OKC Thunder Not Worried About Team Chemistry Without James Harden

Perhaps the OKC Thunder are still stunned by the James Harden trade to Houston, as they’ve gotten off to a slow start this season. But, to a man, the Thunder think they will be fine going forward. Despite the major shakeup, team chemistry isn’t and won’t be an issue in OKC, according to the Thunder. Per CBS Sports: “The Thunder made the decision not just to look toward the long-term plan when they traded Harden, but also to place that future in the hands of Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. General manager Sam Presti not only believes in his vision, but in his two young superstars as well. The core of the Thunder might be shaken, it might be rattled, but the mission remains unchanged. And the battery that powers this powerful Thunder team still runs strong. There was a certain tightness, an incredible closeness between the Thunder’s young core and losing a key piece like Harden should obviously disturb some of that togetherness and chemistry. The hole left by Harden’s departure might be unfilled — Kevin Martin’s locker is well away from Harden’s old digs — but Scott Brooks has no choice but to move his team forward and focus on the goal. ‘James [Harden] was a good player,” Brooks said. ‘Don’t get me wrong. But he wasn’t Dr. James. He wasn’t helping the group stick together. All the guys do. Russell, Kevin, down the line, Perk, Nick. All the guys. That’s what makes good teams … I’ve never once went into a practice or a game thinking ‘Oh my gosh, I’m really worried about our chemistry tonight,’ Brooks said. ‘[Chemistry] was never a question. It really wasn’t. I think when you talk about chemistry with our group and if you question it, I don’t think you’ve been around our group as long as I have.’ Martin summarized his view of fitting in with the Thunder simply after his first practice: ‘Talent isn’t the problem, it’s just going to be chemistry.’ […] ‘You can’t duplicate it,’ Westbrook said of chemistry, ‘but we have a group of guys that have been here for a while. We’re switching the team up a little bit but every year we’ve had a different team and we’ve found a way to incorporate guys and make sure everybody knows what it takes for us to win. So I don’t think that’s going to be a problem.’”

Easily to Rubio straight forward. I believe Rubio has a rookie contract still. You save cap and get a better pg with upside.

But why the hell would the Timberwolves agree to that deal? That’d be asinine for them to do that when they already have a point guard that can set up their scorers.

  • pposse

under the new CBA westbrook could have demanded %30 of any teams payroll. Right now he makes %25 of the thunder payroll after signing the contract extension last season. If anything, the thunder would have had to trade for Rubio before Westbrook signed the extension and at that point (last year) you don’t know what you are getting in Ricky Rubio. Besides the T-Wolves are probably curious about Rubio as well and how much he can bring to a team and a much much lower cost.

The only players that Westbrook could be traded for have the last names
Rose, Paul, Williams and Rondo. If he would be more controlled at times
and not ignore that guy wearing the number 35 jersey on his team, there
would be nothing for people to criticize.

    This.

“he’ll give you a hit, but not a grammy” so basically he’s rihanna not alicia keys. Great point. They have to amnesty Perkins. he brings absolutely nothing to the table expect defense on Dwight who btw isn’t a elite post scorer anyway. They should of amnestied perkins and signed harden to his max. You have Ibaka and Nick, that’s enough bigs. Plus Martin and Bird Man are always available

Redd I just saw on a post above that you are a Bulls fan… Which means that you are probably a big DRose fan. I am sorry to tell you that Westbrook and Rose are basically the same player, trade the two for each other and watch Rose do the same things you have been bashing on Westbrook for. Look at the stats and style of play; they are the same player, in fact Westbrook had equal stats to Rose in his MVP season two years ago. And that was as the second option on his team. The only difference is everyone loves DROSE and hates Westbrook, oh and that Westbrook hasn’t missed a game since middle school and Rose has already proved to be injury prone.

Trust me the Thunder will not win the playoffs this year..Harden is all around better player then Martin just check the stats..When OKC traded Harden they messed up big time..Wasnt their goal was to win the championship this year or next? Martin is only a scorer he basically a one dimensional player. You need more then that to win the playoffs. Harden helped them defeat the spurs and lakers..Martin will not be with the Thunder next year they will drop him..

Ibaka is a 6’10″ 22 year old who just lead the league in blocks and can hit an 18 footer. He is more rare. That WOULD be why if it weren’t….this
    .
They could get Ibaka for less than Market Value.
    .
They could not get Harden for less than Market Value.
    .
    It’s that simple.

This chemistry is most not Harden departure. Factors many are causing OKC pain right now. Bench issues I think. Westbrook must not continue drugs and Durant need to understand beauty in small things.

no. a healthy dwight can absolutely ruin you if you can’t slow him down somehow. Perkins is useless otherwise but he should’ve stayed.

  • Datkid

    modern day power ranger? weaaaaaakkk

  • Datkid

you do realize Durant won a scoring title with mostly Westbrook passing to him right? Is westbrook’s decision making the best? absolutely not. Is it as awful as you say? no. you’re falling into the easy trap of blaming westbrook instead of the coach and overall team for their struggles so far.

Just because you aren’t the best, or even the second-best, player on your team doesn’t mean you aren’t critical for your team’s success. You’d think Bosh’s injury last year would have taught some people that. A player’s influence on winning = ability+role+matchups. As NBK wrote below, Harden made the Thunder special, and no, Martin is far from an adequate replacement. Look, I think Westbrook is a top-10 player and I still think the Thunder are, at worst, a top-3 team in the west. But ByAnyMeansNecessary is right about Harden’s influence on the playoffs last year.

Let me get this straight. You want to trade a 23-year-old 2-time all-star who averages 24/5/5, has some of the best advanced stats in the league and was the second-best player on a Finals team for a 22-year-old coming off an ACL tear who barely averaged double figures on 35% shooting for a losing team? GTFO
