Mamba Back

Kobe nets a triple-double to lift the Lakers past the Rockets.

by Sean Ceglinsky / @seanceglinsky

For those under the impression that Kobe Bryant might be on the verge of entering the downside of his career, think again. The 34-year old looked anything but past his prime on Sunday.

The Black Mamba finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists for the Los Angeles Lakers in a 119-108 victory over the Houston Rockets in front of a packed house at Staples Center. That’s right: Kobe messed around and got a triple-double, the 18th of his career and first in more than two years.kobe bryant

In the locker-room afterward, beat writers along with other media-types huddled around his cubicle and talked amongst themselves as they patiently waited for him to emerge following his post-game routine. Once there, he attempted to downplay the effort as just another game.

Typical Bryant. Always too cool for school.

Deep down, however, the accomplishment must have meant a bit more to him. After all, the last time he stuffed the stat sheet like he did on Sunday was back on Nov. 3, 2010. No more dry spell. Moreover, the triple-double was a statement-maker. Bryant is back. He’s still got some gas left in the tank.

“I’m a scorer, not a triple-double player,” Byant said.

Bryant entered the game as the League’s leading scorer at 26.9 points per game, further proof of his potential demise being nothing more than meaningless fodder created by his skeptics.

His haters might want to take a look at these numbers too, Bryant is shooting more than 53 percent from the field, close to 92 percent from the line and right around 41 percent from three-point range.

James Harden is second in the NBA in scoring at 26.7 per game. Instead of turning things into duel with the him, Bryant decided to go the jack-of-all-trades route on Sunday. Mission accomplished, by the way.

Just ask Chandler Parsons. It was primarily his job to contain Bryant. “The first quarter he was just creating, coming off pick and roll and just distributing,’’ the Rockets swingman said. “He’s obviously going to get his points. He’s a great player and it’s definitely a different Kobe this year with the ball in his hands instead of playing without it.”

The Rockets might have known they were in trouble when Bryant opened up the game on fire. In the first 12 minutes, he had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Not surprisingly, the Lakers took a 40-29 lead.

It was more of the same in the second quarter. More of Bryant putting in work. He dictated the pace of play and the Lakers had a 68-60 advantage at the break behind his 11 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds in the first half alone.

Bryant went into his scorer’s mode, albeit briefly, thereafter and scored 7 quick points. Entering the fourth quarter with a 98-87 lead, the triple-double was well within reach given the fact that he had 18 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds. Injured teammate Steve Nash appeared to be excited about the prospect of Bryant accomplishing the feat and was seen dancing behind the bench during a timeout after a Kobe assist.

At the 5:45 mark of the final quarter, Bryant notched the triple-double with an offensive rebound. He made his exit from the game for good mere minutes later to stirring ovation from the crowd, which included the chant, “MVP! MVP! MVP!” Just another day at the office for an ageless wonder.

In summary, Bryant had this to say about his triple-double: “It’s cool. It’s not something I try to go after. It’s always cool when it happens.”

Sunday was one of those cool times, apparently.

(Horry Jr voice) I want to thank the Shock Exchange for my new resurgence. Previously I was surrounded by sycophants and hangers-on who told me what I wanted to hear – “You led the Lakers to 5 chips … You’re better than MJ.” However the Shock Exchange told me what I needed to hear – “You’re a chuckwagaon … 30 shots/game at a 40% clip is beneath a professional … You’re a glorified Robert Horry.” Since, I have improved my shot selection, learned how to make an entry pass and significantly reduced the “Horry Jr Differential.” In Honor of my mentor, I now speak in 3rd person. Horry Out.

  • Junior Taylor

Where is KD’s article after he got his 1st trip dub?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    narcissism

  • Kadavour

i like this new pace for the Lakers. Kobe’s a surprise 1/8 into the regular season.

  • LakeShow

KB’s never been a walking trip doub like J-Kidd, Bron, and Boris Diaw (sorry I love that fatty) but he is a complete player that can do everything on the court. It’s nice that he’s able to toss the ball to his mates at an elite level when needed, and he puts his mind to it.

He’s averaging above his career averages across the board and all this at 34 years of age, in his 17th season in the L…. Phheewwwie!

  • Buckets

    MVP!

    @shockexchange:disqus

Dude, your trolling is super pathetic.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    you know what’s funny……?

