Vinny Del Negro Says There’s No Urgency for Clippers to Give Him an Extension

LA Clippers head coach Vinny Del Negro admits that he wishes his contract wasn’t hanging over his head going into the season, but claims that it’s not urgent for him to get an extension done. Per the LA Times: “In May, the Clippers picked up the option on Del Negro’s contract, giving him a third season as coach for about $2 million. Still, Del Negro, 46, enters the new season in the final year of his contract. Sitting in his office Wednesday afternoon, Del Negro leaned back in his chair and said of his situation: ‘I think there’s always pressure, but I think that’s a position that you want to be in. My goal coming here was to help change the environment, change the culture and change the direction of the organization.’ Last season the Clippers went 40-26 in the regular season and Del Negro took them to the second round of the playoffs for just the second time since the franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1984. All signs point to Del Negro’s leading the Clippers to back-to-back playoff appearances. If that happens, it will be for just the second time during the 32 years Donald Sterling will have owned the team. The Clippers last reached the postseason in consecutive years in 1992 and 1993 when Larry Brown was coach. Del Negro said there has been ‘a little bit’ of discussion about his contract extension, but there is ‘no sense of urgency for either side’ to get a deal done right away. ‘Of course, I wish it was under maybe a different situation,” Del Negro said. ‘But I was on a one-year deal last year and I’m still here and enjoying myself and believe in what we’re doing. I think all those things work themselves out over time.’”

.There is no urgency because there is no reason.
.Given Donald Sterling’s Career as an owner, I wouldn’t be surprised if he extends VDN on the cheap. .Chris Paul is who has lead them to the playoffs.

The clips aren’t going very far with Vinnie as coach. They gotta ditch him if they want to be legit contenders.

Let him expire then sign Jerry Sloan. He worked with one of the best PG and PF combos ever.

seems like a nice dude, but a new coach would be nice

    blake & cp3= malone & stockton?

That isn’t what I’m saying. With Griffin’s raw talent the potential is there, if he rounds out his game over the next couple of seasons. They may not be considered to that level but Sloan would still have a lot to offer them individually as well as being a regular play-off coach for the rest of the team.

I was more meaning the blueprint of a star PG and a star PF surrounded by other solid pieces. He would bring a lot to the organization.

Ha ha my bad. Is he even looking for a team though? Utah is small town right? LA might not appeal to him. I’m in New Zealand and my US geography is a bit rubbish.

Why should anyone respect Vinny Del Negro?

yes sir, utah is a small market, he does seem like a guy who loves a small market. although i can see him making a comeback, he’s been coaching for so long don’t see him leaving forever

vdn is a quality coach & a leader.
cp3 threw his @ss under the bus last year in a couple post game interviews & when the LAC came out & shit a brick like a school girl in the playoffs he calmed their @ss’ down & led them to a quality performance no matter what anyone has to say. In the moment vdn led his team like a quality coach does.
I dig cp3 but don’t kid urslf cp3 is running this team as the GM & coach & that shit ain’t going 2 last. Guaranteed. if spolestra made it work with riles in MIA vdn is capable imo from a coaching standpoint, not personell standpoint.
Btw, I’m not sure vdn is the answer, but he has earned my respect after being dumped by CHI coming to the crap of the league LAC and doing a good job.
