DeMarcus Cousins Says Referee Gary Zielinski Swore at Him

Sacramento Kings forward DeMarcus Cousins was ejected on Saturday night, and he claims that it was completely unfair. Cousins says that referee Gary Zielinski initiated the trouble by swearing at him. Per the Sac Bee: “Cousins, who was called for his second technical foul and ejected in the third quarter of the Kings’ win over Utah, said Monday he said nothing inappropriate and it was referee Gary Zielinski who was out of line. ‘The referee cursed at me,’ Cousins said. ‘He told me to go (expletive) ask the other referee (about the first technical foul). I was going to say something back, kept my cool and walked away and still end up with a technical. So I still don’t understand.’ Cousins said after Monday’s practice he ‘didn’t say a word’ to Zielinski to warrant the technical foul. Cousins was hit with the first technical when he bumped Enes Kanter, then slapped the ball out of his hand after the whistle. With five technicals, Cousins is tied with New York’s Carmelo Anthony for the most in the league. A player is suspended when he reaches 16 technical fouls in a season. And what did Cousins see when he watched the replay? ‘It’s DeMarcus Cousins, so let’s ‘T’ him up,’ Cousins said. Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie told Cousins that the league would not rescind the technical that led to his ejection. ‘I don’t know why because I really don’t know what I did, but, hey, it’s their decision,’ Cousins said. [...] Cousins was asked if he has considered not speaking to officials, but he didn’t seem to like the idea. ‘If that’s the case, before every game, they shouldn’t say, ‘If you have a problem, come talk to us,’ Cousins said, ‘because apparently we can’t talk to them.’”

He doesn’t strike me as the kind of dude who would lie. He’s an emotional cat. We all know Stern loves to protect his precious referees.

  • Shifty

This is the new generation Rasheed Wallace.

  • Muede

So when exactly will the fine for Cousins come for “critizing” referees??
    Stupid techs….

Why can’t referees swear? Its not like the referee said “f**K you” and attacked him directly, he, according to Cousins, said “go fu*king ask the other referee”. That’s how most NBA players talk, sometimes even towards referees. Cousins needs to stop getting his knickers in a bunch because another grown man dared give him a stern warning with swear words.

  • roscoe

look in the mirror dcuz… the refs can & will kick you out of games until you grow up.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Referees swear, nothing happens. Players swear, technical fouls are called. That’s the problem.

That’s not true. A lot of players get away with swearing at referees. Cousins just happened to piss off and get too close to this particular referee.

  • Jay Cutler

You clearly have never watched a basketball game. Players yell, swear and glare at referees routinely.

  • spit hot fiyah

very possible, if he gets a bad rep with the refs it’s over, remember when rasheed got one for looking at a ref lol

This guy needs to work on his maturity. It’s, what, his third year in the league? And he’s still crying about justifiable technical fouls?

  • bike

If Cousins can’t see that he’s bringing this kind of thing on him by now, then the Kings need to do something drastic about it. It’s nonsense for teams to defend players that act like this over and over again.

  • Shifty

Yes I do remember that actually. Man gotta feel sorry for shred. In these days well before he retired he couldn’t show any emotion or else he wud get T’d up. BALL DON’T LIE!

  • bailsonya

As someone who was watching this live it looked to me like Cuz made a move towards the ref out of frustration. Like a “make you flinch type” body gesture. It was right then that he was hit with his second T. He was having a great game and had just posterized Favors. get it together man.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

And they are routinely given technical foul calls.

  • 23

If a player was actually given a tech everytime he swore, there would be 10 technicals every game. Quit trying to make it seem like the refs have a choke hold on the game man. It wasnt demarcus’ first technical and it definitely wont be his last. Hes probably a really good genuine dude, but he has no control over his own emotions whatsoever.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Rarely has a player in the last 21 years since I’ve been watching basketball looked at a referee, swore and not been given a technical foul. Rarely.

  • 23

Ok well of course if they throw in a staredown of COURSE thats a technical! That’s an attempt at intimidating/threatening the officials. If I was a ref and a player stared me down I’d let it slide. If they cursed out of frustration I’d probably let it slide ‘depending on the context’ but if they stared me down,PLUS cursed!??? Isn’t that a textbook technical foul?

  • 23

You also gotta take the context into account. By demarcus’ own admission the ref didn’t even call him out! Demarcus sounds like a kid in college complaining to his mom that his professor swore. COME ON NOW! Is demarcua really the type of dude offended by swearing!???

  • 23

Doubt it. Rasheed wouldn’t be offended if a ref used a “swear word”. He wouldn’t be crying about it either.

    That’s quite an understatement.

  • Shifty

I’m talking about the fact he’s getting T’d up for a lot of things. Not his reactions to swear words.

  • Spetsnaz

U obviously haven’t watched any games with Reggie, Kobe, MJ, Shaq, Sheed, Zo, the Knicks under Pat Reilly etc etc etc

  • VanCityBBall

i want to believe him so bad but it’s tough… although in this inperticular case this was more of a reputation call if anything imo… its crazy how much potential he still has left in him if he just calmed down a little

  • Mike Mihalow

Since when was the word “hell” considered swearing? 1946? Grow some balls.

  • pposse

a new nickname is in order, DeMarcus Nephew. Until he decides to grow up, this must be his name.
