Atlanta Hawks Won’t Offer Josh Smith a Contract Extension This Season

The relationship between the Atlanta Hawks and Josh Smith has been quite positive of late, and according to GM Danny Ferry, the team will look to re-sign the forward once he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer. Per the AJC: “Josh Smith is entering the final year of his current contract with the Hawks but it is ‘unlikely’ that he will be re-signed before the end of the upcoming season. The forward is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Don’t panic yet Hawks fans. Under the rules of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, it could be advantageous for Smith, and to some degree the Hawks, to wait on a new contract. In simplest terms, if Smith re-signs with the Hawks before June 30, the extension can be for only a maximum of three years. If he waits until after his contract expires, he can re-sign for up to five years. According to Hawks general manager Danny Ferry, Smith and his agents have said he would like to remain in Atlanta. ‘I’ve been clear that I value Josh as a player,’ Ferry said. ‘He has worked hard this summer and I believe he is going to have great season. I’ve been in contact with his representatives. Josh and his representatives have been clear that he is excited about the direction of the team and wants to be part of the future in Atlanta. That being said, I don’t expect the contract situation to be resolved until next summer.’”

I know a lot has to happen in their favor…but theortically the Hawks could be pretty good. If Jeff Teague improves along with Josh Smith and Al Horford I don’t see why they won’t have a shot to get out of the 2nd round. Do I think it will happen? No. All Im saying is it could.

Josh Smith has improved every year statistically and has matured as a basketball player. (less three pointers, even though I think he’s been blackballed from being an all-star) He has consistently been the best player on the Hawks, and he brings it every night. But that being said, I want to see him go somewhere else, where he can contend for a title Somewhere like the Bulls. Here’s hoping.

Just curious why you believe he is “blackballed”?

Great! Josh Smith can sign with Brooklyn Nets as a free agent and reunite with Joe Johnson.

Smith has been been best player on the Hawks last season. Al Horford goes down basically for the entire season. You got Joe “MAX” Johnson being Joe: Scoring in bunches and displaying the game that coaches have come to expect and appreciate. (expect in crunch time. iso Joe) But like I said before Josh Smith brings it every night and does everything for the Hawks. Scoring, rebounding, blocking shots, and steals. He is also know as a stat sheet stuffer. The Hawks record wise has been one of the best teams in the eastern conference. It basically came down to him and Paul Piecre. Piecre came out the gates very slow last season but was playing great ball up to the all star break. Thus the coaches voting him in.

Josh is the best Hawk. Why wouldn’t you want to lock him down?
