Mike Krzyzewski Advised Shane Battier to Sign With Miami Heat

Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski played an instrumental role in forward Shane Batter signing with the Miami Heat last summer. According to Battier, Coach K advised him to join forces with the Big 3 because, pretty obviously, that’s where Battier had the best chance of winning a championship. Via DukeChronicle.com: “‘Shane is the kind of player who deserves to be a champion,’ said Nick Arison, who was a manager of the Duke basketball team while Battier played at Duke. While Arison sold Miami to Battier in free agency, he was also encouraged to go to South Beach by another Blue Devil. Battier said he received a call of congratulations from Duke basketball head coach Krzyzewski, who has seen just him and Danny Ferry leave Durham to become NBA champions during his tenure. ‘[Krzyzewski] was the one who wanted me to go to Miami more than anyone else,’ Battier said. ‘In the end, like always, he was right.’”

    Great advice

Good choice and I thought Shane came up really big in the Finals, he was hitting so many 3′s, I’m pretty sure Scott Brooks is still wondering what happened.

The thing is, Battier didn’t just take a back seat to the chip, he was instrumental in helping the Heat win.

MIA doesn’t win the Championship without Battier. His ability to guard multiple positions (especially the 3/4) gave MIA the luxury to play LeBron at the 4 and not worry about all-star 3s going wild.

The Shock was assistant coach of a grassroots team that faced Battier when he was still at Detroit Country Day. He played fundamentally sound basketball, the same way he played in the NBA finals. It was good to see a guy who plays the game the correct way take the cake.

also the fact that he turned into chuck person from 3 a few games

Really I think his ability to stretch the floor was more of an impact than his defense. KD was eating him up (although who didn’t get lit up by KD other than MAYBE Bron…). He was hitting everything in the finals. Didn’t he hit 70+% from 3s the first 3/4 games + playing 40 min!

He was the only Heat player I was happy to see win a ‘Chip
