Stan Van Gundy Blasts Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins

Stan Van Gundy, who endured an ugly public fallout with his former team, lambasted Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins on an Orlando Sentinel radio show. Van Gundy was responding to Martins’ intimation that Van Gundy could not relate to players. Stan fired back, saying Martins has no knowledge, or clue, as to what he’s talking about. “’It’s a typical lack of understanding from someone who has no sports knowledge, who has never coached or played, who has never been in a lockeroom….it’s a naivete,’ Van Gundy said of Martins Monday morning on Mike Bianchi’s show on AM 740. ‘I’ll stand on the relationships with players based on the results we got. I think Alex’s comments are based on the fact that Dwight and maybe others didn’t like me…and thinking somehow that’s important.’ Van Gundy believes that the NBA is a bottom-line business and sometimes friction naturally occurs between coaches and players. He says what should matter most are results. Martins declined to comment Monday on the remarks made by Van Gundy, who has been outspoken recently about the Magic’s tumultuous season surrounding Dwight Howard’s trade demand. Van Gundy said the ‘culture and values’ instilled under former GM Otis Smith and former CEO Bob Vander Weide changed after Vander Weide retired and Martins was promoted to CEO. ‘When Bob left, it really became Alex over everything. I’ll take my share of the blame and management needs to take theirs,’ he said. ‘The Dwight thing was so big….in an effort, I guess, to make Dwight happy and everything else, we compromised a lot of the culture and values we had before that. It’s always a mistake when you compromise those things…everything goes South. It was no longer a team-first thing. It was inevitable things would not go as well.’”

Gotta say im gonna miss this cat. Honest as heck, always candid not a bad coach, just must get tiring dealing with his negativity constantly

  • tomtom

@Z hopefully you won’t have to miss him for long, i think someone smart will give him a gig soon.

Stan Van Gundy is always talking man.
The team chose Dwight because he was the main reason your team was competitive. Period. Without him, “team values” didn’t mean jack. I don’t like Dwight, but that’s the real deal.
If Stan could have coached that collection of talent without Dwight to a championship, then he would still have a job.

I always seemed confident Dwight was gonna leave, so I looked at it as Magic minus Dwight AND Stan is a lot worse than Magic minus Dwight…getting rid of a coach to try and please a player who is gonna leave anyway is as stupid as you can get

@nbk your post cracked me up and props to you for upholding the banner of Sanity and Reason in the jennings vs rondo debate

    Irving vs Rondo.
Was someone really arguing Jennings over Rondo?
    Dear god man..

    appreciate it Z

Orlando was foolish to fire him. Great coach. The organization chose Dwight and now they have neither. Great decision. I’m glad Otis Smith is gone because it seemed like he was a good guy caught up in a lot of unnecessary drama.

Orlando was crazy if they got rid of Stan to keep D12 happy, but either way, why is he still talking about this? Everyone that was involved in that situation needs to move on.

Man, Otis Smith gave Rashard Lewis $100 million and then traded his bad contract for Gilbert Arenas.
Otis Smith was part of the problem!

and the gloves are off! Stan Van is a moron for this, what future NBA owner or GM will want to hire this guy as their coach after this? And how is he taking his share of the blame like he so claims? Dude, you got fired, you aint even quit. Show some integrity Stan Van, bet you he went over there to the unemployment line right after getting axed.

Wait, was someone genuinely debating Jennings vs Rondo yesterday? I completely missed that? Who was it? I want to ridicule them…

    Okay, I can breathe again.

Stan gets asked questions. He never makes comments unless he’s asked questions. He’s an honest guy. No problem here.

  • Really

I agree with pposse. To an owner or GM, Stan is radioactive. No way he can be trusted with internal discussions. Everyone likes his honesty, however, sometimes it’s not always called for. Coaches normally follow that code if they want to keep working. It’s a players league. People pay to see players play. People buy jerseys, not mock turtle necks. Players also talk to each other. Name one “Superstar” player that would play for Stan. Redick doesn’t count, he is not a superstar or star. He’s a role player. So is Ryan Anderson. Stan will coach again, but it will not be for a contender. Two weeks before the famous “Dwight wanted me fired” media session, Stan came out and asked to be fired. Check the tape. He said “if they want to fire me, fire me. I’ve got money saved up. I’ll find something else to do.” Well he got his wish, so why is he or the media sheep who love him so upset?

Stan is just speaking the truth. Problem with Stan, it’s so hard to get that image of that mad, sweaty, little guy with the head ready to pop off his shoulders out of one’s head.

Stan Van Gundy has always had my respect. I can relate a lot to what the dude is saying and how he feels.

@Really – Yeah, sure. SVG won’t have a job next year. Right.

  • Allenp

“People buy jerseys not mock turtlenecks.” That made me chuckle.

you could tell by how he was tanned that he enjoyed coaching the magic because of being in sunny state. he shouldbe fine if some sunny state team should become available. for example the clips, if they dont start the season with some winning streaks
