Doc Rivers Wants the Boston Celtics to Hate the Miami Heat

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The Miami Heat, the defending NBA champions, have somehow managed to fly under the radar during the offseason. You can largely thank the reloaded Los Angeles Lakers for that.

Doc Rivers isn’t losing focus on what the true enemy of the Boston Celtics is, however. The head coach wants his team focusing all of its energry — and hatred — on the fellas in South Beach.

From Celtics Blog (via YouTube user TheFabEmpire):

“Honestly, I don’t care about the Lakers,” Rivers said. “My honest thought as a coach right now … I have my eye squarely on Miami. I come up to my players during the year — they’re in the facility now — I bring up Miami every single day to them. I want them to hate them. I want them to beat them. That’s got to be our focus.”

“I think the Lakers are better,” Rivers continued. “I’m actually not one that thinks they’re way better. The guy they traded, (Andrew) Bynum, we struggled to guard him. Dwight (Howard) is a great player, but we’ve guarded him pretty well. Offensively, the (Steve) Nash part is different. I look at them and wonder how that’s going to work. I hear they’re going to run the Princeton offense, which I want to see the ball move, I want to see Kobe (Bryant) keep moving the ball. But it’ll be interesting. They’re really good.”

Miami has eliminated Boston from the Playoffs the last two seasons, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who would argue that the result would be the different should those teams meet in the postseason again this year.

Hating the Heat won’t be a problem for the Celtics — they’re beyond that at this point, or at least should be. Beating them is an entirely different story.

I think we’re all waiting to see if Kobe will keep the ball moving. Ray Allen choosing Miami over Boston along with them losing to Miami the last 2 postseasons will be enough for them to hate those guys. But if they couldn’t beat them before, they’re definitely not beating them now.

  • danpowers

i love doc for that. should be an emotional season series to watch

As a Miami Heat fan, I like Doc. I totally agree with him on Howard not being an upgrade of Bynum. But Nash can make a big difference in LA team.

  • danpowers

true, howard is just a defensive upgrade. nash is the big update because he saves bryant from being bryant. when gasol and howard need to get the ball, they will get it down low. bryant should also benefit from nash by getting more open shots and easy layups as a cutter. will just be interesting to see how the lakers will be able to deal with premiere perimeter scorers defensively.

Hope they beat the heat in the playoffs if they meet. Heat will not repeat!!!!!

  • BoriKinG HeaT

    Miami “WILL” repeat!!!

  • Datkid

i disagree… i think howard is an upgrade overall. better passer, better on pick and rolls, can post up just as well. plus the defensive boost.

  • MUBWAR

    ain’t no ? about it

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FX56N5NUXOQLMIFSJOOTICGG3A Pat

OK..i guarantee boston will not beat miami in the playoffs now…why? “Hate” just does’t work effectively..hatred is a state of fear…the mind is not clear enuf like that…need a clear mind to play your best

  • danpowers

i know that howard is underrated as a passer but bynum is still the better passer. bynum is the best center in the league offensively while howard is the best center defensively. n both arent bad at the respectively other ends neither. i think we will see bynum dominate down low this season as the sixers first option, his numbers, also assists, will increase. howard played slightly more assists so far, coz he had more positions than bynum. this should change this season.

That video had me cracking up.

  • Drig

As a Laker fan who saw Bynum struggle many a times with doubles and bad decision making at times on the offensive end with the ball in his hands, I politely disagree. Well, that’s one thing where Kobe’s influence shows…..

  • danpowers

that will get better as he matures and we should see it this season by him. dont forget bynums age. plus he put up 1,4apg with 2,5tos while howard put up 1,9apg with 3,5tos. i dont say bynum could become a vlade divac post passer, just sayin that howard aint that neither. and yes youre right, playing next to kobe might not be the best thing for a big like bynum. howard will be in a better situation now that they got nash on board. anyway, the comparison between these two pivots will be quite interesting from now on. cant wait for the season to begin

  • Jordan

    Hope the heat repeat

    Thank you master Yoda.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Dwight is still better than Bynum offensively even if his post moves aren’t as polished. Bynum is nowhere near as mobile and doesn’t get to the line as much (even though Dwight’s FT shooting is putrid). Bynum has never put up better scoring numbers than Dwight. Before we proclaim him to be the #1 offensive center, let’s see what he does as the first option on the Sixers. DeMarcus Cousins is already better than he is offensively. IMO.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Okay… “will be better.”

  • YoungBryant

I love this article…Its a personality that all teams should adapt! I disagree with him on Howard/Bynum becasue Howard never had the luxury of having a GREAT 2 guard with him. Everyone adapt that Rondo/Kobe/KG attitude I hate everyone but my team #KillerMind

  • LakeShow

Yeah Bynum’s an awful passer.. lol

  • Redd

    LOL

By all reports lately, it would appear that not one team in the league is worried about the Lakers. Even the Bobcats are like, “Hey, they look good on paper but they have to come out and beat us. They may be stacked and all but they haven’t accomplished anything.”

This slam site most informative. I enjoy the comments very much. I hope I do not lose my cubicle work by reading this site. My supervise is geeting suspecious, I think.

  • Junior Taylor

The Celtics have hated any LeBron-led team for years now.

