Deron Williams Blames Avery Johnson’s System for Struggles

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

A deeply frustrated Deron Williams is searching everywhere for answers.

The Brooklyn Nets’ star point guard, putting up the worst numbers since his second year in the NBA, has gone from saying his issues are mostly mental, to blaming his head coach for his struggles.

According to D-Will, currently averaging 17 points, 8.3 assists and only shooting 38.8% from the field, Avery Johnson’s offense hasn’t helped his game. Williams says he prefers the system Jerry Sloan ran in Utah.

Per the NY Times:

Since coming to the Northeast, he has eroded in nearly every facet of his game. His scoring has declined, and his shooting percentages have plummeted. [...] Injuries may be partly to blame. But as the Nets prepared to host the Jazz on Tuesday, Williams listed another factor: the playbook. “That system was a great system for my style of play,” Williams said of the “flex” offense run by Utah Coach Jerry Sloan. “I’m a system player. I love Coach Sloan’s system. I loved the offense there.”

Williams was widely blamed for Sloan’s sudden retirement in February 2011, just before the Jazz traded Williams to the Nets. And his openly pining for Sloan’s system could be viewed as subtle criticism of Coach Avery Johnson’s offense. Williams did nothing to discourage that interpretation when he was asked to compare the offense used by the Nets with the one he ran in Utah. “Is it as good as there? No,” he said. “There’s just more one-on-one and isos” in Johnson’s offense.

Shots fired!

While saying that he will eventually adjust to the Nets’ iso-heavy system, Deron Williams added that in both high school and college, his teams ran motion offenses that featured plenty of movement which allowed him to thrive.

Avery Johnson thinks time is on Deron Williams’ side and that he will snap out of his funk. And though that may very well be the case, there’s no denying that things will be considerably more tense in Brooklyn going forward.

This is a good look, I never felt DWill was a superstar once, no matter what anybody had said to me in the past!! and I said even when he gets a good team he wont play well.. this is just case in point, and for all the people who disagreed with me all I have to say is lol! i’m right and your wrong :) not a superstar!! he couldn’t carry a beanie baby

  • Anthony Dixon

lol, the season isn’t over yet. The Miami Heat took a while to gel so it will take him a while also.

  • Batman

i thought dwill will be the 1 pg on the league for 5-6 years. he was so dominant when he was on the utah jazz. well, thats life.

  • Anthony Dixon

The dwill hater will come out now but the season has just started and they have a winning record. He should have just kept quiet but w.e

  • theDankerNuggets

I don’t know if this is what Avery Johnson has always used for his offense but it doesn’t seem very smart to me. We have all seen how far Iso-Joe can take a team, i think if this team wants to ultimately win a championship your going to have to try to utilize all your players in some kind of system, not give the ball to one player over and over at the top of the key and clear out for him.

  • Datkid

but one of the reasons he supposedly wanted to leave utah was bc of the off-nvm smh

  • http://twitter.com/mcruz7 Miguel Cruz

    Dwill = Pig!!

  • shockexchange

“The coach can’t coach.” How original. It just goes to show you how the power has shifted from the teams/coaches to the players. DWill just lost all kinds of respect from the Shock Exchange.

  • roscoe

    dwill should have said,

“we have to work harder, trust each other more, and play better as a team.”

  • TV63

Quit your whining Williams! You wanna trade coaches? Have Bryon Scott as your coach; then you have something to cry about. We in Cleveland would love to have your coach anyday, anytime.

  • The Fury

Clearly, Deron is not a superstar point guard most of us thought here. Because superstars can ADAPT to changes. Adjust your game and you will succeed. Damn, such a primadonna. If you’re good you’re good.

  • north

First he whines himself out of Utah and Sloan out of a job… not he’s trying to do the same in Brooklyn and to Johnson. The guy is an overrated cry baby. I pity the fans that have to deal with him being their “franchise player”.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

Lol Com’on now. He’s aint THE STAR. But he’s up there. He aint that basic

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

He did Sloan dirty too. That’s why Karl Malone don’t mess with him

  • north

That’s actually not Avery’s offense but it’s clear that Williams doesn’t even know. If you watch the games it’s not ISO, it’s an inside out game with the guards swinging it on the perimeter and looking for holes. Marshon Brooks figured it out last season which is why his numbers were so good. Joe and Deron just don’t get it.

