Kobe Bryant Says This is the Most Talented Team He’s Been On

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Over the span of 16 seasons, Kobe Bryant has played alongside plenty of talented ballers in Los Angeles. Numerous All-Stars, current and future Hall of Famers have helped Bryant win five NBA championships, but he’s apparently never seen anything like this year’s Laker team.

According to Kobe, this is the most talented squad that he’s been a part of.

Reports the LA Times:

Kobe Bryant was also there in El Segundo, make no mistake, saying this was the best team he’d ever been part of “on paper,” the catchphrase for managing expectations uttered by almost everybody of significance Monday.

“On its face, it’s the best talent I’ve been around,” said Bryant, entering his 17th NBA season. “Whether that translates into winning a championship, that remains to be seen. But just on paper, you’re obviously talking about defensive players of the years, MVPs, All-Stars. You’re talking about a myriad of things where guys are on top of their position and have been at the top of their position.”

Talent and star power aside, chemistry is what will determine how successful these Lakers can be. And for what it’s worth, the team’s two biggest forces (Kobe and Dwight Howard) think they’ll get along swimmingly on and off the court.

As Kobe Bryant points out, there’s a big difference between talent and finding the secret sauce that leads to winning a title.

The team does look great on paper, but the team with Malone and Payton was talented too, and they lost.

  • the king

SO WHAT Heat and OKC or Heat and LAC Nash as 2 old CP3 will eat him up Westbrook will do the same The Heat are the new Bulls NBA fans o hell yea

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

ill cheer for them once blake acts his age

  • Nope

ya they’ll cross him over and drive right into the paint where….. dwight howard and another 7 footer are posted up… :/ easy peasy right?

  • ajmaj

miami heat is still the beast of the NBA..Lakers are still slow and wont catch up with the Clips or the Thunder..

  • spit hot fiyah

the old shaq teams had some great role players, but this team is top heavy

  • Thomas

Can’t wait to see these guys carry Kobe into another Championship and watch Kob act like he friggin earned it.

  • gusisit

a game has never been won on paper

  • Malik

MIke Brown is the weak link. He’s no Phil Jackson.

  • RKJ92

That’s why there will be ego issue’s between kobe and dwight you’ll see..

  • Drig

Just like Jordan, Magic, Bird etc. right?

Dwight is prone to get into foul trouble. And Gasol isn’t exactly a deterrent at the rim. Westbrook, Durant, Harden, CP3, all of those guys will be getting to the rim easily against LA. Kobe is no longer able to stay in front of guys the way he used to. Who is backing up Dwight and Gasol? I see them getting to the WCF but having a lot of trouble with OKC and ultimately losing. Their frontline would destroy Miami’s, but Metta isn’t capable of doing anything with LeBron anymore. D-Wade is a better overall player than Kobe is and has been for a good 3 seasons. They have no one who can guard Bosh since Gasol isn’t nearly as quick as he is. I’d pick Miami over LA if they met up in the Finals. But I see another Miami/OKC matchup in June. I’m also intrigued by Kobe saying that this is still his team. Not only the words but how he said them. I hope that doesn’t mean that he still plans to shoot bad shots while he has a superstar and other stars around him. If so, LA may be done in the 2nd round against a team like Denver. As for the comparisons with the 04 team with Malone and Payton, those two guys were extremely old and headed out of the league. Kobe and Nash are old, but Nash is a different kind of PG than GP was. And Kobe is still great enough to do what he needs to do. He just needs to concentrate on closing games now more than anything else which is why he shouldn’t exert himself too much on the offensive end until the end of games. Let Nash run the game. Catch and shoot. Get Dwight and Gasol the ball down low. Possibly win one or two more championships if you can get past OKC and ride off into the sunset. Simple.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Now that I think about it, didn’t Kobe reportedly say that it was now Dwight’s team during the Olympics right after the trade happened? Now he says it’s still his? Strange.

