Dwight Howard Fires Back at Shaq: ‘Your Time is Up’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Shaquille O’Neal, in his role as television analyst, continues to push forward his silly idea that Dwight Howard is anything but the NBA’s best center. O’Neal — who has a confounding history of belittling Howard at virtually every opportunity he gets — contends that Andrew Bynum and Brook Lopez are better, truer big men.

Dwight Howard was asked about this yesterday following practice, and the Lakers’ center let it be known that O’Neal needs to move on, and that Howard hopes to be a different (more positive) voice once he retires from the game.

Per the LA Daily News and OC Register:

“I don’t care what Shaq says,” Howard said of the former Lakers center, who also moved from Orlando to Los Angeles amid much teeth gnashing in central Florida. “Shaq played the game. He’s done. He’s gone. It’s time to move on. He hated the fact when he played that the older guys were talking about him and how he played and now he’s doing the exact same thing,” Howard said of O’Neal. “Just let it go. There’s no sense for him to be talking trash to me. He did his thing in the league. He’s one of the most dominant players to ever play the game. Just sit back and relax. You did your thing. Your time is up. So, I don’t really care. He can say whatever he wants to say.”

“I have respect for him and what he did for basketball. That’s it. Like I said, he has already did his thing. He played. When my time is up, there’s going to be somebody else who can do everything I can do and probably do it better. Instead of me talking about him, I’ll do my job to try to help him get to where I’m at. I think that’s what guys who have done it before us should do.”

It’s unlikely that Shaquille O’Neal will do anything but talk even more trash going forward, and the sooner Dwight Howard realizes that (and ignores it), the better off he’ll be.

As for Andrew Bynum and Brook Lopez, they will have plenty of opportunities to prove their worth once the season begins.

Shaq needs to chill out and go back to his buick commercials with corny Flo Rida hooks.

  • Brahsef

Lol at Shaq. Saying Brooke Lopez is better. That’s just straight disrespectful

  • Comment_System

shaq can say all he wants, cause he’s gonna keep getting clowned on by charles barkley whenever he opens his mouth anyway.

  • resalazar

Save the drama for your momma

  • MUBWAR

1st bynum(he has a chance at best C tittle) but brook? 5.5 rebounds a game brook? shaq ur hate is obvious and pathetic

  • danpowers

thats just the circle of life. howard will talk the same rubbish about other players in the league once his time will come.he shouldnt get mad at the big fella, everybody knows that d12 is the best centre in the league. maybe he is just a little sensitive because he will never be as good as shaq was and never received any respect from shaq when the diesel was still in the league

  • Rik Smits Mullet

Dwight Howard will never be as dominant as Shaq

  • Mike

Shaq is right. Dwight Howard has no post game.

  • markorsomething

Considering that p*ssy, Dwight Howard, is trying to be mold his career exactly like Shaq’s by going from the Magic to the Lakers, I don’t see why Shaq can’t say anything about him.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Good for Dwight. Shaq really needs to stop. One of the reasons Kobe had an issue with him while they were together is Shaq has a childish streak in him. He’s showing it again. The Superman thing has really gotten to him. It’s a nickname. He’s a fictional superhero. It’s really not that serious. To say that Brook Lopez is better than Dwight? I don’t blame Dwight for saying he doesn’t need to be on the same page with Shaq. Dwight said he will help young centers after his career is done and I believe him. He can learn a lot more from Kareem and Olaujuwon than he came from Shaq anyway. I don’t think Dwight is trying to be like Shaq with his career. I’m sure that he looked up to him as a kid so he’s probably a little hurt after Shaq has taken numerous shots at him. Dwight has consistently taken the high road and he’s done it again. Hopefully at some point Shaq will mature and leave Dwight alone.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

What other legend has constantly talked trash about a current player the way Shaq has done and is still doing? I highly doubt that Dwight will do what Shaq has been doing. It’s not about being as good as Shaq was. He just wants to mind his own business and play ball without having to hear unnecessary comments from the dude. The sensitive one here is Shaq.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    *can

  • RiMajol692

Nobody messes with the true superman. Dwight Howard cried his ass off to go somewhere to play with premium all stars. Shaq didnt. Stop criticizing Shaq cause hes the true center and one of the great player to achieve the dream and one of the funniest dude on the court. Dwight is a wannabe and a crybaby

  • thor

Haha yeah, I hope chuck turns up the heat on him a little more this season.