  • pposse

haha D Will showing his true colors

  • RKJ92

I never said dude was BASIC 8.3 assists is great! but Damian Lillard a ROOKIE is putting up better numbers then Deron Williams a so called superstar.. like how does that look? you take away a good coach like Sloan and Deron Williams is nothing just ask CARLOS BOOZER about that :D

  • RKJ92

Saying that about the Lakers too? lol…

  • RKJ92

    THANK YOU!!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    he didn’t say that tho

  • RKJ92

Looooooooolllllll!! ya okayyy there…. you actually for one moment thought he would dethrone Chris Paul!? what were you on!?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you do realize Deron Williams has led a team to the conference finals before right? the guy is a top 5 PG when everything in his head is right. but obviously, right now, it isn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Deron Williams said absolutely nothing negative about Avery Johnson in this entire thing. Actually read it before you go over reacting.

  • MikeC.

They’re struggling with the inside-out game now. No Lopez = no inside game. DWill should blame the medical staff.

  • RKJ92

No.. I’m right on point.. Damian Lillard a rookie is outplaying Deron Williams case shut and closed.. thx.

  • RKJ92

Ya ONCE nbk Con-f*cking-gratz so has Zach Randolph LOL let’s not go there.. :)

  • pposse

so when he is asked if Avery’s system is as good as Sloan’s in Utah and he says “No” thats not saying anything negative about Avery? #dillusional

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

Damian Lillard is the truth! I been saying that for a while now lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    No he hasn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no it isn’t. it’s saying Sloan’s system is better. If i tell you i know more about basketball then you, am i insulting you? or am i saying something that is probably true?
    .
    same thing.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

and it’s DELUSIONAL. if you are going to try and insult someone and use an absolutely pointless #. Spell the word right. you look #stupid.

  • RKJ92

OOPS I THOUGHT IT SAID CONF SEMI LOL LET ME JUST GRAB MY GUN NOW :D

  • RKJ92

YA HE’S NICEEEE ONCE HE LEARNS HOW TO SHOOT MORE EFFICIENTLY RAISE HIS ASSISTS A BIT MORE HE WILL BE LEGIT

  • RKJ92

    PEW PEW… :’D

  • Datkid

agreed. Atlanta had plenty of talent(although it was kind of mismatched) and Iso-joe stunted their potential and growth as a team.

  • Datkid

    true

  • Datkid

lmao what’s your point? they’ll gel eventually too.

  • Datkid

Zach randolph’s arguably a top 5 PF when healthy… what’s wrong with that lmao

  • Datkid

lmaoooo what on earth why do you hate D.will dog?

  • niQ

fwiw, he sure has played the blame game a lot. He definitely misses Sloan’s flex offense though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

Well if u loved his system so much, maybe you shouldnt have ran one of the greatest coaches in history outta town, jackass.

  • shockexchange

That’s what the Shock Exchange heard.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

If u dont think the Lakers will gel, and think that what u see right now is what u get…ur crazy.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

so the Shock Exchange has a hearing problem?

  • shockexchange

Yeah, he gave Sloan that “back talk” also. The Shock Exchange thinks (i) DWill wanted out of Utah, and (ii) acted exasperated with Sloan’s system to make it politically correct for him to leave. That way, he avoided the public backlash that LeBron and D12 got for leaving for greener pastures. The Shock Exchange sees you DWill.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

    And i see you, shockexchange

  • pposse

why would you say that about a system your head coach runs? what good comes out of saying that Jerry Sloan system is better than Avery’s? It might be true, but its a disloyal thing to say, hence a negative thing to say, hence you are #DELUSIONAL if you can’t comprehend the that there was a negative connotation in regards to his remarks to the public about his coach and team system.

  • shockexchange

No, the Shock Exchange can read between the lines. For instance, what nbk said: “so the Shock Exchange has a hearing problem?” What the Shock Exchange heard: “so nbk tryna catch that fiddy?”

  • Anthony Dixon

so are you implying that damian is better?