    .

this….”I tried to get Kobe to do both for numbers of years, and he could. But his first instinct is to beat the guy that’s in front of him.” – Phil Jackson.

  • LakeShow

Phil, as usual, says it best.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

until the whole Mike D’Antoni system happened. I think Kobe is going to be incredibly less selfish in this new situation. simply because he doesn’t have time to be selfish. all of those slow sets that let his need to score fester are gone, he gets to play on pure instinct. which, again, is terrifying.

  • Bubbles

You are by far the worst poster on slam. You are like an unfunny Philosopher.

  • shockexchange

Apparently Horry Jr doesn’t think so … he has adopted everything the Shock Exchange has said, including the “3rd person talk.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Shock Exchange should keep posting his thoughts, because it proves his theory that if someone say something, the credit should go to that someone, without proof that it was even considered.
    .
now, instead of you taking credit for every improvement a star player makes, i can take credit for every time you think you are right.
    .
    cheers

  • shockexchange

C’mon dude, how else could Horry Jr improve his shot selection / basketball IQ that quickly? At a minimum He is listening to his critics and has gained a sense of humor – “Mamba Out,” hilarious – and if he keeps it up, he’ll be hoisting the O’Brien Trophy in June.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

for one, his basketball iq is already higher than just about everyone else, he just chooses not to use it a lot of the time.
    .
in terms of shot selection, uhm, in the Princeton offense he was only catching the ball in scoring position, which as i said all off-season and so on, would be the only benefit of that offense (which i am NOT taking credit for being a genius or whatever it is you think you are when you are right about something, just saying), and now he’s playing in D’Antoni’s system, which doesn’t allow his need to shoot wily nily fester inside him while he watches plays set up. now he must shoot or pass and make quick decisions. which doesn’t leave room for the normal Kobe isolation contested 20 footers.
    .
there are reasons things happen. and NONE of them have ANYTHING to do with YOU or I.

  • bike

“Bryant is shooting more than 53 percent from the field, close to 92 percent from the line and right around 41 percent from three-point range.”
    Sweet. Baby. Jesus.

  • shockexchange

Real talk … Horry Jr’s play has been a sea change vis-a-vis his play in recent years. He is now playing like a highly skilled veteran 2 guard is expected to play. The Shock Exchange thinks Horry Jr’s dramatic shift can only be an attempt to silence his biggest critic.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

like i said, you are a narcissist.

  • shockexchange

To imply that Horry Jr is responding to his harshest critics … how is that narcissistic?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

“However the Shock Exchange told me what I needed to hear – “You’re a chuckwagaon … 30 shots/game at a 40% clip is beneath a professional”

    .

“The Shock Exchange thinks Horry Jr’s dramatic shift can only be an attempt to silence his biggest critic.”

    .
I mean, it’s pretty cut and dry.

  • shockexchange

I think you’re reading too much into the Shock Exchange’s last comment. That said, there is a dramatic change in Horry Jr’s play this year and it’s not physical … it mental. He’s actually playing like there are 4 other guys on the court with him. How would you explain it?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well considering I outlined that 2 comments ago…..

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange actually read that comment, but in an attempt to be nice, wanted to give you chance to redeem yourself. You imply that Horry Jr (i) has a high basketball IQ, though we couldn’t tell it through his play and (ii) miraculously, he decided to display it this year. My man we’re just going to have to agree to disagree. No player makes a 360 degree change like that unless it’s a response to harsh criticism. And with the sycophants in his ear all these years, he probably didn’t think there was anything wrong with the “pass to Horry Jr offense.”

  • Justin05

The same place his rings are at!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

YOU couldn’t tell it through his play. But YOUR point of view only matters to you. NOBODY else.

  • shockexchange

This was your exact comment “for one, his basketball iq is already higher than just about everyone else, he just chooses not to use it a lot of the time.” To say “he just chooses not to use it a lot of the time” implies that “a lot of times he plays like someone with a low BBall IQ.” When you go in on Horry Jr, it’s “analysis.” When the Shock Exchange is critical, he’s a “hater” or a “troll.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Never called you a hater or a troll. Flatly I said just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean nobody else can.

  • LakeShow

It’s funny how you keep referring to a top 10 all time player as “Horry Jr.” and you are just too stupid to know why people consider you are a “hater” or a “troll” lol…
Your hilarious man, keep it up. It’s pure laughs and good for the whole Slam fam to have a crazy like you around!