  • zogs19994

YOUR RETARDED, JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE GOES FROM THE SAME TEAM TO THE NEXT DOESNT MEAN THEIR “MOLDING” THEIR CAREERS LIKE SHAQ

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

And Brook Lopez rebounds like a shooting guard.

  • danpowers

i dont remember if it was chamberlain, abdul-jabbar or both who were talking alot of bullshit about shaq in the 90s like a guy like him would play 10-12 years at best because he aint hungry enough, also that hed be lazy and care more about doin rapmusic and acting than he cared about basketball and so on. this is why i think this kind of bitching would be a big legends thing in general.

true, shaq is talking some shit there. he is just an entertainer and he always was, constantly giving people something to cheer about. the problem is just that shaq is a dumb fuck. thats why the jokes and also his comments as an analyst are big facepalm material. like this comment on howard for example. howard shouldnt take that too serious n rather have a laugh about it

  • floe

steals a nickname, follows around the same teams. i’d call that a groupie!

  • PippenAintEasy

Maybe Shaq is just saying this to ignite a fire within D12.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Other folks also said the same about Shaq so Wilt and Kareem weren’t alone in that. I heard quite a few people say that he could’ve done more if he had been more focused on the game instead of music and acting while he was playing and after he retired. Kobe talked about his physical fitness coming into training camp and how out of shape he was. Shaq is off the wall with his comments about Dwight. No one has backed him up on it.

  • http://twitter.com/natures1stgreen JaM

Howard is the most dominant big man in the game but far from the most skilled. It’s an important distinction to make and is anything but “silly”.

  • vtrobot

Yeah, because the Lakers aren’t a popular team to go to either. And, dude didn’t even want to go there. It was just reported that Dwight plans to gain a bunch more fat and make some really sh!tty kids movies. Copy cat. Shaq, when you add Brooke to the conversation, you sound bitter and foolish.

  • headlines

YOU ARE JUST SO DISRESPECTFUL *Stephen A Smith voice*

  • vtrobot

No sh!t. When has anyone ever referred to Shaq as Superman? There are some NBA nicknames (Dream, etc.) that won’t ever be used again by another player? SUPERMAN? Please. Have at it.

  • JR

It’s funny I don’t think I’ve ever read an article, comment or even a forum post that agree’s with Shaq. Every time the dude says something it’s met with a very critical response. May I suggest a new nickname? The Big Troll?

Shaq has always had it in for Dwight. It all started with Dwight’s rather childish, gimmicky crap he did in the dunk contests. Shaq doesn’t believe for one second that Lopez or anyone else is ahead of Dwight. He just gets a charge out of slapping him down whenever he can.

  • pposse

when he does make a kids movie, we shall get back to this comment.

  • pposse

Kareem never approached Shaq in his stint in LA. Shaq admitted that in one of his first interviews when he joined Miami, and resents Kareem to this day for that. Kareem is willing to help Dwight but never even approached Shaq. Obviously any relationship is a two way street, but im thinking that Kareem wanted nothing to do with Shaq cause he didn’t want any part of a guy who had the potential to break all of his records. I dont think Kareem thinks the same about Howard.

  • zogs19994

“BECAUSE THE LAKERS AREN’T A POPULAR TEAM TO GO TO”
YOU DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT BASKETBALL

  • Justin05

I agree 100%. Dwight Howard is a better fit for the nickname Superman though lol..and that’s what bShaq is really mad about. How childish.

  • justin05

It’s because he branded all of his material goods with the Superman logo. He probably wakes up everyday knowing that we all think of Dwight as Superman and not himself

  • shockexchange

Dwight needs to realize that Shaq can say or do whatever he pleases and the media and fans will give him a pass. The statement is so ridiculous that it has to be taken as a joke. As long as Dwight keeps reacting, it only encourages Shaq. If D12 thinks Shaq’s cajoling was bad, don’t win a ‘chip with “exceptionally more talent than the rest of the leauge” and see what happens. The Shock Exchange is ‘gon roast somebody.

