Chris Paul Still Bothered By Pau Gasol Head Pat Incident

Back in January, Chris Paul was visibly upset with Pau Gasol after the Lakers big man tapped CP3 on the head at the end of a hard-fought Lakers-Clippers showdown. Paul, who is on the cover of this month’s GQ, spoke about the incident in the magazine. Here’s an excerpt: “I notice I’m a few inches taller than Paul, who is 27, and it reminds me of the time last season when CP3 lost his cool: In the waning seconds of a close game, Lakers seven-footer Pau Gasol gently patted CP3 on the head after the two had exchanged words. Paul’s ensuing freak-out led SportsCenter that night. Gasol made a tepid apology; six months later, Paul is still annoyed. ‘We call that sonnin‘,’  he explains to me. ‘Like when I take Li’l Chris to the bathroom, I’ll walk with my hand on his head. That’s my son. You know what I mean? I understand that Gasol is that tall, but don’t do to me what I do to my son.’”

Im sure Julius Hodge’s testicles are still bothered by Paul punching them.

I will pay Pau through Paypal to pat Paul again.

  • bike

Anyone wanna bet on how many times he gets ‘sonnin’ this season by taller players on opposing teams?

hey that’s a short man thing.

i think cp3 is very emotional . He should move on and think about how he can advance to the second round @ least

I completely understand. I’m not your “little buddy”

  • Kevin

It’s funny cause CP3 would beat the dogs**t out of Pau Gasol too lol

  • pposse

Pau sons Kobe on a regular basis..maybe just maybe CP3 is trying to throw a subliminal shot at Kobe…naw not likely

  • shockexchange

Pau would make CP3 disappear … ya’ll see what he did to Shannon Brown didn’t you?

  • spit hot fiyah

    for real for real

  • Drig

Pau pats Kobe numerous times as well……Odom used to do it too……CP3 just took this a bit too personally….It’s what Pau is usually like

If it wasn’t Pau, the most innocent NBA players ever… Then i’d understand.
Like Bynum doing that???? I would completely agree.
But it’s Pau. We all know there was no harm in his head pat.
CP3 is free to do and think however he wants though.

I seriously can’t wait for the LAL vs LAC show downs though.
    Blake’s dunks vs Dwight’s dunks
    DeAndre and Dwight’s blocking prowess
    Kobe vs Caron/Billups
Nash’s PG play vs CP3′s PG play
Excitement written all over those match-ups.

  • Caboose

There’s an annoying (yet predictable) trend on SLAM that any anti-Lakers comment (no matter how on point it is) will get downvoted. Period.

  • pposse

thank you! NBA where mental midgetry occurs on the reg..

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

Not forgetting the head coaching maestros who make Doc Rivers’ playbook seem like doodles.

  • danpowers

true, plus in european sports like football (soccer) this stuff happens all the time without bad intentions. it only means something like “we cool even tho we are competing against each other” theyd have four to five beatings per game if people would get mad at it like cp3.

  • LakeShow

    Man… MY B….
    Mike Brown vs Del Negro…

    Gandalf vs Saruman

  • Sarah

He has a very serious lil man complex that he needs to resolve.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

It’s one thing to do it to a teammate. But Chris is a different cat. His attitude when he plays is on par with Kobe’s, if not on a higher level. Him being the smallest player on the floor adds to that intensity I’m sure. He has a right to not like something. I’d also say that bringing up the Julius Hodge thing is pointless given that it happened quite a long time ago and Chris hasn’t done anything like that since. After listening to his reaction to the pat on the head after that game, I see where he’s coming from. Pau doesn’t know Chris like that. Also, Kobe grew up in Italy, speaks multiple languages..Chris grew up in North Carolina…two different places…two different upbringings. Kobe loves soccer so he’s seen how those guys interact…I’m guessing Chris isn’t a huge fan of it. Two different dudes. Two different reactions from two different dudes.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

And you know Matt Barnes is always good for at least one knucklehead above-the-neck or below-the-belt hit on Kobe. If it happens when the Metta is on the floor, things could really get interesting.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

And I don’t know exactly how this can be seen as Chris being soft. Actually, this sets up the Lakers-Clippers matchups pretty well. Maybe a rivalry will result from it if they both stay good for a few seasons. I thought rivalries were one of the things people loved about the game in the 80s/90s. Now a guy seemingly having a personal problem with another player is seen as soft? Going to need an explanation on that.

  • pposse

so CP3 has to play soccer to understand what Pau’s intentions were?

  • LakeShow

I hadn’t even thought about that.
Barnes might ball fake Kobe again… Hilarity will ensue.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

y’all just got me so hyped for the battle of LA. Especially with the coaches, who will be playing Checkers with Chess pieces.

  • pposse

if CP took exception from an illegal screen set by Pau or some other type of dirty physical play..or took exception cause Pau hit him in the eye with a game winner then his hatred for Pau would be acceptable. Because he sonne’d him, and i remember when he did that, Pau probably did do that on purpose to piss him off makes CP3 look soft cause all of that was done after the game..