  • LakeShow

Just keep sipping that black tea and he’ll think everything is coo.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Howard is a much better defender than Bynum. He has proven that he can score 22 points on 13 shots. More importantly, Howard did his offensive damage on a team with much less talent than the one Bynum played on, and he did it without all the injury and attitude problems. Howard could still have back issues, but other than that, he’s a vast improvement over Bynum.
Doc had trouble guarding Bynum because they also had to deal with Gasol and Kobe. He wouldn’t have had that sort of trouble guarding Bynum if he was surrounded by the team Howard was surrounded by.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Bynum is not anywhere remotely close to a better passer than Howard. Infact, Bynum is terrible. Especially out of double teams.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Bynum is only one year younger than Dwight. They both came into the League out of high school. Bynum in 2005-2006 and Howard in 2004-2005. People keep giving Bynum the “youth” pass, while refusing to do the same for Dwight. Maybe that’s because our expectations are so much higher for Dwight.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    THANK YOU!

  • pposse

    haha that was too raw!

  • pposse

get your ‘alt tab’ game on pt..the supervisor wont notice a thing!

  • 23

I think the hatred stems from a sort of fear. They’ve always felt threatened by Lebron and the way he owns the media, and now owns the league. I just go back to kg trying to intimidate Lebron, then Lebron laughing in his face. Easily one of my favorite Lebron moments ever.

  • pposse

howards assist prowess is overblown bc of the system he played in. One man down low, four guys spacing around the three pt line. The Lakers never had that system, nor will they with Dwight over there. If Dwight proves he can make good hi lo passes/decisions then and only then should we believe he is the superior passer..

  • 23

As intimidating as Kobe is, i think Dwight, pau and nash don’t necessarily ooze fear. The roster is very talented. The most talented in years imo. But there’s a difference between fear and talent. After the lakers knock a few heads they’ll be shown more respect. Its easy to talk trash in off seasons.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You made this comment realizing Bynum played his whole career except one season in the triangle right…..or obviously not.

  • pposse

i did. and i never said that bynum was a great passer, plus i should have italicized ‘prowess’ bc that was sarcasm. I don’t think either one has proven to be a good passer…so IF Dwight can actually make a hi/low decision/passes then he will be the superior passer out of the two

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Look Bynum comes from the best or second best passing system in the NBa with the most teamwork Oriented coach the league has maybe ever seen. And he is still a putrid passer from the post. Dwight on the other hand is leaving a stagnant offense and will finally be surrounded by legitimate threats. It’s only plausible that Dwight will continue to be the better passer and considerably better overall player.

  • Dagger

I agree that Howard is a much better defender than Bynum and a better fit with these Lakers. That said:

    1. In terms of scoring last year Howard’s stats are almost identical to Bynum’s. Per 36 minutes Howard averages .3 more PPG. His FG% is less than .2% higher. Neither player had the ball as often as they should, but when he received the ball inside Bynum was better at posting up and is a MUCH better free throw shooter (69% to 49%), which is huge at the end of games. Howard is better at cutting to the net, and he’ll get a ton of lobs from Nash – so he fits better with these Lakers. But remember, Bynum is 2 years younger than Dwight (he’s 24; Dwight’s 26). Barring injury in a couple years Bynum will almost certainly be a better offensive player than Dwight is right now.
    2. Bynum’s attitude problems are well-documented, although remember that his actual teammates rarely had anything bad to say about him in recent years. Even Kobe, who’s not exactly easy on his teammates. Meanwhile, how is Bynum’s immaturity so often mentioned on this site while Howard’s attitude issues get a free pass when we compare the two? Howard single-handedly sabotaged his team this past year. He’s also a clown on the court and he’s frequently clashed with his coach. Don’t be so sure that Howard’s attitude is better than Bynum’s; if anything, mixing his personality with Kobe’s in that locker room could be trouble.

  • T-man

    HAHAAHAHA!!!

  • danpowers

sure, but this is not a negative thing. that is like to ennoble dwight. people can say what they want about his limited offensive arsenal or his immature way to handled the trade-issue. that doesnt change that he is a dominant big man and still the best in the league. bynum has the potential to surpass him, if healthy. just nobody knows if bynum really lives up to that, we will see this year. he is more versatile on offense than dwight. but dwight is still a force on offense, too, no doubt. didnt want to take that off him.

  • Datkid

My thoughts exactly Teddy. Offense is more than just “post moves” it’s passing, p&r and cutting all things howard is better at.

  • danpowers

which is one reason why i thought his assist numbers were lower than they couldve been.

  • danpowers

how do we know if dwight is really better on offense? if you take his numbers, you have to state that he was the first option on offense while bynum was the second or third option on his team. not to mention the ball hog bryant taking away shots from his pivot supporting cast. dwight wont suffer from that by having nash running the point now. bynum wont have that problem neither. so this is the season we will finally see who is the better pivot offensively. defensively thats no contest. and yup, DMC could dethrone dwight as the best pivot in the league, talent-wise. the problem seems to be that he is one of the cases in which the bad-brain would never let him show that. i really hope the kid proves me wrong with that

  • danpowers

    true true

  • Datkid

DEFINITELY not. this is the worst team they’ve had in years. if they were going to beat them, they would’ve 2 years ago

  • danpowers

nash will simply stop giving the ball to kobe if kobe wont keep it moving ;)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

exactly, if Bynum were a competent passer, or was going to become one before he starts to regress, he would have done it already. Look what Shaq became as a passer once Phil came aboard. And Shaq used to refuse to pass unless he KNEW he was getting it back. Then with Phil, he became one of the top 5 post passers in the league.
