Mike D’Antoni Calls the Los Angeles Lakers’ Offense ‘Anemic’

Frustration continues to build for new Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni, who has yet to inspire his team to find a groove on the offensive end. D’Antoni says they’re not picking up his fast-paced attack. From the OC Register: “He was clear and concise when asked if he was seeing signs that the Lakers are starting to catch onto his fast-paced style. ‘No,’ he said bluntly. ‘Next (question).’ The obvious question is how long will the Lakers stumble around in D’Antoni’s system before the season becomes a bust. The Lakers (7-8) get another chance Friday to prove to their coach that they are learning the ropes in a home game against Denver. ‘Within the numbers, there is some good stuff, defensively mostly,’ D’Antoni said. ‘Stuff that in the long run will make us a contender. In the short run, our offense is anemic right now. We don’t move the ball, we don’t do a lot of things we should be doing and we have to figure that out. We have to get better than 77 points.’ The Lakers struggled to reach that mark in Tuesday’s 79-77 loss to Indiana. D’Antoni said missing 20 free throws didn’t help. He said the team has their share of problems.”

    why am i not suprised…

Dwight’s never been good at free throws lol

  • roscoe

    trade winds are blowing

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange thinks D’Antoni has politics in his future: (i) he made a “muppets” reference to the Lakers after the first game, (ii) he said the Mike Brown firing was unfair and (iii) he’s calling the offense anemic. This guy is hedging his bets to deflect criticism.

So you have Kobe Bryant, a top 5 scorer in the league, Dwight Howard, the most dominant post player in the game, and Pau Gasol, one of the most skilled big men in the game, and you have an ANEMIC offense? Whiner.

how is that whining? — are you confusing the definition of anemic with something else?

  • Caboose

“Are the players catching on to your offense?” “No.” He makes it sound like it’s the players who haven’t figured out his offense.

uhm, it is the players who haven’t figured it out….who else would it be? —- the question is, why does anyone expect them to get his offense after a week and a half.

I don’t know whether to blame Jim Buss or Mike D’Antoni! I Trust Jerry Buss, but Jim is off his rocker! It’s not as much the players talent an issue as it is the wrong coach for this team! The players wound have picked it up for Phil! Jim Buss has ruined that relationship by rudely disrespecting Phil from a business aspect and common courtesy, which both are lacking in Jim! Grrrr!

  • Caboose

Maybe I just read it wrong, he sounded like he was blaming the players and trying to deflect from himself.

naw, i think he was just flatly saying, “they don’t get it yet, it’s gonna take time. but i do see some things defensively that we can bank on in the future” and it just got turned into a media story for media stories sake

Cosign. nobody, and i mean NOBODY should be calling for any heads to roll until at least a month or two this of this offense running with STEVE NASH running the sets and expected to be the playmaker and have everyone in their sets, not KOBE. (as he’s expected to be that person atm, and its not exactly working great)

So how long until people see that Pau really isnt THE most skilled big man in the game, and that he’s lost a step or two? like come on…

  • Drig’r

Our O hasn’t been THAT bad TBH………It’s just the FTs that’s hindering our point totals.

We’re still top 7 in offensive efficiency so far minus our star PG. Not bad.

  • Caboose

Since when is athleticism tied to skill?

  • jseeley

there not a fast team let the vetrans play the way they know how once nash gets back thet will be fine

  • CherokeeGuy35

Okay, Kobe. Your turn now to turn around with your bloviating mouth and diss Coash D’Antoni. I know you are itching to blame the coach and try to take credit for at least how well the Lakers have done. Your smirky face has shsow you false sense of suerpiority ever since you came to the team. And you had super stars like Shaquille Oneal and a few other topnotch players you were jealous of and caused such a row that they left, or were dismissed, largely because ot the fact that you have somehow managed owner and managers that you are indespensible to the team! I wish you would go ahead and take your retirement and depart for places inaccessible adn from which you could exit! I’m just waiting for your “death look” for D’Antoni……

Of course the Lakers offense has been Anemic, with Nash and Blake hurt, they have been getting absolutely pathetic point guard play from Morris and Duhon. Just look at the game stats. The point guards are getting almost no assists and very few points.

I can’t understand the rumors about the Lakers picking up another shooting guard when their greatest weakness is depth at the point.

  • bill

A team that can’t make 3′s, and is too old to run for very long trying to install a 3 point shooting, fast break based offense. Of course, they can’t figure it out.

    Where’s the mystery?

Dantoni is the wrong man for the job, Phil Jackson would have been a better choice. Defense is an afterthought to Dantoni

  • shockexchange

The entire scenario is perfect for the Lakers. When they underachieve again this year the first thing out of their mouths will be, “Well, if we had Phil …”

  • incendy

Team was playing great under Bickerstaff, averaging around 110 points too. Seems there was only one change.

  • Dave C

Ok so we are talking about giving D’Antoni time and Nash coming back, but last time I checked the reason we hired him over Phil was because we didn’t have time to wait for mike browns , and I thought D’Antoni was the best coach for this roster….so y is pau a non factor….he worked good with Phil

He hasnt been doing much skill wise either? I didnt say anything about Athleticism, what i meant by lost a step or two is just that he isnt as good as he used to be. Period. And its clear.

  • Ugh

Sounds like they need an injection of Vitamin Zen to me.

  • Ugh

And who has a better skillset around the basket in the game today?

  • Caboose

    A. Losing a step implies that he is slower. This is directly related to athleticism.
    B. If he is slower, that does not deteriorate his skill set. Generally speaking, older players don’t lose their skill, they lose their athleticism.
    C. Pau is just as SKILLED as he always has been. And yes, he has lost a step, in that his body isn’t as quick and reactive as it used to be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

    A. Well he is a bit slower, so i didnt lie. I meant it both ways really.

    B. I really dont understand your argument… Is he as good as he was 3 years ago or not? LEts not blame the system, he wasnt nearly as good in the last 2 years PHil was here either…

    C. The stats dont lie my friend. Nor does 3 years of steadily declining

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

not to say that you DID blame the system from any of ur previous comments, but thats usually the argument people make, so i wanted to stop you before it even came up.

At least Mike Brown took Cleveland to the Finals and Mike had a better winning percentage. What has D’Antoni done? Anything short of making the Finals, the season will be a bust. So quit blaming the team for your short comings. When Nash comes back it should tell us Laker fans if D’Antoni is the real deal. I sure hope so because I want Kobe to win at least one more ring before he retires…And one more thing use Gasol as a sixth man.

  • Madman

    Just coach, Coach.
