Dwyane Wade: Lakers ‘Have to Make It Work’

Dwyane Wade knows the rewards of joining forces with fellow superstars and forming a Super-Team. But he also understands the difficulties that come along with such a decision—his Miami Heat were quickly dismissed in the 2011 NBA Finals, getting somewhat of a reality check before coming back stronger than ever to finally with the Championship. When asked about the newly renovated Los Angeles Lakers earlier this week, Wade said that while everything may look great on paper, making it work is an entirely different animal. Via FoxSportsFlorida.com: “‘They’ll be great, but they have to make it work,’ Wade said with a tone that sounded something like a warning — perhaps because he’s speaking from experience. ‘Some people figure it out right away, some people take till mid-season to figure it out and some take until the next year if they figure it out. Obviously for them, they need to be successful as they want to be, they’re going to have to do it right away.’ But as Wade could well testify, that’s easier said than done. ‘There are a lot of teams anxious and waiting on the season to start, and they’re not necessarily concerned whether (the Lakers) are going to figure it out or not,’ Wade said. ‘They’re worried about themselves, but we understand that they’re going to be a very good team, and we’re ready for the challenge.’”

It’s funny how narratives develop. The Miami Heat’s 2010-2011 was not a failure. They made it to the freaking NBA Finals! They weren’t as good as the following year, but I think they figured a lot of stuff out. It’s a better story if Lebron suffered defeated and humiliation before his triumphant 2012 emergence. It’s just not the truth.

  • spit hot fiyah

he did suffer defeats sice they lost, and some humilation since they celebrated before the season even started, but i agree that it was made to seem like a much bigger failure than it really was

i don’t like the new commenting system.

  • MUBWAR

lbj wade bosh didnt win the 1st year. that was a dissapointment

I’m pretty sure Kobe knows all about overcoming adversity. He has played on super teams before, this is nothing new.

LOL i would not compare the Heat team to the Lakers by any means. If it wasn’t for Lebron Miami still wouldn’t have won the championship. LA has a true PG in Nash and a true center in Howard. Gasol and Kobe will fill it up offensively and we have Jamison coming off our bench. NBA fans are about to find out this this is going to be one of the best teams to EVER play the game. Age doesn’t matter w/ these guys, they’re going to run over competition oh lord.

  • JML-G

Lakers stans make me hate the team smh

  • Nicolas Fleming

On paper, the Lakers are the best team 2007 has ever assembled.

  • omphalos

Yeah this is a much easier fit than Wade and Lebron, Dwight plays inside, Pau floats around, Nash creates, Kobe scored. Done. Figured out. No redundancy in skill-sets anywhere on the roster, all of these guys can contribute without the ball in their hands.

    i don’t like house cats.

  • Eldon Khorshidi

    any specific reason?

  • Redd

You’re an idiot, we said the Miami’s big 3 would beat the Bulls record. Stop it, and now Kobe’s legacy of being compared to Jordan is dead. Kobe will eventually be compared to Lebron if Lebron keeps winning.

  • RedRum

LA is in a different situation that Heat. LA’s pieces fit, they have a pass first 3-point threat pg and a defensive orientated post player. In Miami they had a team were essentially Wade and Lebron were the same player. LA is in a similar situation with the Celtics, where KG and Allen fitted perfectly with Pierce.

  • Junior Taylor

Even though Kobe and PP have a similar attacking style (one-on-one), PP is by far the better catch and shoot player. LA’s pieces fit slightly better than MIA’s but not as good as Bos’s.

  • Junior Taylor

I thought it would generate better/more convos but it has done the opposite.

    THE SUMMER IS ALWAYS SLOW.

  • Double J

It’s clogged up and messy, if we want to go back and read the early comments, we have to scroll to the bottom, which means we typically have to read the rebuttal before the claim, that is if someone doesn’t directly reply to a post.

  • Double J

seriously, even despite the summer we at least saw numerous debates over various things, no matter how idiotic or “troll-like” they became. the comments used to be fun to cruise into and check out

  • Double J

what?! dude… I love house cats, big fat fluffy ones are the bestest.

it’ll pick up again during the top 50. you can go back and look at every summer from like late July to the middle of September. People always complaining that the comment section is too slow. This year, SLAM just so happened to institute the new system during the height of the slow period, so now people are attributing one to the other, when really, they are unrelated.

  • Dutch Rich

co-sign. Best starting 5 ever. This squad got crazy hardware too. Scary

see the discussion tab? you can sort them so the newest are on top.

  • ZOGS

OKAY RELAXXXX DWADE… STEVE NASH ISNT GUNNA MESS UP THE CHEMISTRY, AND DWIGHT IS BASICALLY IS AN IMPROVED BYNUM, AND ANTAWN JAMISON IS TOO OLD TO OPEN HIS MOUTH AND EXCERISE AT THE SAME TIME.

  • FuTrue

Call me when Nash can check Westbrook and MWP can check Durant.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

This all hinges on Kobe. Will he share the ball or insist on still getting his shots? That’s it. No need for him to shoot more than 17 or 18 shots with this squad. 23 or 24 a game. Hopefully, this new offense puts Gasol on the block instead of having him shooting 3s or too many jumpshots. Gasol is their best post player. Most skilled big man in basketball.

  • Double J

fortunately enough my cat just tends to scratch the shizz out of me, leaves the home alone aside from getting fur everywhere

  • Double J

ya i been excited about that 50 best this year… we know 1 and 2 but beyond that it could be anyone’s game with dwight and drose suffering there injuries. i’m gonna laugh so hard when ya’ll get mad kobe is ranked in the top 4

  • Double J

thanks man, i guess you aren’t so bad

  • roscoe

  • roscoe

losing in the finals tarnished the Bron bron legacy not to mention the story. What is wrong with our society that ppl think losing is okay? Damn ppl, wake up!

  • roscoe

failure is failure peeps. It is big to fail.

  • roscoe

    & a failure.

  • roscoe

    Westbook = turnover city

  • roscoe

just curious… what say u if Bron bron never wins another ring?

  • FuTrue

Westbrook = Score on Nash city

  • Redd

then Kobe should be compared to TD.

  • roscoe

    :/

  • Max

    Yall cats suck..
Mine just plays with everything, sleeps, eats and cuddles.

  • Max

I think it wouldn’t be as big as a failure as it was if Lebron didn’t just avg 15pts, but with Lebron you can never know.

  • Irishmick

Despite his age Steve Nash is someone the heat sage yr 1 didn’t have. Dwights gona have a break out season that is if kobe can handle being the #2
