Boston Celtics to Sign Darko Milicic (UPDATE)

UPDATE: What was only a rumor this morning, is now reality. Darko Milicic’s agent confirmed that his client is taking his talents to Beantown. Reports ESPN: “Milicic, after weighing strong interest from teams abroad trying to lure him back to Europe — such as perennial Spanish power Real Madrid — has committed to join the Celtics and is scheduled to be in Boston by week’s end to make the deal official. Milicic, 27, spent the past two seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves but was released in July via the amnesty clause with two seasons left on a four-year, $20 million contract signed with the Wolves in the summer of 2010. The former No. 2 overall pick — selected by the Detroit Pistons ahead of Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade in the 2003 NBA Draft — also played for Orlando, Memphis and New York before his Minnesota stint.”

According to a Croatian website, the Boston Celtics could possibly sign up free agent forward Darko Milicic. Per Sportando: “Darko Milicic, as reported by Novosti.rs, is flying to the States and he will likely sign his new contract in the NBA in the coming days. The Boston Celtics are the favorite to sign the Serbian player who turned down a three-year, $6M offer from Real Madrid in the summer because he wants to play in the NBA.”

Could there please be a team with Milicic, Kwame Brown and Adam Morisson? Maybe in Seattle? And that team win the championship in 2014? Please?

Come on, this is not a croatian website … Everything the same across the big pond, eh?

Hasheem Thabeet got picked up by OKC…is that close enough? :)

To be honest, if you limit his role to just shotblocking, he could actually allow KG to move back to the 4. So yea, it could be a good fit.

Apparently it’s done. Darko has agreed to sign with the Celtics via RealGM.

that’s a good point, the counter argument would be that the celtics kicked @ss with garnett at center last year

Done deal. He’s an improvement over Greg Stiemsma… who now plays for Minnesota. Celtics get a big body that can block shots. Won’t be nearly as raw and unpolished as Steamtrain. Stats on Darko the season b4 last read 69 games started. 5 points 2 blocks and 8 rebounds with Wolves. If he stays healthy (if KG doesn’t kill him) He has a solid shot at getting meaningful minutes with Wilcox. Jason Collins moves further down the bench.

    I’m not following but I like it…

Second Round Pick Kris Joseph looks to be the 15th player kept by Boston… but has competition from Dionte Christmas and Rob Kurz. Kurz totally flew under the radar, but much like fellow Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody… he’s a hard worker, and is capable of Scoring and rebounding. May not be enough to make the team, though.

this is one guy who still has a lot of potential, granted he’s a headcase which would probably explain his inconsistency. but let’s not forget some of the monster games he played last year against the lakers:23pts/15r/5bs/5asst. also durant called him one of the nba’s best centers. i think that he’s never found a coach who had long term faith in him and his ability.
if he gets 30/35 min a night he will surprise alot of people. he does have a outside game as well. hopefully doc wont quit on him which is what some coaches for some inexplicable reason have done such as adleman. one game he had 10 pts 6blocked shots in the first quarter he did not return until the second half, go figure?

Darko is a solid pick-up. when he’s counted on to produce big and live up to the hype of being the #2 pick, things go sideways. if you need a backup big, he’s a good get.

LOL Don’t expect anything out of Darko except when he plays against Blake Griffin. He owns Blake Griffin.

Dear Mr Ainge, I am excited by this turn of events. This off-season has been amazing. Thanks, A Fan.

Darko makes me mad… the skills and the potential is (and was always) all there. He’s good on the block, has great size, and can defend/block shots when he wants to; he’s also one of the best passing big men in the league. He should be SO much better than what his on-court production indicates. Tim Thomas anyone? Oh well… still a good pick-up by the Celtics. Doc will find a good role for him.

I love this signing as a Celtics fan, Milicic is a perfect fit next to KG, he can pass, block shots and is mobile. Yes, he’s struggled with motivation over the course of his career, but if there’s any team and any coach that can get the most out of him, it’s Doc Rivers and the Celtics. I love a good redemption story, let’s hope he finally figures it out and has a respectable end to his career.

Darko is a solid role player, having Doc and KG in his ear should be a positive influence for him, my 1-page overview of the Celtics overall:
