Los Angeles Lakers Say That Mike Brown’s Job is Safe

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

It’s early in the season, really early, but this remains worth noting: the Los Angeles Lakers (1-4) are currently the worst team in the Western Conference.

After losing in Utah last night, looking listless and clueless in the process, more loud and angry questions arose about head coach Mike Brown’s job security. According to Lakers’ management, though, they will remain patient, and continue to have confidence in their bench boss.

Per ESPN:

“You don’t start 0-3 for the first time since we’ve owned the franchise without being on top of it,” Lakers executive VP Jim Buss said. “No matter what, you have to be aware. That doesn’t mean change is coming. That just means you have to be aware.” But while fans and pundits have placed the blame for the Lakers’ early struggles on coach Mike Brown, Buss said he’s still very confident in his coach.

“I have no problems with Mike Brown at all,” Buss said. “He just works too hard and he’s too knowledgeable for this to be happening. So either the system is flawed or something’s going on. Or, like the Triangle, it’s very hard to pick up and understand. I’m not a basketball mind like he is or the players are, and the players are fine with it, so I just have to be patient.” [...] “Kobe [Bryant] and I have a relationship where he can just look at me and say, ‘Everything’s cool,’” Buss said. “So yesterday during practice, I gave Kobe a quick glance, and everything was cool.”

Regardless of the front-office’s reassurances, there is palpable tension in the Laker locker room. Kobe Bryant is seething, fans and media are losing patience, and it’s clear that the team needs to turn things around quickly.

Despite some head-scratching decisions, and his inability to get his wildly-talented team on the right track, Mike Brown’s job doesn’t appear to be in jeopardy.

But it’s fair to say that Brown’s seat is growing hotter by the day.

Kobe’s saying to himself ‘another two games like last night and I am gonna start chucking like no one has ever seen before. And no one is gonna stop me.’

  • LeroyShonuff

This is like when a owner or gm in football gives the head coach a vote of confidence… the clock is ticking

  • Mendel

Get rid of this bum ASAP. I cant believe they hired him anyway. Get Jerry Sloan, hell no to Dantoni, or maybe the master plan is to waste this season, kill kobe and then hope Phil is up for another run.

  • http://twitter.com/DPisWill DePaul Williams

Yea he’ll turn into the Kobe of when the last time they had a “super squad” with Malone, GP and Shaq….just jacking from anywhere lol

  • Caboose

Mike Brown’s job is safe? So are Miami’s title aspirations.

  • K_HOLIDAY

We need to go back and change Lebron’s position from SF to player coach for the years he and Mike Brown were together in Cleveland.

  • Caboose

Watch Kobe take 40 shots next game.

  • theDankerNuggets

I dont know if it’s that they have the wrong pieces, or that they haven’t got a handle on it yet but the princeton offense looks terrible. In my opinion, this roster needs a new look, World Peace and Steve Blake don’t seem to have the youthful energy and athleticism that they need to complement Kobe, Dwight, and Gasol.

  • brownssu

why did they even hire him, he’s a pathetic ,nervous joke of a coach…he should only coach bottom level teams. can’t understand how the lakers even hired him, they always pride themselves for going after top talent

  • SuperAr82

    no it’s not

  • idrees

they choose the fucking princeton offense over coach sloan?!

  • oglivy

The easiest thing to do when a talented team is struggling is to blame the coach for EVERYTHING. But the last season Phil was there, a beat-up Hornets team pushed the lakers to 7 games in the 1st rd, and then la was SWEPT rather convincingly by the Mavs. In the next season under new head coach Mike Brown, Denver pushed la to 7 games in the 1st rd, then LA lost to OKC in 5 games in the 2nd rd. So, Brown actually did 1 game better than Jackson without Odom (or a productive bench). Perhaps, the expectations this season are unrealistic. Having great individual talent on a single team, does not always translate into wins or titles, i.e. 2003-04 Lakers with Payton, Kobe, Malone, and Shaq.