  • Comment_System

and you dont know crap about sarcasm

  • danpowers

yes i remember many of the criticism on him but i was just referring to former center greats.
the funny thing about this is, even though shaq didnt reach his whole potential in terms of showing a full time commitment to his health and staying healthy, he was still better than howard is or will be and he was still (for some arguably) the most dominant center the league has ever seen.

sure nobody will back him up on saying lopez is better than dwight. did you see steve smiths face expression when shaq said brook lopez for the first time? like WTF is he taling about? just entertainment like in a comedy movie. if you listen to shaqs whole statement, then you hear that he is saying that lopez and bynum are the best oldschool type big men when it comes to playing with the back to the basket. when being asked about howard he put howard into the new school category of big men scoring off pick and roles more etc. actually he didnt say brook is the better overall player, just better at playing with his back to the basket.

was a stupid thing to say by shaq anyway, sure. but its not his fault. as entertaining and successful as he is / was: he is just mentaly limited. people have to have some understanding / sympathy for that when talking about shaq ;)

  • Junior Taylor

How is it confounding that Shaq hates Howard’s guts? the man stole his nickname, style and persona The only thing he seems to have not stolen is Shaq’s game. Sheeeeeeeeit….I and everyone on here would react the same way

  • shutup

Bill Walton was the main guy, and Shaq contended that if it was Wilt, Russell or KAJ he wouldnt have had a problem with their criticism, because they had comparable or better careers than himself, something he called the “bigman hierarchy” Clearly Shaq has had the better career and was more skilled than Dwight, so any criticism he wants to throw at Dwight is completely justifiable.

  • roscoe

stole his nickname… come on… who really gives a sh*t? Shaq has a historic record for putting his size 22 in his mouth and this is another milestone moment imo. Shaq can be critical of dh12, but some of his analysis is wack including much of his analysis on tnt w/ chuck/kenney/and the white guy.

  • roscoe

I bet you’d never tell dh12 to his face he is a wannabe or crybaby. How is a nickname important to anyone? Shaq is more concerned with making greenbacks & dh12s ability to take some away.

  • danpowers

karreem had arguably the better carreer not only because of his class but also because of his longevity. but id say shaq had the better carreer than wilt because he had more success (4 rings vs 2 rings). it is also quite obvious that he would have dominated both in head to head matchups.

  • roscoe

if you make that statement you should include the fact kareem & mikan immigrated to the Lakes too only to have shaq follow. Does that make shaq a p*ssy? Not for one second. Shaq was great. Kareem was great. Mikan was great. dh12 is to be determined.

  • arjae828

I agree with Shaq. Dwight Howard has been emulating Shaq since forever. Shaq was the first colorful, affable, bruising center. Robinson, Ewing, Alonzo, Dream (particularly in the early years) were all really mean with little to no personality. Shaq was the first to have the personality with the impressions and dancing and clowning around. I don’t know what type of person Dwight is off the court but it sure seems as though he’s stealing Shaq’s persona as some type of marketing tool. Shaq is semi-right regarding the “Superman” title. Shaq DOMINATED. How do two slam dunk championships make you Superman? Dwight is a great rebounder and shot blocker and he plays the pick and roll better than Shaq could have even dreamed…but seriously is Dwight an all time great or an effective center is a guard dominated NBA? I say that with the utmost respect to Dwight. Shaq, Kareem, Hakeem, Mosses, Wilt, Russell and…Dwight? c’mon son.

  • Cheryl

Shaq is irrelevant and knows it so he’s trying to capture some sense of importance. Kobe will counsel Dwight on how to ignore Shaq. Kobe did a real good job of revealing Shaq’s childishness with silence. It wasn’t until Kobe got his 5th ring, that he revealed his contempt for the dude with his “one more than Shaq” comment. It worked for me.

