Metta World Peace’s Goal is for the Lakers to Win 73 Games Next Season

According to the always provocative Metta World Peace, the revamped Los Angeles Lakers – a team he’s very confident about — will be taking aim at the Chicago Bulls’ legendary 72-10 regular season record next year. From ESPN (via SRI): “What he thinks about the team possibly not having Dwight Howard at the start of Training Camp: ‘We definitely want to beat the Bulls record and go 73-9, that’s definitely something that I want to do. Whoever is out there at the beginning of the season then we gotta get it. It’s as simple as that. We just have to go get it. (Host: So that Bulls record is something you’re thinking about?) No question. You try to snatch records before you leave this earth. You gotta try to do a lot of great things so it’s definitely a goal. With Dwight Howard, (Steve) Nash, Kobe (Bryant), myself, Pau (Gasol) and then (Antawn) Jamison and a lot of great additions it’s something that’s possible.’ What it will take for the Lakers to overtake the Thunder: ‘I think people still have to go through the Lake Show. I think everything goes through the Lake Show. We had a bad season last year. If we don’t turn the ball over in a couple of games then we’re up 3-1 in that Oklahoma series, actually up 3-2, going back LA so with that said confidence remains.’ What he thinks the Lakers are missing: ‘Nothing. We feel great. I saw Jamison today and people forget that he is one of the best offensive rebounders in the game, he has the best touch out of everybody in the NBA, he has the best touch out of all the big men in the game so you figure a guy like that and then we have some great players off the bench so we’re confident, I trust in myself and I trust in my teammates most importantly.’”

Someone was just saying something about the ones who should be talking the least talking the most…

  • JML-G

MWP 4 MVP bryant howard nash whooooo?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

In before the Bulls sacrilage brigade arrives….has all the ingredients for a 500+ thread: MJ vs Kobe, Bulls Vs Lakers and the often forgotten but epic matchups of Dwight vs Longley, Jodey Meeks vs Steve Kerr and Jamison Vs Kukoc.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

remember when everyone got mad at the Heat for talking about how many titles they want to win?
anyways, my biggest issue with this is, MWP is acting like the Lakers are walking into this next season as the best team in the league….when really, they still aren’t “definitely” the best team in their conference.

I for instance, believe they are “better” than OKC, but I think OKC will beat them in a series because of the match ups.

  • danpowers

maybe the difference is that MWP didnt jump on a stage like a backstreet boy to tell it on the mountain. the other thing is when he says stuff like that i just have to laugh so thats pretty entertaining

  • Junior Taylor

I love how Artest nonchalantly puts his name alongside KB, Howard, Gasol and Nash like he is going to have the same impact as those cats.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ok? i didn’t defend what the Heat did dude. just pointing out the double standard people have about players and their bold predictions.

  • danpowers

come on, these guys arent comparabel. mwp is just amusing, thats it. as long as the heatles dont send greetings to their psychatrists during their championship press conference they aint playin in the same league.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

oh so because LeBron and them are better players their optimism is less justifiable? Or because MWP is seen as a looney person his optimism is less serious? They are all NBA basketball players, who are serious about what they are saying. Whether you personally believe the difference is justifiable doesn’t change anything. It’s still a double standard. The reason you make up to justify it, is just an excuse.

  • tomtom

I think that you have to take whatever he says with a pinch of salt. I really like the guy..but come on man, that’s a crazy statement. I think the references to the Miami Heat street party and pre-season championship declaration being in any way similar are stupid. LA only throws parades in the spring.

  • 23

That was for locals. But of course once espn gets a hold of it, they can manipulate the minds of certain people. No Miami fan took it seriously, they just took it as the new stars attempting to pump some life into the stale Miami fans. Lebron and wade were laughing the whole time. It was supposed to be a fun event for season ticket holders. Just good fun. Lebron joked about Riley playing alongside them, yet people hold Lebron to that “guarantee” about 8 rings or whatever? Smh dumb people

  • danpowers

no i mean it. mwp is crazy. like really crazy, weird. people would probably dislike him in the same way as the heat if he wouldve done something like a show on stage the heat way. come on man, grown man, not even boys should ever do that. i think this show stuff never happened before for a reason and we should hope that the basketball world will spare us with that in the future. what the heat did there was just disgusting and is not in the same league with dropping controversal / bold / stupid / confident / optimistic / whatever statements to the media in a regular interview. no excuse needed sir. just not the same thing, sport, stadium, league, sport. comparing any players statement to jumping on stage with a boyband show to dropping comments in the media is like comparing apples and pears

  • danpowers

as i said – however it was meant it never happened b4 for good reasons and – if any god exists – wont happen again as long as we are alive.

