Los Angeles Lakers to Unveil Statue for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

This Friday, at long last, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will get the statue he publicly griped about not having. Per the Lakers’ team website: “Public is Invited to Ceremony Featuring Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, Jerry West, James Worthy, Pat Riley, Richard Lapchik, Eddie Doucette and Others to Honor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Prior to Unveiling STAPLES Center’s Newest Statue. The unveiling of a nearly 16’ tall, 1,500 lb. bronze statue of legendary Los Angeles Lakers and NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Star Plaza at STAPLES Center. The statue, created by renowned sculptors/artists Julie Rotblatt Amrany and Omri Amrany, will join other iconic sculptures of celebrated Los Angeles sports superstars Wayne Gretzky, Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, Jerry West, Chick Hearn and Oscar De La Hoya. The ceremony, which is open free to the public, will be highlighted by speeches from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and other individuals who were his teammates, colleagues and friends during his unprecedented career and will conclude with a climactic unveiling of the statue. Speakers include Stu Lantz (emcee), Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, James Worthy, Jerry West, Pat Riley, Eddie Doucette, Richard Lapchik, Jeanie Buss, Tim Leiweke. Former teammates, coaches along with friends and family of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will also be in attendance.”

I wonder, is it still satisfying if you had to kick up a fuss in order to receive a statue in your honour? not saying he doesn’t deserve it, just saying.

The Shock Exchange’s favorite player … The Shock Exchange used to practice his “Sky Hook” in Grandma’s backyard. It morphed into a “runner” or a “floater” and allowed me to get my shot off over bigger people. Kareem put teams on his back … he wasn’t a glorified role player who benefited from playing on teams with “exceptionally more talent” than the rest of the league. That said, he has earned the right to say or do whatever he pleases.

The question is, how did Gretzky, Magic, Chick Hearn, and Oscar De La Hoya get statues before Kareem who is older and retired while they all were still playing. He also is the all time leading scorer for the NBA and changed the landscape of college basketball and Los Angeles when he decided to attend UCLA and win multiple National Championships. And they’re just now giving him a trophy! Wow.

is it because he was traded from the Bucks and did not begin his career in L.A like West and Magic. Gretzky is a weird one though. i cant see how he is more significant than Kareem in L.A, unless its in reference to rollerbladers.