Shaq is my guy. The cat was dominant. Awesome career. Even born on the right day. Same as me. But… Dwight is right. He needs to move on. Kudos to Dwight Howard for not lashing out and showing some class. Now… Just get rings baby.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shooting.guard.319 Shooting Guard

i know shaq talks alot but he’s got the rings to back up all the talk so dwight shouldn’t worry about him

  • danpowers

thats a disgrace for drexler and jordan

  • http://www.facebook.com/james.alexander.7568 James Alexander

Dwight is right. I like Shaq (in some respects) but mostly because he was a Laker and helped Kobe win some Championships. He has always had an ego problem and a hater. Move on Shaq; and as Dwight stated, you time is up and you should leave it at that. There are far too many haters in this world. Try lifting somebody up instead of putting them down.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

He’s not a good analyst at all even though he knows the game. His analysis of Dwight is clearly biased based on his feelings towards him.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Dwight’s a playful guy, doesn’t mean he copied Shaq’s style and persona. The only reason some think he copied him is because he’s the only big man since Shaq who shows his sense of humor publicly. If you want a clear example of a player copying another’s style and persona, that’s Kobe copying Jordan all the way down to the way he walks. Superman is a nickname that Shaq gave himself. He took it and is taking this way too seriously. He’s a grown man basically holding a grudge because another player also likes Superman.

  • http://twitter.com/SportsChump ChrisHumpherys

Isn’t Shaq paid to be an analyst? It’s time for Dwight to just shut up and play already.

Besides, he’ll forever now be compared to Shaq considering their career paths. Better end up with four rings there, bra, or you’ll forever live in the shadow of the Big Aristotle.

    http://sportschump.net/2012/09/19/the-newest-laker-revitalizes-my-inner-hate-as-a-sports-fan/10091/

  • rodjpr

You know how to shut Shaq, have a MONSTER record year and don’t answer back. Your performance on and off the court will talk for you. BTW, I am not a fan of DH.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

The true Superman is dead, Christopher Reeves. Which makes this whole thing more ridiculous than it sounds. It’s a fictional superhero. Another Superman movie is about to come out so I guess Shaq will be offended again and criticize the movie.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Did you hear his comments? How is he running away from the situation? He told Shaq to sit down somewhere and enjoy his retirement. That’s not running away.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

That childish, gimmicky crap won him the Dunk Contest (along with great dunks) and also created more hype for the next one.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I did see Steve’s face and I can’t wait to hear the whole segment. But I think Shaq was so dominant because of the size and strength that he had naturally. He brought down the goal multiple times before he started to really gain weight. Dwight was a rather skinny guy until he really hit the weights. He’s worked harder to be where he is than Shaq worked to do what he did. It doesn’t take away from what Shaq did, but let’s not act like Shaq dominated guys because of how much time he put in during the offseason.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

It’s not criticism really though. It boils down to “You took my nickname that I gave myself and are now playing in LA where I played so I don’t like you.” Really immature and childish. It’s not about his game. If it was serious analysis, Shaq wouldn’t have thought to mention Brook Lopez in the same sentence with a guy who won 3 straight Defensive Player of the Year Awards and has been the best big man in basketball for long enough for everyone to agree that he is exactly that.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

It’s time for Shaq to just shut up and let Dwight play.

  • danpowers

i would be careful about saying that shaq was not as hard working as others were to get to the level he was. shaq was not only big and strong, there are plenty of big and strong guys who couldnt / cant play. shaq was also really quick, mobile, had good ballhandling skills for a big man. he was even running fastbreaks from coast to coast after a defensive rebound. shaq also spent time doing martial arts training and he was working on his quickness. we dont have the comparison because we didnt see the two going at each other as established stars but by watching tape shaq seems to be faster and quicker than howard is even though shaq was taller and heavier.

his dna surely helped him, but i highly doubt that anyone could be that dominant without putting alot of hard work into it. he might got a little sloppy during some off seasons when he was established but the work he put into his body and game before must have been tremendous.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I wonder what Shaq would say if Michael Beasley suddenly started calling himself “The Big Cactus” or if Jared Sullinger called himself “The Big Shamrock”.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i would not react how Shaq is. That’s ridiculous. We are supposed to support Shaq because Dwight just so happens to be similar physically, and got drafted by the same team? And the nickname was not “stolen” – he used the cape for a dunk in the dunk contest, in which the said Dunk was so “entertaining” (whatever you want to call it) that people just started calling him super man. He never just went out and got a superman tattoo on his arm and coined the name for himself like Shaq did. Shaq is acting like a jealous, petulant, child. And really for no good reason, as he is/was clearly a much more dominant player than Dwight is.
    .
Shaq feels threatened, that is the only logical reason for him acting the way he his, ignoring all reason to downgrade what everyone views as the closest thing to him since he retired.
    .
I mean, saying Brook Lopez is better because he has more moves (after he criticized Dwight by saying he won’t be a great like Shaq “is” until he puts up a season of 30 and 15 – something Shaq never did himself) is the most ridiculous bullshit i have ever heard from the guy. Lopez had more moves than Shaq, so by saying what he said, considering Dwight’s strengths are the same ones Shaq had, Shaq is also saying Brook Lopez was a better player than himself.