  • RKJ92

    THIS SEASON SO FAR YES.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i mean if these were 16 year old girls who were sensitive about stuff like that sure. but these are grown ass men. as a professional, when someone says something that is completely true in regards to my work place, and it doesn’t make light of my abilities at my job, i take that as constructive. The only thing Avery should do from these comments is try and come up with a way to appease his star player. He shouldn’t get rattled, or feel insulted. There is no reason to be, unless he’s insecure, but if he is, should he really be coaching an NBA team? He doesn’t work at a daycare.

  • RKJ92

I JUST THINK HE GETS WAYYYYYYY TOO MUCH CREDIT THEN HE DESERVES.. A GREAT PLAYER YES.. A SUPERSTAR HELL NO…

  • Anthony Dixon

how would you know that??? ya fish together?

  • RKJ92

HE CANT PLAY DEFENSE TO SAVE HIS LIFE?

  • RKJ92

    YEPPPPP

  • Anthony Dixon

season aint over yet so that statement holds little weight. lillard is nice but hast to win some meaningful games first.

  • RKJ92

ILL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT, I THINK FACTS ARE MORE EVIDENT AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME THOUGH AND THEY AREN’T EVEN IN THE PLAYOFF RUN ATM :/

  • RKJ92

NO HE DOESN’T.. AS OF RIGHT NOW, AND AGAIN FOR THIS SEASON OBVIOUSLY.. HE IS INFACT OUTPLAYING DERON WILLIAMS. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WINNING MEANINGFUL GAMES LOL THESE ARE STATISTICS

  • Anthony Dixon

you obviously do not watch Nets games. Cuz if you did, you would see that stackhouse gets more minutes than brooks.

  • pposse

They aren’t 16 year old girls, but there are always a time and place to vent out your frustrations. Who is being a 16 yr old girl is DWill for venting to the public when he should have the mental acuity to understand that the NY media will get a hold of this and try and create controversy. Of course that’s my opinion, its why I find the need to comment on every Kobe post when he publicly calls out teammates and such. He should just say what he has to say to Avery behind closed doors (again that’s just my opinion).

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

so yes, the shock exchange has a hearing problem. or literacy problem. because, obviously it isn’t hearing.

  • shockexchange

Cosign. “Yo Ma, I like my other girl’s cookin’ better than yours.” Yeah, that always falls your way.

  • Anthony Dixon

is he venting or just answering questions?

  • shockexchange

Avery Johnson is a much better man than the Shock Exchange. If DWill made some backhanded comment about the Shock Exchange’s system on Sunday night, he’d be fryin’ fish by Monday morning.

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

    What?

  • pposse

he might just be answering questions, but when he says one system is better than the one he is running now, then shouldn’t he just not answer the question? you guys don’t think that what he is saying will cause atleast a little bit of controversy?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

I don’t understand why he said Sloan’s system was great when he was the one that was clashing with Sloan over his system (eventually leading to the trade).

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    I LOLed

  • http://www.facebook.com/Starkindustries24 Josh Sykes

Stop typing in fucking caps. Damn bet your yelling at your screen right now.

  • Anthony Dixon

nah i agree wit you.. i think he should have kept quite but it’s hard when your being asked questions.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.kelleher.1610 Andrew Kelleher

Well said! Superstars take over games within any system. Great players adapt given any situation and believe they will succeed.

  • Anthony Dixon

he is only shooting better. That means he’s out performing him?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i am not arguing with that. Deron is being a petulant star, but he isn’t insulting anyone. that’s all i was saying. he’s saying something honest, not insulting. is he right for saying it? nah. But he also isn’t/shouldn’t be hurting anyone’s feelings.

  • Datkid

Jerry Sloan ran an excellent system that helped drag some awful teams to the playoffs consistently. Of course Jerry Sloan’s system> Avery Johnson’s

  • Datkid

he wanted out of Utah for 2 reasons. 1. they traded away basically everybody good, and then they were predictable, everybody knew all their plays because the playbook was literally DECADES old.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that’s also not true. if the Shock Exchange were the coach of the Nets, he, just like Avery Johnson, would be less important than Deron Williams.

