Mark Cuban Says Mavericks Were ‘Wrong’ About Steve Nash in 2004

The Dallas Mavericks braintrust never imagined that Steve Nash would develop into a Hall of Fame point guard, and elected not to re-sign him back in 2004. Whoops, says Mark Cuban. Per the Star-Telegram: “Cuban said when the Mavs decided not to re-sign then free agent point guard Steve Nash in 2004, it was because he thought Nash was physically spent and on the downside of his career. But Nash proceeded to win the NBA’s Most Valuable Player awards in 2005 and ’06 with the Phoenix Suns, and at age 38, he’s in his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers. ‘I just hate being wrong, and we were wrong,’ Cuban said. ‘And (the decision to let Nash go) was all based on what we thought physically would end up happening, and it didn’t work out that way. But I’m happy for Steve. He’s a great guy. He’s done amazing things.’ Cuban stopped short of saying he regrets not re-signing Nash.”

I wonder what the conversation was like between he and Dirk after he let Nash go.

Well, the big signing in 2004 for the Mavs was Erick Dampier. While he didn’t amount to much, his contract’s final year was used to acquire Tyson Chandler. So, it may have been wrong not to sign Steve thinking back now, but I don’t think he regrets ending up with the center that was essential in the mavs title run.

A Nash & Nowitzki dynasty would’ve been fun crazy to see

    far from a dynasty lol

Right? lol. Maybe 2 rings instead of 1 but no dynasty.

Actually, considering Nash’s spondylolisthesis, it’s a miracle he’s still playing ball at a high level. I could see the Mavs thinking back in 04 that he might have a shortened career. I really don’t see how he plays like he does.

Hindsight is always 20/20. The mavs had no foresight of how the new rule changes that would outlaw handchecking would play into nash career and the rest of the nba. Under the old rules, nash was expendable. He got abused in the playoffs by physical pg’s. That was the main reason the spurs was trying to trade parker for kidd. Also, the mavs just came off a series with portland where nick van had his way with nash. Cuban has no reason to apologize but nba fans need to smarten up. With the outlawing of hand-checking, the nba became a different game. 75% of the so-called “great” young pg’s would be bench players had they played with the old rules.

like he was wrong about missing out on Deron Williams was a worse option for his team this summer. Let’s see if it takes him 8 years to admit that
