Shane Battier Says LeBron is ‘One of the Few’ Who Could’ve Played at Duke

In a story about the relationship between LeBron James and his Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski, former Dookie Shane Battier claims that James is one of the few NBA All-Stars who could have thrived on Coach K’s squad. Per the Miami Herald: “You know what? LeBron could have played at Duke, and I don’t say that about a lot of guys,’ Battier said. ‘There are a lot of All-Stars who couldn’t have played at Duke. LeBron is one of the few All-Stars who could have played there and survived. You have to be mentally tough. You have to know the game — you can’t be some idiot out there, some dummy running around. You have to play for the team and be selfless. Those are all of LeBron James’ qualities.’ On Tuesday, the Heat plays the Charlotte Bobcats in a preseason game at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. It is the closest the Heat gets to Krzyzewski’s campus in Durham — just a few miles away. Krzyzewski hasn’t confirmed whether he will be attending the game, but James said on Monday that it would ‘be awesome’ if he did. ‘We have a great relationship,’ James said. ‘We’ve been together since ’05, and our relationship has grown every year. I’ve grown from a young man into a man into a leader of that team. He’s helped me develop that. I give a lot of credit to him.’ Krzyzewski has said that the Blue Devils scouted James back in high school, although it was a foregone conclusion that he would be skipping college and going straight to the NBA. Krzyzewski said he never saw James play live until his rookie year with the Cavaliers. Yet when the two met with Team USA, James gravitated to the successful coach. Perhaps it was Krzyzewski’s sense of humor. Krzyzewski recalls seeing James in the locker room one day. He noticed the huge ‘Chosen 1′ tattoo on James’ back and went up him. ‘He is a massive human being. And a gifted athlete. Those guys all have tattoos like crazy,’ Krzyzewski said. ‘In one light moment, he had his shirt off in the locker room, and I said, ‘chosen one?’ And he said ‘yep.’ And I said, ‘I think I’m going to get one of those.’ And he look at me and leaned over and says ‘No, coach, there’s only one chosen one.’”

    So true!!!

Judging from his interviews, I don’t think he’d be smart enough to go to such an esteemed university with an emphasis on academics. Now the countdown to see who calls anyone saying anything negative about anything a “hater” begins…

  • Anon

I disagree. He might not be or sound like the sharpest crayon in the box but he is no blithering idiot I believe

  • shockexchange

Is Battier implying that there are guys who start in the L who (i) do not have a high basketball IQ and (ii) could not have started at Duke? Blasphemous!

  • MikeC.

Lloyd is a hater. You know his major would have been 1 year of post moves before leaving tread marks on his way to the draft. Hater. Lol.

And yet, Boozer played at Duke.

  • Dymez

I agree with Shane. One thing for sure is, LeBron is probably the smartest basketball player in the league, I’m not talking academically, I’m talking strictly basketball IQ. Secondly, the guy is unselfish, which is a big part of Coach K’s system. And last, LeBron is one of those few superstars who are actually coachable. He loves to learn from great basketball minds and would take advantage of the opportunity to learn from someone as knowledgable as Coach K. Not a lot of current players have all these qualities — maybe 1 or 2 — but not all together.

  • Mr. Black

He suggested that there are few All-Stars that would have thrived in the Duke system. He didn’t say they weren’t talented enough to play at Duke.

  • shockexchange

His exact words were, “You have to be mentally tough. You have to know the game — you can’t be some idiot out there, some dummy running around.” “Knowing the game and not being a dummy” is a form of talent. Is it not?

  • Jerome

Gotta love elitism. Hope this isn’t another shot at the Fab5. I bet Buford Ellington Duke would’ve loved to have LeBron on his “squad”.
I used to be a big fan if Duke until I learned about the dirty south.

  • allen op

    so, what about Corey Maggette???

Shane Battier knows Ray Allen is gonna be on the other wing this year spotting up so he’s trying to put his bid in now!!! Next, D-Wade is going to be his favorite slasher in the league. Battier is no dummy! I see what you did there Shane!

