Andrew Bynum Thinks Kobe Bryant Could Stunt Dwight Howard’s Growth

If anyone should know how tough it is to play alongside Kobe Bryant, it would be Andrew Bynum. The injured big man offered his thoughts on what Dwight Howard can expect as Kobe’s teammate, which Bryant didn’t necessarily disagree with. Per the OC Register and LA Daily News: “On Sunday he missed the first chance to play against the Lakers, but he offered some analysis of his former team. ‘They’re just struggling,’ Bynum said. ‘They’ve got injuries, and they aren’t posting the ball. So that’s tough, too.’ Bynum said the only Laker he still talks to now is Pau Gasol, which jibes with Bynum’s take that the Lakers need to use post-up offense more — as Gasol and Dwight Howard have indicated. Bynum also questioned the Lakers’ ‘commitment to defense’ and their bench depth. ‘Obviously the talent is there to win a championship — from the starters’ point of view anyway,’ Bynum said. Bynum also said: ‘Dwight’s a great player, but he’s going to have to get accustomed to playing with Kobe (Bryant) and not touching the ball every single play.’ Bynum noted that it does provide more opportunities for him now being away from Bryant, even though ‘it helped me tremendously’ early in his career that Bryant’s presence prevented opponents from double-teaming Bynum. ‘Later, I thought I was able to get the ball more and do more things with the ball,’ he said, ‘so I could definitely see how at the end it could stunt growth.’ [...] Bryant agreed. ‘When you’re playing with me, you obviously have to sacrifice something,’ he said. ‘Same thing with me and Shaq. We offset each other.’”

Dwight Howard is 27 years old. I’m not sure he’s going to improve much from here on in. He won’t get noticeably stronger or faster. He’s in his prime NOW and has about 3-4 years of peak dominance ahead of him (if you go by the statistical output of most top tier C’s throughout the League’s history). I think the biggest improvement Howard is going to make (if he makes it) will be mentally. Passing out of double-teams, hitting important FT’s things like that. He’s still semi-robotic on the block, and he’ll never have the offensive fluidity of a Kareem or Hakeem or even Amar’e (if you want to use a modern-day physical beast who developed a solid/good face-up game/jump shot.)

The funny thing is Kobe actually agreed with him on this. I just find it interesting that a guy who’s played one fully healthy season is already declaring himself the #1 center despite having not played a single game this year. Bynum is a great player, but there is no way he is better than Howard on a consistent basis, even when healthy.

DWIGHT IS STUNTING HIS OWN GROWTH
    -
NO ONE WANTS TO GIVE HIM THE BALL, BECAUSE THEIR AFRAID THE OTHER TEAM WILL JUST “HACK-A-DWIGHT”…
    -
AS A LAKER FAN….ITS THE MOST FRUSTRATING THING WATCHING HIM LOSE US GAMES BECAUSE HE CANT HIT A GODDAMN FREE THROW.

maybe bynum should worry about getting on the court and not worry about howard’s issues. and bynum saying kb stunted his growth…-please! he would not even take the captain’s tutoring…glad he is gone! thanks for playing..take your perm and go home!

Kobe stunts growth? Is that why Bynum is 6 ft 1? Oh, wait

  • zogs19994

    ARE…ARE YOU RETARDED?

  • RowdyTexan

Dwight is already very tall, I don’t think he needs to grow anymore

  • Toner83

Bynum’s right: When he left LA, his growth was no longer stunted. However, that was to do with his hair…

Howard should score more when Nash comes back, since D’Antoni will run the offense through him. Obviously Nash will share the ball more than Kobe. But DH’s points will still mostly come on fast breaks and put-backs. I’d certainly rather have Gasol posting up than Howard. The hearth of the matter is that Howard is just as selfish as Kobe. On this team Howard should be looking less for touches and focusing on defense and crashing the boards. He could easily average 15 and 15 with 4 bpg, a rich man’s Tyson Chandler.

Why do you have AI as your profile pic if you are a Lakers fan? As a true AI fan, I could never root for the Lakers or Kobe Bryant…. Please Explain.

  • The Seed

What was Bynum numbers on the two Championship teams. Yall be surprise to see his garbage numbers in the playoffs those years. He’s acting like Smush now. Child Please!!

  • Allenp

You want Dwight to be a reach man’s Tyson Chandler so Kobe can keep doing what Kobe does. lol.

Ya’ll may want to pump the breaks on the “Rich Man’s Tyson Chandler” talk until after D12 signs. Once he’s locked up, then break the bad news.

Dwight’s growth? the man can’t hit a free-throw if his life depends on it so he would have to be super dominant (as in shaq dominant), if he gets alot of touches all openents have to do is just hack and the game is gone, only growth he needs is in his character maybe

  • AQWORD

Look at him. Just look at him! Lobe used to be 7.4′ before he got capped!!

  • zogs19994
