James Harden to Sign 5-Year $80 Million Extension With Houston Rockets

As expected, the Houston Rockets and newly-acquired forward James Harden have agreed on terms for a max-level contract. Harden, 23, will earn $80 million over the next five seasons. Reports Yahoo! Sports: James Harden has agreed to a five-year, $80 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets, league sources said. Harden, 23, was acquired by the Rockets late Saturday in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Wednesday was the deadline for teams to agree to contract extension with players taken in the first round of 2009 draft. The Rockets sent Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb and future draft considerations to the Thunder. Along with Harden, the Thunder sent Cole Aldrich, Lazar Hayward and Daequan Cook to the Rockets.”

I don’t blame James for signing it. But Houston just made him one of the most overpaid guys in the league.

  • GotHandles?

Good for him. He was willing to take $20 million less from OKC and they kinda punked him over a few milli. I think both teams did well here and BeardMan gets paid.

  • pposse

who else from the class of 09 is making this kind of money right now?

what a rip off. i cant believe houston has overpayed for lin, asik and now think harden is an mvp talent. what a joke of a contract, guys like lawson and curry getting 11 a year and harden gets 16. RIP OFF

    Meet the new Joe Johnson.

  • biggieman

if he was willing to stay in okc for less money, then he would still be there. Harden said himself that he wanted the max and thought he had more time even though Presti told Harden that he only had an hour to decide on their final offer. I think OKC came out way better in the long run on this trade. I am happy for Harden to get paid, but there is no question that the Rockets overpaid.

  • Bravo

Lmao no one. I’m from Toronto and they not even close to a deal for demar derozan

Redonc. He better average something around 25-5-5 with 2 threes and 2 steals.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Daryl Morey plays moneyball. He is betting on his system that these players will translate their production in short minutes to key roles. It’s a hell of a gamble. But if he didn’t do it, or talk the owner into it, i would assume his job would be in jeopardy.

  • roscoe

if i am harden i take $80 million from HOU over $55 million from OKC all day. Congrats to harden.

  • Dymez

James Harden is a special talent. He doesn’t deserve $80M for what he has done thus far, but he now has the stage all to himself to prove that he is worth the cash. I’m not going to jump the gun and call it a mistake just yet. I have a feeling this guy can average 23, 5, and 5. I’ll be keeping an eye on Houston throughout the season with my League Pass, that’s for sure.

A lot of people have forgotten about DeRozan.

  • bike

He’s movin’ on up. Going to get that de-lux apartment in the sky. Finally got his piece of that pie.

  • biggieman

$55 mil was for 4 years not 5… One thing I don’t hear anyone talk about is endorsements, did you see the beard in those Nike commercials? You think he would be getting those if he wasn’t just in the finals and getting on national tv twice a week? I don’t think so, he would have easily made up the difference in salary with the extra endorsements he would receive by playing in OKC… We’ll see how he feels when they the Rockets are irrelevant and struggle to win 25 games this year, and OKC is back in the finals.

  • Dagger

    Rightfully so, imo.

  • Ben

Jeeze louise! Thank god the Suns didn’t get him.

  • RipCity

    Sun got paid

  • fruizm

haha that sounded like a League Pass commercial.

  • fruizm

    good point.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

He’s a good scorer. If he improved his FG% and did something else other than score, he would be alright. I just read that he won’t get an extension from Toronto by tonight’s deadline. Hopefully he’ll have a good season whether it’s in Toronto or elsewhere.

  • Dagger

I increasingly agree with the way Simmons summed it up: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8573213/the-harden-disaster

  • Dagger

He’s a good finisher, but he’s a poor ball-handler, a terrible creator, and he still can’t shoot. His D is also sub-par. When the Raptors drafted Terrence Ross I was pretty sure DeRozan wouldn’t get extended by the deadline. Hopefully he has a good season, but I could see him playing elsewhere next year. Which is a shame, because if the Raptors got even decent play from their wings they could reach .500 this year.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Dagger is right, Terrence Ross was a sure sign that Derozan is either going to be a FA or will be moved for something else if he doesn’t show out this season.

  • robb

The lockout didn’t teach them anything it seems…

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Don’t forget about the Landry Fields signing too. I wouldn’t be surprised to see DeRozan in another uniform by the end of this season if a good trade presents itself.