  • rainman

they lost with Slava Medvedenko as their starting Power forward. KArl malone basically didnt play in the finals (other than a bit in one game). People tend to forget that. Despite all the chemistry issues, had Malone been healthy i still think LA woulda gotten past that and won, just based off of talent alone. This year is a whole different issue, the league has more superpower teams(ala the Heat), so chemistry is gonna really count.

  • rainman

Also, 04 Gary Payton was NO Steve Nash of today.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

If they win it, they won’t carry him. He’ll be an important part. Just not as important as he was in his previous championship seasons.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Very top heavy. No one to back up Dwight and Gasol. Only bench players worth mentioning are Steve Blake and Antawn Jamison.

  • Omnixyience

You haven’t seen MWP today, just think about this 276 down to 255.
Watch the photos of their media day earlier then you’ll see.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

Smush Parker would like to call shenanigans on this.

  • nick

    haha and kwame brown

  • Max

Jody Meeks and CDR aren’t to bad as backups and you have Jordan Hill who has some talent hidden inside of him.

  • http://twitter.com/SupermanayrB B!

On paper…….. ’04 was an on paper team as well, hence the reference.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

His size isn’t the issue. He just can’t deal with LeBron James, period.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Compared to the benches of other great teams, they’re last. Miami, OKC, the Clippers bench is loaded.

  • Max

    But the starters are better.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

There will be more of a drop off when their bench players are playing than there will be for a team like Miami or the Clippers. When Dwight is in foul trouble and Kobe needs a rest, what will they do? Will Steve Blake run the offense well when Nash is resting his back on the sideline? Whereas with a team like the Clippers, if CP3 is out, Chauncey can step in and run the team. If Blake is out, Lamar Odom steps right in. Jamal Crawford will back up Chauncey. The Lakers have a great starting 5 but championship teams have good or great benches.

  • RKJ92

Thats the thing.. Kobe isnt a Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson or Larry Bird.. They were all wayyyy better then him. If I was starting a franchise and had to pick from those 4 players Kobe wouldnt even be a thought in my mind I’d easily go Jordan > Magic > Larry > Kobe, in that order.

  • RKJ92

I couldn’t agree more that was very well put.

  • Conor

Hill for Howard, Jamison for Gasol, and Meeks for Bryant are all very good backup solutions.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Jamison is an undersized PF. Meeks for Bryant…that’s a huge dropoff. Hill is solid but he isn’t half of the defensive presence Dwight is.

  • shockexchange

Horry Jr is way too modest. Given the watered down NBA, Pau Gasol / D12 at the same ____ time … two skilled 7-footers at the same ____ time, MWP (at one time the best player on the planet), Nash and Horry Jr may be the best team in the history of the L.

  • danpowers

nobody in the legue can. i think its more about stopping the rest of the heat. so id be more concerned about bryant being able to stopp wade as a lakers fan.

  • Redd

I’m happy about this team. Now Kobr can never ever be compared to Jordan. This ruined his legacy.

  • danpowers

but this isnt the coachs fault. kobe and shaq had their ego issues too even though jax was coaching them for years.

  • biggieman

It just shows how spoiled and lucky Kobe Bryant is that this is even a question… Who else in the history of the league has been lucky enough to play with so many HOF’s and All-Stars!!?? Im sick of it! Kobe is a product of his surroundings, put him in another city for his career and he’s just another great player with NO RINGS!

  • danpowers

the 2004 lakers were the most talented team kobe was ever on. but also the best example that championships are not allways won on paper. sometimes a tough role player is more valuable than a former star trying to play a smaller role. it is a great team tho, but howard is nowhere near shaq. prime-shaq alone was more dominant than the whole lakers frontcourt of today.

