Paul Pierce ‘a Little Bitter’ About Ray Allen Leaving Celtics for Heat

Doc Rivers blamed himself for Ray Allen’s shocking departure to South Beach this summer. And Ray’s former teammate Paul Pierce admits that he’s feeling a little salty about the whole thing. From the Boston Celtics’ team website (via ESPN): “Ray made the best decision for him,’ Pierce said. ‘That’s what it’s all about: You get in these situations, you become a free agent, and you make a decision based on what’s best for you and your family. Ray will always be a brother for me. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be wearing a championship ring. So the things he was able to do for this organization, will never be forgotten.’ Asked if he’s talked to Allen since he spurned Boston’s two-year, $12 million offer to sign with Miami for half the value, Pierce said, ‘A couple texts. I’m a little bitter that he went to Miami, but he’s still a brother of mine.’ Pierce said that, despite the departure of Allen, he is a fan of what Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and his staff have been able to do this offseason, reassembling much of the core, highlighted by a three-year contract extension for Kevin Garnett. ‘I love what Danny’s been able to do,’ Pierce said. ‘It was a tough decision this summer. A lot was riding on what direction we were going to head in. It was just a domino effect, once we signed Kevin, we knew were going to try to make another run at it. That’s pretty much the way I looked at it. Once we signed him, a number of guys were able to jump on board. I thought Danny did a good job of trying to replace Ray Allen. As you know Ray Allen went off to Miami, on his choice, but he was a great teammate, it was fun playing with him. But I think the guys coming in here — Jason Terry, Courtney Lee, trying to get a healthy Jeff Green, even some of our rookies — I think we’ve added a lot more depth, and it’s going to take a lot of pressure off me this upcoming season.’ [...] Pierce expressed ‘fresh excitement’ for the new season and noted: ‘We’re going to build on what we did last year. I think we”re more talented. We were able to bring back Brandon Bass — we brought back our starters and then added to it. I think we have a deeper and better bench. Hopefully, it reflects better in the playoffs, so that we can go for a championship.’”

Ray to me, messed himself up with this move. I feel he could have went into the HOFame as a Celtic. Now Ray might have to go in as a Sonic. Ray still will get the same amount of shots and if Heat lose in playoffs-Ray will get blamed.

  • pposse

this article and the one with doc rivers seems like they are taking subliminal shots at ray, hoping that he ruins the heat team chemistry or something down the line.

the seed – both of your arguments are invalid. 1- basketball players don’t go in the hof with a specific team like in baseball. 2- lebron will always be blamed when the team that he is on doesn’t win. c’est la vie.

  • Riggs

T-$: lebron will not be blamed anymore after carrying his team last season, you can put money on that.

ya must not watch first take & etc.. to say lebron will not get blamed for failing. And its irrational for a bench player to get the blame.

Surely Ray goes into the Hall as a Celtic. Not a Sonic. If anything, he was better at the Bucks than the Sonics.
He will go in as a Celtic. This move won’t affect anything.

  • Basketball_iQ

Obviously someone above doesn’t watch basketball, bc you do go into the hall with a team & that team retires your jersey, if you’re great enough & went to multiple teams, ie: barkley, wilt, multiple teams will retire the #.
Paul has a right to be bitter bc he bought into doc’s theory of letting rondo control the ball more & IT WAS PAUL’S TEAM. he was wiling…for ray to feel slighted seems baby-ish.
Pack’m up bc the celtics are better now.
If you thought ray was a leader, a clutch threat, introduce yourself to jason terry who pulls out big games when his teams needs it, ala miami-KILLER.

It prob was a shock for Pierce. Time will heal and there is so much to look forward to for the Celtics!! They had some great pick ups during the off-season.

Ray will be a HOF’r – he doesn’t have to go in as a member of any team, so who gives a sh*t about that. And as PP said, Ray chose the best situation for himself. Oh and obviously, Paul is only bitter because he chose Miami, not just because he left.

  • Brahsef

It’s a business. As a player, you can’t be caught up on hurting feelings. You just go to the team you feel best suits your goals in life.

@BBallIQ Terry should tat another trophy on his other bicep for ultimate swag points. Worked the first time

I like miami and love jesus, but it was a bit of a shady move.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

The Heat are a better team. Ray wants another championship. Maybe he felt like, at 100% health, he didn’t want to come off the bench behind Avery Bradley. Pat Riley is a persuasive man. I can understand Paul being bitter because of the fact that he was a lone wolf in Boston until KG and Ray arrived. He got KG back and obviously wanted Ray as well. But a man has to do what he has to do. Now Miami will be significantly better than they were last season. It was most likely a tough decision, but I don’t think there’s anything noble or praiseworthy about going back to a team that’s worse than the team that’s after you when you’re free to make any decision you wish to make. To anyone who has an issue with Ray not going back to Boston only to probably lose to Miami for a 3rd time in the postseason next year, let it go.