  • Guest

yes, but in europe please. that was exactly what i wanted to say… facepalm

  • danpowers

just asking gasol what it was about shouldve done it. didnt want to get on gasols’s side tho. i hate this padding n if smbdy would do that to me on court im afraid my reflex action would be a punch. cp is just exaggerating the thing. he should get this stuff out of the world in the moment it happens or shut up about it for good. if this stuff really bothers him he should talk to gasol and nobody else.

  • LakeShow

    Awesome analogy.

  • Symun Sez

Paul needs to stop being so Godamned sensitive.

  • Kasv

Did anyone else besides me count how many times CP3 got patted on the head, the rest of last season, by his own teammates. Laughed my head off every time……

  • Symun Sez

Paul needs to stop being so sensitive.

  • nbahofer

build a bridge and get over it my lil nigguh

  • pposse

i hated on Duncan for 15 years for doing this exact thing to MJ at the all star game, but MJ never looked at Duncan funny nor did he punch him in the face like i thought he would. One time i brought that up in a slam post over here and i got insulted repeatedly for it.

  • R32

CP3 is one of my favorite players but he needs to get over. Its not that serious.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    thanks man

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

How does it make him look soft? Have you watched him play since he got into the league? He’s a pretty tough competitor who will speak up when something isn’t right. I also wouldn’t call it hatred. He just felt/feels disrespected. I grew up in NC like Chris. Guys don’t go around patting each other on the head while playing ball here. He didn’t like it. He said something about it to Pau. That’s not soft at all. How can a guy who’s willing to be confrontational when he’s been disrespected be called soft?

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

  • pposse

he’s soft cause he is still talking about it, plus CP of all players in the league help make it easy for me to call any player in the NBA ‘soft’ with all of his theatrics. He pleas to the ref’s all of the time, now he is plea’ing with his fans and the rest of the world to take his side by bringing up some nonsense that no one cared about until..oh wait..yah thats right he brought it up again..soft..and he aint a little man..napolean complexes should be reserved for guys under 5’8″…CP is 6′

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Still talking about it makes him soft how? Holding onto instances where you feel disrespected in any way is soft? So Reggie Miller having issues with the Knicks and New York acting like that city is the best thing that’s happened to basketball made him soft? I wouldn’t call guys who flop or complain to referees soft. The game has changed. Players change with it. They use everything they can to get an advantage whether it’s flopping or talking with officials. That’s not soft. It’s just the way the game is played now. And compared to the guys he’s playing against, Chris is small. He’s the smallest of the best PGs in basketball. The rest are 6’2 and above. If anyone is soft here, it’s the people who have an issue with how another man feels he was treated. As if it’s up to us to tell him how he should have reacted to it or how he should feel about it now.

  • danpowers

well, i dont know why the guys have been hating on you. i just dont see the point. if jordan had the greatness to spare duncan on that one, then thats fine, too

  • Kevin

That dont make him soft. If anything you seem soft because you acting like it’s cool for a grown man to allow another grown man putting his hands on them. CP3 is just like a long line of folks who dont like other folks putting they hands on them, that’s disrespectful. You put your hand on my head during a game im swinging on you

  • Esmooth

people don’t understand how cp3 feels…. if you was from the hood you would understand…that is one most disrespectful things you can do to man

  • Kevin

Exactly. That’s just disrespectful to put your hands on another man. People on SlamOnline acting like punks

  • That Dude

I guess thats why so many young blacks die over nothing

  • Kevin

Being disrespectful will get you killed. I’ve seen people die for less

  • Max

    This conversation was great.

  • LakeShow

I would never just swing on a person that “touches” me.
I’d probably start with a “WTF are you doing?”
Then learn the persons intent behind the touch and then make a decision as to what my approach will be going forward.
Swinging immediately sounds pretty non-soft though so maybe i’ll opt for that.
Then again if your not worried about people perceptions you wouldn’t care if you looked soft and could maybe keep yourself from having to go to jail and also from physically harming another human being.
All depends on who you are…

  • roscoe

cp3 should just get it over with an pat Pau back.

  • riz

Cp3 get a grip, basketball drama aside check out this nas mix http://www.livemixtapes.com/mixtapes/18699/half_man_half_amazing.html

  • Kevin

You got your methods, I got mine. Im a small guy too, I know how CP3 feels. You put your hands on me, we fighting. That’s just how I was brought up though no e-thugging though lol

  • roscoe

    Let’s have an experiment:
Lakers have the best starting five in the league.

  • LakeShow

I’m a “big” guy. What does size have to do with mentality?
What a grown man (big or small) SHOULD do is say
“yo Pau, you putting your hands on my head… that’s not cool where I come from. Do it again, and we have issues.”
Then you wouldn’t have to be the guy that swings on someone for what appears to be a pretty silly reason.
Pretty sure Pau, or the person in question, would get the point.
If not, no ones going to be mad at you for swinging on someone after you told them that what they are doing pisses you off and not to do it again.
Like you said though… You got your own method, which you seem to like.

  • Rainman

he already advanced to the secodn round “at least”…

  • Rainman

    ITs Pau, not Bosh

  • http://twitter.com/chlodovech James Ludwig

who calls that sonnin’? is he trying to start a trend to justify him overreacting? like everytime someone touches my head I have say “don’t son me! you’re not my dad!”