  • KC

I dont blame harden one bit for wanting a max deal because he knew someone would be desperate enough to give it to him. Dont believe for one second that he was shocked or sad to get Traded. Players play for money first and rings second. With that said he is being way over paid! Max contracts are being thrown around like nothing these days. I understand franchise’s are Desperate to find some semblance of a star but all they are doing is hurting themselves in the long run. They get stuck in the middle of the pack like my Sixers year after year. We were foolish enough to give 80 million dollar deals to brand and Iguodala out of sheer desperation and it got us nothing but an 8th seed and first round exits every year. Just good enough to never get a good drag pick and not good enough to make any noise in the playoffs (thank god for the amnesty clause!!). Congrats Houston, you will be in for the same. No one is desperate to come play with James harden. Lets see how good he is when for once he finds out what a double team looks like….

  • roscoe

5 years of income at $80 million is still better than 4 years of income at $55 million. there is value in a guaranteed 5th year and the additional cabbage, bc we all knw injuries are apart of the nba (ie drose).

  • roscoe

@fruizm: if someone put two piles of $$ in front of u and one pile was $25 million bigger u ain’t taken the smaller pile of $$ no matter who you play with. this ain’t algebra; its called getting paid.

  • fruizm

what the hell are you talking about? I said good point to what biggierman said, about the endorsements. so calm down!

  • Vince

And there goes Houston’s cap space for the next few years… smh. Harden is good, but not THAT good.

  • Anti_republicans

He took cash over championships oh well his loss it was a bad decision on his part and he should of taken that 55 million in okc

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

    who cares

  • RV6

They still have room for another max signing…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ok @disqus_kzFNajbi2S:disqus – Demar Derozan just signed for 4 years $42million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dagger

Wow. Just wow. I admit I made a basic error in looking at the situation: I thought rationally, and Bryan Colangelo doesn’t roll that way. Of course he was going to offer 40 mil based on imagined potential. Didn’t he do the same with Calderon and Bargnani? That’s how we build championship contenders in Toronto.

Just when I thought that there might be a glimmer of hope in the team’s future . . . it’s almost funny.

  • russian guy

Harden played his cards better and being on the second best team in the league certainly helps.People must understand that ‘worth’ is a subjective term, constituted by the market. The market for James Harden was 16 mil. That is what he is ‘worth’,not an imaginary number fans want to put on a player.

  • Dagger

53 million to Turkoglu. 50 million to Bargnani. 45 million to Calderon. 20 million to Fields. I should have seen this coming. Colangelo doesn’t bid against the rest of the league.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I just saw that…I don’t understand this at all.

  • bigA

He can probably get great endorsements from China playing alongside Lin.

  • fauzi

Harden must have super fantastic agent to work for him to command 80 mil 5 years for his service..sometime people forget that your agent play a most important part to sell your service to organization..how to negotiate for the best deal…there are so many overpaid guys in the nba especially if u re 6’10 and aboveo like kwame..thanks to his agent..players of kwame quality can get 8 mil per years..its just stupid for the team..great job kwame agent!!

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

He may be earning some of that money tonight with the way he’s playing. Only one game, but maybe he will be a superstar level player.

  • RKJ92

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Harden is a superstar talent worthy of a max deal. That is all.

  • L Dribble

    37 points, 12 assists, 6 rebounds…rip off? Lol.

  • He has a good start with 27 pts and 12 assists in his first game

  • 37 pts i mean

  • Dagger

I have no idea why people were so low on him. Yeah, he sucked in the Finals. Worthy and Lebron have done the same. Harden’s no Lebron, but he’s a very special young player.

  • Mr. Wet

He’s definitely got superstar potential, but it’s just one game. I think he’ll probably be worth it. But we can’t call it yet.

  • Troy

One of the most patient players I’ve seen. Shoots with great efficiency (37 points on better than 50% shooting) and is just a fantastic playmaker.

  • T-Money

that ain’t moneyball. he’s been trying to throw a max contract at someone for years.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i was talking about all of the money he spent this summer, in response to what DTown said.

  • roscoe

@fruizm: if u r going to jump on my post be prepared to be regulated.

  • fruizm

not even my girl can regulate me…do you think “ROSCOE” can??

  • roscoe

    @fruizm: good point.

  • Michelle

Harden is showing that he is worth the money. Wins the first 2 games for the Rockets and scores 37 pts in game 1 and a new career high 45 pts in game 2