  • Junior Taylor

Shaq didn’t help Kobe win anything, he was the biggest reason the Lakers won 3 straight championships.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Howard is the most dominant big man in the game but far from the most skilled? Oh, you mean like Shaq was himself? KG and Duncan were more skilled than Shaq. Neither were more dominant.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

If Shaq really wants to be upset with someone over the whole Superman thing, he may have to look to his left every Thursday night and take issue with Kenny Smith who sang the Superman theme during that Dunk Contest that Dwight won. That may have stuck with people more than the cape.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I guess Shaq must really hate Cam Newton’s guts then…

  • Junior Taylor

So you’re telling me that Howard did not model his game (on/off the court) after Shaq? Come on now, every big man coming up through the HS ranks when Shaq was playing modeled their game in some shape or form after Shaq’s, Howard is the only one that seems to have perfected it in some ways. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but for y’all to sit here and act like Howard’s game was patented after Shaq’s is naive.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Uhm, how would Dwight have patterned his game? I don’t think it’s a pattern as much as what he can and can’t do. He just is naturally similar to Shaq. And since when is being upset that a guy plays similar to you a good excuse to be stupid? If Jordan came out and said Kobe was no better than Kevin Martin because Martin is a better shooter would you defend him because he is upset Kobe plays so similarly? FUCK NO YOU WOULDN’T.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    touché

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

I don’t understand why people get upset when a player models their game after them. Isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery? There is almost no totally brand new way a player can play these days that hasn’t been done by someone else before. Whatever it is your doing, someone else played the exact same way before you. The few exeptions may be Dirk’s shooting game and Super Mario’s unquestionable clutchness.

  • Arnett Counts

Shaq is really silly, after watching a LAZY Bynum or a very limited Lopez and compare them to Superman, err, Howard. Shaq must be hating that D12 is in LA and is about to get some rings…

  • shutup

I beg to differ, I think Shaq wants to see more from Dwight, The only thing Dwight did better than Shaq in their first 5 years despite how much people think of Dwight being this defensive powerhouse is roughly 2 trb, Shaq had similiar block per game numbers and truth be told Shaq’s 8th year numbers compared to Dwights is better in almost every way and Shaq led the league in scoring that year. Shaq 29.7ppg 3 blocks per game 13.6 rebounds, Dwight 20.6, 2.1 and 14.5; also Shaq had better assist numbers 3.8 to Dwight’s 1.9 and Shaq had a better fg% by a very slim .001 but thats on 8 more attempts per game and Shaq shot a better ft%. I think Shaq has all the right in the world to criticize Dwight. Oh btw fyi Dwight has never avg more than 2.9 blocks per game, ever, Shaq has done it twice and his career high is 3.5 in his rookie year.

  • Junior Taylor

Listen, I’m not defending Shaq because him saying that Bynum and especially Brook Lopez are better than Howard has to be one of the stupidest statements ever made. I’m just trying to get into Shaq’s mind and figure out why he continues to take shots at Howard. It’s obvious when you see the similarities in their games. MJ would never say anything bad about Kobe because he is not as petty/childish as Shaq

  • shutup

Shaq can say whatever he wants about Dwight he’s earned that right through his play on the court, I just think Shaq wants to see more from Dwight, The only thing Dwight did better than Shaq in their first 5 years despite how much people think of Dwight being this defensive powerhouse is roughly 2 trb, Shaq had similiar block per game numbers and truth be told Shaq’s 8th year numbers compared to Dwights is better in almost every way and Shaq led the league in scoring that year. I think Shaq has all the right in the world to criticize Dwight. Oh btw fyi Dwight has never avg more than 2.9 blocks per game, ever, Shaq has done it twice and his career high is 3.5 in his rookie year.I wanted to post this were everybody could see.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