  • Redd

    His D will be important.

Metta makes me nervous when he talks out his ass like this.

  • Redd

With all this talk he’s just making more pressure for them plus he could potentially upset a few guys so there may be locker room issues.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i don’t know what the fuck you are talking about. they didn’t have the stupid ass concert to make predictions. maybe you don’t remember the thing? LeBron responded to a question when he said how many titles they wanted to win. He didn’t dance on the stage and then just start spouting off about trying to win 8 titles.
    - Either way, The stupid fucking concert is not even relevant in what i’m saying, AT ALL. I am not, in any way, defending it. So please, stop, i don’t care to read your opinion on that thing, we all agree.
    - My point wasn’t just about Artest, it’s about all the players that make predictions, people have a double standard of villainizing just the players they don’t like, while letting the same type of stupid prediction go on without a hitch from others. .This is just another example of a player saying something completely arrogant, and people passing it off because he’s not as much of a polarizing figure. (If LeBron were a crazy person like Peace, or Peace wasn’t crazy and was more like LeBron, this situation would be the same, people would hate on LeBron for his prediciton…even though he’s crazy, or they wouldn’t mind what MWP is saying, even though he’s sane, because he’s not LeBron – or Kobe – or someone else)..It’s that cut and dry.

  • Marcos Garcia

so much talk yet training camp is still like 12 days away -___-

  • shockexchange

MWP has carved out that “Charles Barkley” lane for himself – he can get away with saying and doing what other players cannot. In 45 minutes this story will be all but forgotten.

  • danpowers

what the fuck i am talking about? about this bullshit here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD9lZflXsgU cant we just leave it as shouldnt have done that, received enough criticism, its all good now?
you just asked about something and i replied. that if would should could doesnt matter. mwp IS crazy and james aint. at least they appear like this to the public and this is by what we judge them – or better their images. we dont know any of them personally. saying people criticise mwp because of this or that is just your opinion / guess. there is no evidence to that. i just think bron deserved some of the harsh response he received from the basketball world for some time but that people should also start to acknowledge his change and give him the credit he deserves. back to mwp: it stays simple. crazy people are often good for a laugh. sane people are often taken responsible for what they say and do. edit: it would be double standards if lebron was as crazy as mwp and people would respond differently. or its just because the closer a person gets to greatness the more he finds himself under a microscope. thats no double standard at all because then that player is on a different popularity, responsibility and performance level.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

did i ask you about your opinion about the decision concert? did i not say i agree with you completely about that stupid fucking thing? did i not just outline why i don’t care about if you view one as crazy and the other as not? did i not just say, it’s not only about MWP and his arrogant prediction but predictions in general? Why the fuck are you responding with that? If you don’t agree with my POV fine, but stop wasting your time typing the same damn thing over and over and over. i never said LeBron didn’t deserve whatever response he got. I am in no way shape or form defending LeBron, or MWP, or talking shit about either of them.
Why do I have to keep repeating myself to you?
Here I’ll just copy and paste, ” My point wasn’t just about Artest, it’s about all the players that make predictions, people have a double standard of villainizing just the players they don’t like, while letting the same type of stupid prediction go on without a hitch from others. .This is just another example of a player saying something completely arrogant, and people passing it off because he’s not as much of a polarizing figure. (If LeBron were a crazy person like Peace, or Peace wasn’t crazy and was more like LeBron, this situation would be the same, people would hate on LeBron for his prediciton…even though he’s crazy, or they wouldn’t mind what MWP is saying, even though he’s sane, because he’s not LeBron – or Kobe – or someone else)..It’s that cut and dry.”
If you respond to me again about this same subject, that’s what I’m going to say back to you. So if you need to just keep responding to that then that’s how this conversation will go. You will just respond to the exact same thing, over and over and over again.

  • danpowers

    calm down man

  • LakeShow

  • roscoe

The locker room will not be an issue.

  • roscoe

MWP’s words don’t make me nervous, but standing near one of MWP’s elbow would.

  • roscoe

@23: No Haole’s brah. Deez waves r no 4 u brah. U go back 2 hotel Haole & no surf here brah.

  • roscoe

Actually, if someone wanted to “rival” Bron bron dey could take da opportunity 2 mock him at a new team event by doing the same thing and I bet alot of peeps wud dig it.

  • danpowers

lets jus all hope that this wont happen lol

  • shutup

    Having a bad day? grab a snickers…..

