Deron Williams Downplays Brooklyn Nets’ Win Over New York Knicks

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The original cross-town matchup was wiped out by Hurricane Sandy, but last night, the Knicks and Nets finally did battle. And it certainly lived up to the unrelenting pre-game hype.

Brooklyn emerged victorious in overtime, and their fans went home with the bragging rights for now. Just ask minority team owner Jay-Z.

According to Nets superstar point guard Deron Williams, though, it was just one win with no special significance.

Per the NY Daily News:

His contributions ended at the free throw line in the final seconds, when Williams was showered with his first “M-V-P” chant as a member of the Nets. Choosing Brooklyn over Dallas never seemed like a better decision than after a statement victory over the crosstown rivals. “This is what they talked about, this is what they visualized,” Williams said after scoring 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field, with six rebounds. “This was a playoff-type atmosphere. It was a great game to be a part of.” Williams again didn’t shoot well – perhaps a result of hurting his wrist Friday – but he compensated with pin-point passes, particularly to Brook Lopez, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Less than a year after dropping 38 points against Jeremy Lin, Williams outplayed Raymond Felton – who was 3-for-19 from the field.

“This is what we’ve been dreaming about since I’ve been here,” Avery Johnson said. Still, Williams made sure to throw some cold water on the optimism. “It’s one game. It was a good win for us. But we still have to play (the Knicks) three more times, maybe also in the playoffs,” he said. “So we didn’t win the championship of New York. We won a game, and it was a great win for us.”

The victory pushed Brooklyn past New York in the standings, giving them the edge not just in the city, but more importantly, in the Atlantic Division.

December 19 is the date of the rematch, this time in Manhattan at Madison Square Garden.

Looks like the beginnings of a great rivalry.

The energy in the arena was electric last night…. Good Night of Basketball in NYC last night…

Joe “where did u go in the 4th quarter” Johnson almost cost BRKLN last night.

I know Avery is trying to trust his shooting guard in the clutch, but whatever 4th quarter virus Bron bron had, JJ has it.

  • Anthony Dixon

actually Joe has been one of the best 4rth quarter players this season so far

  • spit hot fiyah

hope they play in the first round, make it happen stern!

  • roscoe

not last night when I watched him… turnover in a clutch moment… dribbled the ball off a defender…. took a bad shot… he disappeared… of course, imo.

Co-sign big time, even though my Knicks lost. First time in my life that I never joined in on the ‘Broooooooklyn’ chants.

u know i am harder on dwill than anyone on these msg boards, but i thought he did a great job down the stretch albeit he did not shoot well.

BK Nets’ early success has to make people revisit the CP3 v. DWill discussion. DWill has dominated the head-to-head matchups and he has the Nets in the discussion for the Eastern Conference Finals. It looks like DWill has CP3′s number.

They play December 11th at Barclays though.

  • roscoe

    is it beer thirty already?

    cp3 >>>> dwill

  • shockexchange

According to head-to-head matchups, DWill has outplayed CP3. The last game it was “no contest.”

  • Mike Jones

The reason he is downplaying the win is because they know they stole that game. 3 minutes to go in the 4th knicks are up 5 and carmelo anthony is feeling, had scored his teams last 17 points, then all of a sudden ray ‘hogg the ball’ felton decided that he is the best closer on the knicks, and took the last 6 shots in regulation and miss them all.

It was extremely painful to watch, it is fair enough he is an nba player that can score the ball occasionally but really if you are 3-19 why are you still shooting when anthony had over 30.

    Extremely painful.
But hey nice win the for nets, as this is there first win over a real contender.

    11/23/2012 – BKN (86) vs. LAC (76)

    cp3 5/11 FG, 2/4 3PT, 2/3FT, 5REB, 9AST, 2STL, 2TO, 6PF, 14PTS, 36M

    dwill 3/10 FG, 1/5 3PT, 4/4FT, 3REB, 8AST, 1STL, 3TO, 4PF, 11PTS, 37M

    is that no contest???

in the 4th they shut cp3 down, but that ain’t the whole story.

LAC got their young hearts broken by OKC in OT & have been reeling or doubting themselves ever since.

Using “statistics” to destroy the Shock Exchange’s argument? What a dirty trick. As a matter of full disclosure, could you provide the stats for the rest of their head-to-head matchups as well … as the theme from Jeopardy plays at in finitum …

  • roscoe

    what is “no gracias”?

  • shockexchange

    Good answer Sco Sco
