Gregg Popovich’s Wife Wants Him to Be Nicer to the Media

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is infamous for his treatment of reporters and their pesky, often inane questions. Fans may love the shtick and find it hilarious, but Pop’s wife isn’t entirely thrilled with his boorish behavior. From 790 the Ticket (via SRI): “Why he makes things so tough on courtside reporters: ‘I know. I’m a jerk. I’m going to go ahead and admit it publically to the whole world. Tell me what to do. What should I do? The quarter ends, you just got outscored by 12 points, they had eight offensive rebounds so the question will be ‘you just got outrebounded by X amount so what are you going to do about it?’ I don’t know. Am I going to make a trade during the timeout? I don’t know. I’m going to do drills here for a while by the time the game starts, I don’t know. I’m not going to do anything. I’m just going to go back to the bench and hope we play better. I don’t know how to answer so sue me for being stupid and not having the answers to the questions. (Host: Keep doing it, it’s entertaining.) It entertains everybody but my wife. When I get home and she says ‘geez why are you so mean? You’re a jerk, people hate you.’ I go I’m sorry honey, I have to do better next time.’ On being criticized by his wife when he gets home: ‘And there’s no exaggeration. Did you see that guy honey? Did you see him? All you have to do is see him and you know why I answered the way I did. (She says) ‘That’s no excuse, you’re a grown man. Show some maturity.’ I said ‘I can’t, I can’t do it.’”

Doubt it will happen, maybe the first interview will go smooth, don’t see it lasting longer than that though. Pop is the best, I expect the Spurs to be contenders this year, hopefully they slide in and let OKC and the Lakers faceoff before they see either one.

pop’s honesty & ability to criticize himself are remarkable characteristics for an NBA coach. Seriously, try to think who was the last coach to criticize himself. I can’t think of anyone in the NBA, can you?

I think they should just do away with sideline reporters period. What item of value do you ever glean from them that couldn’t be relayed to the announcers. If player X who we just saw hurt his knee goes to the locker room, do they really need to pay someone to follow him around to the locker room and confirm that he really did hurt his knee and wasn’t faking it. The worst is if a player has some situation going on off the court, good or bad. Then we have to hear all about how miraculous it is that he actually decided to play, how everyone played their hearts out for him and what the game means to him. Not to be insensitive to personal tragedies, but no one asks me at the end of my day how amazing it is that I actually went to work after staying up all night changing diapers and feeding. It’s work. You do it. The game is their work. They just do it like I do. Nothing amazing about it.
    /End of rant.

pop’s ability to make fun of himself is what endears him to people.

It is amazing if your productivity didn’t drop haha. I get what you’re saying though, I’ve had quite a few deaths in the family and friends kill themselves, and I still went to work. Id lose my job if I didn’t. Just like the rest of the world, tragedy happens every day. Honestly, when one of my good friends killed himself it was a lot easier to play sports than it was to go to work. Yeah, sports is these guys jobs, but in my opinion its harder to go and do about any other job after a tragedy than sports, bball is such a release, for most of us anyway, and you’re mind is only focused on the game. Whereas, in an office job, or construction, or whatever its a lot harder to get the tragedy out of your head

Another vacuous comment from you..LOL. Pop is all about family man. That’s why he’s able to get a group of guys to play together well.

He’s the best interview in basketball. His reactions to Craig Sager are the best comedy in professional sports.