  • danpowers

no player ever won a championship on his own. kobe has had more talent around him than most other champs but it is not that he was lazy or relys on others, he is also etremely competative. a guy of his caliber wouldve won at least one chip on his own.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

It doesn’t take much to get Wade going. At his age, I don’t see Kobe guarding Dwyane effectively to the point where he’s unable to get to the basket. The thing about LeBron is that when he’s doing what he does, not only is he scoring but he has the guys around him playing their best. It’s not possible to handle both LeBron and Wade when they’re hot at the same time. Wade is a good playmaker himself. It’s easier to contain a guy who’s just a scorer. What will any team do against a lineup of LeBron, Wade, Ray Allen, Chris Bosh and Rashard Lewis? I just think the Heat are too dangerous for anyone.

  • danpowers

true, they are scary. i put it pretty short but cosign what you said. there are not many ways the heat could be beat. the lakers only chance is the howard matchup. but only if they keep him out of foul trouble and take advantage of the doubleteams the heat will have to throw at him. i think that is a big if tho

  • RKJ92

Ya, that is understandable but Phil Jackson also won 3 championships with them something unattainable without managing their personalities with a high degree of coaching ability, hell he even managed Rodman! could you imagine Mike Brown trying to coach Rodman that would be so funny to watch!

  • justin05

I don’t think so. Kobe will only play 2 more years so after that it’s up to Dwight to carry the Lakers. Maybe we can bring in Russel Westbrook in a few years and then oh shiit once again..

  • http://www.facebook.com/therealkenNY Kenny Wu

You REALLY going to get mad that Bryant has had a top notch behind him his whole career? No player has ever won by himself, and nobody has ever won multiple championships without a top notch front office. Luck has nothing to do with it, it’s all hard work, from the front office to the front court. Nobody has ever won a game by name and jersey alone.

  • justin05

lol talent hidden behind him? I’m a talented basketball player but Jordan Hill would whoop my ass 1-on1. He’s a professional for a reason. You offseason slam fanboys don’t really know much about basketball. I can’t wait for the season to start so all of the regulars who know what they are talking about post commets.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Bill Russell.

  • justin05

Chris Bosh isn’t half the defensive presence Dwight Howard is that is a vacuous statement. Huge dropoff? When Lebron sits for the heat Mike Miller is a huge dropoff, when Russel Westbrrook sits Derek is huge dropoff… Not a baller son..either is the toronto fan. where are all the intelligent ppl at?

  • http://www.facebook.com/rig.veda.94 Rig Veda

I know Kobe wants to be relevant, but Kobe does not know while the whole world know that. I know he is still marketing himself for his future like MJ and I can appreciated that. However, his ego has become exceeding his talent. This is the second chance the Lakers has put together a great team, please don’t “f” it up again! Put your sh$t in the locker and play ball like a team of 5. We all know you’re great and look man, nothing will undermined that ever. You will be like shit just like MJ after you retired, but nobody care. Your greatness will always be remember! Play the game and don’t hold the ball longer than 3 second. There are four other players that need to improve their stat!

  • Kadavour

    And Chris Mihm

  • Kadavour

Rodman was a character off the court, but ANY coach of ANY era would want his effort and selflessness on the court. Dude would get you 15rebs, lock up his man, and pass the ball with pleasure. How is such an individual uncoachable?

  • RKJ92

I’m no offseason fanboy and neither is byanymeansnecessary, we both know a lot about basketball most likely even more then you do.. I can also add that we have been posting for a long time and idk about him but I have league pass and I watch as many teams as I have time for and when im not watching games and im at work im either on slam or espn so thanks for your bunk analysis on us but that clearly is not the case here.

  • RKJ92

So Clearly you have been living under a rock? he played well yes but I was talking about MIKE BROWN not being able to control him at all if phil could barely do it, why dont you do me a favour? youtube dennis rodman and tell me he doesnt sit down in the middle of a game at the half court line, kick a camera man, commit numerous SERIOUS flagrant fouls, Leave games without reason, and talk shit to Phil Jackson with no leg to stand on.

Then get back to me kay? ;)
