oh. OK. I had TP ahead for rings and personally, I think he’s better. nbk, as of 2013 who do you think is the best current foreign player. I got Parker, Ibaka, or one of the Gasol’s

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_Gin%C3%B3bili nbk

It’s still Pau or Dirk imo. Mike Brown’s offense and Dirk’s exhaustion are the reasons it doesn’t seem that way.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Ya I agree. I hate the Mavs, always have, but I feel sorry for Dirk. And I don’t know why everybody was ripping Pau last year. He didn’t look too bad to me, outside of the playoffs.

    @JTaylor21 Posted: Aug.22 at 10:58 am

I was making the statement that Dirk is the best European ever and then asked about Hakeem.
Guess it’s my fault that I seem more stupid than I am.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_Gin%C3%B3bili nbk

He was uncomfortable. The Offense Mike Brown implemented was just putrid and frankly stupid. Any time you are bringing your 7 foot, best post man in the league out to the 3 point line on a regular basis, then you should know your offense is broken. But he didn’t. He just kept doing the same stupid ass thing.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

I agree. I can remember countless Laker games where I told my dad, “why the hell is Gasol it the three point line?” I hope he dosent screw up this thing with Nash and Dwight. Hopefully the veterans like Kobe, Nash and Jamison will know what to do

  • http://slamonline.com LLC#12

Whenever conversations like this arise I always think how much I’d prefer to watch a “USA vs the world” all star game than West conference vs East conference…

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_Gin%C3%B3bili nbk

If he is going to run a princeton offense like he said, then there will be sets with Gasol on the perimeter. Implementing that offense with this roster makes little to no sense, so i hope that was all a bunch of bullsh*t. The Princeton offense typically takes 1 big (Gasol) out to the perimeter, and takes the ball out of the primary ball handler’s (Steve Nash) hands.

If Team USA isn’t going to lose to Spain, they aren’t going to lose to a foreign all-star team. The benefit from having so much talent is negated by that talent not playing together, while team USA has more talent and has played together.

The best foreign players i know of (I’m not counting schrempf or whatever bc i’ve never seen him or heard of him until just know) from greatest to least

    Hakeem Olajuwan
    Tim Duncan
    Pat Ewing
    Manu Ginnobli
    Tony Parker
    Pau Gasol
    Toni Kukoc
    Dirk Nowitizki
    Steve Nash
    Dominique Wilkins

Dirk should obviously be higher, but I F*cking hate him bc of the 2011 nba finals. what do you think?

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

also NBK w/ dwight not coming in for a while, bc of back injury i think Gasol will slide to the 5 and Jamison will play PF, and he’ll be put on the perimeter.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_Gin%C3%B3bili nbk

Tim Duncan was technically born in the United States. Just not in an actual State.

  • LA Huey

I wish homecourt advantage in the NBA Finals was decided by the winning conference of the ASG. That’s the one thing baseball has right. There’s still going to be plenty of matador defense but fewer silly alley oop attempts in the 1st half.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

^^ fine. but I’m leaving him on the list just cuz.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_Gin%C3%B3bili nbk

Dwight will supposedly be back by November. Which is during the first month of the season. No way Mike Brown implements an offense in training camp that they only use for a month or two.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

No love for The Machine? Give the man some respect, make that double champ respect.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Princenton offense is stupid for this Laker team

  • jayrose

    Lake these balls

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Dat, you really had never heard of Detlef Schrempf?
    Damn son!
He was a better version of Toni Kukoc IMO.

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

Yeah never lol… And word? I’ll check out some of his highlights

  • LA Huey

Detlef > Dirk. In my heart, that is.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

I watched the Vlade’s documentary the other day about the late 80′s/early 90s Yugoslavian/Croatian national team and the falling out between Vlade and Petrovic due to the conflict going on in their home countries. I haven’t seen a lot of footage on Petrovic but apparently dude was balling once he got traded to the Nets. Busting Mike on the regular and talking trash to him. Dropping 50-60 pts as a teenager back home. Gifted shooter. Even DC thought he was the real deal. Tragic end to such a talent. Any of the gramps in here see him play?

  • http://slamonline.com LLC#12

@nbk yeah of course, it wouldn’t be too close, but still entertaining!
@nick tha quick, he was before my time too, but on youtube theres a pretty insane video of a euroleague game where he drops like 40 but Oscar Schmidt has like 60 for the other team, crazy, short shorts and bad hairstyles everywhere.

  • derby

    Duncan is an olympian too

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Glad someone just mentioned Brazil’s Oscar, easily one of the greatest scorers ever foreign or American just ask Barkley, a pity he never played in the NBA. Also have to give a shout out to Sarunas Marciulionis (not saying that he should make the top 5 or even 10, but for sure the yop 15). Sarunas was gritty and could really shoot the ball. Back in 1996 I met him as a 16 year old when my team competed in a tournament in his native Lithuania, the tournament was held at Sarunas’ basketball academy and my team (national champs and undefeated for 12+ months at that time) got our as@es handed to us, finishing 13th out of 14 teams. In the last game to decide who finished last, we where behind by 4 with 20 secs left on the clock. I took the inbounds pass and hit a rainbow 3 from the top of the key. Afterwards me and my backcourt-mate pressured their guard into a turnover (actually pushing/fouling the heck out of him but the refs swallowed their whistles) and then our leading scorer drove and hit a lay up at the buzzer so we finished 13th – true story.. Ohh those were the days..

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

That tournament was the first time I realized I was never going to made it into the NBA, too many good players around with way more size and strength. But looking back as a soon to be 31 year old with a bad knee, those were really the days. Gotta cherish the memories..

  • http://www.mensa.org/workout.php shutup

I meant NBA accomplishments.(just to clarify)

    Oh word that makes sense