He also has the right to sound stupid which he does to almost everyone every time he talks about Dwight. If he wanted to see more, he should have just said it along with acknowledging that Dwight is the best center in basketball instead of saying that Brook Lopez is a better center. He doesn’t want to see more. He wants to berate Dwight in order to maintain some kind of relevancy now that he’s no longer playing. Don’t care about comparing the two players. Dwight is the best center in basketball today. The only one who doesn’t think so and is talking about it often is Shaq and it has nothing to do with how he plays regardless of what he says. Charles Barkley knows it which is why he always says Shaq needs to let that Superman thing go.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

You’re already in Shaq’s mind as far as I can tell. He’s petty and childish when it comes to Dwight. That’s really it.

Shaq feels threatened!!! that’s what i’ve been saying. he shouldn’t feel threatened, as Dwight is no Shaq on the court, but he obviously does. There is no other real reason to act this way. Really? I know that he has the tattoo, but I don’t think he actually could have used anything Superman-related on any real product because DC/Marvel (?) wouldn’t have allowed that. Maybe someone should get DC/Marvel to serve them both with a cease and desist and have them STFU and stick to lame letter/number nicknames.

  • shutup

exactly that, there is a misconception that Dwight is a better defender than Shaq and its just not true. Shaq is Dwights superior or at least equal in every facet of the game, even on defense. Numbers don’t lie. Also Shaq was better at guarding his own man compared to Dwight, while guarding better players overall. Just because Dwight is the best we have now doesnt make him better than Shaq.

Shaq clogged the lane better than Howard due to his size. Howard is more capable of guarding on the perimeter and off of pick and rolls/pops, while still clogging the lane very, very, well.

  • Redd

Kind’ve misleading, he was just saying Shaq’s time in the league is over & he should cheer on the new guys. The title makes it out as though he was trying to go hard at him. TMZ.

Lol at Shaq helping “Kobe win some Championships”.

  • shutup

Dwight gets abused on pick and rolls just like Shaq did. Dwight got handled by Pau in the finals, the only person to outmatch Shaq head-to-head was Olajuwan, and Shaq still put up monster numbers. Dwight cannot guard the better post players, Zach Randolph, Al Jefferson, Bynum and Pau all give Dwight major problems and the majority of the time they put up better offensive numbers in their head to head matchups. Who has Dwight guarded on the perimeter? Give me stats or give up, there is no room for conjecture, Dwight is in no way a better basketball player than Shaq the most I’ll concede is that they are equals on the defensive end and thats only after admitting Shaq focused more on offense the further his career went on. Shaq’s rookie year matches up with any of Dwight’s years thus far.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Does anyone else see the irony of Shaq being salty at Dwight for using the Superman nickname… when Superman is a goddamn DC Comic that’s existed before either of them were born? Before their fathers were born? There’s nothing original about naming yourself after somebody else’s cartoon character, especially when that character is one of the most popular superheroes ever. You can’t have something stolen from you that isn’t yours in the first place. What a baby.

  • haslem

Lopez does not have more moves than prime Shaq. Go back and watch the tapes.

  • haslem

Shaq averaged 38 points and 16 rebounds per game in the first finals he ‘helped’ Kobe win

Shaq had more moves that worked. Not more moves in general. Atleast, not in the post.

  • Yesse

I hate to say it, but he is right. I don’t undestand where Shaq gets to envy for Dwight.

  • flight7

    best nba centers:
    1. Dwight Howard
    2. Andrew Bogut
    3. Andrew Bynum
    4. Brook Lopez

  • danpowers

    1howard 2bynum 3hibbert 4lopez 5bogut would make more sense

  • omphalos

Did anybody else pick up on the implication that Dwight is doing everything Shaq did and doing it better? “When my time is up, there’s going to be someone who can do everything I can do and probably do it better. Instead of me talking about him, I’ll do my job and try to help him get to where I’m at.” I know it’s subtle, but Dwight intentionally or unintentionally implied that he’s just as good as Shaq at the very least, and at worst that Shaq is jealous of him.

  • mont

KG and TD are not centers lol

  • Drig

If Bogut can stay healthy, he’s the 3rd best C in the L.