  • AiRsMiTh

Maybe CP should realize that Pau isn’t from the hood. Cultures are different throughout the world and gestures don’t mean the same thing to everyone. I think it’s stupid that this is even still being talked about. I’m sure Pau will keep his hands to himself in the future.

  • Caboose

Only in the NBA could a 6 foot guy develop a Napoleon Complex.

  • fruizm

    are you best friends now??

  • wewqdqwd

    cp3 = overrated little bitch

    lakers > clippers

sacramento > everybody who cheats to win rings

  • pposse

nate dogg said it best…”the game dont chaaaaange” the players do, the game is played the way the players want the game to be played..cp3 enjoys acting and flopping like the rest of them so i am more than in my right to call him soft, a baby whatever i want to say. Sure he plays hard, and one of the best pg’s in the game right now, but its just my opinion and my opinion on anyone who wants to take the opposing pg out to dinner and a sleep over before they play a basketball game is “soft”

  • pposse

cosign what lakeshow says…i agree its not natural to be touching another grown mans heads..but i swear i see that done all the time in the nba…and even here in DC playing pick up games in the gym cats will be pulling that nonsense…that ish is nothing to be fighting over

  • Caboose

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Robert Horry isn’t your favorite player.

  • jeiko

common cp3 are you a real player or not? stop being so bothered by it..if your acting like this you are such a pussy..that’s why players in the 90′s are way better and physical than today..in today’s games only tapping is a big deal! LOL!..shame on you cp3!..

  • Drig

Whatever you said might apply if he still isn’t angsting about what happened about what, half an year ago?? By a guy who probably doesn’t even know the hood thing. This should not be classified as being competitive. Hell, as competitive as Kobe is, he doesn’t mind the usual pat on the head.

  • Ryan

I used to like Chris Paul a lot more than I do now. If you don’t want people to treat you like a little boy the first step is to grow up.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

You’re right. It is your opinion. Which doesn’t make it fact. You’re in the minority with that opinion though. Every player and coach who talks about CP3 talks about how tough he is. No one calls him soft. Their opinion is more valuable than anyone else’s.

  • http://twitter.com/natures1stgreen JaM

I’d like to see Paul grow up about this inident. He’s so mature about otheroff the court things

  • HoopFan

@disqus_j65FuvcSML:disqus don’t forget the return of Lamar Odom playing against his old squad.

  • pposse

just cause im in the minority does not mean i am wrong; this is mob mentality that is being preached right now, or so it sounds like. The facts are CP3 wines and dines tony parker, deron williams, and other friends of his, and then they sleep over his house before game day. This is just a microcosm of what is wrong in the NBA today. ALL of these players are soft (besides guys like D Rose who will use the most little things to fuel him ie: if the oppsing pg goes out on the town the night before they play him). You talk about the game is different, so the players adapt. PFFT, when you adapt to look like a bi** on national tv for the sake of the game..its not the game..its the players. Just type in ‘chris paul whines’ on google and page upon page shows up, and thats a FACT. 1,180,000 results show up.

  • pposse

even better, type in ‘Chris Paul Flop’ haha a ridiculous amount of pages show up, that prove his youthfulness, type in ‘Derrick Rose Flop’ and the whole first page on google are articles asking “should derrick rose flop more to get calls” – do you see the difference??

  • LakeShow

Honestly forgot about that. Good call. More drama. Put that one on TNT.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Have you heard about CP3 still doing that with guys he’s friends with in the league? I haven’t heard it since a few seasons ago. Not recently. He’s gotten married and had 2 children since the last time I heard of that. So I’m sure he doesn’t do that anymore. Different guys have different personalities. Usually, when your opinion is different than the opinion of guys who actually know Chris, play against him and play with him…you are wrong. In this case, it seems that you are wrong unless you somehow believe that you know Chris better than people who play with and against him. Google search results mean absolutely nothing in this case. Ask NBA players and coaches about Chris Paul.

  • pposse

why should i ask other players anything? I just told you the whole league is soft..that means none of their opinions on each other mean jack sh** to me..you just conceded that inviting players over for sleep overs was pretty lame..just cause he stopped doing that doesnt mean that he is less of a lame now. I don’t need to know CP at all, im sure he is a great person he is a good role model…but players like Gary Payton, John Stockton, Zeke, would all handle CP. The problem with the league nowadays is that they forget about the mental aspect in the sport and rely too much on their physical abilities. I am almost %100 positive if i ask the coaches without cameras on they would tell me that the ballers these days are mental midgets compared to their forefathers. I would have to be someone the coaches trust tho for them to reveal that to me, they won’t dog a whole generation without some assurance i wouldnt make a public article about it..

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

They forget about the mental aspect? Is attitude not a mental aspect? Is drive not a mental aspect? Is having a killer instinct not a mental aspect? You’re just not making sense now.

  • Jazzy

This is too funny…CP3 doesn’t want to be treated like a boy but he is behaving exactly like a five year-old. LOL. Grow up man.

  • alamo

    CP3 aint gettin a championship ring ever…………..!
