Mark Cuban Would Never Trade Dirk Nowitzki

Many expect the Dallas Mavericks to be stuck in the middle of a very strong Western Conference, as the Mavs failed to land a superstar player this summer. And, if Dallas does in fact get mired in mediocrity, some expect owner Mark Cuban to consider trading star Dirk Nowitzki. Well, according to Cuban, there’s no chance. Via ESPN.com: “‘I’m not going to trade him,’ Cuban said Tuesday on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM’s Ben and Skin Show.  Of course, Cuban wouldn’t want to deal Dirk. And the Mavs couldn’t pull the trigger on a trade involving Nowitzki without his permission anyway, considering that his contract includes one of the two no-trade clauses in the NBA.  But what if Nowitzki requested to be moved to a contender for the twilight of his prime? ‘Maybe I’d have the conversation,’ Cuban said. ‘But I know Dirk; he wouldn’t.’”

Dirk seems like the type that would take the Steve Nash route and just play his heart out until the team realizes he deserves better. Dirk has his ring though, so I could be wrong. That hunger for another could push him to want more at some point in his career.

  • bike

Mark thought he knew Jason Kidd well also.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Dirk is cool man. I don’t think he is consumed with winning a bunch of rings. He doesn’t want to be stuck on a loser, but he’s not driven to collect rings, I think. He’s already the greatest foreign player in NBA history, a sure-fire Hall of Famer. He can chill.

  • bigA

@Allenp Greatest European ever, is he better than Hakeem? I didn’t watch enough of the Dream to know that.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

WTF is this Dallas Mavericks day today?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Does Hakeem Olajuwon sound like an european name? Just saying.

  • http://nba.com GP23

    Co-sign Allenp
    Hakeem isn’t European.

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

Dirk is def the best european player of all time, but not the best foreign player of all time. That belongs to Hakeem, and Dirk might be second or third, flip flopping with Pat Ewing, depending on what ppl deem important stats in this debate.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

I might catch flak for this (but oh well f**k y’all) but I never really considered Hakeem a foreign player like guys like Dirk, Ginobili, etc. Hakeem played college ball in the states, became a US citizen and played for the US olympic team. But that’s just me though, I know he from Nigeria but yeah

“…considering that his contract includes one of the two no-trade clauses in the NBA.”
Who is the other one. Anyone knows ?

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

@DaBigFundamental – Kobe has the other one

  • Björn Atli

    @DABIGFUNDAMENTAL -Kobe has the other.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Steve Nash should be in the conversation too.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Hakeem and TD are the 2 greatest/best foreign players of all-time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

petrovic is in my top 5 all time euros, sabonis is in there too, pre-NBA Sabonis was a BEAST

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I don’t count you as a foreign player if you played college ball in the USA.
Hakeem, Nash and Duncan all played their college ball here. That’s just my rule, you’re free to create your own rules.
I think of foreign players as players whose first experience with the American system was the NBA.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Well…if you do that it will be mostly europeans at the top because most cats from Africa/Canada go to colleges in the US before playing in the L.

  • DABIGFUNDAMENTAL

    thks

  • http://dassdas Zeiram

I think the national team criteria fits best imho. Did player x play for the us – if yes he can´t be considered foreign. By that metric Dirk is the greatest foreign player ever followed by Nash. (My inner Bill Simmons really wants to rank all of them but just know, we´d probably overvalue NBA credentials in this excercise)

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So you don’t consider Pau and Marc Gasol to be foreign players either? They played high school ball in the US.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

My top 5 all-time foriegn players would probably go like:
    1. Dirk
    2. Manu
    3. Kukoc
    4. Petrovic
    5. Detlef Schrempf

  • Rik Smits Mullet

dont forget about rik smits. lol.
for sure top 10 euro player.
and dont forget he started playing basketball when he was 17.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Yeah Rik Smits is actually right on the outside looking in of my top 5, he makes my top 10 easily. That dude could play

  • http://nba.com GP23

Manu Ginobili is up there aswell. Tremendous athlete, with a superb offensive skillset. Great competitor.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Foreign Player’s who had to adjust to the NBA
    .Dirk
    .Manu
    .Sabonis
    .Petrovic
    .Parker
    .Pau
    .Kukoc
    .Divac
    .Yao
    .Foreign Players in general
    .Hakeem
    .Ewing
    .Wilkins
    .Mutombo
    .Nash
    .Deng

Top 5 foreign players: Dylan Dylan Dylan Dylan Dylan

  • http://nba.com GP23

nbk.. Only Marc Gasol went to High School in America, not Pau. Pau was a professional in Barcelona, and then he was drafted to the Grizzlies. Just saying.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

ahh, my bad GP, thanks for correcting that.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That’s a good question on Marc. Didn’t he just play a year in the U.S. an then go overseas as a pro?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Kukoc should really lower than Shrempf. Shrempf was a much better player.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

He played at least 2 years in High School. Moved to Tennessee in 2001. Graduated in 03.

  • LA Huey

Winning a single chip took so much out of Dirk and he’s not committed to putting in what’s required to get back to the summit (as evidenced by coming in last year out of shape). He’s cool with if he never wins one again. As long as the Mavs are in playoff contention, he’ll be fine with riding with them into his sunset. I don’t blame him for feeling that way though. I’d probably do the same in his shoes.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Huey, Germany made him play in the summer last year. He didn’t get any time to rest. I don’t think he was out of shape, he was just tired.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

@Allen yeah I wanted to put Shrempf over Kukoc as well, I guess the 3 rings Kukoc got factored in my decision

  • http://www.mensa.org/workout.php shutup

What about Dikembe?, even though he played college ball in the states definitely a foreign born player. Imo Parker> Dirk. Parker is the most decorated foreign born player.

  • LA Huey

nbk, forgot about that. Still, I’m certain he’s fine coasting ’til he hangs them up.

  • LA Huey

My criteria for whether I consider you a foreign player: do you have a noticeable accent?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

SLAM won’t let me post Manu’s accomplishments. But he is far and away the most decorated foreign player of all time. Not even close.

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

Why does Slam hate on NBK??

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Just wondering, where do you guys think Pau Gasol ranks all time, and if you guys consider Steve Nash foreign, then where does he rank. I don’t have Gasol very high and I live in Canada so Steve Nash isn’t foreign to me.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

SLAM hates us all and wants us to be miserable.
    .
    Hakeem
    Ewing
    Dirk
    Nash
    Wilkins
    Manu
    Yao
    Parker
    Gasol
    Shrempf
    Dikembe
    Kukoc
    Divac
    .
Not counting Duncan and maybe missing someone?
That my list top to bottom.
    I’d hear arguments for changes.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Sabonis and Petrovic just didn’t get enough PT and years in for me to form an opinion to rate them above the other guys. Although both of their skills were top 5 i’d say.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Lakeshow, unless Steve gets a ring this year,I would have Wilkins over Nash. And Parker over Yao

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Other than that, solid list bro

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

I know Dominique was born in France to military parents but i’ve honestly never heard him considered as a foriegn player.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Fair BM.
Those are definitely good thoughts. Nash is a hard one. 2 time MVP and top 10 PG ever though..
Yao I have over Parker just because of his affect on the defensive side.

  • http://Slamonline.com Tyler

    Boris Diaw anyone? lol

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Ya. I’m not really one to comment because I don’t consider Nash foreign. I had Parker higher because of rings and his greater affect on the game. But other than that I agree with that list

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk

I’m bout to try and put all foreign BORN players in order when I get back to my comp

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

    Looking forward to it
