Ray Allen Called His Game-Winning Three a ‘Layup’

For the second time this season, LeBron James found a wide open Ray Allen for a back-breaking three-pointer. The latest heroic long-distance shot, according Allen, was basically a layup. Per the Miami Herald: “Before his game-winning shot, he had already scored 12 points on four shots, including a pair of three-pointers, in the game’s final period. Still, with less than 20 seconds on the clock and the Heat trailing 108-106, the Cavaliers somehow allowed Allen to find space against their defense. How? You could call it a rookie mistake by Dion Waiters, the Cleveland guard who took his eye off Allen for a split second; but there is more to it than that. The Nuggets made a similar mistake on Nov. 3 when James collapsed Denver’s defense like a house of cards and Allen made his four-point play. [...] When Waiters turned away from Allen, the veteran guard slid to his left. James feigned a post move, drawing Waiters in closer, then shot a pass to Allen on the wing. As Allen likes to say, it was curtains from there. ‘Just that slight movement when he went to help,’ Allen said. ‘I just kind of slid up and when he turned, it was almost like, it was basically a layup, because I was standing right there and he didn’t have to think much.’ Allen finished with 15 points in the quarter. For the season, Allen is shooting 52.9 percent from three-point range (27 of 51).”

its too easy for him at this point

  • K_HOLIDAY

This video game fantasy draft lineup Miami can use at the end of games is causing fits 12 games into the season. SMH.

  • Ill take a difficult Lebron drive to the basket over a 3pointer by Allen.. And still these players help off of him. Are you kidding me? And Allen is still the best 3pointer shooter in the NBA not Korver or anyone else

  • spit hot fiyah

waiters with the defensive mistake. one wonders if that is related to playing all that zone at syracuse

  • Redd

Another shady headline Wtf. He said it was easy to make cause he got open. Not that it was easy like lay up as the headline implies.

  • roscoe

    novak?

  • isiahone1

Novak has something to say about that…

  • RKJ92

Novak doesn’t have ISHH to say shut the hell up and show some respect.. Ray Allen is still by FAR the best 3 point shooter, and anybody who would want Novak over Allen in the dieing seconds of a game are actually sooooo stupid :S

  • isiahone1

Why, because he’s hit more 3s? No denying Novak is on that level shooting wise not clutch wise. Asshole

  • RKJ92

Bro Novak can shoot 3′s undeniably but he is in no way shape or form the shooter Ray Allen is, im sorry. If you want go compare whos better between Kyle Korver, and Novak, Hell even JR Smith right now shooting over 60% but leave Jesus Shuttlesworth out of A comparison to Novak for the love of god..

  • isiahone1

Nah Novak is as good a shooter, ask Jeff van gundy lol he thinks he’s better

  • RKJ92

    your response says 1000 words…

so he got alil cocky like his counterparts now huh

  • M Cho

Novak is nice…but he cant get his shot off like Ray can. Novak is money when he’s wide open, but when defenders key on him…I’ll take Shuttlesworth 24/7.

  • Junior Taylor

The past few seasons has to be heaven for a shooter like Ray. Went from playing with one of the best passers of this generation in Rondo to playing next to the 2nd greatest playmaking forward of all-time in LeBron. Life has been good.

Novak really might be a better shooter. Allen just has a better knack for getting his shot.

  • Jerod

I’m pretty sure he was talking about the pass being a layup, not the shot…

  • RKJ92

All im saying is with the game on the line ill bet my condo on Allen, over Novak no hesitatons.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i mean i understand that stance, but that doesn’t make Allen a better shooter. And the difference between them as shooters, is not staggering by any stretch of anyone’s imagination. You just totally overreacted when people brought up Novak.

    .

    - Novak has the 5th highest 3pt% of ALL-TIME.

    - Ray Allen? 33rd

    .

Last season Ray Allen shot a staggering .453% from 3

While Steve Novak shot an insane .472%

    .

.And Steve Novak shot 282 three’s last season.

.And Ray Allen shot 234 three’s last season.

    .
So in actuality, today, it’s MORE LOGICAL to say Steve Novak is the better shooter.

  • RKJ92

I totally get that, it’s just for me, and again totally a personal opinion is Ray Allen can create his own shots and do everything he needs for that 3 pointer, and Novak is deff a spot shooter from my understanding and isn’t agile enough to create for himself, also not a very great shooter with someone playing up on him, if i’m wrong though I apologize.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

like i said, i totally agree that Allen is more trustworthy. simply because he is so much more efficient at finding opportunities to get his shot, while Novak is, as you said, a spot up shooter. But in terms of pure shooting ability, Novak really might be better. Infact, he probably is.

stats last year said Novak was a better shooter from deep…but ((honestly)) who do you want taking your last shot???? Conventional wisdom says RAY RAY…cant teach clutch.

  • isiahone1

So does your mom while I’m

  • isiahone1

    Thank you

  • isiahone1

Apology accepted…we all say stupid things

  • RKJ92

yo you serious? are you 5?

I think Ray Allen is a very valuble player I’m just glad he’s with the Heat because in the cores of the season he’ll be there to make some big shots!!!!

  • T-Money

that’s not even true. ray allen percentages on open 3s is absolutely unreal (close to 60% from the left corner), he just also takes shots off the dribble or on the move that novak can’t get off.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    gtfoh with that.
    .
so you are really going to give me a stat about open threes so far through 10 games and act like that proves your point? how big is your field of data? 15 shots max? And what is Novak shooting that is wide open? Has he even been wide open this season? It’s like people don’t even watch Novak. Or maybe it’s because Ray Allen wears a Heat Jersey now, so you are compelled to try and make up an argument, idk.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shooting.guard.319 Shooting Guard

good thought, but very hard to execute when you have 2 seconds or less

  • T-Money

yeah… except those are last year’s percentage. thank you for playing tho. what novak is shooting wide open is what it says in the boxscore, that’s the difference between guys like novak and james jones and guys like allen.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Nice to know you only watch the Heat.