The Lakers must choose : Mike Brown or Conference Finals!?

Sad to say that this is actually bad news for LA. #LAKERSANDJERRYSLOAN

  • LakeShow

    Hahahah!
    Good one!

  • charliewinning

No. Keep him in LA, where his incompetence keeps the rest of us from having to watch the Lakers succeed.

Jerry Sloan would provide a much greater stewardship to any team but San Antonio, Chicago, Boston, and Miami. In other words, he is a top five coach any time he tightens his tie. His offences would complement Nash & Howard perfectly. Theirs could be the primary PnR while Bryant & Gasol would be the second tandem. Sloan would be intelligent enough to implement plays which suit Bryant’s versatility and Gasol’s postcraft.

Mike Brown has provided none of these & a laughable rotation. His experimental lineups (even still, November 2012!) are wreaking havoc with the team’s flow. He would be a solid assistant coach, but I believe that that is his ceiling.

  • Conor

That was because Gasol’s fiancée cheated on him with Shannon Brown, and the latter was exposed. Remember Bynum’s comments regarding “trust”?

That, and Dallas was in an astounding zone.

    *The 2011 exit.

It isn’t a conflict of styles, it’s how LA’s been using their talent sets.

  • christianbullen

lol dude.. really?… thats why they lost? come on son.

  • jezzy

Nice man. I really like how Mike Brown carries himself, but his act doesn’t work in LA. People here panic everytime it rains and it turns lousy drivers into complete douches behind the wheel. AND along with every Lakers loss people panic. I say please let him go gracefully and get another stupid coach to win this Lakers championship. Clearly, none of the fucking players are responding to his coaching.

you do NOT need to have lots of basketball knowledge or to be a member of the buss family to know that this guy is about to lose his job

  • LordOzban

safe for how long? until they end up 1-10?

  • http://www.facebook.com/BadBluue Czakó Balázs

    Right now !!!

  • Stevie Weavie

how can he be safe?! His playbook is ‘Give it to Lebron and princeton offense, which they got another coach in to teach it (Eddie Jordan). Nate Mcmillian where are you bro?

  • Shinobi

There are coaches in this league that are all about bluff and no substance. Just trying to look cool, sucking up to their stars and nodding to the suits. Mike Brown is one of them. On the other hand you have honest, hard working people like Alvin Gentry (Hubbie Brown, Bill Fitch, Fratello back in the day…), capable of transforming s**t into Big Macs. No to mention the shame of a legend like Kareem not being able to even sniff a head coach position because he has cojones. But it’s just like everywhere else: suck-ups and con-artists will always find somebody to fool.

  • Kap

Anytime you say Metta World Peace is your backup SG you should lose your job immediately.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lakers fans, be intelligent, stop asking for Jerry Sloan. He is definitely not the guy you want coaching that team.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    no.

  • danpowers

lebron james said he will stay in cleveland untill he brings the city a championship, the thunder said they would keep james harden and howard said he never pushed the magic to fire van gundy. this headline seems to be of the same kind

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

please explain how Jerry Sloan’s FLEX offense caters to Dwight Howard? And please explain how Jerry Sloan and Dwight Howard would coexist. Considering ofcourse, Jerry Sloan and Deron Williams didn’t see eye to eye and Dwight Howard is even more of an adolescent.
    .
There is no reason to be excited about Jerry Sloan coaching the Lakers, unless you want to watch a really stressed out Lakers team. Jerry Sloan was successful in Utah, because he coached a small market team with small market egos. Even Karl Malone and John Stockton were lunch pale guys. The Lakers have 1 of those guys in their starting lineup, but he also happens to be the guy who brings a lunch pale to work on what he wants to work on, and Sloan ain’t changing him.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you should be asking for Mike D’Antoni.
    .
    Think about it.

  • Pedestrian Nightmare

    not so safe now…