  • roscoe

good points… imo the lakers match up well. The one advantage I wud point out is that this LAL team has not had a chance to play together.
I can’t wait to see Nash playing next to future HOFs.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Just because I’m telling to stop doesn’t mean I’m not calm. Infact, if I was anymore calm I’d be in acoma

  • Teddy-the-Bear

World Peace vs. Rodman, hell yes.

  • GP

Stop swearing to get your point across, we get it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yes ah Masta. Or no. That’s how I talk. I swear. Literally.

  • Joshua Symons

Impossible. how old do you think kobe is? 28? lol. nash is 40 your old, dwight will carry the team? kidding me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

great!!! metta is talkin smack and now kb is going to have to bail this team out as usual and be exhausted by may!! good job metta..zip it!

  • Laumol

They still miss Phil Jackson to go 73-9 this year.

  • Dagger

This guy is in the news way too often lately, and it’s almost never with good stuff. The Lakers would be infinitely more likable with Grant Hill and without Ron Artest.

  • flight 9

I hope they win 75 games and lose in the first round. I still hate the HEAT tough!

  • Mackenzie

    Metta being Metta

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

So apparently the new comment system allows full-blown swearing. That’s dangerous.

  • http://twitter.com/whitehoteboy CCT

Whoever said that the Heat held a “concert” when they introduced Wade, Bron and Bosh is on some moron sh*t.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Concert, Party, whatever you wanna call it. You know what I was talking about.

  • http://twitter.com/whitehoteboy CCT

    That was you? Jesus.

Soop, it WAS a party….big fuc*ing deal, right? The Heat pulled off maybe the greatest fee-agent signing’s in NBA history. There was reason to celebrate and thus far, they’ve lived up to the hype and have already validated their “misgivings” of being too happy, by winning a title.
If people took it as being braggartish….well, f*ck ‘em. That’s what successful teams do. The Yankees, the Celtics, the Lakers, the Cowboys, the Steelers, over the years, all of these teams /mademake garish moves to re-seed their rosters and are beloved or hated for it.

The Heat aren’t at that level yet, but they have built a formula for winning and if another title are two are won with this squad, they’ll have proven that their way works.

I mean, sure, they could have had a simple introduction press conference for them, but damn man, I was there and that place was electric….moreso than it was for the 2006 Finals games. Miami fans are fckle, we all know that, but you put a good product on the field or the court and Miami fans are just as passionate as the next team’s fans.

Bron signing wasn’t like a Rudy Gay signing….this changes the course of the NBA’s landscape. It was a major move. People that still don’t get that or just lost in the shuffle.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Cliff, I totally understand the celebration. I just hate HOW they did it. Or that they televised it. Either way, it was (or seemed) over the top. If they did it, without LeBron doing “the decision” it would probably be viewed totally differently. But with everything that happened in a matter of a week, it just seemed like too much. I have no ill feelings towards the Heat or LeBron or anyone for that party thing, I just didn’t like it. And again, that probably has more to do with the events that led up to the thing.
The whole, LeBron saying how many titles they WANTED to win, that didn’t bother me at all. he was merely answering a question. If he didn’t say something liek that, next to the players he was next too, then I would have had an issue.

  • LakeShow

Uhhh… Do you need to watch that video again? Never defend that video.
That would be like me defending Kobe’s fruity little photo ops.

  • LakeShow

    Super fucking dangerous.
    Sorry had too :)

  • LakeShow

Stop not swearing to get your point across!

  • http://twitter.com/whitehoteboy CCT

Uhhh….no, I was there. I don’t switch up teams cause mine hasn’t left town though, so you’re not a good example of a true fan to argue with.

  • LakeShow

Were you the one giving LBJ an in the air BJ while he was thrusting his hips like Elvis in ’65?

  • robb

    Shut up Ron, please…

  • kpaul7

    NBK bro you’re pretty stubborn

No one takes MWP seriously. He has legitimate mental issues. Nothing the man says should be taken too seriously

If Lebron was diagnosed with a mental disorder said stuff like this no one would have cared about anything he said:

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

oh if only Metta actually had mental health issues. Seeing a psychiatrist, doesn’t mean you have a mental disorder.
People care more about what LeBron says because LeBron is the best player in the world. It has nothing to do with mental health. Ron Artest was taken seriously when he was in Indiana and an MVP candidate.
And like i said, i don’t have a problem with what he said, just like i don’t have a problem with what LeBron said. My issue is with people’s contradictory nature.