  • Dymez

LOL! Yes, but you missed the ‘point’ of his statement. He’s saying LeBron is one of the few superstars who could have played at Duke. He’s talking perennial all-stars, Boozer’s not a superstar by any means, but he’s a great guy to plug into your offense as a 2nd, 3rd, even 4th option. Which is why he fit in so well at Duke and won a National Championship.

  • bike

According to Jalen Rose…nah, won’t go there.

    Shane’s a smartguy

  • RM

You do realize that less than 5% of the student population at Duke is from the South? And not everyone from the South chooses to follow in some of the simple minded bigotry that stained our past!

  • Junior Taylor

What is so special about Duke anyway? People act like you have to be some kind of ivy-league scholar to go to that sh*tty school. I much rather go to a school where I can be the man and get all the shots because I’m greedy like that.

  • Cameron

Haha, was thinking the same thing.

  • Clos1881

So dukes the marines now? I guess that’s why they recruit guys like Chris duhon and William Avery because great players can’t survive there

  • Juicy 757

Good to see how humble LeBron is there at the end

  • Juicy 757

“You know what? I could not have played in an all-star game, and I
don’t say that about a lot of guys,’ Battier said. ‘There are a lot of Dookies who could have played in the ASG. I’m one of the few Dookies who couldn’t have played there and survived.

well since lebron is not a UNCLE TOM there is no way he could play at duke

  • brad09′

ur telling me lebron cant pass 2 theater arts classes and 2 communication classes?

  • Chukaz

Josh McRoberts, JJ Redick, and Sheldon Parker-Williams starred at duke. Nuff said…

  • hillbilly

Battier’s right. A guy like LeBron would’ve fit right in at Douche University.

  • Lloyd

Didn’t say he was an idiot, but Duke is a school that emphasizes academics. Judging from his interviews, he seems like one of those guys who can barely piece together a good sounding sentence and who tries too hard to sound smarter than he is. DRose is also a good example of an athlete who doesn’t sound too bright. And it’s not hating to have an opinion gentlemen.

  • BuenoWayno1

i hate to throw around labels but whenever people talk about Duke the word “Elitist” keeps coming up and judging from what jalen rose had to say about them, i guess those words aren’t too far from the truth.

Smartest in the leagu? not even close you have WAAAY too many guys with elite BB IQ’s Pau Gasol,Chris Paul,Steve Nash,Manu Ginobli lightyears beyond Lebrons Mental skillset in Basketball.. These are guys with half of Lebrons Athleticisim and still perennial positive producing players.

  • Dymez

Are you serious? Light years beyond LeBron’s basketball IQ? Pau Gasol, who Phil Jackson kept cussing out for not being in the right spots or making the right plays in specific situations until his last day in LA? Manu Ginobili, who Gregg Poppovich STILL shakes his head on the bench when he makes his 3 to 4 bonehead plays per game? Steve Nash, who still can’t get the concept of team defense? I would give you Chris Paul, which is why I said probably, but even Chris Paul admitted in London this summer that LeBron James can do everything that he can do, in terms of playing point guard. How can someone say LeBron James doesn’t have a high basketball IQ? That’s just plain blasphemous.

  • MikeC.

He wouldn’t need to actually pass the classes as long as he passed them long enough to be eligible for March Madness. Then it’s time to stop going to class and get ready for the draft.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

You guys never went to Duke so you just don’t understand what he’s talking about… it’s really esoteric.

  • The Mauve Avenger

Could it be he’s tired of seeing UK get all these blue chips and is putting in a good word for Duke?

    Uncle Bron Bron?

Esoterically speaking, Shane is the Duke of puke.

  • danpowers

you forgot granger, that guy is a freakin rocket scientist lol

  • danpowers

yup, just imagine guys like marbury, rider, westbrook, iverson or cousins at duke. if somebody filmed that behind the scenes that would be the only reality tv shower ever i would have watched lol

  • Flybird Fly

Yea because Grant Hill and Elton Brand were well trained role players not superstars. Kyrie Irving right now is a role player not a superstar.

SHUUUUUUT UP!!!! You don’t know what your talking about.