  • Datkid

there are def. superstars worse than D.will bro. lmao until very recently both melo and JJ were some of them. and personally I think D.will is still better than melo even tho melo’s improved a lot this year

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Damian Lillard is not outplaying Williams. Stop saying something that is completely false. He’s scoring better. Everywhere else, he’s a worse player.

    .

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&p1=willide01&y1=2013&p2=lillada01&y2=2013 <—- Proof
    .
you can say Williams is performing at the same level as a rookie. That would make sense. He isn't being outperformed tho, that's false.

  • Anthony Dixon

i aint mad… we root for honesty

  • Anthony Dixon

you obviously have something personal against him… tell the slam world what happened?

  • theDankerNuggets

Your probably right about his offense, i don’t mean to say it’s all Iso. But from what I have watched Joe Johnson definitely has a green light to try to take his man off the dribble a lot. And he is probably one of the best one-on-one scorers in the league, but is far from being a good passer, and so I think him having the ball in his hands so much makes an offense so stagnant. I think this team would be much more effective if they made him be more of a slasher until late in the shot clock.

  • RKJ92

WHAT ABOUT THERE EFFICIENCY RATINGS AS WELL LILLARD IS SLIGHTLY AHEAD

  • theDankerNuggets

exactly just look at how well they are playing now without him, their big men are thriving in a much more fluid offense

  • Datkid

yes he can. he defended fine when the grizzlies were murdering everything… don’t make it sound like he’s your boy bargnani. You can’t name 6-7 PFs better than a healthy Zach Randolph

  • RKJ92

I CANT LOL ITS A TORONTO THING

  • RKJ92

IT COUNTS FOR A LOT.. I DONT WANT A PG ON MY TEAM THAT CANT SHOOT AT LEASSSSTTTT 44% THAT’S HOW YOU LOSE GAMES THE LITTLE THINGS

  • Caboose

Hey, hey, hey, hey, Raptors guy? Can you just go back to whining about your own team? Or, to put it bluntly, shut up.

  • RKJ92

I EXPLAINED AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE YOU BRAIN DWARF

  • theDankerNuggets

And their coach would always want to try to run their offense through them. From what I’ve seen Joe Johnson seems to get way more looks, which has to mean Avery Johnson has more faith in his abilities

  • LakeShow

    Hasn’t kindergarten started yet?

    Geezuz you woman.

Williams was a superstar in Utah and hasn’t been since he left.

    That’s the facts.

  • Caboose

Lol, I just had an image of Sloan pulling some worn, Indiana Jones type book out of a giant stone box in the locker room, with sand spilling everywhere. And D-Will thinking, oh hell naw.

  • Anthony Dixon

thats not personal…… I think it’s something deeper

  • Kadavour

and I just can’t understand why. Brooks is INSTANT offense, he’ s a hard guard for ANYONE, and it just pains me to see this guy’s potential stifled by extended time on the bench for Jerry Stackhouse. Avery is playing favorites.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

.1? you are really going to try and say Damian Lillard is having a better season because he has a 0.1 lead in PER? really?

    .

like i said, you can say they are performing at the same level if you really want, but nowhere is there a reason to say Lillard is the better player right now. he is the better scorer.

  • RKJ92

I FUCKING HATE BARGNANI HE’S NOT MY BOY AT ALL JUST CUZ I’M FROM TORONTO DOESN’T MEAN I LIKE THAT PRIMO PASTA PIECE OF SHlT AND YOU CANT NAME THEM BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH Z-BO CANT DEFEND HES A MONSTER IN THE PAINT AND REBOUNDING THOUGH HIS FG % IS SHlTTTTTTT

  • RKJ92

HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY CAVIRGIN? SHUT THE F*CK UP! :D

  • RKJ92

THAT’S WHAT I BEEN TRYING TO SAY NOBODY GETS IT THOUGH

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

most people had him as better than Paul from 09-11. (mainly because Paul was hurt and nobody knew if he’d ever get back to where he was on a consistent basis).

