Andrew Bynum Says Not Playing Until January ‘Was the Original Plan’

The news that Andrew Bynum might not play again until January was seen by everyone as a setback for the Sixers’ big fella. Well, everyone but Andrew Bynum. Per CSN Philly: “It’s better than when I started, but it’s still not there yet,’ Bynum said. Nevertheless, the long awaited update from the Sixers on the status of their big offseason acquisition now has a timeline and maybe this time it is actually a defined one. After initially being ruled out for three weeks at the start of training camp, Bynum has yet to practice or take part in basketball-related activities. According to the Sixers’ latest timeline, Dec. 10 is the target date for Bynum to make his practice debut. After that, the team says Bynum will need one to four weeks of practice time until he can join the Sixers for a game. In fact, Bynum told reporters before Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Wells Fargo Center that he has moved on to Phase II of his rehab from a bone bruise. [...] According to Bynum, the latest timeline is not a ‘setback.’ Actually, said Bynum, the plan all along was to take his time with the injury. ‘It’s not a setback. It really was the original plan,’ Bynum said. ‘I was talking to my doctor and he said it would take eight to 12 weeks. That’s a few months’ time. I’m feeling better every day, and we took an MRI on Nov. 5 and it showed that the bone bruise is getting better. [...] I want to get out there and I want to play,’ Bynum added, explaining that he would be able to go if this were the playoffs.”

“He would be able to go if this were the playoffs.” But instead he’ll just sit on his ass for the next month and collect his paycheck?

And well before this season started, Bynum was thought to be playing right now, and Dwight Howard was expected to be out until December/January. Isn’t that something? Are the rest of the league’s GMs really that stupid, or does the Lakers front office have guys in dark sunglasses and black leather gloves that “makes stuff happen?” Should’ve at least got Pau Gasol put in the deal.

His original plan? Maybe. The 76′ers original plan? Definitely not.

You have to look at it from the Sixers perspective. Before they invest 80 milli in a potentially franchise changing player, they have to be sure they get him back on the court at as close to 100% as possible. If not, they run the risk of not only destroying a huge asset in the long run, but also ruin this season as well. Plus this extra time allows them to truly evaluate whether this is a true long term issue before making an investment.
