Jason Richardson Says Photographers Shouldn’t Be Near the Court

The annual gripe from NBA players and coaches about the proximity of photographers and camera folk to the court is here once again. Jason Richardson voiced his frustration after spraining his left ankle by stepping on a cameraman’s foot. Per the Philly Inquirer: “Doug Collins often has bemoaned the presence of photographers along the baseline, and on Sunday, when he lost shooting guard Jason Richardson to a sprained left ankle in the first quarter against the New York Knicks, the 76ers coach had yet another reason to complain. However, it was Richardson, not Collins, who did the talking. ‘They really don’t belong down there – you see what happens,’ said Richardson, who suffered the sprain when he stepped on a cameraman’s foot at Madison Square Garden. ‘It creates all kinds of problems for players. There’s got to be a better way.’ Richardson was hurt less than two minutes into the game with the Sixers trailing, 5-2. X-rays of his ankle found no broken bones, but he left the arena with his foot in a walking boot.’”

I have to agree, they should figure something about that, put them to the sides but not right by the basket.

He’s totally right. They don’t need to be close, to get ‘close ups’. These cameras now a days have massive lenses that are incredibly fast, with 20+ megapixel images. There’s no reason they can’t move 5 feet back, at least.

I think it really is a problem. Just during one half of the OKC game the other night, I saw three separate instances where a player got tangled up in the media under the basket and fell into them. Very dangerous.

That camera man definitely paid for his shot lol. Right in the twig and berries.

The League definitely needs to do something about this. The players are getting injured enough, no need to have them getting injured tripping over cameramen.

If the league is making money off of it, it won’t stop. Jason Richardson should know this.

Didn’t Darren Collison get injured by stepping on a photographers foot? Yeah they really don’t need to be that close to the court.