@The-Seed & Bball-IQ : In the basketball HOF, you do NOT… i repeat do NOT have to go in representing a certain NBA team. This is not like the NFL or MLB hall of fame. Its a “Basketball” hall of fame for a reason. its for people that have made contributions to “basketball” on “every level”. High school basketball coaches are in the basketball hall of fame. College sports analysts (dick vitale) and women’s basketball coaches (i believe pat summit is in or will be inducted soon) go in. None of those people have affiliations to NBA teams and just go in as “people”. their plaques only show a player in some sort of jersey or apparel… no indication of a certain team unless requested. So therefore, ray allen won’t have to go into the hall of fame as a member of any team versus nfl players/mlb players whom have to go in as a member of a team. Just wanted 2 clear that up.

In terms of jersey retirement… thats a different story. ray probably could have had his jersey retired in seattle & boston but hey… he’s a miami heat player now. The only thing he messed up was the strength of friendships he had with celtic players & the community. He can forge new relationships community wise in miami but he probably won’t forge the friendships he had in boston… oh well. He’s used to seclusion. he’s a military kid. & to say ray would get blame for the heat losing? Please… t-money is 100% correct here. Lebron will be blamed for any losing that happens in miami. People like wade too much and don’t feel like bosh is a superstar so clearly lebron will get the blame. Ray will come off the bench… you don’t blame a guy like that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com flea

“If Heat lose in the playoffs Ray will get the blame”…Is a weak @ss argument. The fact is he DID GET plenty of blame for stretches of poor shooting in the playoffs in Beantown where he was part of the BIG 3. In MIA he will be a vet role player, Like shane is, with a little more pressure, BUT The chance of Boston losing in the playoffs as apposed to MIA is not really that close. So…

Between Rondo and Avery Bradley and Jason Terry where did Paul Pierce figure Ray Allen’s minutes were coming from?

  • greg

they can defend better with their current team and lineups they can deploy. PERIOD. they have great defenders in rondo, green, lee, and bradley on the outside, that is pretty good for dealing with whoever they need to in the east. its too bad they still have no shot blocking though.

  • http://slamonline.com Mars

Ya’ll act like Ray Allen is your client. And by the way Ray was a Milwalkee Buck before anything. And will be remembered as a Buck forever.

  • Al29

Ray Allen will win 3 rings in Miami before retiring and getting a job in the organization. That’s 3 rings more than he would have won had he stayed in Boston

  • ItsNORV

Ray Allen is Basketball slut now!!….Wa..wa..wa…The former Mr. Shuttlesworth is a BABY!!! I honestly believe that Ray Allen still thinks he’s an All star level player! How Many 37 year old NBA players complain about “ANYTHING” in the NBA??? How is Ray Allen having issues with a teams YOUNG star player(RONDO)…??? Ray Allen, your an old man…your one of the oldest men in the NBA!!!! WoW..Whoa…When an NBA team has to worry about how a 37,38 year old man feels neglected and unwanted(but didn’t BOS offer him more money than ANYONE else??ahh yes!!)..its official,…You have to call the WA-ambulance because your dealing with a B!tch ass!

  • ItsNORV

On tha Flip side this may GOOD news for us and Lebron! You see LBJ can learn a lot from Ray Allen……Like how to SHOOT AND SHAVE HIS GOTDAMN HEAD…ahahaa!!

If the heat loses to the celtics in the playoffs next season with Ray playing ugly, He would be blamed for sabotage!

  • eZ

I could respect all the comments from the celtic organisation, coach doc, pierce, ainge whoever….if only they would mention the fact that he was virtually traded last season, has been used as trade material for the last two AND the fact that besides annointing Bradley the starter they ALREADY signed Terry, before Ray even made his final decision.
Like, yeah, how is that supposed to inspire loyalty in any player?
    That to me…is hypocrite.
Too bad we can’t watch some alternate reallity, watch Ray resign with the celtics and then get traded (to NO for Rivers son and ryan anderson?) in february with the ‘hey its a business’ comment from Ainge.
Ray did right and the celtics will truly know bitterness once they lose to miami in this years playoffs.

  • Rev

There is no loyalty in sports. Period! Avery Bradley should not have started if Ray was proclaiming to be healthy again. If and when Miami faces Boston, the Celtics are going to see what being on the other side of a Ray Allen barrage feels like. Ain’t gonna be pretty…..