  • Drig

Does consistency on a game to game basis matter?? If not, you might have a point. If it does, get outta here! And Shaq was not a good PnR defender. He was a good paint enforcer when he was locked in but he wasn’t as versatile as Dwight was/is. Shaq is overall the better player by a SIGNIFICANT margin but Dwight has him beat over the course of a season on D.

  • danpowers

not if lopez learns how to rebound

  • shutup

HUH? I said Dwight gets abused on the PNR just like Shaq (which means I think Shaq got abused on the PNR too, btw) I’m talking about avgs comparing not only game to game season to season and cumulative totals. Comparing Shaq’s first 8 years to Dwight’s; Shaq’s numbers defensively are better or equal to Dwights. Shaqs trb per game avg by his 8th year was12.2 Dwights is 13.0 Shaq’s blocks per game by his 8th year was 2.6 Dwight’s avg is 2.2. Take in to account that imo Shaq was better at clogging the lane and defending elite bigmen of his era and that is why I believe Shaq is better on defense than Dwight.

When u look up into shaquille o’neal’s nose, u will see an empty skull. Scream in it and it will echo very loudly. Just like when u scream in a cave,it will echo loudly because it has nothing inside, empty, a hollow cavity. This guy is nothing but negative comments, from hakeem to yao. He should be called “the big insecure”.

All I know is that Dwight Howard damn near jumped from the free throw line with a cape on and threw the ball in while he was flying!! CASE closed. HE ACTUALLY HAS THE BUILD TO BE SUPERMAN.Get over it..You are the deisel or the big aristotle ect.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgzyesC3DFk&feature=related

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

They’re big men. Big men aren’t just centers. They’re also power forwards.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

The cape and phone booth weren’t as important as him dunking on a 12 foot goal easily or jumping extremely high into the air and throwing the ball into the basket. With or without the props, he put on a show both years. Whether you like the props or not, it was creative and no one can deny that.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Throw your stats away. None of it matters. This is very simple. Shaq’s feelings are hurt. He’s a grown man whining about a guy who’s now the best center in basketball and who also likes Superman. This isn’t about comparing the two. Shaq was dominant. All good. No one denies it. But he needs to leave Dwight alone because he’s making himself look like a fool every time he takes unnecessary shots at Dwight.

  • danpowers

shaq almost seemed to touch the top of the fuckin backboard at some of his ingame dunks. he will always be superman while howard is just the light version of it. he (dwight) is a great center and fun to watch anyway

  • danpowers

nothing but negative comments 3 finals mvps and 4 championship ring while being the most dominant big man the league has ever seen. but sure, he often talks trash and isnt really the brightest human being on our planet

  • aicomeback

true but you would never confuse shaq or dwight as power forwards

LOL Shaq love him but dang hater haha

  • shutup

I disagree, Shaq isn’t comparing himself to Dwight, other people are, and if it’s disrespectful to compare Dwight to say Brook Lopez than it’s equally disrespectful to compare Shaq and Dwight, Brook is closer to being Dwight than Dwight is to being Shaq. Oh and jumping into a conversation without reading prior posts is well a little bit foolish. I responded to people saying Dwight is Shaq’s superior on the defensive end with stats; I utilized the stats to prove otherwise. Nothing Dwight does is going to change Shaq’s legacy, but Shaq is is superior in almost every facet of the game thus he is more qualified than 99% of the world’s population to criticize Dwight. Only a foolish man would jump to the conclusion it’s jealousy, maybe just maybe Shaq is frustrated at the fact that Dwight is one of the most fundamentally lacking players to ever be considered the greatest at his respective position and it probably ( i say probably because I don’t contend that I know what motivates another man)upsets Shaq more that this is his predecessor to the greatest center in the NBA throne that Shaq held for so long.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

