Deron Williams Says Head Coach Avery Johnson Likes to ‘Micro-Manage’

Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams confirms that his coach, Avery Johnson, is a bit of a control-freak. From the NY Daily News: “Fair or not, the rap on Avery Johnson in Dallas is he was a type-A control freak, the kind of coach who demanded without compassion, and who could prompt Dirk Nowitzki to describe the tenure as ‘a little dictatorship.’ [...] ‘I’ve heard that,’ Deron Williams says, cracking a smile. ‘At times, he likes to micro-manage the game.’ Don’t let the revamped Nets roster or re-branding fool you, or even the anomaly that became Tuesday night’s fast-paced, entertaining 117-111 defeat. This is Johnson’s team. This is his system. It’s his vision of a defense that has developed into one of the league’s best, Tuesday’s effort notwithstanding.”

anyone who watched him coach the mavericks knows this. hopefully he let’s deron run the team with some type fo freedom for some strecthes. having a point guards like williams doesn’t happen to many coaches so he better take advantage. it’s not only players that should adjust to coaches, it goes both ways

man, that 3rd quarter was fun to watch. not sure if the thunder just picked up their D, but Deron in particular seemed to run out of gas in the 4th. the nets have a lot of tools, though. they were a couple of bonehead plays (cough, cough, jerry stackhouse) from stealing one from KD and the boys.

Coaches tend to be harder on guys who play the same position they played.

True! DWILL doesn’t like to be told to work hard or play defense. The Jazz would always do better when DWILL took his first breather and the 2nd string guards would come in and raise the intensity. Not sure if he’s still doing this in Jersey, but I think a coach that “micromanages” is code for someone trying to hold DWILL accountable for his lack of work ethic or his desire to play D. (He can play D when he wants to, but chooses not to and appears bored with it, he should play for D’Antoni)

Being a micro-managing type A personality myself, I have learned to moderate and delegate responsibility more and more throughout my career. Hopefully Avery Johnson has a sense of self improvement and is going through the same growth as a leader.
