Kobe Bryant Reacts to D-III Player Jack Taylor Scoring 138 Points

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Jack Taylor, a Division III guard for Grinnell College, did something last night that blew even Kobe Bryant away.

Taylor scored an NCAA record 138 points, taking 108 shots in the process, and hitting 27 threes (on 71 attempts from deep) along the way.

It wasn’t just Kobe who was impressed — others around the NBA couldn’t quite wrap their heads around the fact that someone scored that many points, let alone took that many shots.

But it was Bryant — he of the legendary 81-point game back in 2006 against the Toronto Raptors — who had the best (and funniest reaction) to the feat.

Per ESPN:

Bryant: “Really? Wow. That’s impressive. That’s crazy. I don’t care what level you’re at. Scoring 138 points is pretty insane. How many threes did he shoot?” Reporter: 71. Bryant: “Holy sh–. How many points did they score as a team?” Reporter: 179. Bryant: “What?!” Reporter: No other starter had double figures. Bryant: “That’s incredible.” Reporter: Dude on the other team scored 71 points and lost. Bryant: “That’s amazing. He must have been wearing the Mambas, man. Only Mambas have no conscious to shoot the ball like that.”

Reporter: If you did that, would people be celebrating you? Bryant: “Would people be celebrating me if I scored 138 points? You know how it is, some people would, some people wouldn’t. They can all kiss my ass as I’m sure he feels the same way. If you score 138 points, you kind of have a license to tell people to f*ck off.”

Jack Taylor’s team bested Faith Baptist Bible College 179-104. By comparison, Kobe Bryant only managed to score a pedestrian 25 points last night, in a Lakers win over the visiting Brooklyn Nets.

    Great D..
    Not.

“What these young bloods have to understand, that this game, has always been, and will always be, about buckets” – Bill Russell.
“I get buckets” – Jack Taylor.

Anybody notice how Kobe is a “bad @**” in all interviews since Phil Jackson left the Lakers??? He NEVER used to talk to the media like this when Phil was there…. That’s not classic kobe

  • Dagger

108 shots. Impressive to even have the stamina to put up that many shots, but it’s a team game. I’d rather celebrate the people who make everyone around them better, rather than those who just go and get theirs.

Gonna be a long day on this post. Getcha popcorn.

  • Rkirby

Kobe sounds like he’s gonna try to score 138 on someone

  • MikeC.

Nobody thought to take a hard foul?

  • Nick

Best comment ever…i cant stop laughin my ass off!

It was a D3 game, and the level of play is pretty weak. From the highlights I have seen, there was no defense, and he didn’t play any either. It was impressive, but at the same time let’s not get carried away. ESPN had him in a comparison table with Wilt and Kobe lol….

He had to put the team on his back.

  • Redd

    27 3s on 71 attempts? I can’t believe people are impressed.

  • Ben Ireland

No matter the level of competition, 138 is insane… Give me 40 minutes against 5 year olds, and I still would push the time to get there… The timeframe is so tight, and when the other team has possessions too, it’s crazy. And he’s playing DIII yeah, but not useless players, these are still likely accomplished high school players for the most part. It’s damn impressive to me anyway.

  • LeroyShonuff

Soo you go play in a D3 game and score 138 then… Stop hating

  • LeroyShonuff

138!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t care how he got it, he got it!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    108 shots lmao

  • mhm

Stephen A. Smith and Skip feel differently about this guys.

  • bike

You kinda have to feel for the kid on the other team that had 70 points on something like 34 of 44 shooting. Hardly any mention of him.

  • Dymez

I’d just like to know how he managed to get up 108 shots. Whole TEAMS don’t even get the chance to attempt 108 shots. Mike D’Antoni’s 7 seconds or less ain’t got sh!t on this.

  • hushabomb

@Hursty, I can picture Jack and Bill sayin that. So does Jack get a Pepsi Max commercial now????

Its also the call of the year.

  • danpowers

try that in a game, running up and down the court against a defense (no matter how weak) then you know whats so impressive about that. the kid seems to have endless stamina

  • M3Ls

You win the internet for the month

  • M3Ls

    +100

  • Redd

Yeah thats the one thing that I did get impressed by. Shooting shots is not impressive but to run up & down all game in a fast paced game is pretty impressive.

I’m not hating, no matter what dude has some physical feats that are impressive. But to say 27 out of 71 is good is grossly wrong.

this isn’t an impressive performance even a little. read this, http://burnstyler.wordpress.com/2012/11/20/138-points-in-a-single-game-what-the-box-score-tells-us/

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

if you read the link i posted on here. you won’t be impressed by this performance either.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they were force feeding him shots. apparently it wasn’t even fun to watch it was so ridiculous. not impressive for a team to give up on good basketball just to try and break records.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they were force feeding him. anyone with a decent jumper could have done this.

  • Moose

Jack Taylor: Tell em gimme fifty million or I’ma quit.

  • danpowers

just saw it. but still, i couldnt take 108 shots let alone 71 threes during a game. they would have to carry me out the gym on a stretcher lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he’s conditioned to do this. if you were on his team you would be in the same situation. trust that this isn’t very special when you take into account that was the whole entire goal of the team.

  • danpowers

as i said above, i couldnt do that n i spend much time in the gym. anyway, after i read nbks link it looks less impressive tho. that game couldnt have much to do with basketball anyway

  • 23

Talk about Buzz kill. You got High standards..100+ plus pts isn’t impressive?? What does impress you? 200+? Forget every other stat. 138 points is impressive. Even if it was rec league. Do you realize you have higher standards than Kobe?? Lol your like a basketball snob.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Did you read the link I posted about this game and WHY he was able to do this? Obviously not

  • LeroyShonuff

pure lies… if anybody with a decent jumper could do it then they would have done it. Respect that man accomplishment. if it was that easy, then every gunner would have done it. Not only did he do it, but his team won. Stop hating

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Read the article I posted. They were giving up open layups so he could force up 3′s. it hasn’t been done because its stupid to do. They were just so much better than the team they were playing that it didn’t matter.

  • Waggle

Wow, thanks for posting this link. Actually watching the footage explaining the game plan makes me sick. Mockery of basketball. What kind of coaching staff is this?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It’s a very good grab at attention staff.

  • danpowers

yup. anyway, its just some funny sidenote / oddity

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

No doubt.. I just want people to take this for what it really is

  • LeroyShonuff

Let me guess… NBK rated this comment down???

  • LeroyShonuff

That’s not his fault. He still had to make them shots. How he came about it is irrelevant. The fact is he did it. The other team should of stopped him

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

The other team was horrible. Do you see how many turnovers their guards had? Did you read the link? This seriously isn’t impressive. He shot a bad %. It’s not like he was on fire. He was just hucking to epic proportions. The impressive aspect of this is how well conditioned they must be.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

What was wrong with the other team? At some point, I’m fouling him pretty hard. Even on 3 point shots. The more he tries to score, the harder I foul him. His coach would either have to take him out to keep him from getting hurt in a game where his team is up by 70 or my team would punish him.

    Yes he did.

Actually, it happened after Eagle, Col. when he realized that all-american image was history. He started easing curse words into interviews. It’s been going on for at least three years now, maybe four. I and others have mentioned it here.

  • pops

When I heard about this I was impressed, but now knowing that he took over 100 shots it doesn’t impress me anymore.