If one wanted to compare Dwight to Shaq they could say that Dwight is a better defender. So no, it’s not equally disrespectful to compare Brook to Dwight as it is to compare Dwight to Shaq. Brook isn’t closer to being Dwight as Dwight is to being Shaq because he isn’t close to being the best center in basketball. Dwight is the best center in the league right now as Shaq was during his time in LA. It is foolish to talk about stats when it’s not needed. This isn’t about their games. The point is that Shaq is being childish. That’s really it. If only a foolish man would consider it jealousy then a whole lot of people are foolish to you. Shaq wasn’t that great with the fundamentals himself if you watched him play. His greatest asset was his power. Shaq is frustrated because Dwight likes Superman and nicknamed himself just like Shaq nicknamed himself. After a fictional character. It’s pretty easy to see it. Who else has even thought about saying that Brook Lopez is a better center than Dwight? There’s a reason for it. Shaq is petty and is still holding a grudge over something that’s really not that serious. This isn’t criticism which is why no one who has played or coached has agreed with him and no one is backing him up on it. Everyone knows he’s wrong and Barkley corrected him as soon as he said it.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Also, if one wanted to say that Dwight is the better defender (which he is), they could make a great case. Who guards the pick and roll better? Dwight. Who can guard smaller players better? Dwight. What did Shaq do better than Dwight does defensively? Name one thing.

  • http://twitter.com/natures1stgreen JaM

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Shaq was a far better passer and had no less than 4 dominant moves in the post. Dwight has one and he just developed it last year. Watch some old Shaq tapes, before he put on all the weight.. he used to shoot jumpshots. When’s the FIRST time you actually saw Dwight Howard square up for a jumpshot? He doesn’t.

And to say that KG and Duncan (the best post players in the league since Hakeem) were more skilled than Shaq is saying what exactly? Of course they are, they’re great. But that doesn’t mean that Shaq wasn’t highly skilled. Dwight isn’t at all. But he is still an extremely effective and efficient basketball player.

  • Telcontar

    thats just straight dum

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Saying that KG and Duncan were more skilled than Shaq is saying the truth. You said Howard is the most dominant but not the most skilled which is the same as Shaq was. That was the point. Gasol is more skilled than Dwight. KG and Duncan were more skilled than Shaq. No difference there. If you really believe that Dwight isn’t skilled at all, you need to maybe watch him play once or twice. You don’t score 20 points a game without skill. He isn’t dunking the ball 10 times a game for those 20 points. Rebounding is also a skill. You don’t lead the league in rebounding without skill.

  • Fat Lever

This message has been approved by Omar Credle. Shaq lacks the minerals and vitamins/irons and the niacin.

  • LakeShow

Naw i’ll concede they are equals defensively and I prefer Dwight’s defense, but it might not be effectively “better.”

  • shutup

I could respect that, I think most people prefer Dwight because he looks like he’s doing so much more on the defensive end and Shaq’s numbers were overshadowed by his offensive game.

  • shutup

Mikan was “drafted” to the Lakers or acquired through a lottery would be more accurate, he did have a choice to were he ended up. Anyway immigrated wouldn’t be the correct term, migrated is would have sufficed, the Lakers werent some foreign nation….oh, nevermind.

  • shutup

Or Shaq open hand slapping him to the ground like he did Greg Ostertag.

  • shutup

Clog the lane, avg more blocks per game over more seasons, deter people from coming into the lane, and lastly but most importantly stop the opposing teams big man. Dwight for all his defensive accolades is really a subpar one-on-one post defender. Look back at what Pau did to him in the Finals, or the fits that Bynum, Randolph, Jefferson and Horford give him. Not to mention that Shaq’s offense is also part of his defense, the opposing big man doesnt get to rest on the other end of the court and he can’t leave Shaq, in fact all the double teams that it takes to stop Shaq effects the whole opposing teams defense, Dwight on the other hand not so much.

  • shutup

Do you have any stats to back up the Dwight is the better defender? I have stats that show Shaq is as good of a defender, or actually better than Dwight defensively, in their first 8 seasons respectively. The only thing Dwight will give you is like 2 trb and by the end of his career I’m pretty sure the number will be a lot closer or maybe even drop below Shaq’s (21 year) career numbers. Oh and as far as Shaq/Dwight/Brook comparisons, how would you like it? we can compare their 4th year respectively and Shaq blows Dwight out the water in almost every category, and Brook and Dwight have eerily similar numbers, except for a notable rebounding difference (around 5+for Dwight), or we can compare career totals, or we can compare career totals and try to calculate/ speculate what Brook/Dwight will manage to do if their career last at least 3/4 the length of Shaq’s career.

  • NBEh

someone should mention to both of these centers that superman is now a supremely gay icon after the last movie that “came out”