  • LakeShow

Naw, that’s not what your said…

“I never felt DWill was a superstar once”

  • robb

No doubt about it. I’ve never seen CP3 complaining about anything. He just goes and performs no matter what. He’s always gonna get his numbers because he’s a true superstar PG. But hey, if Deron was capable of getting a HOF coach like Sloan out of Utah, obviously he’s gonna complain about Avery Johnson’s system.

  • Pais

    Jeremy Lin fans would disagree

  • SirGrey

Brooks’ defense is horrible. That’s why.

  • TR

DWill has been pretty loose butt hole compared to his usual, but I believe he can bounce back. Skills haven’t fallen off at all.

  • Datkid

He’s hearing the words… but his mind can’t make sense of them. sad.

  • Datkid

    lmaooo that’s probably true.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

DWill’s statements further illustrates my point of him being overrated. Don’t give me this “the system is at fault for my struggles” BS. You’re a supposed to be the best PG in quite a few people’s eyes and you’re blaming the playcalling for your problems? CP has a terrible coach in Vinny yet I don’t see him pointing the fingers at anyone during their struggles or shooting under 40% from the field. Go out there and lead by example with your play.

  • Datkid

They are, but you gotta remember. Points wise they are exactly the same. This team is more aesthetically pleasing and might go farther in the playoffs because they fit better together, (which is important actually but I haven’t seen enough of them to know that) but all advanced metrics point to them scoring and defending at the exact same rate they did with him. which is weird. lol

  • Datkid

oh my god shut up, I just meant that you’re obviously a raptors fan so you know about bargnani. don’t have an aneurysm. also Z-bo can defend. He’s been fine defensively for like 2-3 years.

also for the record captain caps lock you can name 5-7 PF’s better than Zbo. Dirk,Pau, Bosh,Aldridge,K-Love (granted they all have to fully healthy) but whatever. ugh

  • Datkid

that was really stupid. you’re really stupid. post less please. thanks.

  • Datkid

So just so we’re clear only the jack@ss who’s in love with the Toronto Raptors thinks D.will is a terrible awful player right? just checking.

  • RunNGun

Coach killer… just ask Sloan. `Nuff said.

    THAT TOO

  • LakeShow

    Yeah like a month.

  • KC

He also needs to drop some pounds. He has never appeared to really be in the tip top shape that a superstar(especially an point guard) should be in. He has had that double chin thing going on for a minute now.

When did Lin blame the coach’s system for his inadequacy?

I always thought Deron was underrated and as good as CP3, but it’s been really hard to root for the guy lately. Throwing his coach under the bus while praising the one he got fired makes me wonder whom I despise more C.Anthony, D.Howard or D.Williams.

Jeremy Lin “Fans”. You missed a word, which is strange seeing as there’s only five of them in the entire sentence.

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

How come I don’t see Jeremy Lin blaming the system or the coach? Deron should learn from there.

  • RedRum

I see people here blaming DWill for not adapting to the system. At the same time, I pretty sure I have seen some of the same people saying that Nash could not fit to the Princeton that LA was running, or that the Triangle would not be suitable for Nash. Double standards anyone??? I am sorry to say but not many people here really know what they talking about as it pertains to basketball (Stephen A Smiths favourite phrase). Look, as a coach (not pro, I coach a Uni team in the UK) I use players that fit in my system (I run the Triangle). I have players that if I run a different system would be starters, but in the triangle cannot do the things the system demands from the PG. DWill is a player that needs the ball in his hand to play with a pick n roll. Johnson’s system sort of uses him in iso and drive and kick situations which does not suit him. Not every player can do anything. I personally do not like AJ as a coach, neither all the rest of the ex-defensive specialist coaches (ie Tibs, Brown etc). Their teams win games in the regular season just because they get stops and focused D . But come playoffs time, when you have to play the same team 6-7 times, everyone knows everything about the other team. What wins the game is the creativity of the coach to overcome scouting and bring something in the game that will give an advantage. I just realised that I wrote the longest post I have ever written, my assumption is that no one is reading at this point, so let me take this opportunity to say bleap you all

  • Anthony Dixon

    lmao

  • Anthony Dixon

jeremy lin had ppl thinking the same

  • Anthony Dixon

you guys cnt read… dwill was being honest, what’s wrong with that… yall are more emotional than Avery about this