  • shockexchange

Just so you know, if you have two people who always agree, one of them is not necessary.

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange stands corrected. Either way, if this guy keeps playing like this, (i) L.A. will come out of the West, and (ii) dominate the Heat down low to take the cake.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Idk about them dominating the Heat, especially if Wade isn’t still 85 years old at that point but I agree with everything else

  • LakeShow

I don’t follow, but that’s typical with you… Your just too quick for me.

    ageless wonnder is the truth

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

everything his critics have on him….is gone this year…he is playing lights out…MVP?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    MVP?

  • Max

    In Miami?

  • Ben Ireland

I think the Shock Exchange should look at Kobe’s first three rings… He obviously has a huge basketball IQ… But he had the chips before the greatness, pretty much opposite what critics say of LeBron. Not to turn this into a LeBron thing, just pointing out the similarities. But Kobe wasn’t content with winning, he had to be the reason, so Shaq was sent out. And then Kobe proved he was an amazing scorer. Then he wanted to win again, and he proved his all around greatness with 2 more chips. Now he simply wants to win, so he’s making the correct play every time. He has the help around him now that he can defer without it being to Smush Parker… Big difference between giving the ball to Smush, or giving it to Dwight. Kobe’s incredibly gifted in every way for basketball, and easily a top 10 player of all time. Meanwhile, the Shock Exchange is easily in the top 10 worst posters of all time… So I guess you must have an equally gifted skill set. We’ll call you Troll Jr… Not quite the original, but getting there, my man !

  • shockexchange

As usual, he is benefitting from playing with “exceptionally more talent than the rest of the league,” so the “pass to Horry Jr Offense” won’t work. It’s sycophants like you who had him thinking 30 shots/game at a 40% clip was acceptable. You should thank the Shock Exchange for inspiring Horry Jr to step his game up.

  • ToldUso

Jesus, those Slam guys are really looking stupid picking Kobe over Wade now. Oh, wait…

  • Ben Ireland

Did you just learn the word sycophant or something?
Dude, your “as usual” was the exact opposite of everything I said… It was cos he had no talent around him that he shot like that. Notice you can pinpoint when that changed… Yeno, in 2008, when he got Pau… And won the MVP… And made the Finals… Kobe doesn’t give a &%$* what anyone thinks, he’s the only one who randomly curses during interviews for god’s sake ! If you think critics changed the way he played, you haven’t been paying attention.

  • shockexchange

How would you explain that airball he shot in the final seconds of a closeout playoff game against Utah in ’97? The play was designed to go to Shaq, but the 18 yr old rookie tried to be “the man.” He then shot three more airballs in OT of that game. He’s been a chuckwagon since he came into the L.

  • justin05

lol thanks for the shoutout Tolduso. I was one of the main ppl leading the Kobe charge. Looks like Drig, Lakeshow, and I were right already. Caboose and bamn are just stat nerds.

  • justin05

Lol well the ring was never HIS. Lebron and co. deserved them so sure, they’re in Miami haha

  • LakeShow

You remember that shot heard round the world on the 18th of April, 1775?

Paul Revere was such a dumb youngster.

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange gets the reference. But to quote that famous philosopher: “You are what are playa … you was who you was ‘fore here.” INTERPRETATION: Deep down Horry Jr wants to be “The Man,” even when that’s not his role … he proved that in Utah.

  • LakeShow

He proved that TO YOU in Utah. The rest of us on the outside of the insane asylum agree, he’s the man.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL, we are 1/10th through the year

  • justin05

More like 1/8 but I wasn’t going to bring that convo back up til half way through the season. Kobe is looking like a top 5 player so far and Wade is on the “chillin’ list” lol

  • justin05

Pure instinct is right. Black Mamba doesn’t seem like a funny nickname anymore.

  • LakeShow

I’ll wait for the eggs to hatch. I wasn’t expecting Kobe to be 50-40-90. And I know he won’t finish the year that way. But as you know, I truly find KB to be a notch above Wade all around minus some defensive aspects. And as you know, injuries were a big part of why I think that, and well, we all know why Wade is out…
Dudes got to stay healthy for me to view him above KB in any fashion.
Like you said, we have 78 more games to watch and find out the truth though.
